Questlove Got Emotional Accepting His Best Documentary Oscar For ‘Summer Of Soul’

Chris Rock was supposed to present the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature at the 94th Academy Awards last night. He did do that, but that wasn’t the takeaway from his time on stage, given that after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith got on stage and slapped him.

After the incident, though, Rock did manage to present the award, giving it to Questlove’s film Summer Of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised). In an already emotionally charged atmosphere, Questlove (who shook Smith’s hand and hugged him on his way to the stage) gave an acceptance speech, in which he too got emotional.

Pausing on multiple occasions, Questlove said:

“It’s not lost on me that the Harlem Cultural Festival should have been something that my beautiful mother… and my dad… should have taken me to when I was 5 years old, and… This is such a stunning moment for me right now. But this is not about me. This is about marginalized people in Harlem that needed to heal from pain. And just know that in 2022, this is not just a 1969 story about marginalized people in Harlem. This is a story of… I’m sorry, I’m just overwhelmed right now. I’m going to get myself together and thank everyone properly when I get off stage. […] I’m so happy right now, I could cry. Thank you.”

During a recent Late Night With Seth Meyers interview, Questlove noted the success of the movie has exceeded his expectations, saying, “At least I know with music what a goal is, but with the movie world, I just had no clue. I just wanted to make something really cool and hopefully they were gonna show it in a few classrooms, and then maybe discover it 20 years from now, like, ‘Yo, you know Questlove did this thing?’”

Diddy Claims That Will Smith And Chris Rock Settled Their Beef After The Oscars Ceremony: ‘It’s All Love… They’re Brothers’

In case you haven’t been online for the past 12 hours, what will certainly go down as one of the year’s defining pop culture events happened last night. While on stage to present the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature at the 94th Academy Awards last night, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Will Smith, her husband, didn’t take kindly to the jab, so he got on stage, slapped Rock in the face pretty hard on live television, returned to his seat, and screamed twice, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth!”

It was a surreal moment and now we’re left with the aftermath. On that note, it appears Rock and Smith have settled their differences and moved on: Diddy, who was in attendance, told Page Six, “That’s not a problem. That’s over. I can confirm that.” The publication noted he did not elaborate on how the two had reconciled but continued, “It’s all love. They’re brothers.”

This comes after Page Six reported, citing “sources at the Academy Awards,” that Diddy talked to both Rock and Smith and that the two had “agreed to make amends later in the evening.” Later, Smith showed up to Vanity Fair‘s Oscars party, while Rock did not, as Page Six notes. They also said of the scene, “Smith arrived after midnight and headed to the dance floor. DJ D-Nice was spinning tunes and played a number of songs by Smith as a tribute when the star and his family arrived. Smith, 53, danced and rapped along to his ’90s hits ‘Summertime,’ Miami,’ and ‘Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It.’ Jada, 50, was by his side grooving on the dance floor, along with their kids Jaden, 23, and Willow, 21.”

Jaden Smith, 50 Cent, & Drake React After Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

It was the slap heard around the world.

Will Smith unexpectedly slapped Chris Rock at the 94th annual Academy Awards after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

In what was the most-talked-about moment at Sunday’s Oscars, the King Richard star rushed the stage after Rock joked about Smith’s wife and a sequel to the 1997 film G.I. Jane.

Jada, who has been open about her struggle with hair loss caused by alopecia, did not appear amused.

“Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me,” said a stunned Rock after Smith got out of his seat and ran on stage.

“Keep my wife’s name out your fu**in’ mouth!” Smith told Rock during the live broadcast, which was censored in most countries.

“Wow, dude,” Rock said. “It was a G.I. Jane joke.”

“Keep my wife’s name out your fu**in’ mouth,” Smith repeated.

“I’m going to, OK?” Rock said.

Moments later, Smith went on to win his first Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams in King Richard. During his emotional speech, he offered an apology.

“I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees,” he said. “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”

Added Smith, “Thank you. I hope the Academy invites me back.”

After the wild moment, which Rock called the “greatest night in the history of television,” Smith’s son Jaden shared a message of support for his dad. “And That’s How We Do It,” he tweeted.

Others including 50 Cent, Drake, and Boosie Badazz also weighed in.

Beyoncé Opens 2022 Oscars with ‘Be Alive’

Beyoncé served up an electrifying performance to kick off the 94th annual Academy Awards.

Following an introduction from Venus and Serena Williams, Queen Bey performed her Oscar-nominated song “Be Alive” live from the Compton tennis courts. The satellite performance opened with the young actresses who played Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard, Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, walking the streets of Compton where the Williams sisters grew up.

Dressed in tennis ball green against a matching backdrop on the palm tree-lined courts, Bey and her all-female dancers got in formation, while joined by an orchestra with neon green-clad instruments.

“Oscars, I want you to tell these people where we are,” said Bey before chanting, “City of Compton!” in an homage to Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.’”

The performance capped off with a surprise cameo from Blue Ivy, who joined her mother in the final moments. “It felt so good to be alive / Got all my sisters by my side,” sang Bey as her 10-year-old daughter sat in front of her.

Beyoncé received her first Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “Be Alive” from King Richard, which is nominated alongside “Dos Oruguitas” (Lin-Manuel Miranda), “Down to Joy” (Van Morrison), “No Time to Die” (Billie Eilish & Finneas O’Connell), and “Somehow You Do” (Diane Warren).

This marks Bey’s third Oscar performance. In 2007, she sang a Dreamgirls medley alongside Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose and joined host Hugh Jackman in a montage celebrating movie musicals in 2009.

Travis Scott’s First Performance Since The Astroworld Festival Tragedy Came During A Pre-Oscars Party

It’s been four months since the tragedy that occurred in Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival. It resulted in ten deaths and hundreds of injuries, and for the most part since then, Travis has kept a rather low profile. He’s made few appearances in the public in the months that followed and he’s also done his best to help the families of the victims and give back to the community as a whole. An example of the latter is his recently announced Project HEAL which listed a number of community-based initiatives he plans to put in motion. However, as of late, Travis has been stepping out a bit more.

A recent example of that came during a pre-Oscars party on Saturday where Travis delivered his first performance since the Astroworld tragedy. According to Rolling Stone, Travis performed a small set at the private party, playing songs like “Sicko Mode” and more. The event took place in Bel Air, California and it features a star-studded guest list that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Venus and Serena Williams, YG, Tobey Maguire, and more.

Travis’ performance at the private party came after he and longtime girlfriend Kylie Jenner had their second child together. They initially revealed that the baby boy’s name was Wolf Jacques Webster, with Jacques being Travis’ legal first name. However, a month later, Kylie announced that they would be changing their son’s name because they “didn’t feel like it was him.”
