J Dilla’s Younger Brother Illa J Unveils “No Traffic” Visual

J Dilla’s Younger Brother Illa J Unveils “No Traffic” Visual

With today being Hip-Hop’s 50th birthday, it’s only right we continue to pay homage to the greats.

Insert Illa J, who is best known in the music industry as J Dilla’s younger brother. J Dilla’s vast influence on the rap game will forever be remembered, and Illa J is here to carry on his brother’s legacy. To date, Illa J boasts over 100 million global music streams independently, as he travels the world selling out shows.

Now, Illa J returns with his newest single and visual for “No Traffic,” holding fans over until the release of his forthcoming studio album titled No Traffic, arriving September 1st.

What inspired “No Traffic”?

Most of the album, No Traffic, was already finished, but I didn’t have an intro yet. I really wanted to set the tone of the new project with some hype energy. The first thing that came to mind was making an instrumental and have Dank (of Frank N Dank) talk over it, so he sent me about two minutes of raw vocals of him just talking. The only direction I gave him was to mention the title of the album, No Traffic. I made a new beat and then had my engineer drag his vocals on top of it. We then moved around his vocals and chopped them to how I wanted it to fit. Once I heard it all put together, I liked it so much that I had to rap on it. Iit ended up being a single.”

What was your creative vision with the music video?

Originally we planned on doing a lyric video for the single “No Traffic.” But my wife, Sarah Samira Yancey who directed, shot and edited the video, decided to make it a hybrid by having me act out the lyrics to make it more personal. The vision of this video was to show me in a more authentic light. Not too serious, that’s not me. I’m silly and I have fun listening to my music and the lyrics are added in a way where they become a part of the video rather than just “subtitles.”

What do you want fans to take away from the song/visual?

I’m excited to show people another side of me, apart from just being the younger brother of a Hip-Hop legend. I love my brother’s production, but that’s his style of making music. I have my own sound and way of producing that I’m proud of. “No Traffic” represents that lane that I created for myself to follow my own musical path. It’s freeing to finally release my own production… I’m just getting started all over again, and the visuals support that newfound confidence and freedom.

Bobbi Althoff Shares How She Secured Her Viral Drake Interview

During a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, comedian Bobbi Althoff revealed how she was able to secure her famous interview with Drake. The interview blew up immediately after its release a few weeks back, raking in over 10 million views since. The 26-year-old’s podcast, The Really Good Podcast, had only been around since April of this year, but Drake’s episode catapulted her to fame.

She’s since gone on to post interviews with Lil Yachty and Mark Cuban, and is even scheduled to sit down with Tyga next. Althoff’s deadpan humor and aloof attitude make for some of the funniest videos yet. After all, who doesn’t want to see their favorite artists in an incredibly awkward situation. With that being said, Althoff has sparked some debate as to how she managed to land a performer as huge as Drake when she was just starting out. Rumors have been circulating that she’s an industry plant, however, she denies this. According to Althoff, she simply slid into his DMs.

Bobbi Althoff “Decided To Just Go For It”

In June, Althoff interviewed Funny Marco. Apparently, Drake was a fan of what he saw, liking clips of the interview and eventually following Althoff on Instagram. After discovering that Drake was into her content, she decided to take a chance and ask him if he wanted to be interviewed. “I decided to just go for it and shoot my shot. I DMed Drake and asked if he wanted to be on my podcast, and he said yes,” she explained. “He sent me his touring schedule, and I knew that I needed to make it happen fast, so my friend and I flew to Memphis two days after the original DM was sent to record the episode.”

Elsewhere in her Cosmopolitan interview, Althoff revealed how she prepares to sit down with all these celebs. “There’s no prep,” she explained, “and that’s the fun of it.” She continued, “I think that’s why celebrities are down to do it. They know it’s a character, and we just wing it. It’s not a real interview. I’m not trying to get hard-hitting information about you — I’m not trying to uncover anything. It’s just a conversation. It’s really a parody of a good interview.

Jay-Z & Kanye West’s “Watch The Throne” Turns 12

Watch The Throne celebrated its 12th anniversary on August 8. The collaborative album between rap titans Jay-Z and Kanye West was a spectacle in every sense of the word. Naturally, the duo went on a tour to promote the album with a presentation that matched their massive presence in the rap world. Even the CD for the album was noteworthy, being a collaboration between Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci and Virgil Abloh.

Behind-the-scenes videos of Jay and Ye showed them working on the album in foreign locations, adding to its prestige. The music contained several legendary collaborators ranging from Beyoncé to Frank Ocean and Kanye-affiliated multi-instrumentalist producer Mike Dean. The album is a time capsule of the year it was released due to Kanye and Jay’s closeness, their place and influence in the culture overall, and the power of the music itself.

The Power Of Collaboration

Watch The Throne showcased what could happen when two giants in the rap game came together. Before the album’s release, fans were used to rapper and producer collab projects. However, this album was something completely different. Kanye already built a reputation for bringing people together for his songs, working with iconic rappers, singers, and producers to create legendary and unique tracks.

Kanye handled some of the production for this album and was joined by legendary producers Hit-Boy, The Neptunes, 88 Keys, RZA, Q-Tip, Swizz Beatz, and Mike Dean. Listeners were excited to have so many producers with contrasting sounds coming together. Meanwhile, Watch The Throne’s first single was “H•A•M,” but the second single, “Otis,” is cemented in rap history. Another massive single from the album was “N*ggas In Paris,” which has two soundbites from Will Ferrell from the movie Blades of Glory. These segments became classic moments and are still referenced to this day. The song also spawned the still-referenced meme “Who was in Paris?”

The Luxury Of Watch The Throne

The fact the album Watch The Throne exists in the first place is almost a flex. Multiple recording sessions were held in luxury rooms in New York’s Mercer Hotel and Tribeca Grand Hotel. Other locations included Hawaii, Australia, and of course, Paris. Many of the samples within the music are creative and obscure. Riccardo Tisci, the creative director of Givenchy, designed the album’s cover and enclosed artwork. Virgil Abloh also had a hand in the process, whose brand OFF-WHITE was quite popular then and has only increased since his passing. The album’s deluxe CD cover was textured, shined, and had a fold-out component that showcased more artwork. This showed the rap world the importance of physical media and the power of executing it creatively. The luxury was reflected sonically and physically.

Jay & Ye’s Relationship

Watch The Throne was the album that doubled down on the friendship between Kanye and Jay-Z. Many were well aware of the brotherhood between the duo. They worked together on a plethora of music across the years. However, the process of this album’s creation found them butting heads. They disagreed on the direction the album should go, and Jay wanted some songs for his then-upcoming solo album, Magna Carta Holy Grail. Further, Jay-Z was recently featured on “Jail” from Kanye’s album Donda. This feature was truly the most impactful because it came after the duo seemingly had a fallout to end all fallouts. However, it was short-lived, as Kanye’s most recent behavior distanced him from almost all his previous connections.

Laying The Groundwork

The collaborative project paved the way for many rap records that came in later years. Drake has recently released several joint projects, including those with 21 Savage and Future. Travis Scott and Quavo’s is an often overlooked collaboration for their discographies. Future and Juice WRLD’s found the latter making a project with one of his idols. Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka’s collab serves as a time capsule of the Atlanta rap scene. Meanwhile, Lil Baby and Gunna’s project is a time capsule of where it is now. Each of these projects capitalized on overlapping fanbases and showed where their chemistry level truly was. However, none of these projects had quite the impact of Watch The Throne globally.

The Success Of Watch

Watch The Throne’s commercial performance is a testament to the power of the collaboration of the artists. The album went No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in its first week. Additionally, it broke the US iTunes Store’s one-week sales record. It stayed in the Top 5 on Billboard for four weeks, selling upward of 80,000 copies weekly. The album has sold over 1.5 million copies and has gone quintuple Platinum.

Additionally, it found similar success out of the US, charting No. 1 in several countries. The music videos for the album have amassed millions of views, with the one for “Otis” being heavily discussed. Many people have celebrated the album’s creation and showcase of skill from two closely associated artists. Its power is still discussed by listeners today, 12 years after its release.

“Barbie” Movie Banned in Kuwait due to LGBTQ+ Content, Faces Censorship Throughout the Middle East

Barbie Movie Banned in Kuwait due to LGBTQ+ Content, Faces Censorship Throughout the Middle East

Of all the places that Barbie will partying in this summer, Kuwait will not be one of them. The country has officially banned the “Barbie” movie from playing in theaters in the country due to LGBTQ+ content, which is against the country’s traditional Muslim values.

This week, the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), published an official statement from the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information for Press, Publishing, and Publications Affairs, which read that “(the committee) has banned the films (Barbie) and (Talk to Me) from showing,” stating that the intent of the ban was to “prevent anything that offends public morals or incites violations of public order, customs and traditions, and calls for ideas alien to society.”

Chairman of the Film Censorship Committee, LafiAl-Subaie, stated that the committee, before making its decision to authorize the showing of the film, “required the deletion of some obscene scenes, but if it carries ideas that encourage unacceptable behavior and a message that distorts the prevailing values of society, then a decision is taken to ban it completely,” explaining that “this applies to any film that includes a different vision of values.” It contradicts the vision of our society and our customs.”

The ban on the film “Talk to Me” is not due to LGBTQ+ content, but due to the presence of trans nonbinary actor Zoe Terakes, who has a major role in the film.

A censored version of the film, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide so far, was shown in several other Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. It is facing a possible ban in Lebanon as there has been a recent surge in anti-homosexual rhetoric amongst some of the country’s politically influential groups.

In 2019, Nicki Minaj (whose song “Barbie World” appears on the “Barbie” soundtrack) pulled out of a concert in Saudi Arabia in protest of the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

Islam, which prohibits homosexuality, is the official religion of Kuwait. Islam and the Islamic Sharia (Islamic law) are the main sources of the Kuwaiti Laws and Legislations. According to The Guardian, Kuwait is considered to be the most censorious film market in the Gulf, routinely banning movies featuring any references to LBGTQ+ people, including “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Lightyear,” and “West Side Story.”

O.J. Simpson Blasts Henry Ruggs’ Prison Sentence

O.J. Simpson Blasts Henry Ruggs' Prison Sentence

O.J. Simpson is no stranger to Las Vegas courtrooms and earlier today, he weighed in on the Henry Ruggs’ ruling, saying “the math is not adding up to me,” insinuating that Ruggs got a far lighter sentence for a more serious crime.

Simpson took to X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) to share his thoughts, even addressing the platform by its new name, starting out by saying, “Hey X world, it’s me, yours truly,” before quantifying that he went to college on a football scholarship (possibly alluding to the fact that he was not expected to be a mathematical genius), but stating that “somehow this math is not adding up to me.”

He reviewed Ruggs’ case stating: “You’re driving a car at roughly 160 mph on a public street, killing a girl and her dog and get roughly three to ten years” before comparing his own, stating, “You go to a hotel room that you’re invited to to retrieve your own personal stolen property- property I now have because it was ruled to be mine by the state of California, and you get nine to 33 years? Same courthouse, same city, same state….I don’t know…somehow it does not add up to me.”

For reference, Simpson was referring to his 2008 conviction in which he was sentenced in connection to an armed robbery in Las Vegas. He was originally sentenced to 33 years with the possibility of parole after 9 years. (Simpson was paroled in 2017).

Ruggs received a 3 to 10 year sentence for the death of Tina Turner after pleading guilty to a felony DUI. Ruggs’ blood alcohol level (BAC) was .16 at the time of the crash- twice the legal limit.

As would be expected, many X users had thought to share with “the Juice,” making reference to his 1995 acquittal for the murder charges of his ex-wife Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

Angus Cloud As Fez: 7 Best “Euphoria” Moments

On July 31, Euphoria actor Angus Cloud passed away at 25. Cloud rose to fame on the HBO series, playing a character named Fezco. Fez was many viewers’ favorite character due to his relaxed attitude – a large contrast to the rest of the drama on the show. Cloud’s career took off after gaining his role on Euphoria through almost pure happenstance. He landed a role in a movie called North Hollywood, had been cast in some yet-to-be-released projects, and also appeared in several music videos. On the day of his passing, his co-stars and those who knew him shared tribute posts, celebrating his kind and genuine personality. To celebrate his career, we gathered seven of his character’s best moments on Euphoria.

7. Season 2, Episode 5: “Stand Still Like The Hummingbird”

This is a brief scene from Angus Cloud’s character on Euphoria, but it’s still an impactful one. In this episode, Zendaya’s character Rue goes to a variety of places in an attempt to escape going to rehab. One of the places she visits is Fezco’s house. Fez tells her he can’t sell her anything because he doesn’t keep anything in the house anymore. He allows her to use his bathroom and offers any assistance he can. Rue searches the house anyway and goes through the medications Fez’s grandmother is on. Her desperation saddens Fez, and her shoving him only makes him even more upset and disappointed. His ability to remove her from the house forcefully but without harm shows his care for her while also doing what needed to be done in the situation.

6. Season 1, Episode 2: “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy”

Angus Cloud does not have a lot of dialogue in this scene of Euphoria, but that’s what makes it so powerful. Zendaya’s character, Rue, visits Fezco and while she is visiting, his associate Mouse comes over. Mouse is there to distribute to Fez but takes an interest in Rue. Fez says Rue is like a sister to him which causes Mouse to treat her in a predatory way. Fez tries to keep the situation as calm as possible as a gun is hidden beside him on the couch. Mouse coaxes Rue to try fentanyl, and she does in hopes he will leave her alone. Fez tells him he doesn’t want Rue to try it, but Mouse ignores him and then forces him to pay for it. Fez remains calm throughout all of this. It’s a moment where his subtle acting adds to the scene’s intensity.

5. Season 2, Episode 3: “Ruminations: Big & Little Bullys”

For many people, this scene from Euphoria with Fez is their favorite due to the creative blend of situational and even physical comedy and irony. Cal, Nate’s Dad, discovers where Fezco lives and parks in front of his house. Ashtray greets him, Fez’s much younger brother, who is holding a shotgun. Cal ends up restrained in a chair and they confront him about why he’s bothering them. Ashtray hits him with the stock of the shotgun multiple times as a result of frustration. Cal thinks Fez has something of his and makes some confessions. Fez shares he genuinely has no idea what Cal is talking about, and their mutual confusion is where the comedy comes in. Fez’s friend Faye reacts to everything in the background, and her commentary adds to the scene’s comedy.

4. Season 1, Episode 7: “The Trials & Tribulations Of Trying To Pee While Depressed”

This scene from Euphoria is a setup for something else that happens with Cloud’s character in our list. Fezco, who works at the gas station, speaks to Nate directly about other events on the show. Nate, as his character often does, tries to take control of the situation and establish dominance. Fez is unphased and reiterates his point by directly saying he will kill Nate if he continues what he’s doing with the other characters. Many viewers praised Fez’s ability to maintain control of the situation while remaining calm and not stooping to Nate’s level. There’s also a small dose of situational comedy and irony, with Fez telling Nate the total for his purchase directly after saying he will kill him.

3. Season 2, Episode 8: “All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned For A Thing I Cannot Name”

Among the chaos of Euphoria, Fezco was given several wholesome scenes. Many, if not all of them, included the character Lexi. Viewers of the show celebrated these scenes for how intimate and drama free they were. In this scene, the two of them simply have a wholesome conversation about their future plans, interests in life, and how they view human connections. The scene is creatively edited to show them talking over the course of several days. Their outfits and activities change, but they remain talking on the phone together. This shows how the two bonded over time and were able to connect despite all the chaos around them. It’s a moment where Fez’s character exists far outside of the drug dealer persona as we see who he is as a person – specifically, a person with a heart.

2. Season 2, Episode 6: “A Thousand Little Trees Of Blood”

angus cloud euphoria
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – JANUARY 05: Angus Cloud attends HBO’s “Euphoria” Season 2 Photo Call at Goya Studios on January 05, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic for HBO)

Euphoria is a show where other media is sometimes mentioned, and Angus Cloud’s Fezco is one of the characters who do this most. Moments like this help the show feel like it truly is happening in the real world despite the artistic cinematography and Rue’s presence as an unreliable omniscient narrator. In this scene, the two characters bond over the movie Stand By Me, which Fez shares is one of his favorites. Hearing this was surprising to not only Lexi, but viewers of the show, too, considering Fez’s background. They watch the movie and sing the title song from it together. They also hold hands briefly during this moment. Fez says that the song “goes hard” is a moment that shows how he and Lexi have a connection that separates them from all the other characters.

1. Season 2, Episode 1: “Trying To Get To Heaven Before They Close The Door”

This is many viewers’ favorite moment from Fez on Euphoria. It’s also the payoff and follow-up to another scene on our list. While no “perfect” characters exist in Euphoria, some are worse than others. Seeing these characters get what’s coming to them was satisfying for many viewers. With this scene being in the Season 2 premiere, viewers got something they had wanted for a long time right out of the gate. Party scenes on Euphoria often have pivotal moments, and this was one of the biggest ones. Fez physically confronts Nate, who, again, is many viewers’ most hated character. Fez hits him in the head with a bottle and punches him multiple times. Viewers felt this was what Nate’s character deserved considering all the harm he had done to other characters on the show.

What were some of your favorite moments with Fezco on Euphoria? Let us know in the comments section.

On this date in 2000, Big L’s posthumous album The Big Picture was released on Rawkus Records. The LP was originally slated as the late Lamont Coleman’s debut album, but L was tragically murdered in Harlem while the album was in production.

The album was produced by DJ Premier, Ron Browz, Ron G, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, Shomari, Mike Heron, Ysae, and Showbiz and features appearances from Fat Joe, Guru, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane and the late Tupac Shakur.

Big L is regarded as one of the games best emcees that never got their chance in the spotlight, however, because of his ability to foresee great talent, he was the one who introduced Jay-Z as a force in 90s era crime rhyme, which dominated NYC Hip Hop via the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show in 89.9 FM in 1995.

Big up to the Rawkus team, the entire DITC and Big L himself for this eternal Hip Hop classic!

[WATCH] Rapper MC Shan Responds To Backlash Over Nas Statements

Screen Shot 2023 07 28 at 7.56.17 AM

Queens rapper MC Shan isn’t happy that fellow MC Nas left him out of the upcoming 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop show. He took to Instagram to air some grievances with Nas over his lack of inclusion and social media responded by attacking the veteran MC. Produced by Nas’ Mass Appeal, a Hip-Hop 50 Live show will be held at Yankee Stadium on August 11, with performers including Snoop Dogg, T.I., Fat Joe, Eve, Lil Kim, Trina, Common, Slick Rick and more.

While Hip Hop 50 Live will also include pioneers for a Pillar of Hip-Hop set – like Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, Roxanne Shanté and others—Shan feels he should have been included.

It all began when MC Shan posted a video advising Nas not to mention his game again.

“I’m sitting here hearing that Nas is doing these muthaf*ckin’ 50th anniversary shows, right? Nas, if you doing 50th anniversary shows and you ain’t holla at ya mans, let me tell you something, my n*gga, don’t never mention my muthaf*ckin’ name again. Don’t put my name in ya mouth about nothing, n*gga,” he says in the scathing video. Shan pointed out what he sees as hypocrisy by people reaching out to praise him, but not following it up. “But I’m looking at it like this, n*gga: if you gettin’ n*ggas money on the 50th of Hip Hop, and you glorify me and say, ‘Yo, Shan this,’ and you ain’t call me and say, ‘Yo, Shan, I see what you doing, n*gga.’ “I done did a show with you muthaf*cka, but if you ain’t call me and that whole roster is full, n-gga, don’t never mention my mothaf*ckin’ name.”

Now Shan is clearing up any notions of him wanting anything from Nas he added that bloggers twisted his words.

See the video below.
