Peloton Partners with NBA and WNBA as Official Fitness Partner

Peloton, a leader in the fitness industry, has forged a multi-year partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). In this collaboration, Peloton will become the official fitness partner of both the NBA and WNBA.

One of the most significant aspects of this partnership is the integration of NBA League Pass, the NBA’s premium live game subscription service, into Peloton’s new Entertainment hub. Peloton members will be able to stream live and on-demand NBA games on compatible devices during the 2023-24 NBA season. It’s a pioneering initiative that enhances the Peloton experience for fitness enthusiasts and sports fans alike.

Peloton will also develop NBA- and WNBA-themed fitness classes, offering its members a unique and immersive fitness experience. In the future, the collaboration plans to unveil WNBA-focused initiatives as the league approaches its 2024 season.

“Peloton Members are NBA and WNBA fans, and this collaboration is going to bring amazing content and experiences to them and all fans of both leagues,” said Leslie Berland, Chief Marketing Officer of Peloton. “We have a shared goal to inspire and connect people through fitness, sport and community — we’re excited to join forces and achieve exactly that.”

“Peloton is the ideal partner to tip off the launch of NBA Fitness, our new platform to engage our fans’ affinity for health and wellness,” said Scott Kaufman-Ross, Senior Vice President, Head of Gaming & New Business Ventures, NBA.  “We look forward to leveraging Peloton’s leadership in the space as we create co-branded fitness classes with both the NBA and WNBA, bring original content to the NBA App and make NBA League Pass available on Peloton devices.”

Additionally, Peloton will introduce “NBA Fitness,” a digital content initiative within the NBA App. This initiative will provide a wealth of health and fitness content, drawing on the NBA’s extensive network of trainers, coaches, and health experts. The content will cover areas such as strength and conditioning, basketball skills, recovery, nutrition, and mental wellness.

Fans can look forward to a dynamic fusion of fitness and basketball through this partnership, strengthening the bond between Peloton, the NBA, and the WNBA.

The integration of NBA League Pass into Peloton’s platform is set to debut during the 2023-24 NBA season. Updates on the launch timing will be shared through Peloton and NBA social channels in the coming weeks.

Peloton Is Being Sued For Using Unlicensed Cypress Hill Songs

You’d think Peloton would have figured out their music licensing rights deals by now. Considering the company has partnered with Beyoncé, Eminem, and David Bowie’s estate in the recent past, streaming music to play alongside their cycling workout programs ought to be a fairly straightforward setup, just as it is with any streaming service: The music gets used and royalty payment gets paid out to the copyright owners. Well, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill and his company Soul Assassins Inc., Peloton has been using Cypress Hill’s music and not paying for the rights to do so.

“Peloton’s use of [the songs] in its work-out videos without a license from Soul Assassins is an outrageous, willful infringement because Peloton was sued by a group of music publishers in March of 2019 for doing the exact same thing,” DJ Muggs’ lawyers wrote, in a court document obtained by Billboard. “Clearly […] Peloton knew unequivocally that it had no right to use any musical composition in its exercise videos without first obtaining a license for one hundred percent of the song.”

The 2019 claim cited above, is in reference to a $150 million suit filed by the NMPA, claiming that Peloton was using music by artists like Drake, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, and more, without securing the exclusive rights to do so. Now, Muggs claims that Peloton has used Cypress Hill tracks including “Insane In The Brain” and “Rap (Superstar)” without permission.

How Peloton is not locked into licensing deals the way TikTok or even Spotify are, is a bit mind-boggling. This feels similar to when podcasts were (and still regularly do) receiving takedown notices en masse for using songs without permission. Spotify as a podcast platform found a way to pay out royalties to those rights holders via their existing streaming agreements. It would serve Peloton well to enter into a partnership with a streaming service who can clear the usage rights for them so they don’t have to keep going on the defensive for what are very pricey lawsuits. Until then, Muggs and Soul Assassins Inc. are having none of it.

“Peloton is a textbook willful infringer,” the claim states. “Peloton fully understood what the copyright law required, having entered into sync licenses with certain other copyright holders, while trampling the rights of Plaintiffs by using their musical works for free and without permission.”

Eminem Partners With Peloton To Host A Boxing Class Set To His Music

Look, say what you want about Eminem‘s late-career output, but one thing the man does still do well is creating the perfect gym playlist music. So, he’s probably the perfect artist to join Peloton’s Artist Series, unleashing his catalog for artist-specific workouts such as “Eminem Core Strength,” “Eminem Thunder 45,” and “Eminem Bike Bootcamp.” In addition, though, the boxing enthusiast will be hosting a boxing class, as he announced on his Twitter feed.

Eminem’s classes will just be the start of Peloton’s planned boxing programming, which the company is offering free to new members for two months. According to Peloton’s press release, “The Peloton Eminem Artist Series Kicks off on January 28 with a special one-night Boxing event,” with three live boxing classes which will all be released for replay on-demand afterward. Then, throughout the weekend, a series of live cycling and other training classes with the platform’s roster of trainers will premiere featuring Em’s most motivational tunes.

Eminem’s interest in boxing has been evident throughout his career, with his song “Phenomenal” appearing on the soundtrack of the Antoine Fuqua boxing drama Southpaw — in which Em was at one point set to star. You can see a full class schedule on Peloton’s site.

Beyonce Joins Forces With Peloton For An Upcoming Ivy Park Line

Beyonce is preparing for another release through her beloved line Ivy Park, and it sees her partnering with Peloton, the popular fitness company. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the upcoming line includes lifestyle and performance footwear and apparel in neon, olive, and black colors. In total, 29 pieces will be available, including T-shirts, bike shorts, tights, sports bras, shorts, windbreaks, and cropped hoodies. She’s also releasing the IVP Ultrapack, a unisex sneaker that will be sold in sizes 4 to 14.

The line will be available on the Adidas website, in physical stores, and on the Peloton e-commercial sites on November 10. Prices for the apparel will range from $45 to $200 while IVP Utrapack shoes are priced at $200. She also shared a campaign video for the upcoming drop on her Instagram page.

Beyonce teamed with Peloton nearly a year ago for a multi-year partnership benefiting HBCUs, which gave two-year Peloton Digital memberships to students at ten HBCUs: Bennett College, Clark Atlanta University, Grambling State University, Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine, Spelman College, Texas Southern University, and Wilberforce University. Students were thus granted access to a library of fitness classes on the Peloton app. In a press release, the fitness company also promised to “build on its relationships with each of these schools to pursue long-term recruiting partnerships at both the internship and undergraduate levels.”

IDK Announces His Second Album ‘USee4Yourself’ With His Exuberant New Single, ‘Peloton’

The wait for IDK’s upcoming sophomore album has gone on for a year and a half. It tracks back to the release of his major-label debut album Is He Real? at the end of 2019. However, over this duration, the DMV rapper made the wait for album No. 2 fairly easy thanks to his 2020 project, IDK & Friends 2, as well as a boatload of singles that all proved IDK only sharpened his rap skills. Thankfully, good things come to those that wait as IDK finally shared a release date for his sophomore album, titled USee4Yourself, with his new single, “Peloton.”

The track begins with a sample of UGK and Outkast’s classic song, “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)” as IDK raps the first line of his song in the same tune that Andre 3000 did on the 2007 song. “Peloton,” which begins with soulful vocals that sit behind IDK’s raps, sees a quick switch up that brings a jolt of energy to the track as IDK flexes some muscle after a woman labels him as the one for her.

Along with the song, IDK confirmed that USee4Yourself will arrive on July 9, leaving just a few weeks until the project and its 17 songs land in the hands of listeners.

You can press play on the song in the video above.

USee4Yourself is out 7/9 via Clue No Clue/Warner Records. Pre-order it here.
