🎓 Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Announces $300M Philly Education Campaign

Today, it was announced that Jay-Z will be using his empire for good with an impressive educational campaign in Philadelphia. Reportedly, the campaign will give students from low-income households around the city opportunities to secure up to $300M in scholarships. The company will be hosting various events in the region next week to educate attendees about Senate Bill 757, also known as the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS). It aims to help students at the state’s lowest-performing schools by increasing educational opportunities.

“We have enjoyed such a special connection with Philadelphians, so we’ve made it our mission to invest in the long-term success of the city’s changemakers,” Dania Diaz, Managing Director of Philanthropy at Roc Nation says of the campaign. “Impact starts with the students and with awareness. We want to empower the youth and families with the knowledge to pursue their scholastic dreams, make their voices heard and become the leaders of tomorrow.”

This is far from the first time Roc Nation has shown its commitment to the city of Philadelphia, however. The company has been working alongside REFORM Alliance for five years with the goal of transforming the state’s probation and parole system. It’s also put on the Made in America Festival regularly since 2012. Unfortunately, the music festival was been canceled both this year and in 2023. It promises, however, to make “an exciting return” in the coming years.

Kalan.FrFr Vows To “MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN” On Latest EP

You could argue that the West Coast hip-hop scene has been run by Kendrick Lamar for the better part of a decade. If not, it is undeniable that he has been taking over for the last several weeks. His diss tracks and verses have been playing all throughout the streets of California in particular. “Not Like Us,” his most recent diss and perhaps the Drake kill shot, has sort of become the anthem out West. With that in mind, artists of lower stature, such as Kalan.FrFr, really have to come through with some major heat.

Kalan.FrFr is looking to put on for his hometown, and the state at large, with a new EP called MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN. The 29-year-old multi-hyphenate might not have the fan base of a K-Dot, but he certainly has the backing of a major label (Roc Nation), and the co-signs from plenty of big fish. Giving this new tape that West Coast street cred are fellow veterans YG, Ty Dolla $ign, as well as G Herbo and Spooky Jay. Kalan.FrFr is following up on a December 2023 EP, NOT HARD 2 UNDERSTAND, as well a 2022 LP, 222. Furthermore, leading up to MTWGA, the “Right Wit It” MC dropped one promo track, “EVERYBODY,” which called out all the gangs.

Listen To MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN By Kalan.FrFr

So, how does Kalan.FrFr perform on this new EP? To be quite frank, it comes across as run of the mill West Coast fare. The track that managed to stand out to us was “NO MUNYON NO FUNYON” with G Herbo. The Chicago native brings an animated performance to break up the flow that Kalan brings, which is his trademark smooth flow. Additionally, Spooky Jay, has probably the most unique outing that will definitely grab your attention. But back to Kalan, he sort of recycles that formula across the rest of the tape. On top of that talking about the same topics (flexing and being around women), it gets even more redundant. The beats are passable and non-offensive, which is fine, but it just does not move the needle. Still, give the tape a chance with the links above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new EP MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN by Kalan.FrFr? What tracks have you been gravitating toward? Who had the strongest guest performance? Where do you rank this project amongst the rest of his discography? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Kalan.FrFr. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN Tracklist:

  1. BAD B**** ON SEEN
  2. CAN’T GET IN (JEALOUS)
  3. EVERYBODY
  4. COOL DOWN (feat. YG)
  5. SILHOUETTE (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
  6. ANDFUK
  7. NO MUNYON NO FUNYON (feat. G Herbo)
  8. KEEP GOING (feat. Spooky Jay)

[WATCH] Cam’ron And Mase Laugh At Artists Signing To Roc Nation Who Think They’re Getting A Verse From Jay-Z

Screenshot 2024 03 21 at 8.56.25 AM

NBA star Lebron James recently launched his new “Mind The Game” podcast with JJ Reddick, which led Draymond Green to saying that he had “a bone to pick” with James. Draymond stated, “I’m a little upset that LeBron James is going on a podcast, and he still hasn’t been on ‘The Draymond Green Show.’ But when it’s your own thing, you kind of can’t say anything, so I guess I’ll live with it for now. Pick the bone with him that I got to pick with him later.”

Cam’ron and Mase, the hosts of It Is What It Is sports podcast, reacted to Green’s statement, with Cam’ron comparing it to artists signing to Roc Nation and thinking they’re getting a verse from Jay-Z. Cam’ron and Mase laughed at the thought , with Cam adding that artists will get the Paper Planes hat and a “vintage pair of S. Dots.”

Cam’ron & Mase Troll Draymond Green With Roc Nation & JAY-Z Comparison

Cam’ron and Mase weighed in on Draymond Green’s recent comments on LeBron James not appearing on his podcast during their show, It Is What It Is. In doing so, they compared Green joining Klutch Sports to artists signing to Roc Nation and expecting a feature from JAY-Z.

Green had been discussing James teaming up with JJ Redick to launch a new podcast, Mind the Game. On his own eponymous podcast, Green explained: “I’m a little upset that LeBron James is going on a podcast, and he still hasn’t been on ‘The Draymond Green Show.’ But when it’s your own thing, you kind of can’t say anything, so I guess I’ll live with it for now. Pick the bone with him that I got to pick with him later.”

Mase and Cam discussed the quote on the latest episode of It Is What It Is. “It’s almost like being on Roc Nation and you can’t get the verse,” Mase said, sparking Cam’ron to remark:” And, that happens a lot. You go to Roc Nation thinking you getting that Hov verse.” Mase added: “There’s a few n****s thought they was gonna get the Hov verse. You still waiting for that Hov verse.” From there, Cam’ron got more serious on the topic. “As far as Draymond is concerned, I know they good friends and Draymond’s been doing this for a long time– longer than we have anyway, and I think Draymond was one of the first athletes that was like, ‘New Media.’ I think what’s going on now is that the market– never for LeBron James. I’m just saying in general. It’s starting to get oversaturated,” he said.

M.I.A. Blames Jay-Z And Roc Nation, Among Others, For Her US Visa Application Getting Denied

m.i.a.

During her ongoing tiff with Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj notably took a detour into conspiracy theorizing that Jay-Z and his company, Roc Nation, were sabotaging her career. This picked up a thread from a conspiracy that Tory Lanez propagated, that Roc Nation supposedly paid off the judge and jury in his assault case for shooting Meg in 2020.

The latest artist to blame Jay and the Roc for their troubles is former collaborator M.I.A., who took her complaints to Twitter for an ALL CAPS rant that began with her accusing Joe Biden (personally?) of holding up her visa application to come to the US. “BIDEN WON’T LET ME SEE MY CHILD,” she said, alongside a screenshot of an email specifically explaining why she can’t get a new visa due to past behavior. She also demonstrated how very little she pays attention to American politics, following up with, “I HAVE TO WAIT TILL A REPUBLICAN WINS. WOW.” Yeah. Okay. The “concentration camps at the border are perfectly fine” party. Sure.

M.I.A.’s rant continued as she accused her child’s caretakers of being convicted sex traffickers (again, not how that works), and blamed her visa application rejection on speaking out against genocide (again, not how that works — First Amendment people never seem to know what it’s for). She then made the claim that Jay-Z — who indirectly managed her career through Roc Nation — was paid off by the founder of the NXIVM cult. She also claimed after asking Jay for help gaining custody of her child, her domicile was invaded and her computers were stolen.

She eventually lapsed into old talking points about vaccines (again, there NO PROOF that vaccines endanger kids any more than the actually diseases they prevent do, what with things like smallpox, yellow fever, tetanus, and more all being LIFE THREATENING). This is par for the course for someone who has been accused of making other controversial statements.

We live in the era of “alternative facts” and “fake news” so people will believe what they want, but someone here is baiting a libel charge, and if Jay-Z is really as powerful as everyone seems to think (he almost assuredly isn’t), you’d hope they would learn to stop poking the bear. In all likelihood, they call him out because he makes a convenient scapegoat as an unrepentant capitalist who also wants to be a revolutionary with a much higher profile than the people they’re really mad at.

M.I.A. Targets Jay-Z, Roc Nation & Beyonce In Twitter Rant Over Custody Of Her Son

While the Carters wrapped up their Grammys escapade. M.I.A. just unleashed a storm on Twitter on Thursday (February 8). Moreover, she went at Jay-Z, Beyonce, Roc Nation, and many more in a tale of how she’s not allowed to see her son. Also, the 48-year-old spoke of how corporations, governments, and powerful individuals have silenced her. “BIDEN WON’T LET ME SEE MY CHILD. THE LONGEST PROCESSING IS MENT TO BE 2 MONTHS AND IT’S ALREADY BEEN THAT,” she began. “They basically saying I have to wait for a Republican to come to office because 9 months from now is the election. I’M NOT ALLOWED TO SEE MY CHILD FOR STEALING FOOD AT 18, WHEN I WAS POOR,YET UR GOVERNMENT IS OK WITH MY CHILD BEING WITH FAMILY CONVICTED FOR CHILD TRAFFICKING AND SEX CULTS OK.

“THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME AND MIGRANTS COMING IN, IS THAT I CAN’T VOTE,” M.I.A. continued. Still, she didn’t mention Hov until clearing up other grievances. However, this related to her previous partnership. “I M PAYING U.S TAXES TOO. SICK. I HAVE SHOWN SUPPORT FOR [whistleblower Julian Assange] FOR 14 YEARS AND HAVE BEEN TO THE USA MANY TIMES. THE ONLY THING DIFFERENT THIS TIME IS, I CALLED FOR A CEASE FIRE AND SPOKE OUT AGAINST GENOCIDE AND ETHNIC CLEANSING. NOW I AM FORCED TO PICK BETWEEN MY CHILD AND SPEAKING UP FOR WHATS RIGHT BY GOD. MY FIRST CUSTODY BATTLE WAS 2O13. MY CHILD WAS FOUR. I WAS MANAGED BY JAYZ. WHO ULTIMATELY WAS PAID BY BRONFMANS [her child’s father is businessman Benjamin Bronfman].

M.I.A. Goes Full Blast On Jay-Z & Roc Nation

“BE VERY CLEAR WHY MY MATHANGI RECORD WAS BURIED IN 2013,” M.I.A. went on. “I SACRIFICED MY CAREER FOR MY CHILD. THEY RIPPED ME OFF AND COPIED MY STYLE AND GAVE IT TO THEIR PUPPETS AND SHADOW BANNED ME ON EVERY PLATFORM. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT TO SAVE HIM FROM THE MADNESS OF WHAT YOU KNOW NOW. HILLARY CLINTON GAVE SARA BRONFMAN GADDAFIS OIL FEILDS AFTER KILLING HIM. I WAS PUNISHED FOR SAYING HE HELPED AFRICA. THEN THEY TRIED TO SEND MY CHILD TO ONE OF HER SCHOOLS. WHEN I WENT TO VISIT THE SCHOOL, THE CHILDREN LOOKED DOZY AND DRUGGED AND I COULDN’T TELL WHY. I REFUSED.

Tweets On Beyonce, Solange & More

Meanwhile, the British artist continued to call out Roc Nation. “THE DAY I WAS SERVED, 4 MY CHILD, ROC NATION STOPPED ALL COMMUNICATION WITH ME AND ALL MY EMAILS TO JAYZ ASKING FOR HELP WAS WIPED FROM MY INBOX,” she added. “MY WAS BROKEN INTO AND EVERY LAP WAS TAKEN. I WAS TRAPPED IN BROOKLYN ON ORDER SERVED THAT RESTRICTED ME LEAVING BKLYN FOR 15 YEARS.” Check out other tweets she sent out about Beyonce, Solange, her vaccination stance, and more above. Regardless of whether you agree, this should open up important conversations on these topics. In addition, it’s a lot of heavy allegations to address. Hopefully, they resolve soon. Following years of these battles, though, it must be hard to keep it all in. Furthermore, for the latest updates on M.I.A. and more news on Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Roc Nation, keep checking in with HNHH.

The History Of The Roc Nation Brunch

The Roc Nation brunch has been a fixture in the pop culture community since it began in 2011. The pre-Grammy party is a highly coveted event. It extends invitations exclusively to a select few A-listers and prominent figures in the music, film, and sports industries. The event’s exclusivity is so notable that some celebrities are marked with the symbolic Scarlet Letter of never receiving an invitation. This has led popular entertainers like Marlon Wayans to humorously suggest the idea of initiating a brunch for the Roc Nation rejects. Here’s a look back at the history of the exclusive event and the significance the brunch holds to hip hop and pop culture.

Roc Nation Formed In 2008

Jay-Z launched Roc Nation as a multidisciplinary entertainment company. It acts as a record label, production studio, and venture capital firm. The label has signed top-billed artists such as J. Cole, Rihanna, Megan Thee Stallion, and Kanye West. Under Jay-Z’s leadership, the label aimed to be more than just a home for prolific hip hop musicians. It prompted execs at Roc Nation to focus on culture at large. The pre-Grammy Roc Nation brunch tradition formed with the intent of networking with some of pop culture’s most magnanimous socialites. Moreover, it also doubled as a high-class gala. This further allowed media outlets to take note of the lavish ball and the eccentric styles on display.

The event additionally serves as a platform for Roc Nation signees to boost their star power. Securing an invite to this highly-coveted gathering is an exclusive affair. It requires a personal invitation from someone associated with the label. Invitations to the brunch also bill the gathering as “a celebration of the highest elevation of self.” The result is a social ladder thinly veiled as a casual pre-Grammy party. Here, stars lavish attention on their favorite singers, athletes, and executives, while financial backers aim to align talent with their upcoming projects.

A Private Residence Typically Hosts The Event

The Roc Nation brunch has occurred each February since 2011, with the exception of 2021 and 2022 due to COVID-19 safety regulations. The event typically takes place at a rotating establishment of private mansions. This includes those in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston. The press frequently remains uninformed about the time and location of the brunch. Most individuals learn about the event from celebrities on social media. Once the invites begin flying out, the hottest influencers often share sneak-peak glimpses into their wardrobe and aesthetic before the big day.

Further, throughout the years, Roc Nation has launched partnerships with Universal Music, Three Six Zero Entertainment, and even the NFL, due in no small part to connections formed at the illustrious brunch.

The Event Was Canceled For 2024

After making a significant impact with a return in 2023, the Roc Nation brunch was canceled in 2024. Some sources indicated the brunch would take place on Saturday, February 3, though it was later clarified that hosts Jay-Z and Beyoncé would not be able to attend. The couple apparently decided to attend Clive Davis’s annual gala. They learned that Jon Platt, a long-time creative partner of the Carters and CEO of Sony Music Publishing, would receive the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons Award. With Platt slated to attend the Clive Davis gala, the music magnates agreed to bump the exclusive brunch to join the festivities and honor their friend.

For now, there’s no word on whether this event was a one-off cancelation. Some fear it could be the beginning of the end for the illustrious gathering. The 66th Grammy Awards have just concluded, and Beyoncé currently holds the record for the most wins of all time at the esteemed ceremony. Meanwhile, Jay-Z received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, an honor shared only with the eponymous rap icon at this time.
