Why Wasn’t Lil Wayne Selected To Perform At The Super Bowl?

While the announcement that Kendrick Lamar would perform the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in New Orleans was met with general excitement from fans, some fans questioned the pick, believing that local artist Lil Wayne would have been a better selection. So, why wasn’t Lil Wayne chosen to perform at the Super Bowl?

First things first: There’s never been a rule that the Super Bowl halftime performers must be local acts. That’s a recent development from hip-hop fans online after a “wouldn’t it be cool if…” proposition evolved like the monsters from an Alien movie into something far less innocuous.

In the last five years, we’ve had Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who are most notably not from Miami; The Weekend, who is not from Tampa; and Rihanna, who is not from Arizona. The first show to be performed entirely by locals in pretty much the whole modern history of the Super Bowl Halftime Show was 2022’s combination of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar in Los Angeles, and they were joined by two New Yorkers and a Detroiter.

Of course, coming off an impressive showing by Usher in Las Vegas this past February, it only makes sense fans would want the newly minted “tradition” to return. However understandable it is, though, Roc Nation, the NFL’s music partner, hasn’t ever had an obligation to hometown performers (and when you think about where all the NFL has teams, let’s all just be thankful for that).

Kendrick’s pick also meets pretty much all the criteria Roc Nation would be looking for in a performer. To let Audiomack co-founder and longtime industry insider Brian Zisook tell it, K. Dot’s available, popular, and culturally impactful, with enough hits to fill up the 15-minute performance slot and a penchant for showmanship that will translate well both live and on TV.

Now, as to why Lil Wayne was not selected. While some fans — and even some veteran performers like Cam’ron and Mase — would rather believe in elaborate conspiracies about Roc Nation founder Jay-Z holding a decades-long grudge against Wayne, the truth is probably a lot simpler: Wayne just doesn’t meet the above criteria.

While his popularity is undeniable, it’s equally undeniable that the peak of that popularity is past him; for contrast, Lil Wayne hasn’t had a top-ten-charting single in the past five years (2019’s “Don’t Cry” featuring the late XXXtentacion). And while he’s got more than enough hits to fill the allotted set time, Wayne’s always been a meat-and-potatoes kind of performer; he certainly isn’t going to break out roller skates and costume changes, let alone construct a whole hall of mirrors on the field or hover on a platform above it.

Meanwhile, we aren’t even sure Wayne would be available to perform next February; he could have a tour booked, he could be working on new music, or be involved in one of a thousand other projects. As a hardcore sports fan, he may be planning to take in the show from the stands. Or, on the other hand, perhaps he is available, does have the desire, and actually is part of K. Dot’s plan for the show — although their respective relationships with Drake make this outcome unlikely.

After all, Wayne’s one of Kendrick’s biggest inspirations aside from Kurupt, and it’s not like the Compton native is averse to including guest stars in his sets. It’d probably be far easier for Wayne to appear for a verse of “A Milli” than put together a whole show for a national audience who may not even be all that familiar with his work (try to remember that country music is the most popular genre on the charts this year, so there may not be much demand for a “Bling Bling” performance outside Wayne’s existing audience).

So, while we can’t say for sure why Wayne wasn’t picked to lead the show, we do know that there are plenty of good reasons for Kendrick Lamar’s selection. And, since we can’t completely count out a Wayne appearance, it seems premature to call it a snub. We don’t even know who’s playing the actual game yet, so maybe a little patience is warranted — and could pay off when halftime actually hits.

Charlamagne Tha God Theorizes Drake Has Already Taken Legal Action Over Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Performance

Charlamagne Tha God says he expects that people from the NFL, Roc Nation, and more all received legal letters in the wake of Kendrick Lamar announcing his performance at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. Discussing the move on Monday’s episode of The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne argued that Drake will not be okay with Lamar calling him a pedophile on stage at the event.

“If he does ‘Not Like Us’ at the Super Bowl, I want the opening cords and then just the hook,” Charlamagne began. “If you think that the NFL and Roc Nation and a bunch of other people didn’t get a whole bunch of legal letters yesterday from people with owls as their stamp. I promise you, you’re not calling me a pedophile at the Super Bowl. I guarantee you, the OVO people sent so many legal letters yesterday.”

From there, Charlemagne discussed fans being upset that the NFL didn’t choose Lil Wayne to perform at the event. One of the many voices to speak out on that topic was Master P. He argued on social media: As Ambassador of Entertainment in the City of New Orleans I have to agree with the fans that Lil Wayne should be a part of this celebration as well. He’s one of the greatest Hip Hop artists alive, still relevant and he’s a New Orleans native. Let’s not miss this cultural moment in the South. Life is too short! We have to give our legends their flowers while they are here. #Godisgood Change starts with us.” Cam’ron also addressed JAY-Z about the decision on It Is What It Is.

Boosie Badazz Rants Against Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

Boosie Badazz is one of many people online who have an issue with Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show. However, his background for this debate is much different than other conversations happening online. For one, a lot of people are just roping the Drake battle into this and making this more about a war between OVO and Roc Nation. But the Baton Rouge native loves his native Louisiana, and agrees with people saying that Kendrick was a deserved pick, but the incorrect one. Specifically, he shouted out some other New Orleans rap legends that should’ve been tapped to perform at the massive event in the city on February 9, 2025.

“ALL YALL ACTING LIKE YALL COOL WITH HOW THEY PLAYING IT FOR THE SUPERBOWL,” Boosie’s rant against Kendrick Lamar began. “SMH THE MOST CULTURAL CITY N THE USA( NEW ORLÉANS)ITS A SMACK N THE FACE TO EVERY HIP HOP LEGEND FROM LOUISIANA!! @MasterPMiller @BIRDMAN5STAR THIS SHOWS THEY NEVER WANTED YALL TO KICK N THE DOOR N THE FIRST PLACE CAUSE THEY STILL TRYNA LOCK IT!! SUPERBOWL 22” WAS N CALI N CALI ARTIST WAS ALLOWED TO DO THEY THANG N IT WAS A GREAT SHOW!! BUT NOW ITS N LOUISIANA N NO LOUISIANA LEGENDS CANT DO THEY THANG #idontrespectit.”

Boosie Speaks On Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl

Boosie does bring up a solid point: Kendrick Lamar performed at the 2022 Super Bowl alongside Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and more in California, and the next two Super Bowls will be in the state. But there are also so many other factors that contributed to this decision that it’s hard to really blame anyone for it specifically. In a similar way, it’s tough to attribute negative attacks to this move or characterize it as something that deep. Jay-Z seems pretty excited for the whole thing. But the big factors of criticism at the end of the day are the NFL’s treatment of the Black community and the promotion of the U.S.’ capitalist machine, not whether or not Lil Wayne should’ve been the headliner.

Meanwhile, there’s still a lot of debate over whether or not a Weezy halftime show would be good. Conversely, there are plenty of fans who don’t think Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl will be that good, and there are loads of others that think it will be spectacular. At the end of the day, it’s the same conversation we’ve always had around this topic. We just swapped out the names.

Reginae Carter Stirs The Pot Further Amid Lil Wayne-Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl Debate

There continues to be a lot of arm wrestling over who deserves this upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show performance more. With the 59th game being in New Orleans, Louisiana for now the eleventh time (third this century), fans of Weezy are furious and want answers as to why he was “robbed” once again. In fact, even other artists in hip-hop are hoping that Kendrick Lamar will do everyone a favor and bring out Lil Wayne. However, there are still quite a lot of big names backing the kid from Compton, especially the man who was responsible for selecting him.

“Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer,” Jay-Z said. “His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come”. Overall, Hov makes a lot of great points, and with the year that he’s having and the potential for a new album coming soon, it was a pretty safe and reasonable pick. However, this is not going to stop the Wayne supporters from dubbing this as a massive injustice.

Perhaps the MCs biggest fan, –eldest child and only daughter– Reginae Carter, certainly feels that same way. In a vague and timely tweet, the model and entrepreneur simply stated that “They envy greatness !!!!”. However, not many people in The Neighborhood Talk comment section are feeling this response to her father not being selected. Instead, its gotten her tons of backlash from fans of Lamar. “The Kendrick hate is hilarious dawg. That man is an artist in every way possible now nobody likes him out of nowhere 😂”, one user writes back. “The Super Bowl has been in Louisiana 10 times…Why didn’t yall call for Lil Wayne in any of those other games? Because yall hating on Kendrick…& Newsflash they don’t pick the artist in connection with where the game is played…Dr Dre was a special case”.

There’s a good chance that this debate continues for a long time, so be sure to stick around for any updates. Pusha T Seemingly Shades Drake With Response To Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Announcement

50 Cent Recalls JAY-Z & Roc Nation Trying To Keep Him From Performing At The Super Bowl

50 Cent says JAY-Z’s company, Roc Nation, attempted to keep him from performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2022. He reflected on the historic performance and how it nearly never happened without the help of Eminem during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“They wanted to leave me out of it. They didn’t want me there,” he remarked, which prompted a request for an explaination. He continued: “Roc Nation. Yeah, they didn’t want me there. Eminem wouldn’t do it without me. That’s how I ended up on the show because he was not coming if I didn’t do it. When that happens, you go, ‘Damn, so you just lost Eminem because you didn’t bring 50? Damn. All right. Bring 50 then.’ But if it was up to them, they would not have me there. I’m the surprise. I’m not on the bill at all. But they couldn’t get Em to do it without me.”

On several occasions over the two years since, he’s thanked Eminem for sticking up for him. “50 is like a brother to me,” Eminem told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about their relationship. “50 has proven again and again that there’s really nothing he can’t do, and nobody gets in the way of him getting it done.” Outside of music, 50’s working with Eminem through his G-Unit Film and Television company to produce a series based on the Detroit rapper’s 2002 film, 8 Mile. Usher Puts His All Into Rehearsing For The Super Bowl Halftime Show In A New Short Film Directed By Jay-Z

Just nearly a week after Usher killed it at the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, fans are getting another glimpse into how exactly he pulled off all the surprises.

In a new short film that dropped via the music platform, it provides a look at Usher’s rehearsals and the changes that were made to the setlist and production. Oh, and it was directed by Jay-Z and Hamish Hamilton, as they shot the footage entirely on an iPhone.

“As I put together the songs, like a puzzle piece to represent this type of soulful music, R&B and mixture of this pop that is my own, I think God really blessed me with the right people to help build the artist that I am,” Usher shared in the ten-minute film. “I’m happy that I’m able to share this moment with them.”

“If you put in the work, people will respect what you do,” he added.

Throughout the video, he runs through the routine repeatedly with his backup dancers. Usher also takes some time to do vocal warmups, as he rehearses to pronounce the consonants a little stronger. It is also split with high-quality footage taken up close during the actual show.

Usher Addresses Backlash To Alicia Keys Embrace During Super Bowl Halftime Show

Usher says there was no ill intent behind his embrace of Alicia Keys at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Speaking with The Breakfast Club, he explained that he, Keys, and Swizz Beatz are all on good terms about the situation. Usher faced backlash online after the show for the way he held onto the iconic singer after performing “My Boo.”

“In no way is there anything that was done there that should have been viewed as bad or in any way perverted or anything like that,” Usher said. “No, it was literally about having fun because of a song that me and Alicia made many years ago and we celebrated it because of the legacy of it. No disrespect to anybody or anything like that.”
