“First Person Shooter” Helps Drake Tie Michael Jackson “Billboard” Hot 100 Record

At this point in his career, there’s not much that Drake feels he has to prove. The father of one is impressing us with his album run since unleashing Certified Lover Boy in 2021. After that came Honestly, Nevermind and Her Loss in 2022. Heading out on tour to perform hits from all of those was an ambitious feat, but Drizzy delivered on his It’s All a Blur adventure with 21 Sav back in the summer, all while working on his latest LP, For All The Dogs.

That project arrived just in time for Drake’s hometown shows in Toronto, where he brought out guests like Sexyy Red and Lil Baby. Thanks to 21 Sav finally getting a green card, he was able to perform in the 6ix on the tour’s final night, which is also when J. Cole came out to join his friend for “First Person Shooter.” Some have suggested that the Dreamville head “cooked” Champagne Papi on his own track, but nevertheless, both men had a blast spitting their well-crafted verses.

Drake and J. Cole’s For All The Dogs Collab Comes Out on Top

We’ve been eagerly waiting to see which of Drake’s newest arrivals would land atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart. On Monday (October 16) it was confirmed to be “First Person Shooter,” which officially marks Cole’s first-ever No. 1 song in his career to date. Besides that exciting news, it also means that the Scorpion hitmaker is now tied with Michael Jackson for the most chart-topping tracks from a solo male vocalist. Both the living and the deceased have amassed 13, and after his recently announced hiatus, it’s entirely possible that we’ll see the multi-talent overtake the King of Pop.

Tying Michael Jackson’s Billboard record is certainly an impressive feat for Drake, but still, that doesn’t mean the response to For All The Dogs has been totally positive. More specifically, the 36-year-old’s Spanish vocals on “Gently” featuring Bad Bunny left at least one TikToker’s mother less than pleased. See her reaction to the song at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” Forever Changed Halloween

Iconic in life and death, Michael Jackson’s discography has left a lasting impact on music history. His impact on pop culture is undeniable, and he is referred to as the King of Pop for good reason. However, in 1983, his reputation grew to accommodate an unofficial title—King of Halloween. When he released the universally acclaimed music video for “Thriller,” he forever changed the landscape for music videos in the industry. Forty years later, the song and music video are still widely referenced in modern media.

The Beginning Of “Thriller”

On November 2, 1982, Michael Jackson released his sixth solo studio album, Thriller. Jackson dropped seven singles from the project, including hit songs “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Human Nature.” The last single released was the eponymous track “Thriller.” However, the song was originally not intended to be released as a single, as Epic Records viewed it as a novelty. Additionally, the label was already satisfied with the successes of “Beat It” and “Billie Jean.” That is, of course, until album sales began to drop months after the album’s November 1982 release. Something had to be done, and in a spooky turn of events, “Thriller” came to the rescue.

Setting Up For Greatness

After deciding to make “Thriller” a single, Jackson had to recruit the right team to bring his vision to life through a music video. Consequently, he recruited the help of veteran director John Landis. Speaking with The A.V. Club, Landis revealed that Jackson was fascinated by his film, American Werewolf in London, which greatly inspired his conceptual portrayal of a werewolf. Landis not only directed the video for “Thriller,” but he also co-wrote it.

The duo conceived it to be a short film instead of just another regular music video. Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker handled the makeup for Jackson’s iconic transformations in the video. Ola Ray, a model, starred beside Jackson in the video and portrayed his girlfriend. Overall, the music video for “Thriller” was a massive production, and at the time, cost between $500k to $900k to make.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller Is Released

The 14-minute short film for “Thriller” had a limited theatrical release in late November 1983. In the last week of November, Michael Jackson’s Thriller opened for Disney’s Fantasia at a cinema in L.A. This was done so the feature would be eligible for the Oscars. After weeks of impatiently waiting to witness the spectacle of a video, fans finally got to see it in December. The short film had its worldwide debut on MTV on December 2, 1983, at midnight.

The music video for “Thriller” was an instant hit and impacted the entire world. Upon its release, sales for the Thriller album doubled. Ultimately, the short film significantly contributed in making Jackson’s sixth body of work the best-selling album in history. However, the pop star initially had reservations about releasing the video due to Michael Jackson’s background as a Jehovah’s Witness. The themes of the video clashed with his beliefs, and he allegedly had cold feet about releasing the movie. Nonetheless, he forged ahead with his plans. In his memoir, Moonwalk, Jackson revealed that he wanted to “be a pioneer in this relatively new medium and make the best short music movies we could make.”

Michael Jackson’s Thriller & Impacting Halloween

Although not originally a Halloween release, “Thriller” soon became heavily associated with the holiday. It has also seen a resurgence on the charts during the Halloween season. The horror themes of the music video fit right in with the eerie atmosphere Halloween is supposed to evoke. Every year since its release 40 years ago, “Thriller” has been heavily referenced during the spooky season.

Fans and celebrities constantly pay tribute to Jackson and his iconic short film. Halloween and the music industry have not remained the same since. Michael Jackson’s Thriller remains one of the greatest music videos of all time. With Halloween right around the corner, we are reminded, once again, of the game-changing video the short film is.

Plies Dubs Taylor Swift The “Caucasian Michael Jackson”: Watch

Taylor Swift wrapped up her record-breaking Eras tour in the summer after a brief fling with Matty Healy, and now, the country-turned-pop star is near-constantly making headlines due to her rumoured romance with Travis Kelce. The NFL star publicly declared his interest in Swift several months ago, and it seems as though he may have manifested her into his life, as they’ve been frequently seen hanging out at his games and with family. Both stars are playing coy on the situation, but still, the “Red” singer’s star has arguably never shone brighter.

Those who aren’t longtime fans of Swift are definitely feeling her presence at this time, causing some of them (including Plies) to ponder what brought the 33-year-old to such heights in her career. “I don’t want nobody in my comments because I don’t mean it in no derogatory way, but it’s some s**t I’m tryna figure out,” the Florida native told his Instagram followers in a video on Friday (September 29). “Motherf**king Taylor Swift, Tyler Swift? However you motherf**king say it. How is this motherf**ker this big, man?” he asked in astonishment.

Plies Wants Answers About Taylor Swift’s Career Trajectory

“How? I ain’t ever in my motherf**king life seen a motherf**ker this big! Besides motherf**king Michael Jackson. But, she got to be the motherf**king caucasian Michael! Every motherf**king channel I got on, there she is,” Plies observed, comparing Swift to the late King of Pop. She’s obviously been on ESPN due to the Kelce rumours, but the rapper also noted that MSNBC couldn’t get enough of the blonde this morning either. “She ain’t got a motherf**king BBL, she ain’t got no motherf**king tummy tuck. She ain’t got none of that s**t,” he added.

Whenever anything major happens in pop culture these days, one of the first figures the internet has been turning to for a reaction is Plies. The 47-year-old is, of course, best known for sharing his thoughts on Britney Spears’ NSFW dancing videos, declaring her everything from his “lil Hot Cheeto” to “[his] Beyonce.” Outside of that, he also shared his thoughts on another Brittany (Renner), who revealed her double-digit body count to Shannon Sharpe earlier this week. Drake Is One Song Away From Tying Michael Jackson For Most No. 1s By A Male Soloist

Drake and SZA’s “Slime You Out” kicked off the soon-to-come release of Drizzy’s album For All The Dogs, and got him one step closer to the history books. Moreover, that song went No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, marking his twelfth number one hit and putting him right up there with the legendary Michael Jackson. He has thirteen chart-topping tracks, which means the Toronto rapper is now just one song away from tying him for the fourth-most number ones in Billboard history so far. If you’re curious, he’s currently tied with Madonna and The Supremes for the fifth spot.

Of course, it’s fair to assume that one more track from For All The Dogs might just cinch this achievement for the 36-year-old. Given that his career shows no signs of slowing down, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him work his way up. Ahead of Drake are frequent collaborator Rihanna (14 number ones) and Mariah Carey (19 number ones). At the very top of the list are The Beatles, who have 20 tracks that claimed the top spot across their discography.

Drake & Michael Jackson Almost Have The Same Amount Of No. 1 Songs

In addition, this also marks one of the only hip-hop-adjacent songs that went No. 1 on Billboard this year- the second, to be exact. The first was Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red,” which ended a drought in this metric for the genre that existed since Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl.” Furthermore, this history sparked a hotly contested conversation around whether rap is a “dying” style, something that artists like Drake continue to disprove. It might not have the same chart-topping record as previous years, but it’s also the calm after a storm that dominated the early 2020s and mid-to-late 2010s. As such, we can’t really complain.

Meanwhile, the OVO superstar also has a lot to look back on and appreciate when it comes to his career. His 2013 album Nothing Was The Same, which established him as a top dog in the game, recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. While reflecting on his previous success, we’ll see if his future one puts The Boy right next to MJ. For more news and the latest updates on Drake and Michael Jackson, stay logged into HNHH.
