As part of its commitment to creating a holistic experience for attendees, HFC will extend its footprint to include a culinary court component featuring a wide range of offerings from local restaurants and food vendors as well as a reimagining of a Harlem staple with its Mart 125 Marketplace powered by
SheaMoisture in support of small, Harlem-based businesses. Named and modeled after the famed economic hub and incubator that housed a number of small, Black-owned businesses located on 125th Street, this new iteration of the marketplace will celebrate the rich history and cultural and economic
significance of Mart 125 – showcasing Black-owned, Harlem-based hospitality, retail, and cultural entrepreneurs.

Fat Joe, Cam’ron, Ma$e, And Others To Perform At First Harlem Festival Of Culture

The 2023 Harlem Festival of Culture, or HFC, has added some hip-hop superstars to its performance roster. The upcoming event will be the first ever iteration of the festival. It will take place from July 28 to 30 at New York’s Randall’s Island Park. The HFC aims to celebrate the richness of black music and culture. Because of this, the event draws inspiration from the historic Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969. That was documented in the award-winning film Summer of Soul, which was directed by none other than Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

Yvonne McNai is the co-founder and technical & talent producer of HFC. She expressed her excitement for the festival upon its announcement. Additionally, McNai emphasized its significance in showcasing the diversity and brilliance of black music and culture. Michael L. Bivins from Bell Biv DeVoe served as the festival’s creative director. He highlighted the special connection between the event and the Harlem community. Furthermore, Bivins pointed out his pride in participating and supporting local businesses.

The HFC Has An Impressive Roster

As seen in the graphic above, the HFC will feature performances by many prominent artists. These include Fat Joe, Cam’ron, Ma$e, Teyana Taylor, Muni Long, and Wyclef Jean. Additionally, MC Lyte, a native New Yorker, has been selected as the host of the event, and she expressed how special it was to be part of the inaugural Harlem Festival of Culture. “As a native New Yorker, I’m honored to host the very first Harlem Festival of Culture. [HFC] has planned something special that I think everyone – whether they’re from around the corner, across the country or around the world – will enjoy,” Lyte said.

Co-founder Yvonne McNai went on to underscore the reason for the festival. “Ultimately, HFC is our love letter to Harlem,” she said. “…we’re excited to grow it into a landmark cultural experience that encapsulates all the things that make Uptown the nexus of innovation, cultural expression and a place of true community-building.” Tickets for the Harlem Festival of Culture are now available for purchase on the festival’s official website. Lil Kim And Friends’ Apollo Theater Concert Will Kick Off The Harlem Festival Of Culture This Month

This year, the Harlem music festival documented in Questlove’s directorial debut Summer Of Soul is returning and will actually be a year-long affair celebrating the history and culture of the New York neighborhood and its influence. While the Harlem Festival Of Culture will mostly take place in July, a series of related events will kick off this month with a concert at the legendary Apollo Theater headlined by rap icon Lil Kim.

The Jump Off With Lil Kim And Friends is billed for January 26, which is incidentally the Apollo’s 89th anniversary. Yvonne McNair, the Harlem Festival Of Culture’s co-founder and talent producer, said in a statement, “As we prepared to start on this road to the launch of the festival, we realized that this was also a milestone year for hip-hop and knew that our first major event out of the gate had to be special and center around hip-hop and R&B.”

“One of the tenets of HFC’s mission is to celebrate and preserve the cultural contributions of the Black Diaspora in music, media, art, fashion, and entertainment. Hip-hop culture has touched every single part of society, and there is no artist that better represents its far-reaching impact than Lil Kim. We’re so thrilled that Kim will help us curate the evening to bring a full, one-of-a-kind music experience to audiences in the city where it all began. We’re also excited to launch this event and our festival journey with our partners.”

“Apollo was like my backyard,” said Kim herself. “I played there so much and every time it was always love. The crowd is always amazing!”

Over the past year, Kim’s influence has become more apparent than ever, as successors to her raunchy rap legacy like Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion talked about collaborating with her, and even Nicki Minaj acknowledged her impact.
