Sexyy Red’s Team Didn’t Believe In “Pound Town”

It’s hard for anybody to tell what will be a hit song ahead of time, especially which songs will be someone’s breakout hit. For Sexyy Red, her breakout hit “Pound Town” didn’t go over well at first. She told HipHopDX, “I was in the studio, and I showed it to my team, and they were like, ‘this ain’t it.’” That probably won’t come as a surprise to many fans. Dozens of rappers and artists across different genres have had similar label difficulties. Thankfully, Sexyy Red fought for the song that would eventually become her breakout. “I said this is the one! This the one! I’m telling you!”

The Tay Keith-produced single has taken off with fans and Sexyy Red knew it would. “I knew. I said, ‘we doin’ this, because we like the song.’ And it’s my stuff. My fans love me for being me. Imma drop it.” The instant success the song achieved with fans generated enough buzz to get Nicki Minaj’s attention. The resulting remix “Pound Town 2” became Sexxy Red’s biggest hit to date.

Sexxy Red Believed In “Pound Town”

Sexyy Red has had a busy 2023 so far. Last month, she released her major label debut album, Hood Hottest Princess. Just a few days ago she released the hilarious new video for the album track “Looking For The Hoes (Ain’t My Fault).” She’s also followed the album up with two new singles since then. Later in June, she teamed up with “Area Codes” rapper Kalii and XXL Freshman Finesse2Tymes on the song “Sheisty.” And just over the weekend, she released her new single “Skee Yee.”

Despite having a breakout year things haven’t been exactly smooth for Sexyy Red. A few weeks ago she walked off stage during a show at Summer Smash. After people in the crowd threw things at her on stage she cut her performance short. When she responded to the controversy with an Instagram post, however, she showed just how little it affected her. What do you think of Sexxy Red’s label not believing in “Pound Town?” Let us know in the comment section below.

SZA’s “Kill Bill” Video Almost Had Uma Thurman Cameo, Vivica A. Fox Claims

SZA’s “Kill Bill” is one of the biggest hits of the decade so far, let alone of 2022 and 2023 due to its late-year release. In addition, its music video was also very well-received, especially due to tapping original Kill Bill star, Vivica A. Fox. However, apparently the TDE singer’s team wanted to get the film’s main character, Uma Thurman, according to Fox. What’s more is that, even though The Bride didn’t appear, Vivica is still waiting for a reunion at some point through another film in the franchise. During an interview with AV Club, the actress spoke on these allegations and how she responded to this news- and to them reaching out to her.

“When I got it, I was surprised, to be honest with you,” Fox said of SZA’s video. “‘Cause they called… [It] took them five days to finally decide that they were going to hire me, ’cause I think they wanted Uma Thurman. But when you think about it, it’s a little bit more fitting for SZA and Vivica to be together because we’re both African American women, and when it came out, people just ran with it.

SZA’s “Kill Bill” Video

“They were like, ‘They’re going to make Kill Bill 3, finally,’” the actress continued. “Because people have been waiting for Kill Bill 3 for such a long time and see my daughter get revenge on Uma.” However, she also made it clear that she doesn’t resent or feel frustration over being second fiddle to Thurman when it came to getting a Kill Bill star on the video. “Cool,” she said of SZA’s efforts. “I mean, it is her franchise, as well as mine.”

Meanwhile, the “Gone Girl” singer explained the inspiration behind the video to Entertainment Weekly. In fact, she probably always wanted Fox to appear in the visual. “I love Vivica A. Fox’s character,” she remarked. “I love Lucy Liu’s character, I even love Bill. Because he’s super complex, I feel like he doesn’t understand why he did what he did. He’s void of emotion, but he loved The Bride so much that he couldn’t stand her to be with anyone else.” For more news and updates on SZA and Vivica A. Fox, log back into HNHH.

ASAP Rocky Dons Stacks On Stacks Of Gold Chains While Filming Video With Locals In Barbados

There’s been a clear maturing in ASAP Rocky since he assumed the role of a father last May. Both he and Rihanna have acknowledged this growth, as have fans who are glad to see the East Coast icon looking happier than ever before. While he’s been on daddy duty, new music arrivals from Rocky have been few and far between, though listeners are holding out hope that he’ll drop something noteworthy on us in the near future. On Friday (June 30), we got unofficial confirmation that something is in the works. The lyricist was out in Barbados, mingling with locals while apparently filming a music video.

In one clip making rounds online, Rocky wears countless cold chains stacked around his neck over a white tee. Around him, a group of men excitedly cheer, looking somewhat similar to the ASAP Mob star (minus the bling). This could be intentional, as we previously saw him sprinting through Paris in Timbs in a crowd of men, also dressed in a similar fashion to him at the time.

Videos obtained by TMZ show Rocky rewarding those who came out to help him with his project. He handed them cash and hung out for a bit to snap photos for Instagram which have already begun circulating. Rihanna wasn’t spotted on set, though she did look stunning in a green mini-dress earlier this week when she and her man’s flight first touched down in Barbados.

The last single we got from ASAP Rocky, “Same Problems?” arrived in mid-January, meanwhile, the last album he gave us, TESTING, landed in 2018. Fans are obviously thirsty for more new music from the New Yorker, but while they wait, they’ve been reflecting on his discography. Read more about which of his past collaborations recently reached a major streaming milestone at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Alabama Barker Slammed For Recent Outfit

Travis Barker’s daughter is once again making waves for all the wrong reasons. According to Page Six, the aspiring rapper posted a new video to TikTok recently that has fans discussing her outfit choice. In the video, she sports a bikini and a poncho with Rastafarian colors that she should have probably known better than to wear. Many commenters agreed that the fit reminded them of Adele’s similar famous blunder. In a misguided 2020 picture, the “Easy On Me” singer sported a Jamaican flag bikini in a picture that also received its fair share of criticism.

It’s not the first time Alabama Barker has gotten into trouble for cultural appropriation. Last month she promoted some of her new music on TikTok and drew comparisons to many black female rappers. When the music video dropped even more people chimed in. Comments claimed that she was appropriating the image of black rappers and blackfishing. While it wasn’t entirely just hate for the singer there was certainly an uncomfortable feeling about her video.

Alabama Barker In Trouble Again

In other news, Alabama’s dad Travis Barker is expecting a child with Kourtney Kardashian. Alabama made it publicly known that she was there for Kourtney following the announcement. The couple also revealed the gender of their baby in a recent musical gender reveal. Kourtney sits on Travis’ lap while he plays a drumroll leading up to an eruption of blue confetti confirming that they’re having a boy. The pregnancy was announced during one of Blink-182’s recent concerts. Kourtney made a hilarious reference to the video for the band’s hit song “All The Small Things.”

Travis Barker has kept pretty buys touring with the original Blink-182 lineup. The trio played a surprise show at Coachella to kick off their reunited tour. Since then he’s still found the time to get into the studio. Rapper Tyga has been seen going in and out of Barker’s studio repeatedly as the two are reportedly working on new music together. What do you think of Alabama Barker’s controversial video? Let us know in the comment section below.

Drake Spotted Filming Music Video For Young Thug Song

Last week, Young Thug released his new album Business Is Business from prison. He’s already gotten quite a bit of mileage out of the record as fans have dissected all its lyrical details. Just a few days after the album originally dropped it was followed up with a special Metro’s Version helmed by producer Metro Boomin. Now the next chapter in the record’s development is clear, a music video for its breakout hit. While songs like “Parade On Cleveland” with Drake and “Cars Bring Me Out” with Future have been big, they aren’t the records first single. That honor goes to “Oh U Went” which also features Drake. Over the weekend Drake was spotted filming a music video for the track in Memphis.

A short clip that’s gone viral shows the rapper working on the new video. In the clip, Drake sits with a crowd of extras some of whom are singing along to the song and others are just enjoying the vibes. The particular part of the song that is playing is Drake’s verse. It’s unclear at the moment what visuals will accompany Young Thug’s parts of the song. Thugger is still incarcerated as part of the ongoing YSL RICO trial.

Drake In Memphis For A Video

In the days following the release of Business Is Business, Metro’s Version was released. The new version of that album featured a brand new song from Young Thug which featured Nicki Minaj and Juice Wrld. Afterward Minaj took to Instagram to dance to the new song and give Young Thug his flowers for being so influential to trap music.

Drake on the other hand has some new material coming in an unexpected way. Over the weekend he announced a new book of poetry called Titles Ruin Everything. He also confirmed that an upcoming album called For All The Dogs would accompany it. The book was dropped just a day after the announcement but the album doesn’t have a release date yet. What do you think about Drake shooting a new music video for Business Is Business? Let us know in the comment section below.

Kay Bandz Returns With “In My Bag” Single & Music Video

It’s been a quiet year for Kay Bandz so far, but the “Switch Locations” artist has made it clear with his latest single that he won’t be holding back any longer. His “In My Bag” track arrived earlier this month, complete with a music video that shows Bandz kicking back at home, pouring lean and getting his bars off for the camera. “Sorry for the wait 💎🙏🏽🙏🏽,” he wrote on Instagram before sharing his latest work with the world.

Prior to “In My Bag,” the last we heard from Bandz was on his November 2022 Charge It To The Game album. He mostly operated alone across 17 tracks but did collaborate with Young Thug’s brother, Unfoonk, on “Mind Right (Interlude)” as well as Portion and Wasiu on other titles. After taking time to recharge and become inspired again, Kay is feeling ready to make his mark on the industry.

Kay Bandz is “In [His] Bag”

The reception to “In My Bag” is positive so far, and the two-and-a-half minute-long effort definitely takes influence from Gunna. “This s**t make you grind harder,” one fan praised Bandz’s work in his YouTube comment section. Others complimented the hard-working lyricist on his constant improvement throughout the years, and declared his song a “banger.” It remains unclear what else we’ll see from Kay in the latter half of 2023, but fingers crossed it only gets better from here.

Top5 Facing Legal Trouble For Music Video Shot From Jail

Toronto rapper Top5, born Hassan Ali, is currently residing in a Canadian prison on a murder charge. Authorities allege that Top5 murdered accounting student Hashim Omar Hashi in 2020. Furthermore, it is believed that Hashi had been mistaken for the man who had killed Top5’s brother Foolish. While living in Los Angeles, Top5 was arrested and extradited to Canada in 2021. Prosecutors have clarified that Top5 is not being charged as the killer but as a passenger in the vehicle from which Hashi was killed.

However, despite being behind bars, Top5 is still finding ways to get in trouble. On June 24, he released the music video for his new song “21 Questions” featuring G Herbo and 6ixbuzz. Additionally, the video appeared to feature footage of Top5 shot inside the jail. Top5 is seen multiple times dancing and rapping in what appears to be his jail cell. The rest of the video was shot by G Herbo and company outside. Obviously, Canadian authorities were not pleased about this when it was brought to their attention.

Canadian Authorities Launch Investigation Into Top5 Video

The Ontario Solicitor General issued a statement about Top5, after the rapper released the video on June 24. Furthermore, the jail in question appears to be Maplehurst Correctional Complex. “The ministry is aware of an unacceptable incident involving a video posted online that appears to contain images of secure areas of the Maplehurst Correctional Complex,” Hunter Kell, a spokesperson for the Solicitor General, said in a statement.

Furthermore, Kell continued. “Unauthorized photography of any kind is strictly prohibited inside provincial correctional facilities. The ministry has launched a full investigation into this incident and appropriate action will be taken.” However, it’s unclear what “appropriate action” refers to. However, it appears that the Canadian authorities are taking this breach of prison protocol very seriously. This is a developing story and we’ll have any updates here at HotNewHipHop. What do you think about the situation? Let us know in the comments.

Coi Leray Gets Fans To “Get Loud” In New Music Video

Coi Leray’s sophomore album COI is finally here, and it’s got no shortage of energetic bangers and rap-dance crossovers. Moreover, the latest visual for one of those jams is here, bringing on soccer star Trinity Rodman for “Get Loud.” As far as the track itself, it borrows from a Jersey club-style rhythm mixed with anthemic horns and excited group vocals. Not only that, but the Boston native heats up the track with some boastful and emphatic verses that fit the melody and drum pattern quite well. Considering the wealth of music videos and singles we got as part of the album’s rollout, to see her continue to capitalize on this success is no surprise.

Furthermore, this is also far from the 26-year-old’s first crossover into the sports realm with her promotional material. For example, she worked with the WNBA for a campaign featuring her hit lead single, “Players,” further emphasizing female solidarity and teamwork. That certainly shows up in the “Get Loud” music video, where Rodman (USWNT forward) and others get invitations to a get-together via flyers. Coi Leray poses with a fancy car, of course, but also parties in the locker room as her peers dance to the track.

Coi Leray’s “Get Loud” Music Video

On that note of unity, the “Bops” hitmaker recently spoke about that when addressing Latto’s mention of her in her latest hit single. “It’s not a sensitive conversation,” Coi Leray told Ebro. “I feel like it wasn’t more about the body, it was more of mentioning my name. I’m about positivity. For real. And I wasn’t sure where it was coming from. And not only that, I feel like the problem with our community today is we be so quick to try to change things but we don’t do nothing to actually change anything.

“So if we’re going to say we’re going to stop talking about bodies, then don’t mention anything about my body,” she went on. “Just period. Don’t compare me to nothing, don’t think about nothing. We’re not smoking on anything, it’s disrespect. And where I come from I just don’t like that.” Check out the music video for “Get Loud” above and stay posted on HNHH for the latest news on Coi Leray.

Burna Boy And 21 Savage Seen Filming Music Video After Song Leak

Burna Boy and 21 Savage were beaten to the release of “Sittin’ On Top Of the World” by an online leaker. On June 22, the vintage afrobeat track was put up by a third party and widely shared across social media.

On June 23, Burna Boy released the song’s official audio on his YouTube channel. Furthermore, the song has also been made available on Spotify. At the time of writing, it has been streamed a little over 7000 times.

It’s unclear whether the duo were planning to release the track, or had their hand forced after it was leaked. However, the official audio release and Spotify drop indicate that they may have simply had their premier stolen out from under them. More evidence to this theory has appeared online, with footage of the pair apparently filming a music video together.

“Sittin’ On Top Of The World” Music Video Coming?

Shared by 2Cool2Bl0g, the brief footage shows the pair performing on a soundstage surrounded by cameras. At this point, it feels safe to say that they had intend to release “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” with or without the leaker beating them to it.

For Burna Boy, it’s his second big collab of the last 12 months. In 2022, he released “For My Hand”, which featured Ed Sheeran. Elsewhere, he also served as the featured artist on Indian rapper Sidhu Moose Wala’s “Mera Na” earlier in 2023.

Meanwhile, it’s 21 Savage’s third time as a featured artist this year. First, he featured alongside DaBaby on Gucci Mane’s “06 Gucci”. Then he joined Young Nudy for “Peaches & Eggplants”, which peaked at #74 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Unreleased Drake Song Heard In Houston Club

However, Burna Boy and 21 Savage aren’t the only people to have their unreleased music show up online. Area 29, located in Westwood in southwest Houston, treated fans to a reportedly unreleased track from Drizzy earlier this week.

Footage from inside the club was shared by Our Generation Music on Instagram. However, fans in the comments were not blown away by the song. Furthermore, others felt that Drake came off as “sassy.”

In other news surrounding Drake releases, the rapper appeared to confirm that he would be featuring on Business Is Business, the upcoming album from Young Thug. In fact, Drake appears twice on the album, featuring on “Parade On Cleveland” and “Oh U Went”.

Blueface’s Baby Mama Jaidyn Alexis Drops “Stewie” Single & Music Video: Watch

Blueface and his first baby mama, Jaidyn Alexis, haven’t always had a perfect relationship. Now, though, the 26-year-old is investing in his co-parent like never before. As the due date for his and Chrisean Rock’s first child together quickly approaches, he’s markedly continued to renounce his Cr*zy In Love co-star in favour of Jaidyn. Most recently he’s been putting in work to help her make a name for herself in the music industry. On Friday (June 23), Blueface surprised us with an announcement about his longtime lover’s first single, “Stewie,” which arrived alongside a music video this afternoon.

In the short new song, Alexis shares bars equally as salacious as we’ve heard from other female stars. She also makes it abundantly clear that she’s not phased by the hate coming her way. For some time now, the mother of two has been compared to Stewie Griffin from Family Guy, and rather than letting internet trolls get her down, she’s now using their insult to secure the bag. “I love the way you love me / It’s only ugly b**ches commenting I’m ugly (Is you blind h*e?),” she declares less than a minute into the song.

Jaidyn Alexis Shows Us What She’s Got on “Stewie”

“I’ll be Stewie for that money / My first song bump, and your coochie hella bumpy,” she continues, the disses only growing more ridiculous from there. Thus far the reaction on social media appears to mostly be embarrassment for Jaidyn, however, some of her fans are happy to see her channelling her energy into a more empowering medium than subtweeting.

Check out Jaidyn Alexis’ new “Stewie” music video exclusively on YouTube above. Do you think that Blueface’s first baby mama has the potential to make it in the rap industry? Let us know in the comments, and tap back in later this weekend for more HNHH release recommendations.
