Breonna Taylor’s Mother, Tamika Palmer, Reflects On Daughter’s Death, One Year Later

Breonna Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, spoke with CNN, Saturday, on the one-year anniversary of her daughter’s tragic death at the hands of the Louisville Police Department. Taylor described the situation as “crazy” and “still unbelievable” to her.

“It can’t end here,” Palmer told CNN. “I’m still out here, I’m still doing what I need to do to get justice for Breonna to make sure that people do right by her.”

One way Palmer is seeking justice for her daughter is through the Breonna Taylor Foundation, which aims to support economic, social, and racial justice through police reform and government accountability. Megan Thee Stallion announced she would be partnering with Fashion Nova to donate $100,000 to the foundation, Saturday.

Palmer also discussed Taylor in an interview with NBC, earlier this week.

“Just to know who Breonna was — she didn’t deserve that,” she said at the time. “And so I’ve always felt like I’ve had one job: It was to protect my kids. And so, how do you not continue to fight?”

Attorney Ben Crump also released a statement on Saturday: “1 year ago, Breonna Taylor was tragically killed in her own home, igniting a movement for racial justice and necessary change, which has prompted many cities and states to BAN no-knock warrants. 365 days have passed but the fight for justice for Breonna Taylor continues!!”

Chargers Release Veteran Pro-Bowl CB Casey Hayward

The Los Angeles Chargers have released Pro-Bowl cornerback Casey Hayward, saving themselves $9.75 million in cap space. The veteran cornerback joined the Chargers back in 2016, but at 31-years-old, the team feels it’s time to move on.

“When we signed Casey during free agency back in 2016, we felt that we were adding a starting-caliber corner who still had a considerable amount of unrealized potential,” general manager Tom Telesco said in a statement. “Not only did Casey realize that potential in the years that followed, he exceeded our high expectations and became a prominent leader for our team both on and off the field.”

With the Chargers, Hayward was named to two Pro-Bowl teams, two All-Pro teams and was nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2017. He was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.

Hayward reacted to the news on social media by recalling his highlights with the organization. He added, “Wish we could’ve done more…”

“While the decision to add Casey to the team was obviously one of the best free-agent signings we have ever made, this roster-related decision is one of the most difficult,” Telesco continued. “At the end of the day, however, this decision does not diminish what Casey has meant to the Chargers organization nor our gratitude for his time here. Casey is the consummate professional and a shining example for everyone who aspires to play in the NFL.”

Duke Still Preparing For NCAA Tournament Bid, Despite COVID-19 Scare: Report

Duke’s 2020-21 men’s basketball season might not be over after all, after new reports suggest the team could still participate in the NCAA tournament as an at-large bid or as a COVID-19 replacement team. Earlier this week, Duke withdrew from the ACC tournament after someone within the organization tested positive for the coronavirus.

The school’s athletic director, Kevin White, originally stated that this would be the end of the team’s season; however, ESPN’s Rece Davis reports that this has changed and that they are currently preparing for a potential tournament selection.

At the time of the announcement, head coach Mike Krzyzewski released a statement that echoed White’s stance:

While our season was different than any other that I can remember, I loved the 2020-21 Duke Basketball team and was honored to be their coach. We have not asked more of any team in our history, and they deserve enormous credit for handling everything like the outstanding young men they are. I feel deeply for our players, who have done a terrific job all season in taking care of each other and the team. I am extremely proud of their collective attitudes and effort, which could not have been stronger. We are disappointed we cannot keep fighting together as a group after two outstanding days in Greensboro. This season was a challenge for every team across the country and as we have seen over and over, this global pandemic is very cruel and is not yet over. As many safeguards as we implemented, no one is immune to this terrible virus.

2021 NCAA Selection Sunday is scheduled to take place on March 14th.

Cardi B Shouts Out Lesser Known Black Artists For Their Grammy Nominations

With the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards airing Sunday night, Cardi B took a moment to celebrate underappreciated Black artists who were nominated for awards with a lengthy statement on Twitter. Cardi’s comments come after The Weeknd revealed that he will no longer be submitting his music for consideration, labeling the Awards as “corrupt.”

Cardi admits it can be frustrating to feel your music is being overlooked for consideration, and that recognition from the Grammys can feel great:

It’s frustrating sometimes to work and work on your craft and you feel overlooked because you might not look like others ,are not mixxy so you not always around other artists, you rap or sing about different material, you stay out of drama and the media or yet still not as popular however you’re talented ass fuck and one day you wake up and you find out youre nominated and got a notice from one of the biggest award shows purely cause of your TALENT!

In her statement, she specifically shouts out Freddie Gibbs, Giveon, Brittany Howard, Ant Clemons, Ledisi, Luke James, Thundercat, Chika, Jean and Marcus Baylor, and more for being nominated, despite not receiving sufficient attention from blogs, magazines, or other award shows.

She continues:

Soo besides all the bullshit let’s not forget to congratulate these artists. This is their moment too and they been working their ass off with no exposure and let’s not overshadow it with feelings cause your favorite might not be on the list. Congrats guys and good luck on the Grammys. You deserve it.

The Grammys are set to air at 8:00 PM EST, Sunday.
