Something For Everyone: How Goldenvoice Is Changing The LA Summer Festival Landscape

For years, when people talked about festival culture in LA, they were talking about Coachella. Though, admittedly, many Angelenos do make the two-plus hour, 120 mile trip out into the desert each spring for the long-running festival, Palm Springs is still not Los Angeles. And while the city has supported a number of pop-up and one-off festivals over the years, for a city as bustling and robust as it is, it hasn’t managed to sustain as robust a festival marketplace as a city like New York or Chicago.

That could all be changing, though, thanks in part to Goldenvoice. Best known nationally for putting on the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, Goldenvoice has been producing concerts in the LA area for over 40 years. They were purchased by events behemoth AEG in 2001, but have somehow managed to still maintain an air of corporate separation and indie cred.

Coming out of the pandemic, Goldenvoice has gone all-in on festivals in the LA area, putting on five in the area immediately surrounding the Rose Bowl. There was Cruel World, which took place in mid-May and highlighted ‘80s and ‘90s goth and mod powerhouses like Bauhaus, Morrissey, and Devo. The following weekend, the company popped up Just Like Heaven, which focused on what it called “era-defining” indie rock, like The Shins, Modest Mouse, M.I.A., Bloc Party, and more. Palomino launches July 9, bringing the vibe of LA’s legendary country music haven the Palomino Club to the region with acts like Willie Nelson and Kacey Musgraves, and in August, the Rose Bowl will host both the returning Head In The Clouds festival, which self-describes as a fest focused on “amplifying Asian art and culture,” and This Ain’t No Picnic, which revisits the feel and vibe of an indie rock fest Goldenvoice first threw back in the late ‘90s.

To get a better handle on what these fests could mean for Los Angeles and for the festival marketplace at large, Uproxx talked to three Goldenvoice festival bookers about the company’s push into what seems to be a more niche festival space: Stacey Vee, who snags acts for Stagecoach and Palomino, Jenn Yacoubian, who co-books This Ain’t No Picnic with Vee, and Ellen Lu, who puts together Head In The Clouds.

Vee says that Goldenvoice’s sudden expansion into LA festivals came in part because of the company’s reaction to the pandemic. When staffers at the company would meet to chat about the company’s future, they’d always end up circling back to the company’s past and present, as well. She says the group was attracted to “recognizing some of the company’s big wins and the special things that we’ve done in the past,” including festivals like This Ain’t No Picnic.

The pandemic helped launch the expansion in other ways, too. Yacoubian says that, during lockdown, she and Vee would go on semi-weekly runs around the Rose Bowl just to catch up. They ended up falling in love with the site, which Goldenvoice had used before, but hadn’t really latched onto wholeheartedly. “It feels very unique for a festival setting in LA, because those have typically been a bit more urban, like in parking lots or in other areas,” she says. “This one’s totally grass, which I haven’t really seen in LA before — especially with shade — and there are all these really wonderful views and amenities.”

That setting, the Brookside Golf Club, also helped determine the fests the company decided to pursue, in a way. “This Ain’t No Picnic was a precursor to the early days of Coachella, and it was really edgy and innovative,” says Vee, who called the original fest “a beautiful day in a beautiful park.”

Pasadena is also part of the San Gabriel Valley, which holds one of the largest concentrations of Asian communities in the States. Goldenvoice teamed with 88rising to put Head In The Clouds at the Golf Club in 2021, and the fest was such a success they decided to bring it back again, all while pushing even more into where they think the event’s strengths are. The fest is once again teaming up with the 626 Night Market to curate its food. “It felt like it would be a miss to not bring” the Night Market back, Lu says, noting that treats from all over the Asian diaspora will be available, from Japanese food to Balinese fare.

It’s not just food, either, Lu says. “Last year, we made the mistake of only having one boba stand out in the GA section, and that was probably the longest line at the fest,” she explains. “This year, we said, ‘let’s talk about maybe having a boba world separate from the 626 where it’s actually just a ton of different boba stands where people can choose from different types of drinks.” She says it’s a natural evolution of the festival, which isn’t just about music, but also about culture as a whole. If this year goes well, she says, then maybe next year they bring in comedy. “There’s so much more for us to celebrate,” she says,” and that’s what we intend to do.”

In a way, each of Goldenvoice’s festivals is a celebration of a unique culture and sphere. While Head In The Clouds is certainly the most massive and defined, Palomino pays tribute to Los Angeles’ country music heritage, which is quite often forgotten. “The Palomino club in North Hollywood was such a big part of the outlaw, extracurricular, ‘what is and isn’t country music’ kind of vibe,” says Vee. The club inspired the Palomino Stage at the Stagecoach festival, and it’s always hosted artists she says “you wouldn’t think belong at a country festival,” like Smokey Robinson and Tom Jones. For the Palomino Festival this year, she booked from the near fringes of the country world, tapping acts that push the boundaries of what modern country can be, like Old Crow Medicine Show and Orville Peck.

This Ain’t No Picnic is less of a statement than a celebration, according to Yacoubian. She says, “That was one where we just thought, ‘I’m from LA and I know that people in LA love to celebrate summer and love to be outside. It felt like that fest hadn’t existed in the market for a minute and we wanted to bring back that wonderful feeling of celebrating summer.”

Booking a festival like Picnic, Yacoubian says, does have some science behind it, in terms of making sure it’s a financial success, but really “it’s totally a gut feeling.” Snagging and reuniting an act like Le Tigre can help the fest draw fans from outside the LA area and intrigue people who either never got a chance to see them during their first go-around. Creating the rest of the lineup felt natural to Vee and Yacoubian, with the latter saying “it was truly like we were booking our friends.”

“The Strokes and LCD [Soundsystem] and Mac DeMarco have all been in the Goldenvoice family for so long that it felt fun and exciting to be able to create this awesome show with our friends again,” Yacoubian says. “Stacey lives in Highland Park. I live in Glassell Park. This show is for us, and it’s for the other people who are at Walt’s Bar.”

To look at it another way, This Ain’t No Picnic is a fest by Angelenos for Angelenos, with all the diversity of life, experience, and circumstance that indicates. All five of Goldenvoice’s summer festivals could fit that same bill, a move that Vee says is far from coincidental. “We want to have something for everybody,” she says. “We want every fan to feel like it’s their festival, so whatever experience they’re looking for, we’ve got that for them.”

88rising Announces The Head In The Clouds Festival 2022 Lineup And Dates

After returning to a live event in 2021 and hosting a thrilling set at Coachella this spring, 88rising’s Head In The Clouds Festival now has dates for its 2022 event at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The groundbreaking label also announced Head In The Clouds Festival’s 2022 lineup for August 20 and 21.

It includes the label’s staples such as Jackson Wang, NIKI, and Rich Brian, as well as a wide-ranging collection of Asian artists including a joint set between Audrey Nuna and Deb Never(!), Korean-American battle rap mainstay Dumbfoundead, Seattle rapper Jay Park, Oakland singer-songwriter Mxmtoon, Japanese rap quartet Terikyaki Boyz, and a DJ set from Joji as Yebi Labs.

In addition, there will be activations from 626 Night Market, which will curate the festival’s food options, Magic Man and the Thunder Theatre, YEAR OF seltzer, and Joji’s Pop Up Shop. Tickets go on pre-sale Thursday, May 26, and general sale Friday, May 27. You can find out more information here.

Head In The Clouds Is Los Angeles’ Next Great Music Festival

Los Angeles isn’t exactly known as a hub for successful music festivals. Sure, there’s Coachella a solid two hours out of the city, but within the county lines (and neighboring Orange County), the reputation is a bit more scattershot. Events like FYF, Burgerama, and Beach Goth have all (rightfully) gone the way of the dodo after various levels of controversy, while fests like Made In America, Detour, and Festival Supreme couldn’t quite survive in the competitive atmosphere. Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw is the class of the town, and its producer Goldenvoice has been further dabbling into more niche events in the area of late. These can make you feel old (the aughts indie-celebrating Just Like Heaven), make you feel really old (the ’80s nostalgia brandishing Cruel World), or, as over the past weekend, make you feel like a part of something bigger than yourself, at 88 Rising’s Head In The Clouds festival.

Head In The Clouds debuted as a single-day event in 2018 and 2019 at Los Angeles Historic State Park, drawing more than 20,000 fans and necessitating this more fully-realized version. The ethos is pretty simple yet crucial: a celebration of Asian music and culture, both from the Asian continent and from Asian-Americans. Speaking with the LA Times earlier this year, 88 Rising (and festival) founder Sean Miyashiro said, “We just want the best of Asian music, so we can invite anyone. The last two fests were scrappy but monumental for us. This one is literally the live interpretation of everything we stand for.”

The resulting festival felt like a revelation. For cultures that often note that they feel invisible within American society, which was only underscored by the Covid crisis that saw them the subject of violence and scorn, this couldn’t be more important, especially as the event highlighted the depth and breadth of their influence. This could feel hyperlocal, like the San Gabriel Valley homage that was the 626 Night Market, to ocean-spanning, like a massive set from K-pop legend CL. During her sunset performance, rap star Saweetie highlighted her own heritage (Black, Filipino, and Chinese) while also shining a spotlight on the “Asian kings and queens” in the audience. If the audience didn’t feel seen in their day-to-day lives, Head In The Clouds was sure that Asian people wouldn’t feel that way on the festival grounds.

It’s a concept that makes more sense as the music world becomes more global. Festivals highlighting music from Africa and Latin America are becoming more common, while micro-festivals around specific cultures are beginning to leave the shadows for the mainstream. Diversity in the major music festivals is also more common, where occurrences like Blackpink’s appearing at Coachella and J Balvin’s dominance of the festival circuit are paving the way for more like them in the future, with international music treated like less like a curiosity and more like a pillar of popular music.

The majority of the big acts at Head In The Clouds wouldn’t feel out of place at a Coachella of Lollapalooza, like Japanese Breakfast, whose “banger after banger” performance proved why Michelle Zauner is one more music’s most exciting personalities, and Saturday headliner Rich Brian, whose earnest bars come across even better live than they do on record. But for someone like CL, who despite a new album that saw a big Rolling Stone feature and an appearance on Lil Dickey’s Dave remains unknown to many outside of Asian circles, the festival provided an argument for why that needed to change asap. The training that went into her K-pop career as a member of 2NE1 was on display as she danced, sang, rapped, and gave her all in such a manner that should put all American pop stars on notice that they need to up their game, immediately.

Taking place just a day after the tragedy at Astroworld in Houston, there was a clear reaction from the festival, with waters being distributed at a frantic rate and security responding to calls for help with prompt and thorough assistance. But still, the events of the day before hung heavily on Head In The Clouds, and I imagine it will over festivals for a long time. But Head In The Clouds was a reminder that this kind of event can be so much more than the party atmosphere that many are reduced to. Festivals can be meaningful celebrations, and here’s to hoping that Head In The Clouds keeps growing and assuming its place as Los Angeles’ next great music festival.

88Rising’s Head In The Clouds Adds Illenium To Their Already Stacked Lineup

In exactly one month, 88Rising, the record label and management company home to Asian and Asian-American artists, will deliver the third rendition of their Head In The Clouds festival. It’s an event the group has hosted every year since 2018, with the exception of 2020, due to the pandemic. Ahead of the showcase’s kick-off on November 6, 88Rising announced a new addition to the festival’s lineup: DJ and producer Illenium.

Illenium’s addition to the fest comes after he shared Fallen Embers earlier this year. He joins an already stacked lineup for Head In The Clouds. Other performers for the showcase include Joji, Saweetie, Guapdad 4000, Japanese Breakfast, Beadoobee, and many more.

During an interview with Uproxx about the festival last month, Ollie Zhang, 88Rising’s Chief Of Staff, spoke about the diversity of the showcase’s lineup.

“I think that’s always been 88Rising’s mission from since the start, ever since we were just shooting videos and putting them up on YouTube,” he said. “The goal was always to highlight all different types of music. Asian music is so broad and diverse. Everyone’s coming from a different place and we want to be able to represent that on the stage as well.”

88Rising’s Head In The Clouds Festival Is A Diverse Celebration Of Asian Representation In Music

New music festivals pop up all the time, especially in California. One of the most promising to emerge over the past few years, though, is Head In The Clouds. 88Rising, the beloved record label and management company that is home to Asian and Asian-American artists, has hosted the event since 2018. After taking 2020 off for obvious reasons, the fest is returning this year, on November 6 and 7. While the event previously went down at Los Angeles State Historic Park, it now has a new home at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

With the new venue comes a hell of a lineup; Joji, Rich Brian, Niki, Saweetie, CL, Beabadoobee, Guapdad 4000, Japanese Breakfast, The Linda Lindas, and others highlight the bill. That’s quite the group of high achievers who have dominated the music landscape in their own ways recently: Saweetie is currently promoting her own McDonald’s meal, Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner is both a music favorite and a best-selling author, and Beabadoobee is one of the biggest rising heroes of indie rock (and the latest Uproxx cover star).

Aside from the level of success on the bill, the stylistic diversity of its artists is noteworthy. Ollie Zhang, 88Rising’s Chief Of Staff, tells Uproxx that this was very much intentional.

“I think that’s always been 88Rising’s mission from since the start, ever since we were just shooting videos and putting them up on YouTube,” he said. “The goal was always to highlight all different types of music. Asian music is so broad and diverse. Everyone’s coming from a different place and we want to be able to represent that on the stage as well. To have such a broad range of artists all sharing the same stage or same festival, I think, is totally an unprecedented thing anywhere in the world, not just in America.”

Even beyond Head In The Clouds, Zhang says that while “there’s still so much road to cover” when it comes to Asian representation in the music landscape, he’s pleased with where things stand now: “I think that what this festival is now probably wouldn’t have existed and couldn’t have existed six years ago when we started the company.”

He continued, “You’ll be able to find an amazing artist who is Asian-American or from Asia that can speak to you and resonate with you, no matter what type of music that you’re into. I think that’s always been the case no matter what point of time you’ve been in, but I think that we’ve definitely been a part of the changing landscape and pushing those artists forward. I’m excited to see where everything goes in the next couple of years.”

Speaking of the near future and the potential thereof, Toronto multi-instrumentalist Luna Li is one of the up-and-comers on this year’s lineup Zhang is looking forward to seeing more. “When we first come across her, it was just her doing bedroom jams with harps and violin and all these different types of instruments,” he said. “I feel like she’s just a really cutting-edge artist that I’m excited to kind of watch her growth over the next couple of years.”

He also shouted out The Linda Lindas: “I think they’re just full of raucous energy and they obviously had a bit of a viral moment earlier in the year. Excited just to see the energy that they bring to the stage.”

While Head In The Clouds had to leave the stage in 2020, 88Rising thrived in the livestream space. Virtual events like the “Asia Rising Forever” festival (a benefit for Asian Americans Advancing Justice) and Joji’s “The Extravaganza” were “some of the best experiences that 88Rising ever produced,” Zhang said. While noting that in-person events and livestreams are “still pretty distinct mediums,” Zhang believes there are elements from the latter that can translate to the former, suggesting that the online stream of this year’s Head In The Clouds can be more than “just simply broadcasting the camera feed.”

While in-person concerts are coming back, though, it sounds like Zhang still sees the value in livestreams: “I think what we’ve learned is that the livestream concert has a ton of value and can be a really great way to present an artist that can be really different from what an in-person show is.”

Whether or not livestreams are a thing of the past for 88Rising, Head In The Clouds has become a big part of its future. The esteem the label has built for itself over the past few years has allowed this year’s lineup to be a truly exceptional showcase of both the best of 88Rising and of Asian music more broadly.

“I think that the lineup this year is really great and representative of the platform that 88Rising has become,” Zhang proclaimed. “I think it’s our best lineup yet and I’m excited to see it all take place.”
