In the year 2023, pop culture witnessed some of its most unforgettable moments, thanks to the creative genius of one woman: Fatima Robinson. From curating mesmerizing performances in music and film with artists such asAaliyah, the late King of Pop, and more–Robinson’s impact on hip-hop culture cannot be overstated.
30 Years Of Non-Stop Talent
Throughout her illustrious 30-year career, Fatima Robinson has choreographed unforgettable dance routines for renowned musicians such as Aaliyah, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, and more.
From Aaliyah’s unforgettable videos like “Rock The Boat” and “Are You That Somebody” to Michael Jackson’s 90s classic “Remember The Time” and working as the Director of Choreography for Beyoncé’s groundbreaking Renaissance World Tour, Robinson’s influence is evident. Her ability to curate a variety of dance styles has left an indelible mark on some of the most iconic music videos in R&B and hip-hop culture.
It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t Robinson’s first collaboration with the “CUFF IT” singer. She was also involved in the singer’s performance at the 2022 Oscars alongside Blue Ivy, where they performed “Be Alive.”
Dancing In Hollywood
Robinson’s talents extend beyond music. Her involvement in other notable films, including Dreamgirls and Save the Last Dance, further cements her status as a creative force in the entertainment industry.
More notably, Robinson takes part in The Color Purple, which is marked as the second-biggest release of a Christmas Day film. According to Entertainment Weekly, it’s a project she holds “dear” to her as she stated:
“Out of my 34 years of choreographing and dancing, I watched this movie and for the first time I didn’t critque it. I didn’t feel like, ‘Oh I wish I would’ve done that. Oh, I should have moved that over there. A lot of times I’m very critical of my work and this is the first time where I finally said, ‘That is a masterpiece.’’
Remembered for her work with a recent role as the choreographer for the acclaimed film The Color Purple, many fans have granted Robinson her flowers. As @DollarBeKnowing expressed, “A Fatima Robinson documentary needs to happen. Sooner rather than later. Thank you in advance.” @She_DreadzMe praised Robinson’s recent work in “The Color Purple,” stating, “Give her flowers because this woman went from ‘Remember The Time’ to ‘Are You That Somebody’ to the ‘Renaissance Tour’ to TCP.”
Queen Latifah’s Impact On Hip-Hop
While Fatima Robinson’s impact on the culture is undeniable, she is not the only Black figure who has left a significant mark. Queen Latifah, a hidden influencer in hip-hop culture, shares a similar role in shaping the industry’s landscape, just like Robinson.
TwoTiime been on our radar ever since he dropped “Hood Cry.” The Ottawa rapper first appeared on HotNewHipHop with the release of his single, “Up2Me.” Since then, TwoTiime has been making some serious strides, culminating in a deal with Columbia Records and Polo G’s ODA (Only Dreamers Achieve) imprint. With the backing of a major label, the rapper is undoubtedly gearing up to make a splash in 2024. However, he’s not leaving us empty-handed before closing out 2023.
This afternoon, TwoTiime came through with his latest single, “One More Chance,” a refreshing bop that finds the Ottawa artist tackling an iconic sample from The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.” The single showcases TwoTiime’s innate ability to craft earworms of hooks while he delivers a message to the ladies and seemingly shoots his shot at Coi Leray. The “Juice” rapper’s charisma also takes center stage in the music video, which was shot in Los Angeles and includes a cameo from the iconic house from Michael Jackson’s Thriller. There’s no doubt that “One More Chance” sets the stage for what will be a fruitful new year in 2024.
With “One More Chance” ending his 2023 run, TwoTiime also preparing to open up for Polo G and Fivio Foreign in Montreal this Friday, December 15th at Place Bell. TwoTiime formally announced his deal with Colombia Records and ODA Records back in October and shortly after, unveiled his first single on the label “Priceless.” “Where I come from, this type of thing doesn’t happen. I’m not doing this for myself or my circle at this point. I’m doing this for my whole community,” TwoTiime told HotNewHipHop at the time. “I want them to know anything is possible if you have a dream, hard work, and dedication.” Check out TwoTiime’s new single above and sound off in the comments with your thoughts.

In a recent interview with TIME Magazine, Taylor Swiftdelves into the ongoing fan rivalry between her and Beyoncé’sfanbase. As their respective successful tours and concert films spark comparisons, the pop star speaks up against the culture of “stan wars.”
‘The Only Ones Compared Were Me And Beyoncé’
The Beyhive and The Swifties have been continuously entangled in heated debates, meticulously comparing Beyoncé’sRenaissance World Tourto Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, as both of their tours were deemed the most influential of the summer, with theater releases to follow.
In her recent interview with TIME, Swift stated:
“There were so many stadium tours this summer, but the only ones that were compared were me and Beyoncé. Clearly, it’s very lucrative for the media and stan culture to pit two women against each other, even when those two artists in question refuse to participate in that discussion.”
Taylor Swift showcases the depth of her bond with Beyoncé, revealing the admiration she holds for the music icon. The “Blank Space” singer describes Beyoncé as “the most precious gem of a person,” where she continued:
“When I’m talking to her, she is so warm and open and funny. She’s such a great disruptor of music-industry norms. She taught every artist how to flip the table and challenge archaic business practices.”
More Than ‘Industry Acquaintances’
Fans rejoice at Swift’s candid comments and the revelation of the genuine camaraderie between the two artists. One fan, @arianaunext, expressed “I love that they both love and support each other, especially since 2009. Despite their fandoms always fighting like cat and dog.” Their friendship extends beyond being “industry acquaintances,” as Queen Bey attended the film premiere of Taylor’s The Eras Tour, amidst the “stan wars,” where Taylor Swift reciprocated the gesture by supporting the “CUFF IT” singer’s London film premiere for Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé.

Mainstream Media’s Ongoing Comparison Of Taylor Swift To Beyoncé & Other Black Icons Spark Controversy
The ongoing debate surrounding Taylor Swift’s success has raised concerns about racial comparisons in the media, particularly when measuring her achievements against Black icons like Beyoncé. This debate extends to their respective fan bases, the Swifties and the Beyhive, and is further fueled by the recent releases of concert films from both artists.
Swifties Vs. Beyhive
An ongoing debate surrounding Taylor Swift and her success in the music industry has brought attention to mainstream media constantly comparing Swift’s achievements to those of Black icons instead of her white counterparts.
Media comparisons, like Yahoo Finance, tend to pit Queen Bey and the “Bad Blood” singer against each other, despite their unique contributions and accomplishments in the music industry. Furthermore, the comparison extends beyond the pop star’s success. Her fanbase, known as the “Swifties,” has been criticized for spreading racial hate towards Black icons, including Beyoncé.
The rivalry between both fanbases, the Swifties and the Beyhive has fueled the media’s comparison of the two artists, especially with both of them releasing concert films. When it comes to exposure, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are often pitted against each other, and the fact that both have recently debuted major concert films in theaters has only given more platforms for such comparisons.
However, it is crucial to recognize that both chart-topping artists have made their achievements in separate lanes, and comparing them disregards their artistry and contributions to the industry.
The history of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s relationship showcases their mutual support and respect. Despite the infamous incident at the 2009 VMAs, where Kanye West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech, Beyoncé showed kindness by inviting Swift on stage to finish her speech during her award acceptance.
The two artists have always supported one another, especially with their recent appearance together at Taylor Swift’s movie premiere.
Michael Jackson’s Nephew Speaks Out
Fans have expressed their concern overTaylor Swift always being compared to Black artists and not her white counterparts. Swift recently released her concert film, The Eras Tour, on Friday, October 13 grossing $123,505,678 worldwide.
After her record was announced, multiple news outlets reported on Taylor Swift possibly surpassing the late legendary Michael Jackson’s 2009 This Is It documentary film. However, the pop legend’s nephew, Taj Jackson had words for the media outlets that spread the “misinformation,” emphasizing that MJ’s film doesn’t fall within the same category; it’s a documentary film and not a concert film like Swift’s.
Following Taj’s blasting of several media outlets, fans are questioning the media’s choice to constantly compare Swift to Black icons.
One fan wrote, “The media and music/entertainment publications never compare that white woman to legendary white artists. They always compare her to legendary Black artists like Michael Jackson, etc, and that says a lot. Legendary white artists can never be replaced, but our Black legendary artists can.” Another fan wrote, “Her PR team is obsessed with trying to humble black artists. It’s beyond weird at this point!”
What About Madonna, Britney Spears Or Justin Beiber?
They also argue that white artists like Madonna, also known as the Queen of Pop, Britney Spears, and Dua Lipa are rarely compared to Taylor Swift.
Even Justin Bieber, who once held the record for the highest-grossing concert film with Never Say Never in 2011, reaching a staggering $99,033,054 globally, is not as frequently compared to Swift.
Justin’s 2011 film even held the former record for the highest-grossing music concert film since 1984 in the United States. Additionally, Bieber also occupies number two for the highest-grossing concert film, with Taylor Swift claiming the top spot, surpassing over $100 million.
RAYE Faces Fan Backlash After Canceling Show
While white media’s obsession with comparing Taylor Swift to Black icons continues to be a source of controversy, it is essential to address the toxic environment that can emerge from fan culture. This issue extends beyond Swift’s fanbase, as many fandoms engage in toxic behavior and parasocial relationships. Recently, emerging U.K. artist RAYE faced fan backlash when she canceled a show to perform on Jimmy Fallon Tonight.
A historical recording, concealed from the public for over 50 years, is being digitally released for the very first time globally. On December 7, the world will have the chance to access Michael Jackson’s inaugural studio recording, showcasing the original “Big Boy (One-Derful Version)” in the form of a “digital vinyl”, made available on anotherblock. In partnership with Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Legacy Foundation.
On July 13th 1967, eight-year-old Michael Jackson and his brothers entered One-Derful in Chicago for what would be their very first studio recording session. This session marked the first time in young Michael’s life that he had ever sung in a studio microphone and captures the first moment his voice was recorded on tape. It serves as the first-found evidence of The Jackson 5’s development under the wing of One-Derful, one of Chicago’s most influential black-owned labels, prior to their time with Steeltown Records – a moment that had previously been entirely lost to history. Since that day 56 years ago, the “Big Boy (One-Derful Version)” recording has never been digitally released to the public, until now.
The global release of this recording is made possible by its owner, Recordpool, in collaboration with anotherblock, a blockchain-based music and royalty marketplace renowned for featuring songs from acclaimed artists such as Rihanna, The Weeknd, and Justin Bieber. This unique “digital vinyl” is available in unlimited quantity and includes “Big Boy (One-Derful Version)”, accessible through anotherblock’s player, as well as images of the master tape and song stems (separate files of the track). For the collector, there’s also a limited edition with extra songs, providing a rare opportunity for fans to immerse themselves in the early days of The Jackson 5.
“This was their first step in music with ‘Big Boy’, empowered by the voice of the youngest and the best to ever do it. I can’t believe his voice, along with his brothers’, would echo for decades. Through anotherblock’s endeavor, the Jackson family’s initial recordings of our musical heritage find a new rhythm for the digital age. It is a testament that the Jacksons’ story, just like our music, remains timeless. And the best part is that some proceeds will go to a local foundation to help the families of Gary, Indiana.”, says Katherine Jackson.
The discovery of the studio master was made in 2009 by the Chicago Reader journalist Jake Austen. While writing a story about The Jackson 5’s first single, he picked up the trail of a tape nobody knew existed. The recording stands in stark contrast to the polished and meticulously crafted music that The Jackson 5 would later create for Motown. In the original, we witness a passionate eight-year-old Michael, only a few months away from transitioning from his life as an ordinary child in Gary, Indiana. A later version of “Big Boy”, re-recorded in a separate session, was released as The Jackson 5’s first single by Steeltown Records in January 1968.
“We are immensely proud and excited to bring this significant piece of music history to the world. This truly demonstrates how digital assets have the potential to prolong the life and enhance the value of art in a profound manner,”, says Michel D Traore, co-founder and CEO of anotherblock.
As the daughter of Michael Jackson, Paris has known since birth what it’s like to have all eyes on her. Thankfully, she’s now a pro at handling potentially sticky situations with grace, especially in the public eye. After a recent run-in with TMZ, the Swarm actress quickly used her social media platform to prevent her comments about another celebrity’s body art from being taken out of context. According to Jackson, the outlet asked her about Offset’s tattoo tribute to her late father during their latest encounter, and she wasn’t comfortable discussing another person’s body.
Rather than taking the opportunity to gossip, the 25-year-old told the reporter (who she clarified is always friendly during their interactions) that she’s not “really like in the business of commenting on what other people do with their bodies because it’s none of [her] f**king business.”
When explaining her reason for sharing the news, Jackson added, “I just figured this was going to pop up in the next day or two, so I wanted to steal TMZ‘s headline from them so that it’s not news anymore.” With any luck, other stars will begin to take the same approach and take their power back from media outlets misconstruing their words. Offset has yet to comment on the situation, and we’re curious to see if he will.
While TMZ is still talking about Offset’s tattoo tribute to MJ, the rest of the internet is concerned about the status of his relationship with Cardi B. The “Jealousy” collaborators have been throwing subliminal signs about a breakup, or at least trouble in paradise, on social media, and we’re burning to know if it is legitimate, or simply a ploy to distract the Barbz from streaming Pink Friday 2 when it lands later this month. Read more about the couple’s drama at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.
Nov. 30, 1982, marks the anniversary of the undisputed King of Pop’s monumental album Thriller. So it is no surprise that Thriller 40, a documentary that profiles and illuminates MJ’s artistic accomplishments added to an uptick in his streaming stats.
Thriller 40, which premiered on Dec. 2nd on Showtime, takes a deep dive into his music and massive influence on the industry at large and not as much into the complications of who Michael Jackson was as a person.
Thriller was easily one of Michael Jackson’s most impactful album projects ever released.
Produced by legendary music producer Quincy Jones, it is considered a culture-shifting body of work, created by Jones and MJ.
Fast forward to now and just last week, three of Jackson’s albums eased into top spots on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. Keep in mind the coveted chart only allows for 25 slots. As expected with the marketing of the documentary and other publicized fanfare, Thriller took a peaked at No. 6 for the week ending on Dec. 2, according to Luminate.
It looks like Thriller is still a masterpiece, and now experiencing the story behind the art is renewing all the excitement for one of Michael Jackson’s greatest achievements.
Tina Knowles, mother of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, took to Instagram to defend her daughter against the backlash she received for her appearance at her Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé premiere. Fans flooded social media with comments, accusing Queen Bey of bleaching her skin. This prompts the question: Why do Black prominent figures face constant scrutiny regarding their Blackness?
Ms. Tina Fires Back At Haters
On Nov. 25, the premiere of Queen Bey’s Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé occurred, marking the upcoming release of the “CUFF IT” singer’s highly anticipated film on December 1. During the premiere, Beyoncé was donned in silver and chrome Versace attire with platinum silver hair, leading some social media users to accuse her of bleaching her skin and being “whitewashed.”
Tina Knowles slammed these allegations, stating:
“She does a film, called the renaissance, where the whole theme is silver with silver hair, a silver carpet, and suggested silver attire and you bozos decide that she’s trying to be a white woman and is bleaching her skin? How sad is it that some of her own people continue the stupid narrative with hate and jealousy. Duh, she wore silver hair to match her silver dress as a fashion statement clown. ALIEN Superstar duh! What’s really sad is that a white woman had the audacity to reach out to Neal Beyonces hairstylist she was from TMZ to say that the fans are saying that she wants to be white and she wanted to get a statement about it from Neal.. lWell that made, my blood boil, that this white woman felt so entitled to discuss her blackness. What’s really most disappointing is that the some Black people yes you bozos that’s on social media. Lying and faking and acting like you’re so ignorant that you don’t understand That black women have worn platinum hair since the Etta James days. I just went and looked at all the beautiful talented black celebrities who have worn platinum hair and it has been just about everyone of them at one time or another. Are they all trying to be white? I am sick and tired of people attacking her.”
Following Tina calling out those diminishing her daughter, users had much to say regarding her recent comments.
One user named @MJFINESSELOVER wrote, “I’m glad Mama Trina DRAGGED all of the bozos and losers, who were accusing Beyonce of bleaching her skin, and also TMZ for having the audacity to even reach out to Beyonce’s stylist for comment on this nonsense. She has had enough of ya’ll attacking her daughter. Smh.”
Fellow Celebs Offer Outpouring Support
As Tina vouched for her daughter, the Knowles matriarch was met with an outpour of support from many including actress KeKe Palmer, LaTavia Roberson, Octavia Spencer, and more.
Keke wrote:
“I love you so much Ms. Tina! She deserves to be protected in this way!”
Former Destiny’s Child member LaTavia chimed in and wrote:
“Educate them, they always try to break the Black Woman especially one they feel intimidated by. The true definition of a protector.” Lastly, Octavia Spencer wrote, “You have raised beautiful, intelligent black, PROUD TO BE BLACK women. Period. Anyone who says otherwise has their own issues to deal with. I’m sorry you’ve come across the negative comments that people don’t realize is a reflection of how they feel about themselves.”
‘Not Black Enough?
This narrative has sparked conversations about the challenges Black artists face, where the most prominent figures are often questioned about their “Blackness.”
For numerous years, Queen Bey has constantly emphasized and celebrated her Black identity, utilizing the powerful platform she has garnered. From her early solo career to the present, Beyoncé has consistently been a prominent advocate for the Black community.
One notable instance is her 2016 Super Bowl performance, where she paid homage to the late Michael Jackson and the Black PantherParty while delivering a powerful rendition of her single, “Formation.” During this time, she faced scrutiny, even being questioned about whether she was “Black enough” to undertake such a performance.
Queen Bey Has Always Embraced Her Blackness
Beyoncé’s creation of Lemonade further exemplified her commitment to portraying and honoring Black culture in the critically acclaimed film.
Additionally, the iconic 2018 Coachella performance, famously known as “Beychella,” stands as another testament to the iconic singer’s dedication to pushing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) culture to the forefront, celebrating the richness of Black tradition.
Showing consistency in her craft, Bey’s album The Gift and the accompanying film,Black Is King, emerged as a spinoff from the live-action adaptation of The Lion King, where it not only featured numerous Black and African artists but also highlighted the essence of African Traditional Religions.
Then, in her latest project, Renaissance, the “Run The World” singer continues to cast a spotlight on the Black community, specifically the Black queer community, celebrating the depth in both her album and the accompanying film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.
Michael Jackson Too?
Similarly, the late great Michael Jackson was no stranger to scrutiny regarding his Blackness.
Despite his physical Black appearance, Jackson’s skin underwent transformation due to the skin disorder called Vitiligo, leaving him to become lighter than he was. However many believed Michael “bleached” his skin because he wanted to appear as White and that he “hated” his racial identity.
He addressed these speculations during a 1994 interview with Oprah Winfrey, expressing his frustration with the spread of false narratives. The King Of Pop stated:
“I have a skin disorder the pigmentation of my skin. It is something I cannot help. When people make up stories that I don’t want to be who I am, it hurts me. It’s a problem for me. I can’t control it.”
Dr. Umar Calls Out Rappers
While some individuals question the Blackness of prominent figures like Beyoncé, others within the black community have taken a different stance. Dr. Umar Johnson, for example, criticized certain rappers for promoting philanthropy while still rapping about violence, highlighting the hypocrisy within the hip-hop industry.
The legend of Michael Jackson is ever-growing. The King of Pop’s “Beat It” music video has passed the one billion views mark on YouTube. According to Billboard, “Beat It” is the third video of MJ’s to enter the Billion Views Club, following “Billie Jean” and “They Don’t Care About Us.”
You can see the video below.
Earlier this year, Jackson’s estate filed their yearly documents for presiding over The King of Pop’s legacy, which included the costs incurred over the year. One of which was a $2,500 payment for the restoration of the landmark.
On the documents, the star’s work is listed as a charity.
According to Variety, in February, Michael Jackson‘s estate is finalizing a deal worth between $800-900 million dollars for the late artist’s music catalog. While there are not very many details on the deal, Sony and another possible financial partner are looking to buy 50% of the estate’s interest in Jackson’s publishing, music revenues, the “MJ: The Musical” Broadway show, and the upcoming “Michael” biopic “Michael, and maybe even more.
Sources close to MJ’s estate told TMZ they would never sell 100% of the catalog. They said that the only way that even a 50/50 deal would work was if they still retained 100% management and control of the record.
If this deal goes through, it will become the biggest music catalog purchase in history. It would surpass Bruce Springsteen, who sold his catalog for $500 million to Sony.
This news comes just a week after MJ’s nephew Jaafar Jackson was announced as the lead in the Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael Jackson biopic Michael. “I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon,” he wrote on Twitter following the announcement.
There are a lot of albums you can debate as the greatest of all time. However, to pick one is near impossible. Especially, with everyone having different tastes, there will never be a consensus best LP across the music landscape. However, many throughout the world have enjoyed this album for decades and decades. In fact, this project has been out since 1982 and it is still being listened to even now. We are referencing the King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s sixth album, Thriller. The tape will officially turn 40 years old on November 30. It is a timeless classic, one that we can truly say has stood the test of time.
According to AllHipHop, Thriller debuted at number one and astoundingly remained at the top for 37 weeks. The 1980’s classic is now the 10th project to accomplish this feat as well. Other artists who have done this include Pink Floyd, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Journey, Metallica, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Eminem, Bruno Mars, Guns N’ Roses and Nirvana. The crazy stats are not finished yet, though.
Michael’s magnum opus is in second place for weeks spent at the top of the throne. The only other LP to be there longer was West Side Story‘s soundtrack (1961). That was there for 54 weeks, but honestly, there is no shame in that. When you boast tracks such as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and “P.Y.T.,” it is hard to not be proud of your album.
What are your initial thoughts on Michael Jackson’s Thriller spending 600 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart? Does this solidify Michael as the greatest pop star of all time? Which song is your favorite on the record? Is “Thriller” the greatest pop song ever made? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest breaking news around Michael Jackson, as well as everything else going on around the music world.
The last minute of the five-minute masterpiece finds Drake on the roof of what is later revealed to be “October’s Very Own Arena,” which is Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena temporary rebranded name for Drake’s hometown It’s All A Blur Tour shows. He does Jackson’s signature spin move to correspond with his “Beat It” reference as he raps, “N****s talkin’ ’bout when this gon’ be repeated / What the f*ck, bro? I’m one away from Michael / N***a, beat it, n***a, beat it, what?”
Drake does Michael Jackson’s signature dance move in the “First Person Shooter” music video. https://t.co/CmQywZndCG
As pointed out by Camilla Ruud on X (formerly known as Twitter), Drake also had the floor light up below him, à la Jackson’s video for “Billie Jean.” After Drake completes his spin, he’s wearing an MJ glove and jacket.
Drake copied Michael Jackson’s HIStory teaser in his latest music video ft J Cole . Plus had the floor light up like in Billie Jean. He is also wearing the glove and the jacket, and tries to dance like MJ. https://t.co/N9UmQ1MUGl
As pointed out above, the song in which he rapped about being “one away from Michael” ironically became the one that tied him with Michael. The hook of “First Person Shooter” also spawned the title of Drake and J. Cole’s newly announced joint 2024 tour,It’s All A Blur Tour — Big As The What?
