Ravyn Lenae Lets The Experimentation Run Free On “Bird’s Eye”

Ravyn Lenae is showing that she’s willing to take chances on her sophomore album Bird’s Eye. This is her follow-up to her 2022 debut HYPNOS, and one that’s been led by some pretty great promotional tracks. The 25-year-old hypnotist from Chicago got the rollout started back in early May with her “Love Me Not / Love Is Blind” twofer offering up starkly different takes on R&B. One would say that it was great indication that Ravyn was working on trying new sounds. Then, about a month later, she would return with first-time collaborator Ty Dolla $ign on “Dream Girl”, a slick and dreamy cut about allowing yourself to fall for someone.

Finally, we would get “One Wish” with Childish Gambino, arguably the best and easily the most vulnerable track on the record. Here, Ravyn wrestles with her complicated relationship with her father. “Called me on my birthday / I thought you’d be on your way, oh / Candles burned down to the cake / Still not seeing your faceI can’t forgеt you / And I can’t hate you / No matter how hard I try“. On top of these, there’s still an even more vast soundscape to be had across Bird’s Eye. The closing “Days” presents a country/acoustic vibe to wind down to on the summer nights. “Candy” delivers more a smooth and wavy reggae vibe. Furthermore, we get hints of some early 2000s late 90’s R&B on “From Scratch”, especially instrumentally. Ravyn’s beats, writing, and vocals make for a more than memorable listen in the R&B genre this year.

Ravyn Lenae’s Wistful ‘One Wish’ Video With Childish Gambino Is A Soulful Therapy Session

In the video for Ravyn Lenae‘s new song “One Wish,” the burgeoning R&B star finds parallels in the present and past as she reflects on her struggles to connect with the men in her life. Opening with a flashback to her father leaving her behind, the stylish video makes connections between this abandonment and her grown-up relationships, with a series of men who mirror his affinity for classic cars and flashy watches — and trouble communicating his feelings. Childish Gambino appears on track to voice the internal concerns of one man, showing how the problem cuts both ways.

Donald Glover recently released his final album as Childish Gambino, but the alter ego isn’t going away quietly. In addition to this feature with Ravyn Lenae, Gambino also appeared on Kaytranada’s new album, albeit on a song that the producer has been teasing during his DJ sets for years. Glover also reissued his unfinished 2020 album 3.15.20 as Atavista, adding two new features, Summer Walker and Young Nudy, along with remixed tracks.

“One Wish” appears on Lenae’s upcoming second album Bird’s Eye, which is out on August 9 via Atlantic. She already released three singles, “Love Is Blind,” “Love Me Not,” and “Dream Girl.” You can watch the “One Wish” video above.

Following an incredible debut album, Hypnos, in 2022, Ravyn Lenae is back, and better than ever. Tonight (May 3), the R&B hitmaker has announced her new album, Bird’s Eye, set for release this summer. Ahead of the album, Lena has shared two new songs — “Love Is Blind” and “Love Me Not.”

On “Love Is Blind,” Lenae reflects on a previous relationship. Though she feels some regret, she has taken away valuable lessons.

Meanwhile, “Love Me Not” features Lenae dreading the idea of depending on a lover. For this particular era, Lenae is stepping her artistry up a notch, as this particular song is accompanied by a video directed by Lenae herself. The video takes us through a day in Lenae’s life, as she can’t seem to get a guy off of her mind.

Bird’s Eye signifies returning to a place of self-trust and unbending intuition while acknowledging the paths and turns I’ve taken to get here,” Lenae said in a statement. “Revisiting the most basic parts of my identity has allowed me to fully embrace them and be proud of where I’m going.”

You can listen to “Love Is Blind” and see the video for “Love Me Not” above, and see the Bird’s Eye album artwork below.
