Rihanna’s “California King Bed” Was Written In Minutes, Muni Long Recalls

Rihanna’s 2010 Loud cut “California King Bed” remains a fan favorite even over a decade after its release, but according to Muni Long, it didn’t take long at all to write. During a recent interview with Complex, the songstress recalled cooking up the classic in a matter of minutes. According to her, she was in the midst of a major move when she hit the studio to work on the track and rushed through the writing process to get back to shopping for furniture online.

“I was in Miami at the time for ‘California King Bed,’ working out of We The Best studio, and I was actually working with Jermaine [Jackson] from The Runners,” she explained. “They had the chords and everything. I listened, I went back into the room, and they gave me the file.”

“I wrote the song in like 10 minutes. I was like, ‘Turn it up, let me get this done real quick,’ so I could go back to looking for my furniture,” she admitted. The Florida-born performer also revealed that the song was expected to go to another famous singer. She learned months later that RiRi claimed it. “Originally, they were trying to pitch it to Kelly Clarkson,” she shared. “Then I came back two months later, and my publisher Ryan Press said that they were going to cut it for Rihanna. I was super excited.”

While fans are certainly having a blast looking back on some of the Fenty Beauty founder’s biggest hits, they can’t help but hope for more music. Last month, West unveiled the intense cover art for “Carnival”, one of the standout tracks from Vultures 1. Designed by noted Canadian artist Jon Rafman, the cover art for “Carnival” depicts a close-up of a screaming and bloodied skinhead. Rafman also created the AI-generated music video for “Vultures (Havoc Version)” which was released alongside the album.

“Carnival” features Playboi Carti and Rich the Kid. As mentioned, it is widely considered one of the best tracks on Vultures 1. Many people have already called it the best song of 2024. However, the song proved controversial even before it was released. A version heard at a listening party in Chicago earned the ire of Ozzy Osbourne due to an uncleared sample of Black Sabbath. A later version at a Long Island listening party used a sample of Kanye’s “Hell of a life”, which interpolates the same Black Sabbath song.

She shared a clip of the moment, which shows her singing “The Night Is Still Young” for a few moments before Nicki snatched her microphone back because she forgot the lyrics.

According to Patrice, however, she didn’t forget the lyrics at all. In her TikTok, she explains that she’s not embarrassed or ashamed of the moment, because it was the rest of the crowd that threw her off. Fortunately, the fan didn’t let the unfortunate moment put a damper on her experience. “I had me a great time,” she says. “I was right there, front and center, okay? Nicki was disappointed, but listen, I’m sorry Nicki but I was just singing the song.”

This isn’t the first time a performer confiscated a microphone after a fan forgot their lyrics, however. In November, something similar happened at a Tamar Braxton concert, though the fan insists they were simply trying to record the moment. The New England Patriots continue to clean house as ESPN reports the team intends to trade embattled quarterback Mac Jones. Pending a physical, Jones will head to the Jaguars for a sixth-round pick. In Jacksonville, he will compete to be the primary backup for fellow 2021 first-round pick Trevor Lawrence. The trade, which cannot be finalized until the new NFL year starts on Wednesday, ends a tumultuous three years in Foxboro for Jones. Despite making waves late in his college career at Alabama, many experts were surprised to see the Patriots take him 15th overall in 2021.

Jones threw for nearly 4000 yards in his rookie year before drastically declining. He failed to surpass 3000 yards in his sophomore season and was benched for Bailey Zappe after 11 games of the 2023 season. While Jones’ development was undoubtedly affected by the departure of Josh McDaniels, he also suffered from the Alabama Curse. Teams continue to seemingly overvalue Crimson Tide QBs, often putting undue pressure on players at the NFL level. The Patriots are expected to take a quarterback with the third-overall pick in this year’s draft.

Saints Extend Tyrann Mathieu

Trade: Patriots are finalizing a deal to send QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, sources tell ESPN. The trade cannot be processed until the new league year begins Wednesday and he passes a physical. The two sides were discussing a 6th-round pick, per sources.

Elsewhere, the New Orleans Saints have extended Tyrann Mathieu, giving Honey Badger two more years in the Big Easy. The contract, as mentioned, is for two years and totals $13M. In 2023, Mathieu had 75 tackles (50 solo) and four interceptions. This put him joint-fifth in tackles and joint-first in interceptions on a team that finished 9-8 on the season but missed out on the playoffs due to tiebreakers. The Saints are facing the daunting task of navigating an offseason that sees them nearly $69M over the salary cap despite the historic increase of $30.6M.

Mathieu enters his third season with the Saints. He began his career in 2013 as a third-round pick for the Cardinals. However, he left Arizona for Houston in 2018 before joining Kansas City a year later. He was a major contributor to the start of the Patrick Mahomes dynasty before leaving for New Orleans in 2022. Mathieu has 775 tackles and 33 interceptions for 501 yards and 4 touchdowns across his decade-plus in the league.
