TSM Sells LCS Slot To Shopify Rebellion

TSM, one of the oldest esports orgs in North America, has officially left the League of Legends scene. The organization confirmed today (September 20) that they had sold their place in the LCS to Shopify Rebellion. It is believed that TSM is looking to join another Tier 1 league such as China or South Korea. However, the departure of TSM ends a 12-year tenure in the North American scene.

“The acquisition of our LCS slot is a milestone moment for TSM and the entire esports community, especially by a team that shares our passion for excellence and growth. With the relentless pursuit of victory that has defined TSM, and the innovative spirit of Shopify Rebellion, we believe this move will ignite fresh success and further elevate the competitive landscape of esports. And thank you to Riot for their exceptional partnership in this process,” TSM CEO Andy Dinh said in a statement.

Shopify Rebellion Join The LCS

Shopify Rebellion, which is owned by the e-commerce platform, already has several esports ventures. Since 2021, they have fielded teams in VALORANT, StarCraft, Dota 2, Halo, Street Fighter 6, and Rocket League. “Entering League of Legends – one of the largest esports titles, with a rich competitive history – felt like an obvious next step for us as we continue to grow our presence in esports. We’re excited to work with the former TSM roster and for them to compete in the LCS under the Shopify Rebellion banner,” said Shopify’s esports program development lead Dario Wünsch.

However, will that be the only change this offseason? According to League of Legends content creator Daniel “dGon” Gonzales, the North American LCS could see a bona fide exodus this offseason. Speaking on the Facecheck podcast, Gonzales claimed that an unnamed LCS team had already sold their franchise slot in the league and would be leaving before the start of the next split. However, at the time of writing, no further details about this mystery team have been revealed. North American free agency will begin in late November, after Worlds 2023 has concluded.

T1 Gumayusi Suggests Worlds 2023 Could Be Current Roster’s Last Ride

Gumayusi, the star ADC of T1, had made comments that suggest the current roster will not remain together for the 2024 season. “Worlds is special every year, and I know our fans might not like it when I say this, but I think this might be the last Worlds we play as a team. In a way, I think it’s more meaningful this time because I want to win the tournament with this team. Also, for Faker and T1, it’s their first Worlds in Korea, so they have a strong desire to win. I hope it will be a tournament where we can make up for our runner-up finish in the past,” Gumayusi told Naver.

The current iteration of T1 (Zeus, Oner, Faker, Gumayusi, Keria) has been together since the 2021 season. Zeus, Oner, and Keria all joined the team in late 2020 after a down year for the prolific franchise. However, their results have been mixed. They failed to win an LCK title in 2021 and lost in the semifinals at Worlds. 2022 appeared to be a better year for the squad. However, they were upset in the Grand Final of Worlds by DRX. Furthermore, T1 has lost its spot as Korea’s perennial champion. They have finished second in the last three LCK splits (Summer 2022, Spring 2023, Summer 2023). In each one, they lost decisively to Gen.G each time. The aggregated record across those three splits is 9-2 to Gen.G.

Last Dance For T1?

As mentioned by Gumayusi, despite T1’s longstanding dominance, this is actually the first time that the team will play at Worlds hosted by their home nation. Additionally, people are unsure just how long Faker has left in his pro career. While the star midlaner is contracted through 2025, his quality of play has been slowly declining in recent years. Furthermore, for the first time in several years, T1 had to play without Faker as he rehabbed from an arm injury. Much like the ’95/96 Bulls, this could be the “Last Dance” for one of the most recognizable LCK rosters in recent years.

However, Gumayusi’s comments should not come as too much of a surprise. There have been some rumors about a change up at T1 to compete with the likes of Gen.G. Meanwhile, Zeus and Keria are both on expiring contracts while Oner is signed through 2024. It remains to be seen what a strong run at Worlds 2023 will have on these decisions. At MSI 2023 in May, T1 finished third behind Chinese powerhouses JDG and Bilibili Gaming. Both of those teams will be seen as title favorites at Worlds.

Fnatic To Keep Wunder In The Lineup For LEC Finals Weekend

With Óscar “Oscarinin” Muñoz still sidelined as he recovers from hand surgery, Fnatic has announced that Martin “Wunder” Hansen will remain in the lineup for the LEC Finals. “We’re not done yet – @wunderlol will continue substituting in the top lane as we take to the stage in Montpellier! 🇫🇷 @OscarininXD’s hand injury requires more time to heal, so we’ll make sure to fight our hardest for the LEC Trophy. Can’t wait to see you all in France!” the organization wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Oscarinin was ruled out Fnatic’s lower bracket semifinal against Team BDS on August 28. It was revealed that the Spanish top laner had undergone hand surgery. Furthermore, he would be ruled out for an undetermined amount of time. Wunder, who was benched by Fnatic in February, stepped back into the lineup and posted a 10/11/29 stat line in the team’s 3-2 series against Team BDS. While Worlds doesn’t begin until mid-October, it’s unclear at this time if Oscarinin will be ready to compete in the tournament. Teams are permitted to bring one substitute player with them to Worlds. Regardless of what occurs in Montpellier, it’s safe to assume that player will be Wunder for Fnatic.

Fnatic Aiming For Breakthrough Weekend

Fnatic will begin the weekend against MAD Lions in the lower bracket final. A place in the Grand Final against G2 is on the line. While they have already qualified for Worlds 2023, a higher seeding would help their longevity in the competition. Taking down MAD Lions would continue a Cinderella run for Fnatic. The team began the Summer split in 9th place in the LEC championship standings. They would need to absolutely crush their opposition during summer to stand a chance to qualifying for Worlds.

After a dominant regular season, they did everything they needed to do in the playoffs to make it to the LEC Finals. Now they sit one series away from contesting their first LEC title since Summer 2021. Fnatic were once regular contenders for the LEC title. However, they have not taken home the league’s top prize since Summer 2018. Follow along with championship weekend here at HotNewHipHop.

Starfield Constellation Edition Review: What Do You Get For Your Money?

Disclaimer: We were kindly given a review copy of the Constellation Edition via GAME, where players in the United Kingdom can purchase the set for £250 online or in-store. This review will be purely for the package that you receive for this premium edition of the game. This review does not include the Starfield game itself on Xbox Series X|S.

The Constellation Edition of Starfield has been the talk of the town, especially with its early arrival for those who pre-ordered. But what exactly does this edition offer that’s causing such a buzz? For starters, this edition allows players to access the game up to 5 days before its official release. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The game comes in a custom steelbook, which houses a redeemable download printed on a credit-shaped token. This token not only gives you the standard version of the game but also includes a ‘Constellation Skin Pack’ for your in-game characters. The upcoming Shattered Space expansion story will also be included. On top of that, access to the official digital Starfield soundtrack and art book is also included.

Constellation Edition Box

The actual Constellation Edition box itself is absolutely stunning. It is hefty, FEELS Premium and more importantly gets you excited to get into the game itself.

The latch system also weirdly feels space-age, and opening up the case to reveal the Chronomark Smartwatch is extremely cool.

Starfield Steelbook

Starfield Steelbook Edition from GAME

The steelbook is the only item packaged separately, possibly to allow fans to sell other contents without parting with their game copy. The rest of the goodies are housed in a plastic moulded reconstruction of the Starfield character’s inventory trunk. This trunk is a spitting image of the in-game version, complete with the Constellation logo, print, and a unique locking mechanism. Inside, you’ll find a Constellation material patch and a Starfield Cronomark Smart Watch, a replica of your character’s in-game wristwear.

The Starfield Cronomark Smart Watch

Starfield Smartwatch

The Cronomark Smart Watch is not just a decorative piece. It’s Bluetooth compatible with most Android and Apple smartphones. The watch offers a digital display with several working features, all styled in the Constellation theme. A spare strap is also provided if you fancy a fabric touch to your space watch.

Once connected to your phone via Bluetooth, you’ll need to download the official app to control the watch settings, access the manual, and receive updates. The watch doesn’t function like typical smartwatches, meaning you won’t be connecting it to other apps or fitness trackers. However, it does have some handy features. It comes with a pedometer to track your steps, a barometer, an accelerometer, a magnetometer, and even a temperature gauge. When synced with your phone, it notifies you of incoming alerts and displays song titles and artists if you’re playing music. Features like the torch function and ‘moon phase’ screen, might seem less practical. However, these all add to the charm.

This is a fantastic piece of kit, and considering the limited edition nature and price compared to an actual Apple watch etc. it’s well worth considering.

Is the Constellation Edition Worth the Investment?

With a price tag of up to $299/£250, almost $200 more than the digital premium edition, one might wonder if the Constellation Edition is worth the extra cost. The answer largely depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re a Bethesda enthusiast who’s mainly interested in gameplay, this edition might not be the best fit for you.

However, if you’re a collector looking for unique Bethesda memorabilia, the Constellation Edition offers limited Starfield merchandise that would look great on display.

For those not fazed by the price and looking for exclusive gaming collectables, this edition is a worthy investment.

SAG-AFTRA Calls For Strike Vote From Video Game Actors

The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike might be able to grow. On September 1, it was announced that the guild’s executive board had sent a strike authorization vote to a new subsection of its membership. SAG members who provide voice or performance acting for video games will have until September 25 to vote on whether they wish to join the ongoing strike comprised of the guild’s film and television actors.

The issues that SAG is prepared to strike over in the video game sector are very similar to what their big and small-screen counterparts are fighting for. The union is fighting for a retroactive 11% pay rise, mandatory on-set medics for hazardous performance acting, and protections against the use of generative AI. AI in particular is an increasing concern for voice actors. “Once again we are facing employer greed and disrespect,” SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said in a statement. “Once again artificial intelligence is putting our members in jeopardy of reducing their opportunity to work.”

SAG Strike Set To Expand

Video game voice actors last went on strike in 2016. The collective action lasted 340 days. However, the impact of the strike was hard to define. For example, Ashley Burch did not record voice lines for her role as Chloe in Life Is Strange: Before the Storm. However, she did serve as a character consultant during the strike. This led Felicia Day to label Burch a scab. Furthermore, there was minimal impact to game releases and SAG agreed to a contract that left out many of their demands.

However, that was seven years ago and the world is a very different place. A voice actor’s strike now could have major ramifications on the video game industry, especially as studios look to do work on their major Q2 (summer) releases for 2024. Additionally, a number of scandals in the video game industry this year involving the treatment of voice actors could add major fuel to the fire of a strike. This remains a developing story and we’ll have any updates when they emerge.

DisguisedToast Drops NACL-Winning League Of Legends Roster

DSG was the feel-good story of North American League of Legends this year. The team was brought in to supplement the second-tier NACL after a mass exodus from LCS teams. Furthermore, DSG was owned and operated by popular streamer DisguisedToast. The team was a collection of scene veterans and long-time academy players. Additionally, the team went on to steal the hearts of the community. As a cherry on top, the team went on to win the NACL Summer split.

However, just a month after that historic win, DSG is parting ways with that title-winning roster. “Today, we bid farewell to our NACL Championship League of Legends team. Since the start of the season, we wanted to make sure that our players would have the chance to prove their worth and value as some of the top players in the NA scene. With our win in the NACL, they have done exactly that. Our agreement with each of them was set so that after the season, they can all pursue LCS opportunities freely and without any kind of restrictions as LCS orgs look to revamp their roster for next year,” the team’s statement read in part.

DisguisedToast Explains Why He Released League Roster

Speaking with Dexerto, DisguisedToast revealed that dropping the roster was actually the best thing he could do for their careers. “As an NACL team, there is currently no pathway for any DSG players to work their way up to the LCS as long as they remain on the team. We would vouch for each of their work ethics and encourage all LCS teams to give them a trial,” he explained. A fair amount of movement is expected in the LCS this offseason. Hopefully, that will present an opportunity for these players.

However, DSG won’t be going away. “DSG will be staying in the NACL for 2024. Thank you to all the fans for their support as we continue our journey in the esports scene,” the team’s statement about the rosters moves concluded. Meanwhile, DisguisedToast recently said that he was open to the idea of moving DSG up to the LCS in the future. However, Toast has a stringent financial plan in mind. Furthermore, the viability of that move has left him wary about taking the leap.

Fans Roast 21 Savage “Call Of Duty” Character

After the success of Nicki Minaj’s implementation into Call of Duty, fans were hyped to see what Activision had done with 21 Savage. Savage was the last of the Hip-Hop 50 skins being added to the came, along with Snoop and Nicki. However, now that Savage is available, fans aren’t on board. “Why they got the man looking like 50 savage lol,” one person commented while another noted, “They made him buff!” Unlike Nicki’s impressive rendering, 21 Savage looks like a strange blend between himself and 50 Cent which was then run through a program to make it legally distinct.

However, not everyone was a hater. “Salute to all the Def Jam rappers who got taken advantage of back in the day using their name, image, and likeness in Def Jam Vendetta and never received the money due to them,” one fan wrote. “This new generation of artists like 21 Savage have their business in order.” The Hip-Hop 50 bundle is the latest pop culture addition to Call of Duty. Last month, the game introduced a bundle based on Prime Video’s The Boys. However, clearly, some aspects have been implemented than others.

Fans Pass On 21 Savage Skin

However, the criticism continued. “This how you know they know nothing bout hip hop. They playing deadprez while showcasing 21 savage,” one person argued. Furthermore, many people pointed out that the devs missed a golden opportunity to name the bundle’s melee weapon “Issa Knife”. Instead, the weapon is simply called the “Slaughter King”.

“The community will never get actual character skins we actually want.. like #johnwick or #tylerrake or something related to actual combat. Nobody wanted superheroes with super powers and assault rifles… or Godzilla and King Kong… WTF was that about?!?! 🙄🙄🙄,” one particularly commenter lamented. Meanwhile, many people simply said they were going to stick with the Nicki skin. While each bundle is only around $20, it was certainly a choice to stagger the releases. Regardless, it appears that this is more of a miss than anything else for the ever-popular military shooter. What do you think of the skin? Let us know below.
