Tyler The Creator Said Pharrell’s ‘In My Mind’ Influenced Odd Future: ‘Very Important Piece Of Art To Me’
Now that Tyler The Creator is entering into one of the most powerful phases of his own career, he’s been sharing introspective thoughts on his own evolution as well as the influence of other artists on his thinking. While plenty of people point to Odd Future as the boundary-breakers and blueprint for the next generation of rap, Tyler let fans know that it was Pharrell who pushed him to set goals for his own creative output.
Sharing a throwback photo of himself at 15 on Twitter, he further posted his thoughts on how Pharrell’s album In My Mind was influencing him at the time. “‘In My Mind’ turns 15 today,” he wrote on Twitter. “Came out around the time of this photo. Was at hawthorne high summer school and man I can’t articulate what it means/did for me. I made odd future that summer and set out to be where i am now before 10th grade begun. Very important piece of art to me.’”

Rappers With the Longest Gaps Between Albums
Tyler The Creator Earns The ‘Juggernaut’ Title With Lil Uzi Vert And Pharrell
Tyler The Creator turned to a new chapter in his career with the 2019 release of Igor, the rapper’s fifth album. It saw him truly putting his artistry on display in the way that he wanted to. Luckily for him, it all paid off as the album would go on to win Rap Album Of The Year at the 2020 Grammys despite Tyler’s ill sentiments with the honor. That’s all in the past now as he’s returned with his latest album, Call Me If You Get Lost.
Across the project’s 16 songs, an eye-catching track on Call Me If You Get Lost comes on “Juggernaut” with Lil Uzi Vert and Pharrell. The track is a bass-knocking number that’s equally chaotic and erratic as it is energetic and bouncy. This is thanks in large part raucous placement of the song’s drums that provide a unique landscape for the three rappers to lay their bars on.
Altogether on Call Me If You Get Lost, Tyler invites 42 Dugg, Ty Dolla Sign, NBA Youngboy, Lil Wayne, Teezo Touchdown, Domo Genesis, Brent Faiyaz, Daisy World, and Fana Hues. The project was also led by two singles: “Lumberjack” and “Wusyaname.”
You can press play on “Juggernaut” in the video above.
Call Me If You Get Lost is out now via A Boy Is a Gun/Columbia. Get it here.

Pharrell Will Open A Private School For Low-Income Students In His Home State Of Virginia
There’s a long list of things that Pharrell has done for his home state of Virginia. In 2017, he pushed forward a plan to bring a new Virginia Beach Dome venue to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. He also brought the Something In The Water festival to the state in 2019 as a highlight attraction to Virginia during their College Beach Weekend. Now, the multitalented act is back with more for Virginia as he announced plans to open a private school in the state for low-income students.
The Yellowhab school will be opened in Norfolk, Virginia’s Ghent neighborhood, which is close to his Virginia Beach hometown. Children in grades 3-5 will be able to enroll at Yellowhab and tuition for at least the first year will be free with other costs to be paid for by charitable donations.
“If the system is fixed and unfair, then it needs to be broken,” Pharrell said in a press release according to The Virginian Pilot. “We don’t want lockstep learning where so many kids fall behind; we want bespoke learning designed for each child, where the things that make a child different are the same things that will make a child rise up and take flight.”
Pharrell chose Norfolk for the school because of its history of housing segregation and the city’s plans to redevelop three public housing complexes. Yellowhab is also designed to group students by skill level rather than grade with a curriculum that gives priority to STEAM — science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The school will open on September 7 and families can apply for enrollment on July 1 through Yellowhab’s website.

IDK Shows Off His Falsetto Voice In A Cover Of Pharrell’s ‘Frontin’
There’s no doubt that DMV rapper IDK is one of the more talented artists to make his mark in the hip-hop space over the past few years. He impressed with his major-label debut album, Is He Real? at the end of 2019, and since then he’s delivered a consistent streak of quality music, with his sophomore album, U See 4 Yourself, poised to keep that run going. But before that drops, IDK took a moment to show off his singing abilities in a silky smooth cover of Pharrell and Jay-Z’s 2003 track “Frontin.”
IDK debuted the cover with a black and white video, which sees him dressed up to the nines surrounded by back-up singers and violinists, all while he lets his falsetto voice fly.
The new take of “Frontin” is just one of many tracks that IDK has delivered in recent months. Earlier this week he joined Deante Hitchcock and Flatbush Zombies for a remix of Spillage Village’s “Baptize,” which arrived after his hard-banging track “Just Like Martin.” IDK also appeared on Pooh Shiesty’s viral track “Back In Blood,” with a devastating freestyle.
Check out the “Frontin” cover in the video above.
