DaBaby Unloads Quick-Fire Raps Over Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ For A New Remix And Fans Are Not Happy

Prior to a month ago, DaBaby had his eyes set on new music he planned to deliver to his fans. The rapper promised a new album was on the way, but all of that became an afterthought when he unleashed a homophobic rant targeted at individuals with HIV/AIDS during July’s Rolling Loud festival in Miami. Since then, DaBaby has found himself in a string of controversial moments and it continues with the release of his latest track.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina rapper delivers a remix of Wizkid and Tems’ summer hit, “Essence.” His take of the track completely alters the song’s original nature as Wizkid and Tems’ relaxed vocals are replaced by DaBaby’s quick-fire raps. He also uses the track to address the recent criticism he’s faced since his Rolling Loud rant. “I just feel like, you know, when situations like this present themselves, man,” he says on the track. “And people try to, you know, assassinate your character, man / And assassinate who you are, man / And everything you put that hard work in for, man.” He adds, “Sometimes you gotta demonstrate, you know, that’s how I came here / And I don’t mind demonstratin’ / I don’t mind exercisin’, you dig what I’m sayin’?”

The remix arrives after it was reported that DaBaby met with nine HIV/AIDS organizations after his Rolling Loud. As for the remix itself, most fans were not too happy with it and they took to Twitter to share their displeasures.

DaBaby Reportedly Met With Nine HIV/AIDS Organizations Following His Homophobic Rant

During his Rolling Loud festival set, DaBaby hopped on the mic and made some very distasteful and inaccurate comments about people living with HIV/AIDS. The homophobic rant caused the rapper to be dropped from several festival lineups and get called out by several celebrities for his offensive speech. Now, it seems as though DaBaby is taking some steps to educate himself about people living with HIV/AIDS.

According to a recent report from TMZ, the rapper has held meetings with nine HIV/AIDS non-profit organizations. A few of the organizations in attendance included Black AIDS Institute, GLAAD, Positive Women’s Network, and Transinclusive Group. GLAAD had previously issued a statement following DaBaby’s comments, calling them inaccurate, “hurtful, and harmful to the LGBTQ community and the estimated 1.2 million Americans living with HIV.”

During the meetings, DaBaby allegedly had the chance to hear from people whose lives are impacted by the condition and how they are able to live with the virus. Apparently, several of the organizations had reached out to DaBaby directly following his rant, attempting to “call him in instead of calling him out” by having a thoughtful conversation.

Per TMZ’s report, several of the organizations noted DaBaby was “genuinely engaged” during their meetings and open to learning more about HIV/AIDS. He reportedly apologized for his inaccurate and hurtful comments, allegedly acknowledging how it impacted Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

DaBaby Is No Longer Credited On Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitating’ On The Hot 100 Chart

“Levitating” has become one of Dua Lipa’s biggest hits, and that has been thanks in large part to the remix of the song that features DaBaby. Since he has been embroiled in controversy, though, the remix has started to lose its hold as the predominant version of the song (as opposed to the feature-less, Lipa-only version). In July, the remix started to get phased out of radio and prominent playlists. Earlier this month, the solo version of “Levitating” started to replace the remix on some Billboard charts.

Now, solo “Levitating” has replaced the remix on the chart: On this week’s Billboard Hot 100 dated September 4, “Levitating” sits at No. 6, and unlike last week, DaBaby is not credited on the song.

A similar thing happened in 2020 (although not based on similar motivations), when Nicki Minaj’s credit on Doja Cat’s “Say So” was removed from the charts. At the time, Billboard explained, “After two weeks of Minaj showing as a featured artist on ‘Say So’ on the Hot 100 and other charts that utilize the same methodology, only Doja Cat is now listed, as the original version, without Minaj, is now driving the majority of overall activity for the song; the change does not affect any of Minaj’s achievements on those charts the past two weeks, and she continues not to be credited on the song on any airplay charts, as the vast majority of the song’s airplay is still for the original version.”

Meanwhile, with 34 weeks in the top 10 of the Hot 100, “Levitating” is now the longest-running top-10 song by a female artist and the third longest-running ever, behind The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” (57 weeks) and Post Malone’s “Circles” (39).

Elsewhere on the chart, The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber’s “Stay” remains in the No. 1 spot for the fourth consecutive week.
