Kenny Mason Perfects His Moody Vibe On New Album “Angel Eyes”

Kenny Mason doesn’t make happy music. The rapper has developed a signature sound that is both weary and focused. He’s always locked in, but there’s a tiredness, and a cynicism, that informs even his most upbeat songs. It lends grit and authenticity to everything he does, and this continues to be the case on his new album, Angel Eyes. While not as ambitious in scope as Kenny Mason’s previous work, Angel Eyes gives him the opportunity to hone his craft and deliver some of his most atmospheric songs to date.

One needn’t look further than the album opener, “INTUITION,” for proof. A lengthy voicemail segues to a blaring breakbeat and a Kenny Mason verse in which he reflects on his childhood. It’s shockingly minimal in terms of musicality. All we hear are the drums, Mason’s voice, and a synth line that sounds pulled out of a John Carpenter film. Most rappers would not be able to pull off such a stripped down approach, but Mason pulls it off with aplomb. “HOW TO SURVIVE” has a bouncier instrumental, but most of Angel Eyes is actually typified by a reliance on guitars and and wistful vocal samples. It is not a happy album, but Kenny Mason’s ability to channel his pain is undeniably compelling.

Taylor Swift Will Allegedly Be Featured On Kendrick Lamar’s New Album

Kendrick Lamar has not given up any information on his new album. The only bits of information that fans have to go on is Dot’s upcoming Halftime Show performance at the Super Bowl, and the snippet that was teased during the “Not Like Us” video. No word on a title, a release date or any of the artists who will be on the album alongside the rapper. At least, that was the case until November 19. DJ Snake went on live stream and teased the possibility of a Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift collab around the corner.

DJ Snake claimed that he has exclusive insight into the recording process for Kendrick Lamar’s new album. He didn’t give too much away in terms of features, but he did claim that Taylor Swift will be on the album in some capacity. DJ Snake knew he dropped a bombshell, too, because he immediately took the microphone and uttered the phrase “world premiere.” It would be jarring to hear Taylor Swift on a K. Dot record, but there’s definitely a precedent. Lamar appeared on the remix to “Bad Blood” in 2013, which gave the rapper his first number one single. Lamar also collaborated with Swift’s frequent collaborator, Jack Antonoff, on the beat for “6:16 In L.A.”

Taylor Swift’s Producer Recently Worked With K. Dot

Kendrick Lamar’s decision to work with Taylor Swift could also be perceived as a dig against Drake. The 6 God mocked Lamar for having to work with artists like Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift to land crossover hits. “Maroon 5 need a verse, you better make it witty,” Drake rapped on “Push Ups.” “Then we need a verse for the Swifties. Top say drop, you better drop and give ’em 50.” The 6 God also referenced Taylor Swift on the follow up diss, “Taylor Made Freestyle.”

In 2023, Taylor Swift praised Lamar’s writing process on the aforementioned “Bad Blood” remix. She detailed his mastery of the craft in an Instagram post meant to commemorate the song’s re-release. “Watching @kendricklamar create and record his verses on the Bad Blood remix was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life,” she explained. “I still look back on this collaboration with so much pride and gratitude, for the ways Kendrick elevated the song.” Let’s see if DJ Snake’s claim proves to be true.

Playboi Carti Needs To Choose Between Secrecy & Superstardom Before It’s Too Late

Despite what the rabid, terminally online, and obsessive nature of Playboi Carti fans suggests, he is not music’s only mystery. It’s been four years since his highly influential classic, Whole Lotta Red. In the meantime, the wait for its follow-up has been exhausting, chaotic, often exciting, frequently disappointing, but always fervent. A huge run of non-streaming singles poised 2024 as the Atlanta creative’s year, which itself followed multiple canceled tours, massive festival performances, tease after snippet after announcement after delay, and bare-minimum social media engagement up until some more frequent activity this year. As you can tell, it’s been a vicious cycle that both shrouds Carti in mystery and allows him to benefit from massive industry moves or get a bag whenever he feels like it. To be fair, you can say this about many artists today, so don’t think we’re singling out the Opium boss just to hate.

But his frequent collaborator The Weeknd knew this self-eating snake better than most. Abel Tesfaye’s rise in the early 2010s was wholly mysterious. People didn’t even know his face, while sheer Internet buzz opened the big label rooms and star-studded studio sessions. By 2015, the XO cofounder was a trailblazer capitalizing on his emerging pop appeal through his die-hard following’s ever-rewarded support. Today, he’s arguably the biggest artist in the world. Frank Ocean also knew this cycle, but his approach to his mystique runs opposite to Abel’s. The former Odd Future crooner was at a similar crossroads and instead doubled down on his mystery to make his trajectory all the more legendary… and infamous for its current flatline. Nevertheless, both artists did what Playboi Carti has yet to prove: they made a choice.

Why Is Playboi Carti Moving Like This?

https://twitter.com/Kurrco/status/1858545824906830298

Frank Ocean and The Weeknd chose between secrecy and superstardom, and Playboi Carti still can’t seem to find his perfect balance. Of course, the dry spell of releases since Blonde doesn’t automatically make Frank an underground gem, and Abel certainly keeps his moves under wraps to reserve a bit of his sauce for some likes or brand deals. But the Die Lit rager seems to lose control of his ship every once in a while, whereas his soulful contemporaries position even their most mainstream or frustratingly silent movements as careful, intentional, and well-planned. There are a few different examples of this from 2024. After zero streaming support for fan favorites like “H00DBYAIR” or “Different Day,” “All Red” came out like a damp thud more than a big bang, pretty much sounding like Future as opposed to the icy and smoky IG drops that already captivated the vamps.

Playboi Carti is the premier set of any festival he attends, but when it comes to his Opium tours, their abrupt and unexplained cancelations don’t seem to respect their attendees’ time, financial commitments, or patience. He posts a lot sometimes and is all love with fans, but rarely says much and has a few cases of alleged abhorrent behavior. In the minds of fans, Carti’s probably holed up in a cave somewhere making hard rage with the lights off but he’s actually popping out for Camila Cabello collabs, scamming Adin Ross (no judgment call there), and getting bags for ComplexCon and Camp Flog Gnaw this past weekend. At the end of the day, none of this would be worth mentioning if he addressed it fully or not at all. But this “best of both worlds” approach feels raw, messy, but still visceral at best, and manipulatively fabricated at worst.

Carti Loves Flying Close To The Sun

https://twitter.com/Kurrco/status/1858424618236912096

All this reminds us of Playboi Carti’s closest 2020s collaborator: Kanye West. We all know how hectic and unsatisfying Ye rollouts can be, and he also communicates through more secluded channels while enjoying his exorbitant fame. They share behavioral patterns, like posting DMs with associates and benefitting from “leaks” for more hype. Yet, as the VULTURES series, Donda 2, and the meager “All Red” proves, shadowy anticipation can flop. Glorifying these releases contradicts the counterculture they initially communicated, disappointing mainstream and cult fans for completely different reasons.

Winning that trust back takes time. There was a similarly secretive and electric fable around Whole Lotta Red bolstered by leaks and singles that weren’t the album’s eventual sound. Then it dropped, and many booed. But years passed, and eventually, Playboi Carti fans recognized it as an innovation from the underground to a mainstream stage. Now, “Different Day” is basically a year old, and we’ve heard “EVILJ0RDAN” to death.

It seems like Playboi Carti forces himself to reinvent his sound multiple times with each new album cycle because the preceding build-up is already old news by the time it drops. That’s a really enticing approach artistically, but it leaves a lot of missed opportunities in its wake. Those unfulfilled chances might be horrible music industry logistics and politics, or completely by his design. We hope King Vamp can overcome that in the former’s case. This new era is amazing; don’t get it twisted. But if the latter interpretation is true, and he keeps raising his ceiling higher than he can reach, then he knows his cult status and low efforts will get him paid superstar money either way. Wish we hadn’t solved that mystery…

Playboi Carti Claims There Will No Features On “I AM MUSIC” Album

Playboi Carti is an unpredictable artist. He’s ramping up an album rollout one week, and then going silent the next. It has looked like we were getting I AM MUSIC at several different points throughout 2024. And yet, we are still waiting on the rapper’s anticipated third album. At the risk of broadcasting the voice that has repeatedly cried wolf, Playboi Carti was filmed chatting with fans on November 18. The rapper spoke on the upcoming album, and dropped a huge piece of information regarding its creation.

Playboi Carti can be seen fielding questions from fans while sitting in the back of an SUV. The rapper asked fans whether he should release I AM MUSIC in 2024 or 2025. He decided to pose this question once more on social media. Playboi Carti was then asked which artists were set to appear on the album. The rapper gave a response that was surprisingly direct. “I’m tryna do this by myself,” he mumbled, while rubbing his nose. It may sound bizarre, the notion of an album without any features in 2024, but most of the snippets and leaks support Carti’s claim. There have been a dozen or so leaked snippets from I AM MUSIC dating back to 2021.

Playboi Carti Promises New Music On November 22

All of them feature Playboi Carti on his own, except for the Travis Scott collab “BACKR00MS.” Carti may be the only rapper who appears on the album, but he has recently teased the involvement of other iconic producers. Carti’s snippets include production from the likes of Cardo and SpaceGhostPurrp. The rapper also claimed that Kanye West has a hand in the production of I AM MUSIC. The Ye connection was hinted at in September, then confirmed during a recent live appearance in Las Vegas.

“Shout out to my n**ga Kanye, you know what I’m saying,” Playboi Carti announced to the crowd. “He over here making beats and sh*t. That album gonna be crazy, I can’t wait to show y’all n**gas.” Carti has also teased brand new music on November 22. The rapper has only released one official single from I AM MUSIC thus far, “All Red,” so it stands to reason that what we will be getting on Friday is the second single. Assuming, of course, the rapper makes good on his promise.

Playboi Carti Reveals Kanye West Is Producing New Album “I AM MUSIC”

Playboi Carti is giving Frank Ocean a run for his money. The rapper has made an art out of album delays. Whether it be in the form of social media teases or an album announcement for an album we have known about since 2021. It seemed like things were going in a positive direction in September, when he dropped “All Red.” Radio silence followed. Until, that is, Playboi Carti performed on November 16. He not only hyped up the album, but revealed that Kanye West is going to be playing a crucial role in its sound.

Playboi Carti grabbed the mic and showed love to Kanye West amidst all the nightclub chaos. “Shout out to my n**ga Kanye, you know what I’m saying,” he announced. The audio gets a little tough to hear after, thanks to a particularly hyped fan, but Carti seemingly confirms West’s involvement in his upcoming third album, I AM MUSIC. “He over here making beats and sh*t,” Playboi Carti explained. “That album gonna be crazy, I can’t wait to show y’all n**gas.” The glass half full read of this is pretty easy to pull out. Carti and Kanye West is a match made in hip hop heaven, especially if the latter is focused. West is reportedly hard at work on his next album, Bully, so it makes sense that he would be locking in with other artists.

A post shared by YeVault (@yevault)

This isn’t the first time Playboi Carti has hinted at West playing a role in I AM MUSIC. The rapper got on Instagram Stories in September to show love to the controversial figure and tease future collabs. “@Ye KANT WAIT 2 SHOW THE WORLD WHAT WE BEEN WORKIN ON WIT DIS ALBUM,” Carti wrote. “WE DA REAL 5L NO DOUBT.” West showed love to the rapper in return, commenting: “Love this” under the post. Carti has repeatedly cited Kanye West as an influence on his work. West has returned the favor by citing Playboi Carti as one of the most important artists of his generation. “It’s always two, two at a time,” West said, when discussing influence. “It’s really Carti and [Lil] Uzi [Vert].”

Playboi Carti has seemingly kicked the album rollout into hire gear since confirming West’s involvement. He took to Instagram on November 18 to announce that he will be dropping new music on November 22. The IG highlight featured a text exchange in which the release date was confirmed. Interestingly enough, the highlight was taken down by Instagram hours later. Carti did clarify that new music is coming, despite the IG complications.

Andre 3000 Reveals He Has New Solo Music Coming In 2025

Andre 3000 is on his own creative path. He was a wildly unpredictable presence within Outkast, but his solo career has been even harder to pin down. He’s taken on unexpected collaborators, dropped wildly impressive guest verses, and made a hard left turn into instrumental jazz. Andre 3000 is a true original, and he continued to shock fans during a November 18. He revealed that he has plans to drop new music in 2025. A mere two years after releasing his first solo album.

The revelation came about during Andre 3000’s appearance at Camp Flog Gnaw. The legendary Outkast member sat down for an interview Wayno for Amazon Music. Several topics were hit upon, but it was the revelation of what Stacks had planned for the new calendar year that really turned heads. “What does an Andre 3000 vision board look like going into 2025,” Wayno asked. Without missing a beat, Andre stated: “New music for sure… new ways to distribute and express… I just want to express more.” He admitted he was reluctant to put too fine a point on what he had planned, but new music has been confirmed.

Andre 3000 Wants To “Express More” Musically

Andre 3000’s output has increased drastically in the last few years. He not only shocked fans with an album, but he recently contributed a song to a compilation. The massive song “Something Is Happening and I may Not Fully Understand but I’m Happy to Stand for the Understanding” appeared on the Transa: Select album in October. While it largely followed the instrumental path laid out by his solo release, New Blue Moon, it also featured Andre on vocals. This marks the first instance of the artist’s voice being on a song since he stepped back from rapping.

The industry reception to Andre 3000’s shift from rapping has been mixed. People like LL Cool J have castigated Three Stacks for not giving the fans what they want. Pharrell, on the other hand, has assured fans that the Outkast star will return to what he does best. “He not running, he just saying he not going to force it,” Pharrell told GQ. “What you love about him was when he was compelled. It’ll be back. When [he] does. He’s going to come in hot.”

Mac Miller’s Unreleased Album “Balloonerism” Announced At Camp Flog Gnaw Festival

Music fans continue to mourn the loss of Mac Miller, but they are more concerned with celebrating his legacy and the great work that he left us with. While he’s no longer around to share that love and passion with fans, it seems like they will get more chances to spread them in his name. Moreover, this is because of a new teaser that played during the first day of Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium (Saturday, November 16). In between Sampha and The Alchemist’s sets at the “Gnaw” stage, a teaser with various colorful visuals of anthropomorphic animals played on the screens, playing the previously leaked “5 Dollar Pony Rides” track from “The Quest” creative.

At the end, a title card simply read “Soon” as a balloon depicting Mac Miller’s face in an abstract, George Condo-esque way rose up. As such, fans are very excited about the possibility that Mac’s long-lost and unreleased album Balloonerism could be officially coming out as a posthumous release. The album was recorded in between Watching Movies With The Sound Off and Faces between 2013 and 2014, with some leaked tracks and associated songs landing on the latter project.

Mac Miller’s Balloonerism Is Apparently On The Way

In addition, E. Dan of ID Labs posted and then deleted some comments about Mac Miller’s Balloonerism. Basically, he said that the whole thing comes from a week of studio jam sessions and that Mac eventually moved onto Faces, taking a few tracks with him. Over the years, many songs from this era leaked online, and fans are very eager to hear what could arrive. Of course, maybe we’re all just misinterpreting this clip with no release date or official statement to work with, but it seems pretty reasonable. There could also be more unreleased music on the way from the Pittsburgh legend…

However, it’s important to note that some fans will understandably always be skeptical when it comes to posthumous releases. Fortunately, it seems like Mac Miller’s estate, loved ones, and fans assumed that responsibility with the utmost care and respect, so hopefully Balloonerism follows suit. He continues to resonate with massive audiences, and we can’t wait to celebrate his life again.

Desiigner Enters A “Rebirth” After A Six-Year Hiatus

When Desiigner came onto the scene back in 2016 with his breakout record “Panda,” there were a lot of skeptics. Many were labeling him a blatant Future rip off and prediciting that he would become a one-hit wonder. However, thanks to songs like “Tiimmy Turner” and “Outlet,” and a feature on Kanye West’s posse cut “Champions,” he seemed to quite a handful of doubters. However, after 2018’s L.O.D. project, Desiigner would continue to fade and steadily. Things wouldn’t get any better even as of recently, as the Brooklyn rapper and singer would run into some wild legal trouble. In 2023, he would be charged for indecent exposure while on a flight back to the states from Japan.

He addressed the bizarre situation in a sit-down with Adam22 on his No Jumper platform claiming that it was due to his lack of sugar in his body due to the vegan diet he was on. He also said the medication he was on caused him to act out. Again, this left many skeptical. Based on all of this, it’s clear that Desiigner has not had the easiest of career trajectories for a while. However, it seems that he’s doing better now and back to dropping new music. He’s been releasing a lot singles, but the gap between L.O.D. and now is wide. Enter Rebirth, Desiigner’s third project. It’s a perfect title, as the East Coast act sounds focused and more mature on this concise eight-song tape. He says there’s even more music on the way, so maybe a Rebirth really is happening for him?

AraabMuzik Claims That Fabolous Has Two New Albums On The Way

AraabMuzik is an elusive figure in hip hop. The producer helped shape the sound of New York in the 2010s, thanks to collabs with legends like 50 Cent and Cam’ron. He doesn’t often give interviews, but he made an exception on November 15. AraabMuzik, real name Abraham Orellana, sat down for a chat with podcaster Victor Baez to discuss new music. The producer talked about his own ventures, as well as his creative process. The real bombshell came, however, when he spoke on what Fabolous has cooking up.

Fabolous is another New York legend who worked with AraabMuzik in the 2010s. The two have worked on a number of mixtapes together, including all three entries in Fabolous’ Summertime Shootout series. The last Summertime Shootout, Coldest Summer Ever, dropped in 2019. Fab has been pretty quiet in the intervening years, but AraabMuzik claims the silence is almost over. The producer told Baez that Fab has two projects in the works. One of them will be a solo venture, and the other will be an AraabMuzik collab.

Fabolous Hasn’t Dropped An Album Since 2019

“His project, of course, is dropping,” AraabMuzik explained. “Looking forward to his project and then something we got in the works.” Fabolous has been making guest appearances throughout 2024. He dropped in on Mary J. Blige’s single “Breathing,” as well as the French Montana and Fivio Foreign collab “To the Moon.” Fabolous also contributed a verse to the sprawling Cash Cobain song “Problem.” He was featured alongside a gang of artists, including Big Sean, Flo Milli, Luh Tyler and 6LACK.

As far as solo ventures go, though, fans have been waiting. Fabolous hasn’t dropped an official body of work since the aforementioned Coldest Summer Ever in 2019. Not only has there not been any new solo material since, there hasn’t even been a hint of something new. Seriously, Fabolous’ Wikipedia ends with the rollout for the third Summertime Shootout. AraabMuzik speaking on new material is major, but just as major is the confirmation that Loso is on his way. AraabMuzik, meanwhile, just dropped the collaborative tape Living Proof with Dave East. Fittingly, Fabolous appeared on the song “Buss Down.”

Maxo Kream Showcases Three Unique Perspectives On “Personification”

Maxo Kream has brought us Personification, his fourth official album of his underappreciated career. The Houston storyteller had given us several potential glimpses into this project throughout the year. At times, they were extremely hard-hitting and personal. “No Then You A H*e” still holds the top spot in terms of our favorite Maxo tracks from 2024. However, the episodic recalling on “Big H*e Me” is certainly in contention as well. But instead of continuing to hone his already well-established tracks in this vein, he’s been giving us some more loose bangers such as “Bang The Bus” too. This diversity is something that Maxo Kream was looking to achieve on this new album.

There are three perspectives that he raps from on Personification and they are Trigger Maxo, Punken, and Emekwanem. Trigger is the more brash and gangster-like profile, so “Big H*e Me.” As for Punken, a reference to his fourth overall project, is the more introspective and thought-provoking side. Then, there’s the latter which is his government name, and it represents his current lifestyle as a father and role model of sorts. The overall idea of Personification is an interesting one, however, it doesn’t feel fully realized. Maybe dividing the personas into discs may have helped get the idea across more effectively as all of them feel jumbled together. But there are good tracks that most fans will appreciate.
