Steph Curry is no stranger to the MVP award. The Golden State Warriors legend has earned the MVP award on two separate occasions. However, this year Curry has been sidelined with injuries and hasn’t produced an MVP season. As his team prepares for another playoff run, Curry was asked his thoughts on the MVP race. Curry mentioned one name, and that name was Joel Embiid. The pride of Davidson believes it is finally time to crown Embiid the MVP of the NBA.

Embiid has been in the MVP discussions for the past two seasons. Coming up short of back-to-back award winner Nikola Jokic. Jokic is seeking his third MVP accolade this season. However, the race seems as tight as ever between the two NBA bigs. Curry’s reasoning for choosing Embiid is simple. “But Joel took a leap that I think a lot of people didn’t expect because he was dominant already. That leap turned heads and put Philly in a great position. If I had to pick, it would be him,” stated Curry.

Embiid’s Sixers are in a great position with the NBA Playoffs looming. The Sixers are currently in a comfortable spot with the three seed in the East. An MVP showdown between Embiid and Jokic could only happen in the NBA Finals. Which would be a treat for fans around the league. Winning the MVP honors would be a huge milestone for the Philadelphia star. However, Embiid has mentioned recently that winning the award isn’t everything to him. The Sixers star stated that winning the NBA Championship is his ultimate goal.

Every player has their sights set on an NBA championship. However, winning the MVP award would still be a special moment. Embiid’s recent comments on the award might not describe his entire feelings on the accolade. But there has to be a piece of Embiid hungry to prove MVP voters wrong. Joel Embiid Comments On MVP Race

Joel Embiid has had an excellent 2022-23 season. The Sixers star has been in the conversations for the MVP award for the past few seasons. However, Embiid has watched Nuggets star Nikola Jokic bring home the award for two straight years. The Jokic-Embiid debate has been a hot argument this season. Many believe that the league shouldn’t award a player the award for three consecutive seasons. For Embiid, it doesn’t really matter.

When speaking on the award, Embiid had this to say: “I’m just focused on trying to win a championship and whatever happens, happens. If [I] win, great. If I don’t win anything, I don’t care.” Embiid isn’t necessarily worried about individual awards. His performance on the floor speaks for itself. It also helps put his team in a great position to win the NBA Championship. The Sixers will be a strong candidate to be NBA title contenders. With Embiid and James Harden, the Sixers duo could walk through the Eastern Conference.

Embiid’s numbers have been staggering this season. Although, not that far off from his career averages. This season, Embiid is averaging 33 points per game, along with 10 rebounds and four assists. Anyone that averages a double-double is having a great season. However, averaging a double-double while scoring over 30 points a game is MVP-worthy. Individual awards may not be as important to someone like Embiid. But, Embiid still deserves recognition for an incredible season. Embiid has earned the right to be considered league MVP.

Individual awards have taken a back seat in recent years in all sports. Obviously, the ultimate goal is to win a championship. But that shouldn’t diminish the incredible seasons had by these athletes. By saying awards like the MVP are less important, it is a crime to the athletes playing the games. NBA Renames Annual MVP Trophy After Michael Jordan

The NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award is now known as “The Michael Jordan Trophy,” celebrating what is considered the best basketball player of all time.

The NBA made the announcement on Tuesday morning, highlighting the Chicago Bulls legend who won the MVP award five times. Jordan is tied for second all-time with Bill Russell behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

In addition to those MVP Awards, Jordan had six NBA titles, six Finals MVPs, 11 All-NBA selections, 14 All-Star selections, three All-Star MVPs, 10 scoring titles, one Defensive Player of the Year award, and Rookie of the Year honors in 15 seasons.

The new trophy is a figure holding a crystal basketball in the air. The trophy is nearly 23.6 inches tall, a nod to Jordan’s trademark number and six NBA championships. There are 23 points on the crystal ball. The base of the trophy has five sides, highlighting Jordan’s MVP awards.

The trophy was created by Mark Smith, retired VP of Innovation Special Projects at Nike and a Jordan Brand designer, in collaboration with Jordan.

“I’m incredibly honored to have created the NBA’s MVP Trophy in partnership with Michael Jordan. Sculpting Michael’s vision of his own pursuit of athletic achievement into this award has been the opportunity and challenge of a lifetime,” Smith said. “As we worked together on this project, it was very important to Michael that the figure not be a likeness of him, but instead that the recipient should be able to see himself in the award. For Michael, naming the award in his honor was recognition enough.”

The finalists for the NBA Coach of the Year, Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Kia NBA Most Improved Player, Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, and Kia NBA Sixth Man of the Year awards were released today by the NBA. The MVP is a three man race between Giannis Antentokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Denver Nuggets’ reigning MVP Nikola Jokic.

Based on vote results from a global panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, there are three candidates for each yearly award.
