Lil Wayne’s “Tha Fix Before Tha VI” Mixtape Review

Lil Wayne has been active throughout this year. He toured North America, performed at the ESPY Awards, and featured on Nas’s latest album. Now Wayne is officially beginning the rollout for Tha Carter VI. Just in time for the fifth anniversary of Tha Carter V, he released Tha Fix Before Tha VI. His first official project since 2020, Lil Wayne’s ten-track commercial mixtape, is a precursor to his upcoming 14th studio album. The Young Money label boss is known for dropping preludes to his albums, including his Sorry 4 The Wait series, I Am Not A Human Being, and the Free Weezy Album. Lil Wayne’s latest release feeds his loyal fanbase with an appetizer, allowing their hunger to grow for the main course. Now that the project is finally out, it can be said that Tha Fix Before Tha VI builds more worry than anticipation.

Lil Wayne Plays To Both His Strengths & Weaknesses

On his latest mixtape, Lil Wayne highlights both his acclaimed skill set and the least palatable qualities of his music. He opens Tha Fix Before Tha VI with the Jon Batiste-assisted “Act Up.” Wayne’s signature lighter flick leads to an exciting mix of flows accentuated by the continuously building instrumental. His use of autotune brings out the emotion in his delivery, making for an attention-grabbing introduction. Wayne rides the song’s momentum with “Birds,” which is uniquely catchy. It features a bizarre, bird-sampling instrumental over which he sounds good, although the beat does get tiresome. His verses contain exciting flows, providing a catchy melody on the song’s chorus.

The song “Slip” is a prime example of how an abysmal hook can diminish Lil Wayne’s creative bars. He starts the track with some of his best rhyming on the entire project over a luscious instrumental. His second verse is also phenomenal as he spits punchlines like, “He’s a p*ssy, he can’t do a thing, now that’s just menopause.” Unfortunately, the chorus takes away from the verses as Lil Wayne nasally repeats, “Y’all n****s like extra skin on my d*ck.” The previously-released single, “Kat Food,” nods to Missy Elliott in its odd instrumental that Wayne effortlessly floats over.

Tha Fix Before Tha VI takes an interesting turn with “Tuxedo,” a rap-rock fusion that recalls his 2010 album, Rebirth. Wayne is joined by Young Money signee Euro and boasts about getting a pardon from President Trump. He raps, “I just called my n**** Donald Trump and that was that.” While the beat and overall style of the song are not fitting for Euro nor Wayne, both rappers sound comfortable over the instrumental.

Much Is To Be Desired

While there are promising moments on Tha Fix Before Tha VI, many are undermined by an off-putting chorus, instrumental, or lyric. The song “No New B*tches” may include effective rhyme schemes, but the track is filled with repetitive raps about sex over a cluttered beat. It is reminiscent of the overwhelmingly sexual lyricism that plagued 2013’s I Am Not A Human Being II. The song “Tity Boi” is pretty self-explanatory, featuring the same tiresome sex raps, although Lil Wayne rhymes well over the layered production. Again, the rapping is hindered by a poorly constructed chorus that becomes an obnoxiously repetitive Jersey Club track. With a title like “Tity Boi,” the content is to be expected, but Wayne has rapped about sex in significantly more creative ways before.

Tha Fix Before Tha VI has its bland moments, but it finishes strong with “Good Morning.” On this track, Lil Wayne comes to life over a triumphant instrumental. Unfortunately, it is too short, but it was made simply as a theme song for FS1’s Undisputed. The track would have made for a more exciting intro, but it closes the project on a positive note.

Ultimately, Lil Wayne’s latest commercial mixtape does leave much to be desired. However, it has been prefaced that the next installment of Tha Carter series is on the way. Nothing on this mixtape is as nearly as impressive as his Swizz Beatz-produced “Kant Nobody” single that arrived earlier this year. Wayne is clearly a gifted rapper, but his songwriting is still inconsistent and the project is tainted by lazy choruses and poor production selection. Let’s hope that Lil Wayne is saving his best material for Tha Carter VI.

Lil Wayne Announces New Project Dropping Before “Tha Carter VI”

Lil Wayne has a new project arriving ahead of the release of Tha Carter VI that is aptly titled, Tha Fix Before Tha VI. Wayne shared a pre-save link to the project in both his Twitter and Instagram bios on Wednesday. Cover art for the effort resembles that of 2011’s Sorry 4 The Wait mixtape, with a red hue engulfing the image.

While he’s added the pre-save link to his bios and even updated his cover photo on Twitter to feature the artwork, Wayne has yet to comment officially on the release. It’s unclear exactly when he plans to drop the effort. On the pre-save website, he simply notes that the project is “coming soon.”

Tha Fix Before Tha VI will be Wayne’s first solo project since his 2020 mixtape No Ceilings 3. He dropped the last installment in Tha Carter series back in 2018. He first teased the start of work on the upcoming album during a Young Money reunion at Drake’s October World Weekend festival in Toronto in August 2022.

In addition to both Tha Carter VI and Tha Fix Before Tha VI, Wayne reportedly has another album on the way by the end of 2023. During a recent interview with BET, 2 Chainz confirmed that he and Wayne are finishing up a collaborative project. “I’m about to drop a project with Lil Wayne and have tryouts for my G League team, another anniversary for a restaurant I’ve been owning for eight years, so I’m not surprised,” 2 Chainz said of his upcoming plans. Of the collaboration, he added: “I consider Wayne my brother and love working with him. The album is expected to drop before the year ends, and Amazon Music will support the project.” Pre-save Lil Wayne’s upcoming Tha Fix Before Tha VI here.

Lil Wayne Says He Prefers Creativity Over Competition In Rap

Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter VI is creeping closer and closer. Although it has yet to be given a tracklist or release date, Wayne’s latest moves suggest it could arrive any day now. Simultaneously with the release of his lead promotional single “Kant Nobody” on Feb. 23, Wayne sat down with Zane Lowe for a chat. On the latest Apple 1 Radio episode of the Zane Lowe Show, Wayne and Zane discussed a multitude of topics. Aside from the obvious Carter VI chatter and his latest single, Wayne divulged about his current creative process. Sounding content, Wayne spoke about how he is not trying to compete with other rappers when making songs.

“This is creativity,” he said. “No one gets behind a mic, approaches a song, and says ‘I’m making a song so it can be better than this one.’ If we all approached it that way, yeah it’d be a competition. This is creativity. Any individual who creates, this is their individuality. They’re putting their growth and creativity out there for you to enjoy. But we also know this is what the world does, so we have no problem with it.” With this sentiment, it’s clear that Wayne knows fans will pin artists against each other. But, with the storied career he has, that surely does not bother him.

Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter VI” Updates

The approach to songwriting that Wayne described likely pertains to his process of making Tha Carter VI. After teasing the album first in 2020, we did not hear of it again until last August. After the Young Money Reunion Show with Drake and Nicki Minaj, Wayne shared the pre-save link for the album on social media. Not much happened following this, though, except for a tour announcement. Kicking off in April and ending in May, the “Welcome To Tha Carter Tour” would predictably come after an LP release, so fans can hear their favorite album tracks live.

When speaking specifically about the project with Zane Lowe, Wayne talked to fans about what they can expect quality-wise and the incredible journey it took to get to this point. “Everybody already know… you already know… come on… it’s Carter VI,” he said. “I never even imagined. That didn’t even sound right years ago. I can’t believe we’re at Carter VI. My fans know I give my all. Go listen to my last feature and know it’s gonna be a thousand times better than that.” Some of Wayne’s recent features include verses on “GOD DID” by DJ Khaled and “Just In Time” by JID, both of which stunned. So, if his album contains output better than this, we are in for an incredible project.

Lil Wayne Kicks Off “Tha Carter VI” Campaign With “Kant Nobody” Ft. DMX & Swizz Beatz

Lil Wayne’s new album appears to be on the way. The rapper dropped off his last studio album, Funeral in 2020, followed by the third installment in the No Ceilings mixtape series. However, it’s the forthcoming volume in Tha Carter that fans have awaited. Considering the storied history behind Tha Carter V’s release, it felt like a relief just to see the album out, even if it didn’t show Wayne at his finest hour. Nonetheless, the rapper emerged with a body of work that fans cherished.

Last year, the rapper confirmed that Tha Carter VI would arrive soon. Lil Wayne announced the project as he shared the stage with his protegées Drake and Nicki Minaj at OVO Fest last summer. Just a few days later, he ramped up the anticipation once he revealed that a pre-save link was available. Though he didn’t provide much of an update afterward, he announced his upcoming Welcome To Tha Carter tour, which is set to kick off this April. So, it seems like his next album could drop sometime soon.

Lil Wayne Samples DMX On “Kant Nobody”

Shortly after Vibe and Billboard unveiled the top 10 of their Top 50 Greatest Rappers list, which ranked Lil Wayne at #7, the rapper seemingly addressed the publications in an Instagram post where he teased a new collaboration with Swizz Beatz and DMX. Today, he unveiled his latest single “Kant Nobody” featuring the late DMX and produced by Swizz Beatz, which aims to put the conversation to rest surrounding his position in the rap game.

Swizz cooks up the haunting instrumental, which includes a sample of DMX’s vocals, while Lil Wayne delivers one of his best performances in a minute. While Wayne delivers one of his best verses in a minute, the song, unfortunately, limits DMX’s contributions to a sample instead of a full 16 bars. Still, Lil Wayne and Swizz continue to shine as collaborators following the release of “Uproar.” Check the single out above and sound off with your thoughts in the comments.

Quotable Lyrics
Best Rapper, ex-trapper, dressed dapper
Swizzy gave me a headbanger, a neck-snapper
Ex-factor, make a rapper an example
All I need is a beat with a DMX sample.

Lil Wayne And Juelz Santana Reunite In The Studio, Seemingly For ‘Tha Carter VI’

Lil Wayne is hard at work in the studio on his upcoming album, Tha Carter VI. As Weezy’s albums always boast iconic collaborations, Tha Carter VI may see him reuniting with one of his longtime collaborators. Yesterday, Juelz Santana shared video clips on Instagram of them two in the studio.

“CARTER 6 In Process…#ICFMF” read the caption.

The #ICFMF hashtag refers to I Can’t Feel My Face joint mixtape the two have been rumored to eventually release since 2007. Despite 15 years of delays, Santana spoke to TMZ back in July and shared that he still believes the mixtape will see the light of day.

“All I’ma say is Wayne is my brother,” he said. “We are never not working on music outside of each other, as well as together, so for us to do a I Can’t Feel My Face project is definitely not unlikely to happen.”

Over the years, Santana and Weezy have collaborated several times, on songs like “Make It Work For You,” from Santana’s 2005 album, What The Game’s Been Missing! and “You Ain’t Got Nuthin’” from Wayne’s 2008 album, Tha Carter III.

As of now, Wayne has not teased a projected release date for the sixth installment of his Tha Carter series.

When Will Lil Wayne Release ‘Tha Carter VI?’

It’s been nearly four years since Lil Wayne released Tha Carter V, the most recent installment in his trademark series. After kicking off the series in 2004 with Tha Carter, Wayne reached for GOAT rapper status with That Carter II in 2005 before winning a Grammy with 2008’s Tha Carter III. Three years later we returns with Tha Carter IV which sold nearly a million copies in its first week. A dispute between Wayne and Birdman, who owns Cash Money Records which Wayne was previously signed to, caused Tha Carter V to be delayed until 2018. Hopefully, there are no delay issues when it’s time for Tha Carter VI to arrive.

When Will Lil Wayne Release Tha Carter VI?

There isn’t an official release date for yet, but Lil Wayne previously announced that the project is “coming soon.” He shared this news during his performance at Drake’s OVO Festival earlier this month. As we know with artists, “coming soon” means as early as two weeks to as far as sixth months, sometimes even longer. With that being said, we’ll have to wait a bit longer for some concrete information about Tha Carter VI.

The upcoming album, which would make for the 14th in Wayne’s career and the first since Funeral, is one that he’s been talking about for a couple of years now. Back in 2020, during an interview with Variety, he said, “My favorite Carter album is the next one.” The following year, during an appearance on ESPN, he said, “Carter VI is coming soon, but I got No Ceilings coming first. No Ceilings 3.” The latter project was released at the end of 2020, which cleared the way for Wayne to continue and finish work on Tha Carter IV.

Lil Wayne Reveals ‘Tha Carter VI’ Is ‘Coming Soon’ At October World Festival

During a much-anticipated Young Money reunion last night (August 6) at Drake’s October World Festival in Toronto, Drake, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj reunited to perform together for the first time in years. Toward the end of the show, Wayne revealed he has a new project in the works.

“I’m working on Carter VI, coming soon!” he said to the crowd.

Shortly after, a sign reading “Tha Carter VI” displayed on a large screen.

Wayne first hinted at Tha Carter VI in a 2020 interview with Variety, when he said “My favorite Carter album is the next one.

During an appearance on ESPN which took place the following month, he said “Carter VI is coming soon, but I got No Ceilings coming first. No Ceilings 3.”

Last month, Weezy took to Instagram to honor a police officer who saved his life when he was 12 years old, after he attempted suicide.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Weezy said in a caption. “I was dying when I met u at this very spot. U refused to let me die. Everything that doesn’t happen, doesn’t happen for a reason. That reason being you and faith. RIP uncle Bob. Aunt Kathie been waiting for u. I’ll love & miss u both and live for us all.”
