Today in Hip-Hop History: Jay-Z Dropped Debut Album ‘Reasonable Doubt’ 28 Years Ago

On June 25, 1996, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Dame Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke embarked on a creative journey that has morphed into a billion-dollar movement today with the release of the Reasonable Doubt LP.

Released courtesy of their independent Roc-A-Fella imprint, Jay’s premier album was promoted and sanctioned by the streets, with previews of the album via sampler cassettes hitting the streets in the winter of 1995. The album’s first single, “Ain’t No Nigga”, featuring a then-teenage Foxy Brown, was the introduction of “Jigga” to the industry that would eventually put him in the pole position of the rap game.

Other unforgettable tracks from one of the prototype LPs of the “mafia rap” era include, “Dead Presidents II,” “Can’t Knock The Hustle,” which features Mary J. Blige, “Brooklyn’s Finest” with the late Notorious B.I.G. and the introduction of Marcy young gun Memphis Bleek on “Coming Of Age”.

All-star production from the likes of DJ Premier, Irv Gotti, Ski and Clark Kent propelled the album along with Jay’s common street ethics surgically placed melodically on the beats.

Salute to Jay, Biggs, Dame, Pain In Da Ass and the rest of the old Roc-A-Fella staff for this timeless classic!

Hot on the heels of her recent triumph, the star-studded collaboration “Wanna Be (Remix)” featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B, GloRilla is on a winning streak. First unveiled at Megan and Glo’s tour stop at Madison Square Garden last month, the trio’s dynamic performance and Cardi’s powerful verse catapulted the remix to the top of the charts, solidifying it as the official anthem for the summer. “Wanna Be” initially debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and with this star-studded remix, it has surged back into the top 15, a testament to GloRilla’s status as one of the genre’s top hitmakers. This week, Glo will conclude the domestic leg of Megan Thee Stallion’s Hot Girl Summer Tour, following a string of unforgettable shows in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Glo’s hometown of Memphis.

Ice Cube recently appeared on SiriusXM’s Flavor of the Week hosted by Flavor Flav. During the interview, Ice Cube shared that he is working on another Friday movie and revealed his favorite record he made.

When the Public Enemy hypeman asked Cube about the new Friday flick, the movie producer/director said, “Yep. We finally got, we finally, you know, got some traction with Warner Brothers. They have new leadership. My man, Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first “Friday” and “Players Club” and “All About the Benjamins.” You know, Mike DeLuca was there, so now he’s running Warner Brothers and he’s like, you know, him and my man Michael Gruber. It was like, “Yo, what the fuck is going on with Friday? Man, let’s get this back online,” and, you know, I was a little hot ’cause they had took so long because, you know, John Witherspoon passed away. Tiny passed away. A.J. Johnson passed away, so I’m like, “Man, we keep losing people and y’all keep dicking around not doing the movie the way it need to be done.” They want to do it, but the key is it gotta be done, Flav or we shouldn’t fuck with it, you know?”

The Microphone Fiend and his silent cohort drop their fourth and final album together on this date.

On this hot summer day in 1992, Rakim, who is widely recognized by some as the greatest MC of all time, released his fourth studio LP with William “Eric B.” Barrier entitled Don’t Sweat The Technique. This was the long-awaited follow-up to Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em, which was a critically acclaimed album, but that was not reflective in record sales.

This album was also the last LP that Eric B. & Rakim recorded together as a duo. Produced by Eric B. with some production assistance from an up-and-coming producer by the name of Large Professor, Don’t Sweat The Technique solidified Rakim as THE best lyricist in Hip Hop.

Tracks such as “What’s On Your Mind”, which appeared on the House Party II soundtrack, “Know The Ledge”(theme from Juice), and the title track are eternal lyrical masterpieces that are unparalleled to this day. Even songs like “Casualties Of War” depicting the mentality of a conscious Black male during the era of Operation Desert Storm and the war in Iraq were instructive as well as entertaining, while virtually predicting the 9/11 tragedy almost a decade before it happened.

Salute to Rakim Allah and Eric B. for this classic album!
