The Rundown After Another Contentious Day of Testimony at Trump’s Trial

Members of the Central Park Five are suing Donald Trump for “false and defamatory” statements about their 1989 case. Trump made the statements during last month’s presidential debate.

During the debate, Trump responded with “reckless disregard,” stating the members pleaded guilty to crimes associated with the beating and rape of a New York City woman. He also added the teens “badly hurt a person, killed a person.”

Legal docs filed by the Five’s attorney read, “Defendant Trump’s statements were false and defamatory in numerous respects. plaintiffs never pled guilty to the Central Park assaults. Plaintiffs all pled not guilty and maintained their innocence throughout their trial and incarceration, as well as after they were released from prison.”

Adding, “None of the victims of the Central Park assaults were killed.”

According to CNN, Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, dismissed the lawsuit as “another frivolous, Election interference lawsuit” set to “distract the American people from Kamala Harris’s dangerously liberal agenda and failing campaign.”

The men are pursuing compensatory and punitive damages, alleging that Trump’s remarks cast them in a false light and caused them to endure significant emotional distress.

Yusef Salaam of Exonerated Central Park Five Calls Trump Indictment ‘Karma’

Yusef Salaam calls Trump indictment karma

Former President Donald Trump’s recent 34-count indictment has stirred a range of public opinion with everyone from politicians to celebrities to ordinary people chiming in. However, Yusef Salaam, one of the exonerated “Central Park Five,” has a unique perspective on the situation, simply calling it “karma.”

Salaam tweeted the following after news of the indictment broke:

For those who may not remember, in 1989, Trump, who was then a prominent New York City businessman, took out several full-page newspaper advertisements calling for New York City politicians to reinstate the death penalty following the brutal rape and attack of a female jogger in New York City. Five youth, Salaam, Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana, and Kevin Richardson, were wrongfully imprisoned for 7-13 years until the attacker was caught. They had been coerced into giving false confessions and received substantial settlements. All are involved in criminal justice activism efforts now. Trump never formally apologized to the five, especially since he took out the ads before their trials began.

Salaam recently announced his candidacy for New York City Council.
