Lil Nas X Is Moving With A Sense Of Urgency On “Light Again!”

You can nitpick Lil Nas X all you want, but if there’s one thing that you can’t deny is his ability to make infectious hits. The Georgia rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer has shown that time and time again with songs like “INDUSTRY BABY,” “MONTERO,” and of course, “Old Town Road.” Even though it’s been a little bit since we have heard from him, he hasn’t lost his Midas touch. We say that because pretty soon, Lil Nas X should be able to add “LIGHT AGAIN!” to that stacked list of chart-toppers. This is one of his singles that will find a home on his upcoming sophomore album, DREAMBOY. The Georgia native has been teasing this new era for a little bit now and it’s inching closer to becoming reality.

Based on the promotion and some of the things that Nas X has said online, it seems like he just wants to find himself again and release the material he wants to. Sure, the expectations are going to remain fierce, but hearing “LIGHT AGAIN!” he sounds eager, urgent, but also more carefree in some ways. “Back ends, booked up, look up / I’m flyin’, yeah, I’m free now, see now / Society’s tie on me released now / F*** crazy, I’m finna go senile,” he raps. The track has a grand presence to it with thumping drums and the overall swelling build-ups throughout. It’s more of an EDM/pop/dance blend, but the hip-hop elements are still there. Nas X looks to be teasing a more explorative sonic direction with DREAMBOY. as well and we are ready for the ride to come.

Quotable Lyrics:

J. Cole said it’s memes or mills
But I’m the king and the jester though
N****s really wanna wipe me down
I got more patience than a hospital
Swear these n****s rather beef with me
They never beef with life’s obstacles

Lil Nas X’s Riotous ‘Light Again’ Video Recalls Flip Phone-Era Rave Culture

In the chaotic video for Lil Nas X‘s new single, “Light Again,” a normal teenage garage party gets really, really out of hand. The video evokes the aesthetics and rave culture of the early 2000s, starting off with a flip phone invitation to a house party that quickly expands to a warehouse, then spills out into the streets, ultimately becoming a riot-level, citywide event.

The song itself invokes both Nas’ newest musical direction and some nostalgic vibes of classic hip-house — something that’s sure to irk Lil Nas critic Azealia Banks, although he’s already demonstrated that he has the perfect comebacks for the spiteful siren.

Nas previously shared a teaser of “Light Again” with a message to fans suggesting that his Dreamboy era will likely focus more on making him and his listeners happy than his prior focus on trolling the mainstream establishment.

Earlier this week, he shared the trailer for Dreamboy, which also promised to remind folks where he came from and get back to making music that uplifts his identity rather than trying to nail down the ever-elusive follow-up hit to No. 1s like “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and “Industry Baby.”

A new era of Lil Nas X is upon us. In October, he declared he’d be dropping new music in November, and now he’s getting more specific.

Yesterday (November 10), he teased “Dreamboy” (the title of an album, perhaps?) saying that “phase 1” begins on November 11. This came after he announced a new song called “Light Again” would be released this week.

Nas shared a demo version of “Light Again” back in March and said at the time, “I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to have this sh*t up, or I don’t know what my CEO thinks right now, or whatever. […] Bro, these last couple years have been crazy, ’cause I’ve made so much music and I just want to release music. I just want to release music, but expectations are just like… insane. Like, I can’t even have fun. I just want to f*ckin’ have fun with this sh*t. I don’t even give a f*ck about all the other sh*t. Of course I want to, like, be No. 1 all the time, I want every song to go up, and I want you to go crazy. But it’s like, at the same time, I want to f*ckin’ have fun. I want to go and live life, I just want to make music. I don’t want to have to do crazy sh*t all the time. I want to make music, I want to f*ckin’ have fun, I want to live.”

Lil Nas X is back with new music, but it looks like he’s not really supposed to be sharing it. The song, officially titled “Light Again [demo 17]” on SoundCloud, has a strong dance influence, and indeed, Nas tagged his upload as “Dance & EDM.” The track is currently only available on SoundCloud.

In a four-minute video posted on Instagram after sharing the song, Nas starts, “I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to have this sh*t up, or I don’t know what my CEO thinks right now, or whatever.” He continues:

“Bro, these last couple years have been crazy, ’cause I’ve made so much music and I just want to release music. I just want to release music, but expectations are just like… insane. Like, I can’t even have fun. I just want to f*ckin’ have fun with this sh*t. I don’t even give a f*ck about all the other sh*t. I want to go and live life, I just want to make music. I don’t want to have to do crazy sh*t all the time. I want to make music, I want to f*ckin’ have fun, I want to live.”

He then spends the rest of the clip dancing along to the song.
