Trippie Redd & Lil Uzi Vert Team Up On “Holy Smokes

We’ll soon receive a new album from Trippie Redd and he’s back with another single that is slated to appear on the record. Since 2017, we’ve received a project from Trippie Redd every year, if not more: A Love Letter to You,  Life’s A Trip, A Love Letter To You 4, and Pegasus. We’ll soon receive Trip At Knight, and following his Playboi Carti-assisted single “Miss The Rage” that Trippie shared back in May, the Ohio rapper returns with “Holy Smokes” featuring Lil Uzi Vert.

Trippie hasn’t been silent regarding his admiration of Uzi, and in February when he sat down with Flaunt magazine, he spoke about being inspired by his friend. “I look at him as one of the OG young guys, I really admire what he does for the culture,” said Trippie. “I really pay attention to what he does.”

“Holy Smokes” has a Pop-inspired appeal that may transcend fanbases, so stream the single and let us know what you think.

Throwin’ money up like I’m nauseous
Baby girl, I’m exhausted

Every day walk with a check and I’m motherf*ckin’ talkin’

Funk Flex & King Von Add Polo G To “Lurkin (Remix)”

Seven months after releasing “Lurkin” featuring a posthumous look from the late King Von, Funk Flex has returned with a remix. The famed Hip Hop DJ has been steadily releasing new single after single as he prepares for his forthcoming album to hit streaming services, and on Friday (July 16), Flex officially announced the rollout season for his next project, Funk Flex Presents: The Curation 001. It’s reported that the record will arrive before 2021’s end.

On the remix to “Lurkin,” Flex taps hitmaker Polo G for additional vocals, and it’s an impressive look from the No. 1-charting rapper. A press release stated that Flex decided to move forward with this remix because he wanted to continued to honor King Von’s legacy, and having Polo G assist was the perfect fit.

Like many of Funk Flex’s other releases, “Lurkin (Remix)” arrives with a visual that shows him alongside both Von and Polo G on the streets of New York City. Stream “Lurkin (Remix)” and let us know what you think.

Quotable Lyrics

If I’m comin’ in your club, then I brought the Glock
Opps pull up, they won’t make it out the parking lot
My lil’ n*gga keep shootin’ ’til his target drop
Treat his head like a cig when we spark his top
I be feelin’ like I’m still in the field
Pipe clutchin’ while I’m whippin’ the wheel

Normani & Cardi B Strip Down In Sexy Visual To “Wild Side”

The last time we received a summer collaboration from Cardi B, it came with the assistance of Megan Thee Stallion. Soon, “WAP” took over airwaves and social media, followed up by a viral dance that helped the track reach the top of the charts. This week, Cardi shared that she had a surprise in store, and yesterday (July 14), both she and Normani revealed that “Wild Side” would arrive Friday (July 16).

The artwork to Normani’s latest single showed both ladies posing nude with only hair extensions to cover them, and the racy photo got fans talking about what could be expected from these two. Normani shows off her harmonizing skills on”Wild Side” and the Pop-R&B star spices things up with Cardi coming in with her usual explicit bars.

The pair teamed up for a sexy visual where Normani displayed her dance skills over the Aaliyah-inspired production—and both the singer and Cardi B take it all off. Watch the music video for “Wild Side” and let us know your thoughts.

Tory Lanez Shares Island-Inspired “Crocodile Teeth Freestyle”

Ahead of all of the artists that are slated to drop for New Music Friday, Tory Lanez has shared a new single. The singer-rapper has continued to press forward with releases despite the polarizing debates that have occurred for the better part of a year regarding his alleged involvement with Megan The Stallion’s shooting incident. He’s remained dedicated to proving that he can’t be canceled, and his successes have done just that.

In recent days, Lanez has taken to his Instagram to tease his “Crocodile Teeth Freestyle,” promising to release the track if his followers returned with a certain number of likes. His fans came through, and on Thursday (July 15), Lanez delivered the island-inspired track that is poised for summer playlists. “I’m just warming up,” he wrote in the caption to an Instagram post about “Crocodile Teeth Freestyle.”

Stream the single below and let us know if Lanez knocked this one out of the park.

Nas Explored The Complexity Of The N-Word On His Untitled 2008 Album

Certain artists aren’t afraid to push boundaries when it comes to the packaging of their albums. As recently reported, Halsey made a powerful statement about the policing of womens’ bodies by exposing her breast on her forthcoming album cover, and more than a decade, Nas attempted to do something similar with the title of his ninth studio album.

Originally titled N*gger, Nas’ 2008 album was conceptualized to be an exploration of Blackness and a rallying cry against oppression worldwide, but upon backlash, the now-Grammy-winning rapper opted to just drop it as an untitled album. Released on July 15, 2008, Nas’ Untitled celebrates its 13-year anniversary, and although it typically gets placed in the bottom of pretty much ever Nas album ranking, we revisit the album’s 13th track, “Y’all My N*ggas,” in honor of the politically charged project

Despite its loaded lyrical content, “Y’all My N*ggas” employs a funky and lively beat courtesy of J. Meyers, and rather than feeling like a full-on four minutes of preaching, the track entertains while offering varied perspectives on the n-word. Crafting an enjoyable song while exploring the politics of the racial epithet is no simple task, but of course, God’s Son did it with ease

Revisit Untitled by listening to “Y’all My N*ggas” below. Thirteen years later, where does Nas’ ninth studio album rank in his discography for you?

Quotable Lyrics

My father was not a banker, neither was my neighbor
When it came to getting paper, who the hell was gon’ train us?
Oppression couldn’t escape us through the ages
We changed the basis of derogatory phrases
And I say it’s quite amazing
The use of ghetto terms developed our own language
No matter where it came from
It’s celebrated, now people are mad if they ain’t one

JMSN Drops Off Sprawling “Love 2 U”

As we hypothesized, it appears a new season of JMSN has begun. The low-key artist returned in April after a lengthy hiatus with “Rolling Stone,” seemingly a teaser of new music to come. Just last week, that proved correct with the release of a sprawling, 8-minute long ballad titled “Love 2 U.”

Today, the artist returns to the complete the sound with the visual component. What starts as a close-up of JMSN strumming the guitar, and a profile of the man himself, soon erupts into a ball of fire and we’re transitioned into a psychedelic scene, where back-lit women dance slowly to the music and JMSN is a bleach blond floating, smoking, and sometimes spinning head.

The song contains a guitar solo after JMSN’s high-pitched crooning swells and subsides, and it’s the guitar solo that really dominates and dictates the record– it occupies the majority of it, in fact. JMSN goes against the youth-driven 2-minute-song norm and that’s really not all too surprising, considering the artist’s sound matures yearly– not just in the sense that JMSN is getting physically older (duh), but in the sense that, with each new album he releases, he seems to dig deeper into the popular sounds of the past– creating his own vintage brand of r’n’b.

Check out this new record and let us know what you think. More r’n’b on our R&B SEASON playlist right here

Our batteries dying
We both should be rational

Fivio Foreign Drops Funk Flex Freestyle On His Second Day Out

Fivio Foreign is back and he’s not wasting any time. The New York drill rapper was released from jail this week and on his second day back home, he stopped by Funk Flex’s radio show to deliver an eye-catching freestyle, where he references his incarceration, how he kept busy while locked up, and more.

The 31-year-old recording artist starts by shouting out the inmates he became friendly with behind bars before cracking a joke about how he got locked up in the first place. “I tried to run but they caught me,” he raps at the beginning of the freestyle. If you recall, Fivio was initially nabbed by the police after he fled on foot before a gun fell out of his pants. The gun was retrieved and Fivio was arrested, spending the next three months in jail.

In his new freestyle, the drill star references the thousand push-ups he did with his bunkie to keep fit, one particular female correctional officer who had eyes for the rapper, and more. Listen below.

Welcome back, Fivio!

Quotable Lyrics:

I mix the commissary with the lunch meat
I did a thousand push-ups with my bunkie
He said he’d do a n***a if he want me
Female C.O. acting like she want me
I got my feet up, eatin’, feelin’ comfy
I called my bitch, she told me that she love me
She said she couldn’t wait to get to hug me
Fucked me on the first day that she looked
I was stinky, and I was reflectin’
I got a question for the reverend, if you kill a killer do you go to heaven?

Rico Nasty Rocks Out On Love Ghost’s “Wolfsbane”

Rico Nasty’s explosive flow and delivery has always made her a prime candidate to explore heavier musical genres, and today, the former XXL Freshman has connected with Love Ghost on their new single “Wolfsbane.” It’s but another example of today’s new generation of young rappers experimenting with new styles, and here, Rico uses the opportunity to explore a direction that’s been of particular interest to her.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, she explained that her contribution to “Wolfsbane” stemmed from a desire to get into her “rock bag.” “I love when bands want to bring me into their world and let me rock out,” she explains. “The production behind this song is fire. It gives two different vibes when the beat switches, bringing a hard-rock element.”

That’s not to say the hip-hop elements are removed entirely, represented here by the presence of up-tempo percussion — though to be fair, drums of that nature have become so ubiquitous in different genres it’s becoming hard to associate them with hip-hop anymore.

Check out Rico Nasty’s heavy new collaboration with Love Ghost now.

Pouya & Kxllswxtch Set The Dancefloor Ablaze With “Burn”

These days, rappers are becoming increasingly unafraid to experiment with different genres, with the SoundCloud hip-hop scene being among the most flexible in that regard. Today, Pouya and Kxllswxtch have connected to release “Burn,” a CRONiK-produced track that finds them trying their hand at a sort of dance-rock hybrid.

Over an uptempo blend of chugging guitars and crisp drums, Pouya and Kxllswxtch set a tone with a catchy, infectious melody. Though certainly different from what one might expect, it’s genuinely well done, with both parties sounding comfortable over the live arrangement. It’s likely that this song would translate quite nicely to the stage, especially with a full band backing both vocalists.

Of course, those who remain unwaveringly rigid in their tastes will likely find no pleasure here. For those who do enjoy a bit of experimentation, however, give Pouya and Kxllswxtch’s “Burn” a spin.

Dark like a silhouette, alright, alright
Just wanna lie down
Just the world is burning right now

A$AP Rocky Made A Strong Impression On “Bass”

Though there are many who found A$AP Rocky’s latest studio album Testing to be rather challenging, in hindsight, it’s easy to understand how his style reached that point. With rumblings that his upcoming ALL $MILES project might drop at some point this year, it feels appropriate to circle back to the early days of Flacko, where the seeds of his adventurous approach were initially planted.

For many, Live. Love. A$AP marked an introduction to the Harlem rapper, who appeared to find a kindred creative spirit in Clams Casino. Though Clams contributed a variety of tracks to the breakout tape, one of the biggest highlights arrives by way of “Bass.” Flacko switches his style in Jekyll/Hyde fashion, shifting between pitched-down vocals and his more familiar cadence while the beat follows suit. Though many have called Testing a major departure from “older Rocky,” it actually feels like a logical conclusion to his work with Clams, “Bass” included.

With ALL $MILES on the way, be sure to revisit one of Rocky’s early fan-favorites in “Bass,” a track that set the table for one of hip-hop’s most experimental emcees.
