Elcamino Drops Off New Project “Block Work”

When it comes to grimy bars evocative of that classic golden era sound, you can’t go wrong with Elcamino. Today, the Griselda affiliate and all-around solid lyricist has come through with his brand new project Block Work, a ten-track effort that clocks in at a reasonable twenty-one minutes. Don’t let the general brevity fool you. There’s still plenty of bars found throughout the tape, beginning off the top with the filthy introductory cut “Avenue Thug” and continuing until closer “Right.”

Sonically, Block Work is content to remain in its comfort zone, with dusty loops and hard-hitting boom-bap drums generally laying the foundation. In some cases, as on the minimalist “Driveway Music,” the chosen samples evoke shades of the mafioso rap of yore. Others, like the bass-driven “Bucket Hat” find Elcamino catching a groovier pocket, showcasing a subtle but welcome versatility in his flow. Sometimes, as on midway cut “Impossible,” he opts to pull back the drums damn-near altogether, a move often employed by his longtime associate Westside Gunn.

Should these qualities appeal to you, be sure to give Block Work a spin. For everyone wondering where “real hip-hop” went, consider this a stop worth taking on your quest for answers.

YBN Almighty Jay Releases Debut Solo Project “Battling My Spirit”

YBN Almighty Jay has been telling his side of the story this week, opening up after years of slander from hip-hop fans. Between his short-lived relationships with Blac Chyna and DreamDoll and the demise of the YBN collective, the 21-year-old rapper has been through a lot in his young professional career. As Cordae continues to push new heights for himself, YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty Jay have been left wondering how to join him at the top. Perhaps all it will take is a little bit of introspection from Jay, which he starts on his official debut project Battling My Spirit.

The “Chopsticks” rapper is back with his first official solo project, releasing the eight-track mixtape Battling My Spirit on Friday. The project starts off on a high note with “Get Rich In The Hood”, which is one of the best songs, before zoning out into misguided territory with the stripper-loving anthem “Big Check” and “Murder In My Eyes”. If anything, Battling My Spirit proves exactly why YBN Almighty Jay belongs in the rap game. It shows brushes of his potential, but the rapper seems to keep a lot in his bag too.

Listen to the new project below and let us know your thoughts.

Tracklist:

1. Get Rich In The Hood
2. Big Check
3. Murder In My Eyes
4. Battling My Spirit
5. Drank Sealed
6. Shoutout To My Dentist
7. Bring Out The Hoochies
8. Red Light Special

OMB Peezy Recruits King Von, Rylo Rodriguez, Blac Youngsta & More For ‘Too Deep For Tears’ Album

After releasing the high-energy “Dope Boy” single with his fellow Mobile, Alabama, rapper Rylo Rodriguez at the beginning of February, anticipation for OMB Peezy’s next album skyrocketed. Unfortunately, there was a slight kink in the Loyalty Over Love rapper’s album rollout as earlier this month, he was reportedly arrested in connection to the shooting at Roddy Ricch and 42 Dugg’s music video shoot. Since being released from jail, OMB Peezy has denied the accusations against him, and now he’s shifting focus to his long-awaited album, Too Deep For Tears.

Despite the negativity that Peezy has endured this month, Too Deep For Tears is an impressive new record that’s deeply rooted in speaking positive manifestations and figuring out a way to move past a life full of pain. In addition to the previously released Rylo Rodriguez-assisted song “Dope Boy,” OMB Peezy’s latest album features huge guest appearances from underground and mainstream acts such as Blac Youngsta, Jacquees, Sniper Gang artist Jackboy, and the late King Von.

With a runtime of just 45 minutes, finding some time to listen to OMB Peezy’s album Too Deep For Tears this weekend shouldn’t be too difficult, so don’t sleep on the Mobile, Alabama artist’s impressive new full-length effort.

YG & The 4Hunnid Squad Teams Up For “Gang Affiliated” Compilation Album

Following months of loose singles from YG, Day Sulan, and D3Szn, the entire gang at YG’s record label 4Hunnid Records has teamed up to release a proper compilation album. Released on 4Hunnid records in partnership with epic records, the 4Hunnid compilation tape features the group of artists handpicked and developed by Compton native YG, including Day Sulan, D3Szn, Mitch, and Tay2x. Titled Gang Affiliated, 4Hunnid’s new joint album marks the label’s first project featuring all of four of YG’s artist.

At sevent tracks long, Gang Affiliated is mostly an in-house affair, but on tracks such as “Yellow Tape” and “Roxanne,” 4Hunnid recruits DDG and Band Gang Lonnie Bands for respective guest features. Although YG appears on five of the project’s seven tracks, he mostly takes the backseat to his artists, giving them the space and platform to showcase their talents. Previously heard bangers “Hit Em Up” and “Bailar” are also included on Gang Affiliated, and they are the only tracks in which 4Hunnid’s leading lady Day Sulan appears. Mitch only makes one appearance on “Might Be” while D3Szn and Tay2xs pretty much carry Gang Affiliated, with five and three appearances, respectively.

How does 4Hunnid’s roster compare to other similar Hip-Hop record labels?

Tracklist:

1. D3Szn, YG & Tay2xs – Op Vibes
2. YG, D3Szn & Day Sulan – Hit Em Up
3. Day Sulan & YG – Bailar
4. D3Szn – Yellow Tape (feat. DDG)
5. D3Szn, Day Sulan, Mitch & YG – Might Be
6. Tay2x – Roxanne (feat. Band Gang Lonnie Bands)
7. D3Szn, Tay2x & YG – My Bruddas

“Boogie” Soundtrack Features Pop Smoke, Polo G, & More

The soundtrack to Eddie Huang’s Boogie has officially arrived, having already garnered attention through Pop Smoke’s involvement in the film. For those who don’t know, the late rapper actually made his acting debut in the new flick, which officially dropped off today. As such, Pop Smoke’s presence on the soundtrack was inevitable; fans will be pleased to know that the Brooklyn drill innovator is involved with four out of fourteen songs, though one is his breakout hit “Welcome To The Party.”

In addition to Pop, the Boogie soundtrack also features appearances from Polo G, Sheff G, 10k Mula, Nycani, Jacquees, Triad God, and more. There’s a clear vibe on this one, an interesting blend of Brooklyn drill and Asian hip-hop, which certainly makes the soundtrack a unique listening experience when played from start to finish. Songs like the hard-hitting “Plug Speak Taiwanese” by Bad Boy Raco G and the atmospheric and emotional “So Pay La” by Triad God will certainly be uncharted territory to many, while the stylings of Sheff G and 10K Mula imbue the tape with a distinctly familiar feel.

Given the disparate sounds and arranged throughout, the Boogie soundtrack successfully captures that cinematic quality, taking listeners on a journey should they be willing to embark. Plus, it’s always welcome to hear some new Pop Smoke. Check it out now.

Tory Lanez Croons His Way Through R&B Capsule “Playboy”

It’s about that time for another Tory Lanez Capsule. It was about a week ago when the multihyphenate performer teased us with the cover art of his latest release, an “R&B Capsule” titled Playboy. Some fans saw this coming after Lanez called on Chris Brown to round out their recently released “F.E.E.L.S.” single, but now we’re able to get a firsthand look at what Lanez has been working on.

There were rumors that the rapper-singer-producer switched things up on Playboy and the project is said to feature all-new productions. Unlike his acclaimed Chixtape series, fans reportedly won’t hear any samples this time around as beats were built from the ground up. Lanez is fervently moving forward as his shooting case looms and it doesn’t look as if he’s allowing for anything to slow him down.

“This R&B Capsule ‘PlayBoy’ …. Was made off of pure pain , heartbreak , and hard liquor …. Tread lightly listening,” Lanez tweeted. C. Breezy is the only lone feature on the record, so stream Playboy and share your thoughts in the comments.

Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats Return With Remix Album “Unlocked 1.5”

They’ve put a new spin on their critically-acclaimed project and it’s an upgrade that fans have already been enjoying. In February 2020, Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats shared their collaborative project Unlocked, and immediately, the visual concept partnered with an immaculate production was praised near and far. The collaboration between the Florida emcee and accomplished producer is a pairing the Hip Hop needs, and they’ve returned for a remix album where you’ll find the original tracklist has been chopped and screwed.

Deluxe albums are all the rage and often, we find artists adding a few new unreleased tracks to the updated album, but we don’t regularly find artists fully and completely remixing their entire records. Both Unlocked and Unlocked 1.5 are deserving of praise, and features on this new version include production credits from Charlie Heat, Jay Versace, GODMODE 950, The Alchemist, and Georgia Anne Muldrow. You’ll also find additional vocals from Kenny Mason, Joey Bada$$, Arlo Parks, and Benny The Butcher.

Drake Delivers “Scary Hours 2” 3-Pack Ahead Of “Certified Lover Boy”

If the rumors are to be believed, Certified Lover Boy is on the way. Akademiks has given us a few updates about Drake’s highly-anticipated, forthcoming album with the news that Drizzy has revealed CLB will hit streaming services sometime in April. There was gossip about Drake taking over “all Summer ’21,” but if Akademiks is to be believed, the OVO mogul is about to run the Spring.

To whet his fans’ whistles, Drake returns with a surprise three-pack: Scary Hours 2. It’s said to be an extension of his 2018 EP of the same name and we’re pretty certain that at least one of these songs will creep its way onto the CLB tracklist. We’ve previously received EPs and drop-offs from Drake including his Care Package and Dark Lane Demo Tapes, and we’ll enjoy this one as we twiddle our thumbs in anticipation of CLB. Stream Scary Hours 2 and let us know what you think of Lil Baby and Rick Ross’s appearance on the record.

Jahmed Taps Freddie Gibbs, Suga Free For “ARMANI”

Los Angeles rapper JAHMED made an incredible formal introduction in 2020 with the release of his debut project, THEBOOFMOBILE. It’s been nearly one year since the project’s release but he’s continued to unveil new single after new single that shines a spotlight on his musical growth. This week, he came through with his latest body of work, ARMANI that follows a slew of singles he unleashed throughout the latter half of 2020. The project is a nine-track effort featuring Freddie Gibbs, who appears on the previously released single, “GLIMPSE,” and Suga Free whose voice opens up ARMANI and appears for a second time on an interlude.

It’s a strong follow-up to 2020’s THEBOOFMOBILE and we’re excited to hear what else he has to come this year. Check his new project out below.
