Polo G’s Life Gets A Whole Lot Faster In His ‘Sorrys & Ferraris’ Video

Polo G has put some distance between himself and his last album, 2021’s Hall Of Fame, and as he prepares to release his first new album in three years with Hood Poet, the Chicago rapper takes one last look in the rearview with its first single, “Sorrys & Ferraris.” While he reflects on when he “used to chase a bag on that curb,” he celebrates the fact that his “life is like a party now.”

Naturally, the video sees Polo commandeer a fleet of the titular sports cars, which race down the roadway as scenes from Polo’s party life play out. In addition to burning rubber on the asphalt, he’s seen beaches, birthdays, private jets, and more. There’s also a good look at his unique iPhone chain. The Arrad-directed video is simple but effective, as befits the rapper’s low-key personality.

Although Hood Poet was initially scheduled for a September release last year, Polo held off on dropping the album. “I’mma be postponing my album drop ’til further notice,” he explained in a message to fans on social media. “Just getting back on track from a minor setback… it’ll be worth the wait. I promise.” And while he characterized the cause of the delay as a “minor setback,” if it was related at all to his arrest last year on kidnapping, robbery, and assault charges, it doesn’t sound like that setback was so minor. However, it looks like things are back on track, as he told TMZ he’s looking forward to an August release for Hood Poet.

Boosie Badazz Doubles Down On Usher Super Bowl Criticisms

Last week, fans of sports, music, and pop culture at large gathered to watch the Super Bowl. During the game itself, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs played the San Francisco 49ers in an exciting back-and-forth game. The teams needed overtime for Kansas City to eventually win the game and take home their second consecutive Super Bowl win. But music fans were more focused on what happened between the two halves of the game during Usher’s massive halftime show.

The R&B legend unpacked some of the biggest hits from his decades-long career much to the delight of fans. He also had an array of guests involved which included Alicia Keys. The pair performed “My Boo” together, though the most talked about moment didn’t have much to do with either of their singing. It was a moment when Usher hugged Keys from behind in a moment that felt a bit too forward to many for two married artists. One person who was unsurprisingly quick to share their thoughts on the move was Boosie Badazz. Now just a few days later he’s doubling down on his comments criticizing the singer’s forwardness. Check out his new comments below.

Boosie Badazz Still Going At Usher

In a new video, Boosie is getting a haircut discussing the situation. “That is a man’s wife, bro. You cannot put your genitals on the back of a man’s wife. Cause everywhere I go they’ve been on my ass, and I’m gonna stand up for what I say ’cause I’m a real one,” he says in the video. He goes on to claim that the interaction was unplanned.

“First of all, it wasn’t planned because of the reaction on her face… If it was planned, she would have had time to ask her husband was this okay. I feel like both of them would’ve said no because they know how social media will take something like that.” What do you think of Boosie Badazz take on Usher and Alicia Keys’s Super Bowl moment? Do you think he’s right about the singer stepping over the line? Let us know in the comment section below.

Uproxx Music 20: Jordan Mackampa Nourishes The Soul With The Fulfilling ‘Welcome Home, Kid!’

Jordan Mackampa 2024 press photo
Aiden Harmitt-Williams

Jordan Mackampa’s sophomore album Welcome Home, Kid! will be one to remember in 2024.

Through 14 songs, listeners will be whisked away on a soulful journey that is rejuvenating. Welcome Home, Kid! is the British-Congolese singer’s coming out party, and boy is it a good time. “Proud Of You” keeps you light on your feet with a giddy dance that’s a perfect match for the song’s fluttering piano keys and roaring trumpet. “Step By Step” and “Blaccjack The Mac” take you to church with glorious trumpets, lively drums, and the energy that only a family cookout can provide.

I’ll go out on a limb here and say Mackampa’s Welcome Home, Kid! will go down as one of 2024’s best R&B releases. Along with production that adds fuel to the spirit, Welcome Home, Kid! celebrates the moment that things start to make a little more sense. It captures the applause that comes when you’ve finally discovered your purpose after doing the nitty-gritty work to get there. In his second coming as an artist, Jordan is back home – at least in the figurative sense – where he belongs.

With Welcome Home, Kid! available in just a few hours, Uproxx caught up with Jordan Mackampa to talk about his early music memories, who he’d play on The Bear, and more for our Uproxx Music 20 Q&A.

What is your earliest memory of music?

My mum dancing in our kitchen and me clinging onto her legs as she moved.

Who inspired you to take music seriously?

My music and performing arts teachers.

Do you know how to play an instrument? If so, which one? If not, which instrument do you want to learn how to play?

I play few at the moment, I’d love to learn a horned instrument next like a trumpet, just need to find a quiet play to practice that doesn’t annoy my neighbours.

What was your first job?

I was the world’s worst door-to-door salesman, asking folks to give me their credit card details at the most inconvenient times of the day, in return for a £9.99 ‘Lovefilm’ subscription.

What is your most prized possession?

My hard drive.

What is your biggest fear?

Hahahaha, no way I’m sharing that on the internet.

Who is on your R&B afrobeats Mt. Rushmore?

Jazmine Sullivan, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Lianne La Havas.

You get 24 hours to yourself to do anything you want, with unlimited resources: What are you doing? And spare no details!

First things first, I’m clearing all student debts everywhere and repurposing that money into affordable housing, healthcare & education systems, with a mandatory course on a selection of Bell Hook’s work. Secondly, I’m giving Palestine back to the Palestinians as well as every other country fighting for their freedom. Not long after that, I’m decriminalising sex work & any incarceration charges for marijuana. Lastly, I’d put together my dream show so I can watch Childish Gambino & Kirk Franklin go back to back.

What are your three most used emojis?

☠🤎🥵.

What’s a feature you need to secure before you die?

Something with Ari Lennox or J. Cole.

If you could appear in a future season of a current TV show, which one would it be and why?

The Bear, I could play Marcus’ brother or a new love interest for Sydney — I’m open to both.

Which celebrity do you admire or respect for their personality and why?

Damson Idris, I feel like in an alternative universe somewhere we’re good friends who have discourse all the time, over where the best Jamaican food in London is.

Share your opinion on something no one could ever change your mind about.

Songs In The Key of Life isn’t Stevie Wonder’s best album.

What is the best song you’ve ever heard in your life and what do you love about it?

“Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza” by Mac Miller. I love how instantly I’m trapped in that nostalgic feeling so quickly.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform, and what’s a city you’re excited to perform in for the first time?

London’s always gonna be a favourite because it’s home, New York is fun too. Europe is taking the top spot right now though, especially Germany & the Netherlands.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location where it would be held.

Chance The Rapper only doing Acid Rap/Coloring Book songs, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator, Kaytramine, and Dijon. Gimme a field with an open bar/taco stand & I’m comfy.

What would you be doing now if it weren’t for music?

I’d be a chef running my own 24hr diner.

If you could see five years into the future or go five years into the past, which one would you pick and why?

Past, so I could reassure myself that we’ll be ok.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Don’t break your back keeping bonds that don’t feed you.

It’s 2050. The world hasn’t ended, and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

As someone who poured all they had, into everything they did.

Welcome Home, Kid! is out 2/16 via AWAL Recordings Ltd. Find out more information here.

Gunna Recaps His Tumultuous Comeback With ‘Bittersweet,’ Which Sums Up The Stress Of Success

Gunna, who had an unexpectedly great 2023, is back with another new single, suggesting he has no plans of resting on his laurels this year. After promising new music would be coming “soon,” he has delivered with “Bittersweet,” an introspective hymn that expresses his paranoia and the stress that comes along with success. Over a slow-simmering guitar riff from producers Dystinkt Beats and 1SRAEL, Gunna laments the bumps in the road he’s experienced and warns listeners of the pitfalls that face anyone pursuing similar goals.

“Fans say when I rap, they hear the pain in my rhythm,” he intones. “Keeping them far back until I know they agenda / All these n****s capping like the man in the middle / They gon’ mеntion Wunna cause the views’ll bе bigger.”

Gunna’s had a fair amount of experience with friends and fans turning on him in the past year as well. After pleading guilty to a racketeering charge at the end of 2022, he was released from jail after over six months of being repeatedly denied bond to a hostile climate of hip-hop commentary declaring him a snitch. But that didn’t derail him from releasing one of the best rap albums of the year, A Gift And A Curse, slowly winning over skeptics with the increasing quality of his songwriting. It looks like that’s a trend that will continue in 2024, even if his relationships with former collaborators have soured.

Gunna is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Gunna Given “GOAT” Status After Dropping New Song “Bittersweet”

Gunna is an artist that many had written off just a couple of years ago. Overall, his involvement in the YSL Rico trial had fans scared about his future. However, when he got out of jail and Young Thug didn’t, there was a narrative that he had snitched. This subsequently led to people saying that they would no longer listen to his music, out of protest. Eventually, Gunna came back with a gift & a curse and that nonsense stopped immediately. He dropped a great project and it received a whole lot of love online.

Since then, fans have been waiting for Gunna to drop off his next full-length album. Firstly, you would think the artist would come through with a single. This would allow him to get people excited for any future album plans. Well, on Friday, he came through with a track called “Bittersweet.” This song was previewed in a recent freestyle posted to his Instagram page. With this new release, we get the vocals alongside a full instrumental, and it sounds like Gunna at his most focused and hungry.

Gunna Does It Again

Following the song’s release, many took to social media to sing its praises. After all, Gunna continues to be a fan favorite these days. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that people would be so eager to give the new track its flowers. From the production to the flows to the lyrics, it seems like people are really loving the track. Some are even going out of their way to call Gunna the GOAT. Sure, it might be hyperbole, but it just goes to show how successful his comeback has been.

Here’s Doja Cat In A Full Gecko Costume, Discussing A Celsius-Fueled Beef She Nearly Got Into

Doja Cat Therapy Gecko
Therapy Gecko

Doja Cat, more than most people in her shoes, likes to get silly and have fun. Case in point: She recently guested on The Therapy Gecko Podcast, in which a man in a gecko costume (non-therapist comedian Lyle Drescher) fields calls from viewers/listeners (the show is recorded live on Twitch). Doja went full-boar, too, putting on her own gecko costume.

In one clip from the show, Drescher asks Doja if she likes Celsius, the caffeinated energy drink brand. She explained that she “just can’t drink it” and that the beverage nearly got her into a feud. She explained, “I was singing a song and doing a voice of somebody else with the… I filmed myself doing the song in a crazy voice, and it was my really bad impression of that person. And people took it super wrong. They thought that I was trying to cause drama and issues, when really I was just being a f*cking asshole. I was being dumb.”

Elsewhere during the chat, Doja also revealed that the title of an upcoming deluxe edition of Scarlet will be titled Scarlet 2: Claude Frollo, named after the character from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.

In a 2023 interview, Drescher explained the origin of his offbeat show, saying, “I started streaming myself on Reddit as a gecko taking phone calls, and the streams would go on to the front page of Reddit. My expectation was that I would be living here and my mom’s basement doing this forever, but it has gone much better than I thought it would.”

Lil Baby Seemingly Hides Gunna Comments In His Twitter Replies

Unfortunately for fans of modern trap, it looks like we’ll never get the chance to hear what Drip Hardest would’ve sounded like. Moreover, the tensions between Lil Baby and Gunna ever since the latter’s plea deal in the YSL RICO case continue to become more deeply rooted. For example, one Twitter user noticed that, apparently, Baby hid one of his replies to a post that read the following: “stop dissing Gunna big dawg you breaking my heart.” While this is just social media speculation for the most part, since we’re not ruling out that this could be fabricated, it’s not surprising to hear that the 4PF rapper might not want to give the DS4EVER MC any more free publicity.

However, one important thing to consider here is that this beef stems from a much larger conversation. At the end of the day, multiple YSL members including Young Thug are still fighting for their side of the story in court. Thugger’s father even blasted Lil Baby for continuing to antagonize Gunna throughout this process. “He need to shut the f**k up ’cause he don’t know what’s going on,” Jeffrey Williams Sr. expressed during an interview. “You know he’s going off what he heard. Ask Lil Baby have he ever came to a court date. That’s what I want y’all to ask these goddamn rappers and these bloggers with this whole snitch sh*t.”

Lil Baby Accused Of Hiding Gunna Support On His Twitter Page

In addition, both lyricists also have their own careers to think about, and Gunna certainly walked away with 2023 thanks to a Gift & a Curse, or at least, when compared to Lil Baby’s output. He even came out with a new song this week titled “Bittersweet,” a perfect word to describe his post-plea success. Meanwhile, his Atlanta counterpart and former partner is still gearing up for his next album. Fans hope that he comes through with a vengeance, but that he doesn’t focus everything on Wunna and on the typical fare he’s been known for over the past few years now.

Meanwhile, what do you think about this falling out? Do you think this is even legitimate or just put together for show? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments section down below. Also, for more news and the latest updates on Lil Baby and Gunna, log back into HNHH.

Best “First Day Out” Tracks In Hip Hop

“First Day Out” tracks have long been a staple of Hip Hop culture. Starting as far back as Violent J (of the ICP duo)’s 1991 contribution, artists have been emerging from prison and jail with a renewed vigor and outlook on life. In some cases, this initially presents itself with a kickass rap track. As a result, the days before or after a rapper is released from behind bars is widely anticipated. While not every free rapper takes this route, the ones that have made sure to come out swinging. Here’s a list of some of the best “First Day Out” Hip Hop tracks.

“JT First Day Out” – JT (City Girls)

When the City Girls dropped “JT First Day Out,” it was the perfect cherry to top off a long year of excellent tracks, despite the rude interruption of prison time. JT had just returned after serving 28 months in prison for credit card fraud charges. On the track, JT expressed her determination to keep blazing on no matter what.

“I been a real bitch way before the fed case / Yung Miami held me down, that’s a bitch ace / And if a bitch try her, it’s a cold case,” she rapped. Yung Miami had remarkably made sure that the duo’s momentum and dominance on the Billboard charts remained unchanged. She kept the City Girls running, working with big-time artists, particularly Cardi B and French Montana.

“First Day Out” – Kodak Black

Kodak’s “First Day Out” is a lesson on humility- or at least the futility of it. This is with the consideration that not many formerly incarcerated people can confidently repeat lines like “Gave my momma hunnid racks” on the first day of their release. It was almost a tell-all of his feelings and experiences while in jail, from allegedly concealing drugs in his cell during his incarceration to planning a comeback.

That was my twelfth time going to jail/ That was my second time going to hell and back,” he spat. The rapper was released on June 5, 2017  after serving nearly a month of his 364-day sentence. He was locked up for a parole violation from a series of 2016 convictions. Unfortunately, the song was still hot on the streets when Kodak racked up another round of felony charges across South Carolina. These include an alleged sexual assault, multiple gun charges, and a house arrest violation.

“California Love” – Tupac

“California Love” was Tupac’s triumphant re-entry into society following his release from prison in 1995. It remains one of the most successful First Day Out tracks ever. He had spent the previous eight months incarcerated at the Clinton Correctional Facility on contested sexual abuse charges. Pac, however, maintained his innocence and was released pending an appeal. Although he was released to what would sadly be the countdown to the end of his life, his talent remained, expectedly, unmatched.

Out on bail, fresh outta jail, California dreamin’!” is still an iconic song opening to this day. In fact, it still resonates on highways, and in clubs today. In the song, Pac pays homage to his beloved West Coast and California, from Sacramento to the Bay Area and beyond. The song also features producer-rapper Dr. Dre, and singer Roger Troutman with his signature ‘talk box’ vocal effects.

“First Day Out” – Tee Grizzley

In October 2016, Tee Grizzley was released from a Michigan prison. That very day, he recorded a song and bared his whole heart into it, and it changed his life. Three years before, he had found himself in hot water with the law after a failed jewelry heist in Kentucky. Coupled with that was a series of alleged home break-ins, which bagged him three years in the slammer. Unlike the other artists on this list, however, Tee Grizzlley was not a known name in the industry at the time of his incarceration.

On November 16, 2016, Tee Grizzley dropped “First Day Out,” one of the most memorable tracks in his discography. The single was released one month after he served time, and was marketed as his debut single. He was notably quite emotional on the song, rapping about his struggles, and what it felt like to fight for his life in court. While the track garnered momentum, an unofficial shoutout from LeBron James boosted the song’s popularity.

James made a video dancing to the track, which kicked off the “LeBron James Challenge,” where people copied the athlete’s moves in their videos. Tee Grizzley also received a shoutout from Jay-Z and was signed by Atlantic Records in 2017. Luckily, besides a small hiccup in August 2018, when he got arrested for breaking curfew, he’s managed to stay out of trouble since then. Instead, he’s focused on his music and his new career as a Twitch streamer.

“First Day Out” – Gucci Mane

A king among others, Gucci Mane’s “First Day Out” is what many other tracks aspire to be. Released as a part of his Writing On The Wall mixtape, the track came out in 2009. Throughout these years, it remains the gold standard for First Day Out tracks. Before his sentencing, Gucci Mane found himself in a long string of legal troubles that almost seemed too much for one man.

In 2005, he faced an aggravated assault charge for an incident involving a nightclub manager the previous year. Then, he narrowly escaped a murder charge for his involvement in a shooting tied to a member of Jeezy’s crew, Pookie Loc. To worsen the situation, Gucci Mane kept violating his probation. Finally, he got sent to county jail for six months for all his probation violations.

The year was 2008, and his career was bigger than it had ever been before. However, when Gucci came back into the sunlight, he recorded “First Day Out.” The song showed how jail had only given him time to sharpen his lyricism. He would later release another acclaimed first day out track in 2016: “1st Day Out Tha Feds.” Nonetheless, everyone agrees that the original is where it’s actually at.

Doja Cat Reveals An Artist Almost Started Beef With Her Over A Bad Impersonation

Doja Cat is pretty outspoken when it comes to her jokes and jabs on the Internet, so much so that she’s been in a couple of situations where folks on the receiving end don’t see what’s so funny. Moreover, she recently revealed that she almost started beef with another artist because she mocked their voice while amped up on a Celsius energy drink. This was during a recent conversation with Lyle, better known as the Therapy Gecko. If you’re unfamiliar with his content, he dresses up like a gecko and takes calls from people asking for advice, sometimes with a special guest. The Los Angeles superstar was in his guest seat this time around, and spoke of this near-inciting incident.

“No, I just can’t drink [Celsius],” Doja Cat remarked. “I have a really cr*zy Celsius story, I almost got into a beef because of Celsius. I blame this on Celsius, it’s not me! So I was singing a song and doing the voice of somebody else. Like, I filmed myself doing the song in a cr*zy voice, and it was my really bad impression of that person. People took it super wrong. They thought I was trying to cause drama and issues, when really I was just being a f***ing a**hole.” Folks eventually connected the dots and assumed that she could have been referring to a years-ago incident with Cardi B.

Doja Cat Recalls Near-Beef Situation With A Mocked MC: Watch

In the referenced clip above, you can see how Doja Cat sang one of the Bronx rapper’s cuts, something she did not appreciate in the immediate aftermath. Still, it didn’t result in any actual issues between the two, and things are pretty quiet on that front now. One of the last notable interactions the two of them had was when they teamed up to fire back against critics of “WAP.” But it’s at least heartening to know that they made this all water under the bridge, because the last thing we need right now is more femcee beef.

Meanwhile, with a deluxe version of Scarlet on the way, we’re sure that the “Agora Hills” lyricist will continue to expand her career and look back on what could’ve been with more refined perspectives. Will it bring about another clash over a misunderstood joke? Only time will tell. With that in mind, check back in with HNHH for the latest news and updates on Doja Cat.
