ScarLip Brings On NLE Choppa For A Remix Of Her High Octane Banger “Blick”

One of the most popular subgenres of hip-hop over the past couple of years has been drill. Additionally, Jersey club music is also seeping its way into rap as of late as well. We saw artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Baby Tate, and others pull it off successfully. Well, what happens when you combine the two? You get a blistering track like “Blick” by ScarLIp.

That was one of a handful of extremely viral tracks that put the Bronx New Yorker on the radar last year. ScarLip is trying to bring some vibrancy to what can be repetitive sound. In an interview she did with Stereogum, she mentioned what she wanted to bring to the table. “Everything is too pretty right now, so I am bringing back an ugly truth. I bring authenticity, unapologetic rawness, and aggression. I’m bringing pain back to rap. I’m always gonna bring the ugly side.”

We can certainly see what the 22-year-old is talking about. “Blick” is exactly that and more. The fast-paced beat induces that stank-face reaction and ScarLip’s energy is unapologetic. Who Is Scar Lip? Meet The Bronx Rapper

If you’ve been paying any attention to the discourse surrounding female rappers lately, you’ll likely be aware of a common complaint about rap’s recent slate of it-girls, who take more than their fair share of abuse online for making rap that breaks from traditional, street-centric, tough-guy content in favor of twerk-ready, independent woman anthems. While those men (it’s always men) are wrong, rap’s latest it-girl offers something completely different. Meet Scar Lip, the Brooklyn-born, Bronx-raised mic menace whose single “This Is New York” has her dominating viral playlists and rapidly becoming one of hip-hop’s most recognizable faces.

Who Is Scar Lip?

Born Sierra Lewis sometime around the turn of the millennium (not a lot of biographical info is readily available about this burgeoning star), Scar Lip had a rough upbringing, resulting in the injury that gave her her stage name and a devil-may-care approach to rhyming (and life) that has many fans comparing her to a young DMX, who she counts as an inspiration alongside the rap group Onyx. Those influences show in her flow.

While a number of similarly tough-talking female lyricists have risen from the gritty streets of New York (among them: Cardi B, Lola Brooke, Nicki Minaj, and more), Scar Lip raps like the living embodiment of the phrase “mad brick” — both the local idiom meaning “it’s hella cold” and, well… imagine very angry masonry flying at your face. That’s how Scar Lip raps. Every bar is a big brass barbell being flung by the most brolic and belligerent weightlifter in the gym.

A sample from “This Is New York”: “This is New York, f*ck I look like tellin’ a n**** good morning?”

That’s the first line, by the way. Scar Lip’s exaggerated hostility has captured rap fans’ imaginations thanks to tracks like “New York” and “Glizzy Gobbler” and her viral Funk Flex freestyle, leading to appreciation from newfound peers like Swizz Beatz, who put her on his Hip-Hop 50 EP alongside fellow NY stalwarts Benny The Butcher and Jadakiss, Shaq, who recruited her for his “Bodies Freestyle,” and Snoop Dogg, who added his voice to a “This Is Cali” remix.

Although she’s yet to release a full-length body of work (and test fans’ tolerance for 20+ minutes of unhinged bars like the sample above), there’s certainly a lane for her hyper-aggressive style among more laid-back contemporaries like Ice Spice and Latto. And with so much support from hip-hop’s old heads (who probably miss when the genre radiated an air of danger compared to the more emo-friendly material on tap today), she’s got the headwinds to take her far after signing with Epic Records earlier this week. Ready or not, here she comes.

Swizz Beatz Thinks DMX Sent Scar Lip To Him

Swizz Beatz is having some interesting encounters with the spirit of DMX recently. During an interview with The Breakfast Club last month, Swizz recounted a powerful dream he had. In it, he felt the presence of his late friend and iconic rapper. Prior to sharing this extraordinary experience, Swizz expressed that it didn’t feel like DMX was truly gone, but rather just temporarily absent. He described feeling a sense that the rapper was somewhere relaxed and at ease. However, when significant anniversaries related to the DMX approach, Swizz is struck with a profound realization of his friend’s physical absence.

Swizz went on to describe his dream about the late rapper. “But the thing that make me feel easy about it is he came to me,” he continued. “I seen him in my dream. He came to me. And this was, like, super quick too. And he let me know he was good. I’m the person that be like, ‘He ain’t come to see you, what you talkin’ about?’ I seen him. I felt him.” However, that isn’t the only thing that DMX is doing for Swizz Beatz. In fact, he says he feels like the late icon sent up-and-coming rapper Scar Lip to him.

Swizz Thinks Scar Lip Has The Same Great Heart As DMX

According to Swizz Beatz, he believes that DMX played a spiritual role in connecting him with Scar Lip. The rapper is an emerging star out of New York. Recently, Swizz has taken on the role of mentor for the young artist. During an interview with Audacy’s Hip-Hop Made, the renowned “Ruff Ryders Anthem” producer shared that the connection to Scar Lip was initiated by the spirit of DMX. Apparently, DMX’s fiancée Desiree Lindstrom urged him to collaborate with the new, talented artist from the Bronx.

“I honestly feel like DMX sent Scar Lip my way because she’s too much of his energy,” Swizz said. “Like I’ve never seen an artist that just naturally have what I know DMX have. And they two different artists, two different levels, yes. But I’m not talking about that. You know, like, that sister’s been through a lot, like Dog been through a lot.
