Joyce Wrice’s “Overgrown” Features Freddie Gibbs, Westside Gunn & More

Joyce Wrice may be a relative newcomer to the game, but she’s already been making steady waves. Today comes the release of her brand new debut album Overgrown, a project that features guest appearances from Freddie Gibbs, Westside Gunn, Lucky Daye, Kaytranada, and more. Already being widely praised as a refreshing dose of new R&B, Wrice’s new project serves to spotlight her talent and versatility, drawing heavy influence from the enduring soul music of years gone by.

Musically, songs like the intimate “Think About You” and the percussive “You” highlight an ear for lush production, with heavy emphasis on intricate guitar work. Though the project is certainly R&B in essence, it’s clear that Wrice holds an appreciation for some of the game’s top-tier lyricists, having enlisted Westside Gunn and Freddie Gibbs on “Westside Gunn’s Interlude” and single “On One” respectively. For the most part, however, Overgrown is Wrice’s show, and she makes a lasting impression that will likely land her a spot on many-a-radar.

Should you be a) a far of R&B music, and b) looking for a new artist to check out, Joyce Wrice will check out both boxes in one fell swoop. Check out her debut Overgrown now, and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Tokyo Jetz Responds To Getting Canceled With “Cancel Culture”

Last summer was characterized by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as well as the protests happening across the United States in response to police brutality. With the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery all fresh on people’s minds in 2020, Hip-Hop fans were shocked when reports surfaced that Atlanta-based rapper Tokyo Jetz had gone viral for an insensitive joke that mocked George Floyd’s death. She quickly apologized, but the news definitely left a stain on her legacy. Now, several months later, it appears that the Grand Hustle artist is touching on the controversy surrounding her last summer on her new project Cancel Culture.

On the cover of her new project, Tokyo Jetz literally strips herself down for a vulnerable pose in a shimmering two-piece. Surrounding the Grand Hustle rapper is a flood of negative and disparaging comments and messages about Tokyo Jetz. One disturbing text bubble reads, “Police finna catch ya son lackin in pop that lil n*gga.” Another one mocks Tokyo Jetz’ relevance, saying, “Everyone saying Tokyo jetz cancelled… welll when tf you ever heard someone say ‘ play that Tokyo ” tf.”

Cancel Culture arrives today laced with 14 tracks, featuring the T.I.-assisted “Know The Rules” and “When We Ride” with Kevin Gates. Other guest appearances on the project include Toosii, Jackboy, and Tokyo Vanity.

Gupadad 4000 & !llmind Team Up For Collab Project “1176”

Over the past month, Guapdad 4000 and !llmind have been getting their fans ready for their collaborative project, starting with the release of “How Many” in February. Earlier last week, the newfound duo aimed to build even more anticipation for the album by dropping off the P-Lo-assisted single “She Wanna.” With such disparate singles, fans were interested in seeing what a full-length effort from the two artists would look like, and now, they finally can because 1176 has finally released.

The 14-track collaborative record arrives today, and as previously reported, 1176 does feature a more serious and, at times, introspective Guapdad 4000. In addition to the previously heard tracks “How Many” and “She Wanna,” Guapdad and !llmind give listeners 12 new tracks, most of which don’t feature any guest appearances. For an eight-song stretch at the core of the album, listeners are treated to the collaborative magic of Gupadad 4000 and !llmind, and towards the end of 1176, impressive collaborations with Tish Hyman and Buddy pop up as well.

How are you feeling about Gupadad 4000 and !llmind’s full-length collaboration? Is this a duo that you would like to hear more from in the future?

Kota The Friend & Statik Selektah Unite For “To Kill A Sunrise”

Kota The Friend has been steadily putting out quality material, having recently dropped off the second volume of Lyrics To Go, and today he’s kept the pattern alive with the Statik Selektah-assisted To Kill A Sunrise. Evocative in one fell swoop of Harper Lee, Kendrick Lamar, picturesque scenic views, Mexican cocktails, and Cypress Hill, the new project appears to another solid effort from the perpetually chill lyricist.

Boasting production across the board from the stalwart Statik Selektah, itself a stamp of quality, To Kill A Sunrise fits Kota’s modus operandi in terms of vibe. Yet there are flourishes of braggadocio, particularly on the triumphant boom-bap opener “Wolves,” a highlight that showcases Kota’s technical prowess. That golden-era spirit is certainly a throughline — Statik’s fingerprints, no doubt — with songs like “The Cold” and “Sunrise” capturing the essence with nostalgic clarity.

As expected, there’s a smooth and easy-going vibe across the thirty-three-minute album, but that’s not to say it’s a low-effort release. Kota’s lyricism demands attention, and listeners will find much to appreciate should they load this one up and give it a solid front-to-back listen. Though not often recognized as one of the game’s top-tier lyricists, it’s likely a matter of coverage, as The Friend’s pen-game has been as consistent as it gets.

Check out To Kill A Sunrise right now, and sound off if you think Kota and Statik’s new collaborative project deserves some attention.
