Kid Cudi “INSANO” Album Review

Man on the Moon III: The Chosen (2020) was a great full-circle moment for Kid Cudi. He emulated Travis Scott (for whom he is a massive influence) and came through with psych-trap bangers, plus a versatile and emotionally powerful set of Cudder-style cuts. Unfortunately, on the Cleveland native’s ninth solo studio album and final Republic Records offering, INSANO, this experiment repeats itself with less exciting results, more filler, and an overall missing vision that usually ties his projects together seamlessly.

While he framed this album as a dedication to his OG fanbase, this sounds like more catering to the contemporary popular sounds in hip-hop that he helped innovate. However, this is no empty desert: Mr. Rager still delivers a handful of tracks worthy of his celebrated discography. But perhaps INSANO‘s biggest flaw is how it’s a pick-and-choose experience rather than a fulfilling front-to-back package.

What Makes INSANO Work?

If you’re a big fan of Kid Cudi’s hypnotic, dreamy, often cavernous, and entrancing style, or that of the artists he influences, then there’s a great chance you’ll like INSANO. “OFTEN, I HAVE THESE DREAMS,” “ELECTROWAVEBABY” (which got a Ye “co-sign”), “BLUE SKY,” and certain choruses, flows, and themes on other tracks are classic Cudi all the way. These are among the cuts that cohesively mesh his influences of hip-hop, pop, indie, and electronic, and this breaks up the track flow in the most engaging ways. “FRESHIE” also provides excellent flows and a structurally distinct song in comparison to the others, whereas “TORTURED” and “FUNKY WIZARD SMOKE” provide a strong focus on despondence and perseverance, respectively.

At first glance, or listening to any track out of context, there are always signs and displays of what makes Kid Cudi so great. Clean, crisp, but impactful production, engaging melodies across songs, carefree lyricism, emotional honesty and range, and an overall healing factor. On that last point, this is probably the 39-year-old’s most joyful album. INSANO starts with more bangers and slowly morphs into more mellow fare, but there’s a catch. By the time we finally leave the psych-trap lane in the tracklist, we’ve heard two or three of these records too many.

Where Did Kid Cudi Miss The Mark?

While INSANO represents the WZRD artist’s talents across the board, listening from top to bottom can be repetitive, vapid, and messy. He’s always had jumbled and choppy flows, but these instrumentals require a strong melodic and structural focus that these performances never capture. “KEEP BOUNCING,” “A TALE OF A KNIGHT,” and “CUD LIFE” are examples of tracks that come and go with minimal impact. In addition, with few instances of memorable wordplay or phrasing, detailed narratives, or strong hooks, there’s little to latch onto emotionally and lyrically beyond the basic descriptions we’ve heard so much in Kid Cudi’s catalog. There are only so many times we can hear about blunts, baddies, fast cars, and being better than all the haters he claims not to care about.

Even the professional-grade production is too limited in terms of psych-trap aesthetics and structure. Beats like “MOST AIN’T DENNIS” and “FRESHIE” are amazing, but they’re sonically not that different from the mostly passable and largely static pack of instrumentals here. Many of these songs needed more fleshing out and development to materialize fully, and to distinguish themselves from others. Meanwhile, the features range from very good to average, and most of them are too short to stun. A$AP Rocky shines on “WOW,” Kid Cudi goes back and forth with Travis Scott and Young Thug on “GET OFF ME” and “RAGER BOYZ” respectively, and Lil Wayne provides a brief but fun set of bars on “SEVEN.” Lil Yachty’s vibrato does its thing on “TOO DAMN HIGH,” Pharrell’s okay on “AT THE PARTY,” and the XXXTENTACION sample is well-treated. Alas, they don’t astonish.

What’s Next For Mr. Rager?

Kid Cudi INSANO Review Hip Hop News

Overall, INSANO feels like Kid Cudi just having fun for an hour, but without the focus and intent to translate that experience compellingly. With a deluxe on the way and his career in limbo thanks to possible retirement (though he’s by no means slowing down beyond music), it’s hard to tell where he’ll go next. Still, there is one reason why this album should be celebrated that has nothing to do with its quality. Scott Mescudi’s been through a lot: the loss of a father, mental health struggles, addiction, and the constant criticism, doubt, attacks, and misunderstanding perceptions that have plagued him throughout his career.

For this album, we can’t say we don’t see where the haters are coming from. Yet despite his overbearing references to them, it feels like he is happier and healthier than ever, allowing himself to bask in this blessing and triumph while still speaking on his demons. As such, INSANO may not reach the standards Kid Cudi set for himself, but it does represent personal growth and peace that no project’s acclaim could amount to. So while this attempt was neither great nor terrible, we’ll always be excited for whatever he does next, whether as the artist we grew to love or as the influential, multi-disciplinary creative he always knew he’d become.

Armand Hammer Announce New Vinyl-Only Album

For big fans of billy woods and Elucid, there’s a chance to get some new music soon. The duo, who rap together as Armand Hammer, just announced a quick follow-up album to last year’s We Buy Diabetic Test Strips. The critically acclaimed project will be succeeded by a new album called BLK LBL. The project has some impressive collaborators with features from Dreamcrusher and Zeroh. It also has production credits from JPEGMAFIA, Aesop Rock, and DJ Haram. The album was announced by the Twitter account of their label Backwoodz Studioz, but there’s a catch.

Fans looking to hear BLK LBL will only have one way to get their hands on the songs. The album is exclusively available on vinyl and it’s only being sold at upcoming Armand Hammer shows. The duo’s label confirmed that the record won’t appear on streaming and that there are no plans to make it available for purchase on Bandcamp. While they did suggest that it would be made available at select pop-ups for fans who can’t make a show, that still makes it a pretty rare find. The record doesn’t have a specific release date but fans are expecting it to start popping up at live shows soon. Check out the tracklist and announcement post below.

Playboi Carti Continues His Run With Demonic Single “EVILJ0RDAN”

Playboi Carti is easily one of the most anticipated artists of 2024. Overall, fans want his album to drop as soon as possible. However, Carti knows how to tease fans and leave them wanting more. Since the end of 2023, he has been periodically delivering new singles for fans to listen to. For instance, he came through with songs like “H00DBYAIR,” “UR THE MOON,” and “2024.” Furthermore, at the start of the year, he came out with “BACKR00MS” which features Travis Scott.

Today, Carti revealed that he would be coming through with yet another song. This is his fifth single as part of this rollout, and no one knew what to expect. Well, at 9:30 PM EST, Carti took to his Opium Instagram account and dropped a song called “EVILJ0RDAN.” Upon hearing the beat to the song, you will quickly realize this is the infamous DJ Swamp Izzo snippet that came out long before “UR THE MOON” was even on anyone’s radar. Fans have wanted this song for quite some time, and they finally got their wish.

As you will hear, this track comes complete with some demonic production that is going to capture your attention. Unknown T Delivers Some Catchy Rhythms On “Blood Diamond”

UK drill is a subgenre that continues to be immensely popular. Rappers from the area that have transformed from a more niche audience to a global sound is quite vast. A couple of them that have been at the top of that list as of late include Dave and Central Cee. Their “Sprinter” hit from the summer of 2023 took over the charts and the radio. However artists like Unknown T deserve some more credit.

He has worked with some incredible talent on both the production and artistry side. Additionally, Unknown has also been releasing music for about the same amount of time as Cee and Dave. Furthermore, Unknown T is someone who likes to bring some different approaches to drill. His production choices are not always so heavy on the 808s and bass.

Bruiser Wolf Is Wildly Zany On “My Story Got Stories” Album

Danny Brown made a great comeback at the tail end of 2023. He came through with his first solo album in four years with Quaranta. It was a follow up to his 2012 record XXX to show how much he has gone through in his life in the last 10 years. The project had tons of standouts on it, including Y.B.P. with Bruiser Wolf.

On top of Brown’s solo work, he is also working more often with his label, Bruiser Brigade. Bruiser Wolf is one of his talents he is working up and he also hails from Detroit like Danny. Wolf shares more than just a hometown, though. His style is very experimental and underground. His cadence and flows are nowhere near conventional.

Listen To My Story Got Stories By Bruiser Wolf

His influences are clear on My Story Got Stories, his second project in a very spare career. Bruiser Wolf also emanates E-40 with the sporadicity in his delivery. One of the wildest moments on the record has to be “2 Bad” with Danny and Zelooperz. He combines the beats from DMX’s “Party Up” and “1Train” by A$AP Rocky. It works out suprisingly well and is one you need to hear for yourself. If you looking for something outside the box, check out Wolf’s tape.

K CAMP Finally Returns With New LP “Float 2 London”

Over the past year or so Wisconsin rapper and singer K CAMP has dealt with a lot of things in his personal life. Almost one year ago to the day, comments about him falling off surfaced. Of course, CAMP heard them and had this to say about it. “Don’t no artist wanna hear that they fell off. But you got to understand, what’s the definition of falling off. N****s use that term so loosely. Falling off to me is f****d up somewhere under a bridge with no paper, with a box saying: ‘Can I get some food?’ That’s falling off.”

On top of that, K CAMP was dealing with a scary vocal chord surgery. Luckily it was not life-threatening. Nonetheless, it was another obstacle that got in the way of him building out his career. These could be reasons why it took almost two years between his newest project, Float 2 London, and Vibe Forever.

6ix9ine Drops New EP “BLACKBALLED” Out Of The Blue

The rainbow-haired rapper is back in business. 6ix9ine, New York’s highly controversial musical figure, has just come by with a brand-new EP that no one saw coming. Outside of a couple of loose singles that land on it, BLACKBALLED had no rollout or announcement that it would be dropping. Perhaps with this tape, 6ix9ine is looking to get back into the spotlight.

It feels like forever ago that he was what everyone was talking about. Whether that be for his wacky songs or actions, 6ix9ine was always trending. He has mostly been in the headlines for his tumultuous relationship with Yailin la Mas Viral, a fellow artist. They have recently spilt and he even deactivated his Instagram for a short period. Interestingly, Tekashi still included some songs with her on the tape.

Speaking of the tape, your not going to hear anything different from him. The formula is the same. Loud beats with shouty flows. His music is perfect for quick jolt of energy. 6ix9ine delivers on that front with it running around 19 minutes. The two singles that we mentioned earlier that are on this EP are “FEEFAFO” and “SHAKA LAKA.” If you want to revisit 6ix9ine’s music, check out the EP above.

Travis Scott Teases New Album

Travis Scott has claimed that he has been working on a new album while touring. “R U in my mind or what??” Scott wrote on X in response to a fan musing about a similar concept. Furthermore, Scott shared images of him posted up in a makeshift recording studio at what he claims is his recent Boston show. The news comes a day after Scott previewed a new track at an afterparty. The track had a slow, laid-back beat. Furthermore, it appeared to incorporate a sample of an eagle screech into the track before the vocals began. At this time, no other details about the song are available.

There are eight stops left on his Circus Maximus Tour, which has been ongoing since October 2023. Penn State, Milwaukee, St. Paul, Chicago, Columbus, Miami, and Orlando will also host tour stops across the rest of January. However, the tour will end with a February 3 show in St. Louis. Originally, the tour would have ended in Orlando. However, the January 3 show in St. Louis was rescheduled to the end of the tour.

Travis Scott Damages Stanley Cup

Meanwhile, Scott’s January 9 concert in Montreal reportedly went so hard that it damaged a Stanley Cup trophy displayed at the venue. According to Bell Center security, Scott’s recent show knocked three of the Canadiens’ 24 trophies off their displays. Later, fans noted that the 1923-24 trophy had been removed entirely, with security stating that it had been “damaged” and had been removed for repairs.

Elsewhere, December saw a pair of Air Jordans that Scott gave to a fan during Rolling Loud Germany recently sold for nearly $10,000 at auction. The shoes were sold through Goldin Auctions for $9760 after a 29-bid auction in December 2023. This saw the lot fall just shy of the $10,000 estimate Goldin had given it. Scott had gifted the shoes to an Egyptian fan after bringing the man up on stage. It was one of several impromptu clothing giveaways Scott did in his pre-Utopia festival circuit.

21 Savage “american dream” First-Week Sales Projections Are Here

21 Savage’s american dream landed with a huge splash as arguably the first massive release of 2024 for the hip-hop genre– and music at large, for that matter. Moreover, it marked his solo return following 2018’s i am > i was, a statement which may ring truer today than it ever has before. In between, the Atlanta trap icon also released SAVAGE MODE II with Metro Boomin (2020) and Her Loss with Drake (2022). So, why talk about these previous releases in his catalog if we’re all focused on the 15 tracks he just dropped yesterday? Well, it’s because we have american dream‘s first week sales projections courtesy of HDD (HITS Daily Double).

Furthermore, if this album continues the pace it’s at right now, it could mark 21 Savage’s biggest solo album debut ever. To elaborate, the publication estimated that american dream is on pace to sell 130K to 150K album-equivalent units in its first week. For comparison, his 2018 project sold 131K copies first-week, so it seems like he’s in a comfortable range to commercially best himself. Still, this is solo material; the “née-nah” MC’s collab projects in between his most recent solo full-lengths, SAVAGE MODE II and Her Loss, sold 171K copies and 404K copies, respectively.

21 Savage’s american dream‘s First Week Sales Projections, Plus His Previous Numbers

Regardless, american dream could very well debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts if it keeps up these numbers. But what do these sales matter at the end of the day when people just want 21 Savage to make the best music possible? Given that the album’s been out for less than 24 hours at press time, we’ll leave that debate open for another time. While there’s been plenty of positive reception and acclaim, some haters, and even potential disses on the LP against Gunna, all this conversation is still supplementary to how the record will age and perform throughout the year.

Meanwhile, there’s also the Slaughter Gang boss’ upcoming movie to think about, which will apparently star Donald Glover. Even though it would be amazing to see this biopic, it’s still a bit unclear whether its announcement was just a promo stunt for the album and nothing more. They did share a release date, so perhaps we’ll truly find out what’s up with it on July 4 this year. For more news and the latest updates on 21 Savage, check back in with HNHH.
