Death Row Reissues “Above The Rim” OST

Death Row might not be in the hands of Suge Knight anymore but the label’s legacy lives on forever. The era where Death Row dominated was short in comparison to others but its impact produced classic hip-hop records that have withstood the test of time. Earlier this year, it was announced that eOne Music (under the Hasbro umbrella) was sold to Blackstone following their acquisition of the label in 2019. However, they’re still moving forward with celebrating the label’s 30th anniversary.

Following the launch of “The Death Row Experience” earlier this month, Death Row Records have re-issed the 1994 soundtrack for Above The Rim. The re-mastered edition of the project includes original tracks plus three rare singles including 2Pac’s “Pain.”

FCG Heem Releases “Neighborhood Poetry” Project

FCG Heem is among those in the new generation of rap who are efficient at tugging at heartstrings. The rapper’s melodious delivery resonates with the bubbling sound of the South but it’s his description of the world around him that’s helped him build a dedicated fanbase. On Friday, the rapper unveiled his latest body of work, Neighborhood Poetry which finds him honing in on his talents even further. The project is fourteen songs in length with Heem largely holding it down by himself. However, he does bring on a few collaborators to round out the project such as Toosii, NoCap, and Pooh Shiesty.

Check out the latest body of work from FCG Heem below and sound off in the comments with your thoughts on Neighborhood Poetry.

Dark Lo & Harry Fraud Drop Off New Album “Borrowed Time”

Harry Fraud has been quietly holding it down with one of the year’s hardest production campaigns, and today that streak continues with the release of Borrowed Time, his new collaboration with Philadelphia rapper Dark Lo. Currently facing the possibility of nine years in prison for a charge of witness intimidation, Lo remains hellbent on moving forward, capitalizing on being out on bail by making his presence felt with a nine-track dose of raw hip-hop music.

With a pair of guests in Boldy James and AR-Ab, the stage largely belongs to Lo and Fraud, who showcase impressive chemistry across the twenty-five-minute endeavor. Opening track “Daily Prayers” sets the tone, with Lo firing off rugged bars over Fraud’s vintage guitar samples. “Premonition” finds the pair dabbling in a spookier street sound, a likely highlight for anyone who digs what the Griselda movement has been bringing to the table. Speaking of which, Boldy James is always welcome, his self-assured presence elevating “Missing Summers” into a project highlight.

Harry Fraud opened up about working with Dark Lo, a process that clearly inspired him on a creative level. “Getting to work with Lo on a full project was really important to me because it was an opportunity to showcase his versatility as an artist,” Harry Fraud explained in a press release. “When you hear his voice, he just brings something different, artistically, and in the way he carries himself. 100% authenticity in every aspect of his life; you can feel the passion he has in every bar he spits, it’s contagious.”

“This album is different from all of my previous projects because of where I am in my life, all that I have been through in the last year and a half. I have dealt with a lot of loss, it has been stressful, the ups and the downs,” adds Lo. “I finally was able to let everything that has been building up over the last year and change out, and that’s what this is here.”

Yung Baby Tate Is Sensational On The Deluxe Version Of “After The Rain”

After going viral earlier this year for the positive, self-affirming song “I Am” with Flo Milli, Yung Baby Tate is back and ready to capitalize on her moment. In March, the Atlanta singer-rapper-producer spoke with HNHH for the new Rise & Grind series, and during her interview, she teased the release of her highly anticipated music video for “I Am” as well as the deluxe version of her December project After The Rain. As of today, both of those aforementioned releases have seen the light of day.

Building upon her December project After The RainYung Baby Tate has extended the project with six new tracks, including the recently released single “Eenie Meenie.”

While the original version of After The Rain featured rising femcee Flo Milli and LVRN vanguard 6lack, the six new additions to the project find Yung Baby Tate handling things all on her own. Skating over production from Take A Daytrip, JetsonMade, !llmind, and more, Yung Baby Tate brings more authentic, introspective, and empowering songs to an already solid project.

Benny The Butcher & 38 Spesh Drop Off “Trust The Sopranos”

Benny The Butcher’s Black Soprano Family has joined forces with 38 Spesh’s Trust Gang for the aptly titled Trust The Sopranos, a new compilation project featuring talents from both lyrically sharp camps. Featuring contributions from Benny, Spesh, El Camino, Klass Murda, Ransom, Ampichino, Heem, Rick Hyde, Che Noir, and Chase Fetti, the album is yet another dose of quality hip-hop that further bolsters the narrative that the golden era is alive and well.

Though the album features plenty of inspired performances across the board, Che Noir leaves one hell of an impact on the haunting highlight “Price Of Fame.” “Look they put a black person for sale,” she spits. “Use churches and tell that the man we worship is pale / if you can read that’s why they murdered the males / now it’s ironic how these ni*gas catch a sentence fo they learn how to spell.”

Though the lack of a consistent lineup keeps Trust The Sopranos from true cohesion, there’s enough chemistry and common ground to keep things moving. It’s also a worthy showcase of the BSF and Trust Gang rosters, both of whom boast some stellar talent worthy of further spotlight. If you’ve come to value what The Butcher and Spesh have brought to the table thus far, do yourself a solid and add Trust The Sopranos to your rotation — if so, be sure to share your highlight tracks in the comments below.

Young M.A. Drops Off New Album “Off The Yak”

Young M.A has come through to deliver her brand new album Off The Yak, which further explores the New York rapper’s relationship with the Brooklyn Drill sound. It’s a natural fit for M.A, whose self-assured bars pair effectively with the percussive production. On that note, beat-making responsibilities are handled by her longtime collaborator Mike Zombie, as well as NY Bangers, Jai Beats, and more.

Clocking in at a little over thirty-two minutes in runtime, the eleven-track project is another strong release from M.A, who continues to assert herself as one of her city’s authoritative voices. There’s often a sense that questioning her would be most unwise, and the quietly aggressive lyricist is at her best when asserting her dominance. “I don’t even gotta say I’m queen of my city no more,” she muses, on the intro track “Successful.” “They know I’m the queen. They already jacked that.”

While largely the focal sound of the project, Off The Yak isn’t entirely fueled by Brooklyn Drill production. Songs like “Yak Thoughts” and “Big Steppa” find M.A. putting in work over a different vibe, showcasing her adaptability. For the most part, however, the hard-hitting bangers and braggadocious bars are the main attraction, and Young M.A’s latest further solidifies the notion that she’s among the best in her class. Curren$y & Alchemist’s “Covert Coup” Hits Streaming

Curren$y Spitta’s discography requires serious dedication to experience; not that it’s even remotely grueling to listen to the prolific emcee, but the scope of his catalog is simply overwhelming to behold. Yet among Spitta’s die-hard disciples, there has been a long-endured fondness for his 2010 release Covert Coup, produced in its entirety by The Alchemist.

As many hip-hop heads have come to recognize, anything that finds The Alchemist stepping up and handling business behind the boards will always be an enjoyable experience. In the case of Covert Coup, he blesses Curren$y with some of his rawest production, a refreshing contrast to Spitta’s typically luxurious aesthetic. As such, there’s unique energy throughout the tape that helps it stand out amidst a sea of solid work, and its long-awaited arrival on streaming services is a most welcome development.

Boasting features from Freddie Gibbs (with whom Spitta would one day lace the Fetti collab album)Smoke DZA, Fiend, and the late Prodigy, Covert Coup is a nostalgic listen that actually sounds right at home in today’s landscape. And with rumors swirling that Curren$y and Alc have been steadily cooking up a sequel, now is the perfect time to dive back into one of the mixtape era’s beloved deeper cuts. Check out this re-release now, and sound off in the comments with your favorite tracks.

SpotemGottem’s “Most Wanted” Showcases His Versatility As A Solo Artist

Thanks to the #junebugchallenge, the entire world has its ears on SpotemGottem, and now the rising Florida artist aims to follow up the success of “Beat Box” and his 2020 project Final Destination with a new full-length release.

Led by previously heard singles such as “Federal” and all of the “Beat Box” remixes, SpotemGottem’s new project Most Wanted has officially arrived, and the twelve-track project only comes with one guest feature, courtesy of DaBaby

In addition to featuring the DaBaby remix of “Beat Box,” the first section of the project is filled with minimal, yet hard-hitting beats that are reminiscent of the Florida artist’s breakout hit. On Most Wanted‘s fourth track, “No Tik Tok,” SpotemGottem makes fun of artists who spend all of their time on TikTok, which is hilariously ironic considering that the beloved social media app is what helped propel his career over the past several months.

Elsewhere on the project, the Final Destination artist showcases his versatility, with songs like the melodic island-tinged “Dirty Diana” and the fierce two-minute track “Who’s Next.”
