Today In Hip Hop History: Mobb Deep’s Prodigy Passed Away Seven Years Ago

prodigy

Born November 2, 1974, Albert Johnson, better known as Prodigy of Mobb Deep, was not only a rapper; but an author and an entrepreneur. Today, we recognize not only the day he passed and transitioned, but we celebrate the life and career of one of Hip Hop’s most gifted talents, and for sure one of the most recognizable voices of the genre.

Who can forget the 1995 Sophomore Album “The Infamous”? Which featured one of the illest tracks in Hip Hop History; “Shook One’s”. It’s safe to say that it was this album that catapulted not only Prodigy to superstardom, but his group mate Havoc as well. Cementing them as one of the top duos in the history of the genre.

There are so many noteworthy songs to choose from as we honor the life of Prodigy. From “Shook One’s”(Pt2) to Survival OF The Fittest. From the “I Shot Ya” Remix feat L.L. Cool J feat. Keith Murray, Prodigy, Fat Joe and Foxy Brown, to my personal favorite “Eye For An Eye”(Your Beef Is Mines) feat Nas and Raekwon.

“When I said, “I’m only 19, but my mind is old”- at that time, when I said that line, I was 18” – Prodigy

The legendary lyricist ran into a few legal snags that ultimately led to Prodigy becoming more aware of the imbalance in our justice system. In March of 2011, Prodigy was released from Mid-State Correctional Facility, in Marcy, NY after serving three years on a criminal charge for weapons possession. A term where he saw 6 months shaved off his sentence for good behavior.

“You have people there from all walks of life: people who made mistakes and have to deal with the consequences, mothers and fathers. You wouldn’t expect them to be behind bars.”

Prodigy often spoke of issue of injustice and the shattered relationship between African Americans and the police department’s hired to work our communities. But it was his stance on prison life that had to be his strongest due to existing health issues.

“I couldn’t afford to get sick in prison. My sickle cell is no joke, so I couldn’t eat poorly or not exercise. And everything in jail is designed to do the exact opposite”

Prodigy was not only an elite rapper. But a reputable author as well. The Queens, NY native published several books during his career. Including, My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deeps Prodigy, in 2012. Other titles include – H.N.I.C: An Infamous Novella (2013) as well as a publication that surprised fans for sure; The 2016 publication, Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook.

In an interview with Vibe Magazine in November 2000, Prodigy spoke about what inspired him to directly address his life long battle with sickle-cell anemia on the song “You Can Never Feel My Pain”. Which was featured on H.N.I.C.

In a statement, Prodigy gave fans insight to his disease and what he intended on doing to spread awareness. “I have a deadly disease called Sickle Cell Anemia that I was born with that affects millions of others – primarily in the Black and Latino cultures. I feel I can inspire others with this Sickle Cell disease to be strong and believe in themselves”

Unfortunately on the morning of June 20th, 2017, Prodigy was found unresponsive by medical staff after being admitted to Spring Valley Medical Center.  He was transported to the facility after suffering a significant medical episode occurring from his life-long battle with sickle-cell anemia. It was documented that the rapper passed from “accidental choking”.

Whether it was through his published work as an author, speaking publicly on health and issues facing the black community, or simply blessing us with his rugged tone on painful tracks; Prodigy will undoubtedly live on as one of our generations leading voices on wax. A voice that will inspire many for years and decades to come.

Today in Hip Hop History: Eric B. And Rakim Dropped The ‘Let the Rhythm Hit Em’ LP 34 Years Ago

The G.O.A.T. and his accomplice Eric B. dropped their third album 33 years ago today

On this date in 1990, DJ Eric B. and Hip Hop’s number one microphone fiend Rakim dropped LP number three entitled Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em.

One of our most coveted Five Mic classics, Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em’s production was started by legendary behind the boardsman Paul C, however, because of his untimely passing, the baton was passed to his then-young protege, Large Professor. This was the foundation that led to the extensive catalog that Extra P has today, even though neither Large Professor of Paul C received credit on the album’s notes.

Songs such as the title track, “Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em,” satisfied most of Ra’s lyrical critics, who were still looking for the R to have a repeat performance of their debut album, Paid In Full. Tracks such as “Mahogany” proved Rakim’s storytelling ability, while “In The Ghetto” reminded his fans and listeners of the origin of his greatness and many other Hip Hop artists like him.

This album is definitely a time capsule piece of the Golden Era, and The Source salutes both Eric B. and Rakim for this timeless gem!

Webbie’s DJ Commits Murder-Suicide, Called Working For Him A “Living Hell”

webbie

Reports from Powder Springs, Georgia has confirmed that Webbie’s DJ killed his wife and himself, but not before sharing what seemed like a long suicide note detailing his never-ending issues working with the Louisiana rapper.

On Sunday (June 9), two bodies were discovered by police after shots were reported in the neighborhood. The information about who the victims were was not immediately released, however, on June 13, Powder Springs Police Department gave a statement about the identities of the deceased.

“I can confirm that Notorius Brown died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds after killing Kalisha Seddens-Dunn,” confirmed Captain J.W. Holcombe. “I am being told that he went by that name [T Gutta] when performing.”

Brown, who went by the name “DJ T Gutta”, made a lengthy, but emotional post on Facebook with his gripes about working with Webby, which was posted just hours before the police discovered the bodies of Brown and Dunn.

“Dawg DJin for Webbie is a living hell!” he wrote. “1st That n-gga don’t want to pay. Then that n-gga don’t want to see nobody around him shine! Like nobody not even his own brother.. Why y’all think everybody left from around him? I was only supposed to be his tour DJ but i had to be a driver, a dr, a security, a PR, a babysitter, booking Agent, a referee, a counselor, a road manger, and a list of other things.”

“But yet this n-gga didn’t appreciate none of it. I did all that shit with a smile on my face in front of thousands every night, but i was dying inside. All the times he had seizures on the planes, on stages in the hotels, who y’all think was there? Me! Becuz his family ain’t wanna deal with him, or nobody on our team wanted to deal with him but me! Our driver quit cuz he ain’t wanna pay him. Then every time we would try to make our money in other ways he always found a way to stop that too.”

“So it’s like he don’t wanna pay but don’t want us eating nowhere else. Then the n-gga wanna get mad & in his feelings when Boosie need us to help him. The n-gga a straight hater! I can’t remember how many times he’s told me he don’t want nobody blowing up off his name! That’s why he don’t do features! & he don’t like taking pictures with other artist or fans. N-gga think they tryna get shine off him.”

He added, “It was days i straight dreaded going on tour with him. The n-gga complains about everything! Being around him is like having to take care of my kids! We had to remind him everyday to take his medicine, or to not do some stupid shit. The n-gga would do some stupid kiddie shit & be like ‘Gutta record me doing this’ And the shit will never get better becuz his Brother Derrick (SupaUnit) just makes excuses for him even tho he be mad he don’t pay him either.”

“The shit on the road was so bad our long time manager had a stroke an all, then the producer for Savage Life 6 had a brain aneurysm or something in that nature becuz he was stressed an all, Webbie wanted him to produce the whole album but not pay & didn’t wanna do the split sheets or nothing. N-gga say ‘it’s my songs i should get all the money. And yes he has a health issue that causes him to have seizures but the get 10x worse when he snort dat dope! He gotta be the worse artist to dj for. Yes i DJ’d for him for 10 yrs but i was always hoping it would get better. Or another major artist would recognize my talent. But he blocked everything.”

“I never asked dude for shit. I came around with my own everything! That Supa Unit shit is the biggest piece of bullshit. That shit is only designed so Derrick can get paid while everybody else do the work! He promises to help artist but never do. It was some good times but it was more bad times than anything. I never in my life met somebody that complained more than him! The nigga straight up miserable.”

Former LAPD Detective Claims Diddy Ordered $1M Hit On 2Pac And Suge Knight

Screenshot 2024 06 13 at 9.21.08 AM

More allegations continue to mount against Bad Boy Records founder Diddy, as a former LAPD detective who was involved in the Tupac and Biggie murder investigations recently spoke to The New York Times and says that Duane “Keefe D’ Davis accused Diddy of ordering a hit on ‘Pac and Suge Knight back in 1995.

Greg Kading says that he remembered Davis accusing Diddy of ordering a hit on 2Pac, as well as Suge Knight, back in 1995. Kading said that Keefe D told him about a meeting held in a hotel room during a Summer Jam tour, allegedly telling a room full of “Crips”, he wanted them dead. Kdaing said he also remembered Davis saying that he was offered $1 million for the murders from Mr. Combs himself.

“Man, we’ll wipe their a— out quick,” Davis allegedly replied.

The next year, both Tupac and Suge Knight were shot on the Las Vegas strip after Shakur and the Death Row team got into a physical altercation with Keefe D’s nephew, Orlando Anderson at the MGM before the Mike Tyson fight. Knight suffered a graze wound to the head in the drive-by shooting, but Shakur succumbed to his injuries less than a week after the shooting. He was 25 years old.

In his 2019 book, Compton Street Legend, Davis claimed that he had a gun before searching the city for 2Pac and Knight. Ultimately, he admitted to giving the gun to his nephew. He alleged that Anderson went on to shoot 2Pac four times, ultimately taking his life.

Davis is set for trial for the murder of Shakur in Las Vegas this month.

Kanye West Says He’s “Justified” In Firing Of Security For Not Cutting His Locs

Kanye West George Floyd

Yeezy is defending his choice to fire an ex-employee, saying he was “justified” in canning a former security guard for not cutting off his locs as a term of employment.

Benjamin Deshon Provo, a former guard at the Donda Academy, filed a lawsuit against West for an unjust and racially motivated termination back in April. New documents obtained by In Touch Weekly yesterday(June 12) state that West and his legal team are looking to have the suit dismissed, denying all of Provo’s claims.

“Defendants are informed and believe, and based on such information and belief allege that Defendants were justified in doing any and/or all of the acts alleged in the Complaint,” the response reads.

“Ye contends that he had not “authorized, directed or ratified any alleged wrongful behavior” and that his decision to terminate the employee were “undertaken in the good-faith exercise of a legitimate business purpose.” West’s attorneys also allege that Provo “unreasonably failed to utilize, take advantage of, and/or comply with Defendants’ complaint/accommodation procedures.”

Court docs filed in L.A. Superior Court back in April claim that Provo suffered “severe emotional distress” as a result of West’s behavior. Provo also claims that Yeezy would ridicule Black employees who sported locs and says that it was done because of his Muslim faith.

“Kanye and members of his management team subjected Provo and other black employees to less favorable treatment than their white counterparts,” the lawsuit states. “Specifically, Kanye frequently screamed at and berated black employees, while in contrast, he never so much as raised his tone of voice toward white staff.”

West has requested that the lawsuit be thrown out and his attorney fees handled, but the judge has yet to make that ruling.

Provo has not listed any specific amount in damages in his lawsuit.
