Mental Health Advice from Hip-hop Celebs

Mental Health Advice from Hip hop Celebs

Being a celebrity definitely has its perks, but it also has its downsides too. From grueling tour schedules to online cyber bullying, celebrities are not immune to mental health struggles. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Day in October, we have compiled some of the best advice for promoting positive mental health from some of the industry’s biggest names.

Beyoncé: Took a break and came back better than ever

Beyoncé has been working full-time since she was a teenager, so it’s no surprise that she became so overwhelmed with a grueling schedule that she needed a little break. In an interview, she recalls how in January 2010, “it was beginning to get fuzzy — I couldn’t even tell which day or which city I was at. I would sit there at ceremonies and they would give me an award and I was just thinking about the next performance.” She stated that her mother was very persistent in telling her that she had to take care of her mental health. She took a year off of making music and spent the time traveling and relaxing and came back fresh and renewed a year later to make a series of chart-topping albums. While taking an entire year off of work probably isn’t an option for most people, taking a break is one of the best things a person can do for their mental health.

Joyner Lucas: Used music as his creative outlet to manage struggles with an ADHD diagnosis

Joyner Lucas has long been an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness and has also used his ADHD diagnosis as what he describes as “a reverse uno card.” In an interview with Billboard, he stated that he embraced his own attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder as a tool to unlock creativity, so much so he named his 2020 debut album after it. To date, the album has sold over half a million copies and is RIAA-certified gold. The artist has publicly acknowledged that while ADHD has presented him and others with certain challenges, a mental health condition does not need to limit one’s opportunities in life.

Miley Cyrus: Speaks out about removing the stigma of receiving professional help

Miley Cyrus has also been an advocate from mental health and emphasizes the importance of therapy, stating that “every person can benefit from talking to somebody.” The “Flowers” singer also publicly acknowledged that she has taken medicine to treat her depression and wants other people to know that there is no shame in receiving professional medical help for their mental health.

Nicki Minaj: Ensures fans they are not alone

Many people who are struggling with mental health often feel isolated and alone, which only furthers their pain in many cases. Nicki Minaj uses her platform to let others suffering from mental health issues know that they are not alone. Minaj, who has spoken out in the past about how she was so low at one point in her life that she contemplated suicide, took time to mention the importance of mental health at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards while accepting the Video Vanguard award. She stated: “I wish that people understood what they meant and what they were going through. I wish people took mental health seriously, even for the people who you think have perfect lives.” To many, it probably does seem like Minaj has the perfect life. However, she makes a good point that what is shown to the public and on social media is often not a reflection of people’s realities- something everyone can keep in mind before scrolling Instagram and comparing their lives to others.

Big Sean: Keeps it real

Big Sean has often spoken publicly about his own long-held depression and anxiety publicly, explaining that he wanted to “keep it real” because he “was tired of not keeping it real,” he said in an interview in 2021. “I was tired of pretending I was a machine and everything was cool and being politically correct or whatever. I just was like, I’m a just say how I feel.” He hopes that his advice will transcend to fans and their own lives, stating that “whatever they can apply to their life and better themselves and maybe it just even starts a whole journey in a different direction as far as upgrading and taking care of themselves and bossing up themselves.” In a separate interview, he stated how I’m the past he rarely took time to take care of himself and noted that nurturing himself is now a high priority for him- as it should be for everyone.

Doja Cat: Owned her ADHD diagnosis

Like Joyner Lucas, Doja Cat has also talked about how she struggles with ADHD and in an interview, stating that she felt like she “was stuck in one spot and everybody else was progressing constantly.” The “Paint the Town Red” singer learned to channel her creativity into her music and now has progressed to one of the top-selling female artists of her generation. Her advice reminds people that no one progresses in the exact same way and it’s important to not compare your own journey to the journey of others.

Michelle Williams: Stresses the importance of faith, family and friends

Michelle Williams took time from songwriting to write her own memoir about her struggles, “Checking In: How Getting Real About Depression Saved My Life — and Can Save Yours.” In the book, she opens up about her years-long struggle with depression and details how she had suicidal thoughts. She concludes with the importance of prioritizing one’s mental health as well as describes the important role that faith, family and friends play in each other’s mental health journeys.

Jennifer Lopez: Emphasizes self-care, health, and rest

After experiencing an stress-induced panic attack in her late 20s brought on by too much work and not enough sleep, Jennifer Lopez describes how she learn to prioritize her mental health and self-care. She has also stated the importance of exercising, eating healthy, and getting adequate rest, which is great advice if whether you’re performing at the Super Bowl halftime show or working a desk job.

Billie Eilish: Removing stigma and embracing your own uniqueness

Billie Eilish has been under public scrutiny before she was even old enough to drive. In an interview with Vogue, she describes how she struggles with Tourette’s syndrome as well as how she has experienced body dysmorphia in the past, stating how she used to compare herself to models and felt that she was never skinny or pretty enough. Despite her struggles, Eilish broke into the industry and skyrocketed to the top with her own unique sound and look- both of which are constantly evolving. She hopes that Gen Z will be more open to talking about mental health and removing the stigma associated with it. She’s also a living example of how a person’s uniqueness can be the best thing about them.

Kendrick Lamar: Learning to accept change and live with grief

Kendrick Lamar has often spoken openly in the past about his struggles with mental health, survivor’s guilt, and grief. The artist, who is well-known for mastering the art of lyric-writing, has used his talent to discuss his mental health struggles with lyrics such as “money can’t stop a suicidal weakness” and “depression is restin’ on your heart,” amongst others. He states that going through change can be exceptionally difficult for anyone and that “accepting change — that’s the hardest thing for man, accepting change.” Studies show that men are far less likely to seek out treatment for their mental health than women, so hopefully male artists like Lamar can show other men that there is no shame in struggling with mental health.

Kid Cudi: Got clean from drugs, focused on mental health

Kid Cudi has shared how he battled with depression and even had suicidal thoughts. In 2016, he shared that he abused drugs as a way of coping with his depression. In 2016, he checked himself into a treatment center for depression and “suicidal urges.” Kid Cudi is a prime example of showing the importance of how getting professional treatment for mental health and substance abuse issues can have a tremendous impact on a person’s life. Following his rehab stay, he came back to continue to make even more chart-topping music.

Memphis-born rapper NLE Choppa took center stage at Kevin Hart’s Hart House at University Park South, hosting “Study Break Sessions.” The event was a delightful mix of serving food to college students and donating 10% of proceeds to LA Promise Fund’s Black College Success Initiative.

During this lively gathering, USC’s Majorette Team performed impressive routines to the rapper’s chart-topping hits, including the latest single, “College Girls.” NLE Choppa also seized the opportunity to spotlight his brand, Eat Virgin Meal Bars, which officially launched earlier this year, alongside Co-Founder Natasha Pestano Rice.

In an episode of “On The Beet With Jermaine Dupri,” NLE Choppa shared his journey towards a vegan lifestyle, motivated by struggles with mental health. The rapper observed the positive impact of plant-based eating on his well-being and decided to embrace veganism fully.

The event celebrated Hart House’s first anniversary and its commitment to providing plant-based, real ingredients to the community. With four locations across LA, including Westchester, Monrovia, Hollywood, and Downtown, Hart House is a beacon of “plant-based for the people.” Their menu showcases a delectable range of plant-based options, from burgers and chick’n sandwiches to salads, nuggets, fries, tots, and milkshakes, all free from antibiotics, hormones, artificial colors, preservatives, or high-fructose corn syrup. NLE Choppa’s partnership with the plant-based chain underscores the growing popularity and importance of plant-based dining in today’s world.

Desiigner Looks Happier Than Ever While Showing Off His New Look

Things have been tough for Desiigner over the past few years. Overall, we came to know the artist thanks to his song “Panda.” Of course, this song was actually sampled by Kanye West, who signed him to GOOD Music. Unfortunately, that partnership wasn’t as fruitful as the artist probably hoped. Ye didn’t do much for his career, and only a couple of projects were released under the imprint. Since that time, the artist has tried to maintain his success, although it has not proven to be easy.

Earlier this year, things went horribly for Desiigner as he was caught pleasuring himself on a plane. It is clear that the artist had been going through a mental health episode. However, that would not absolve him from any sort of consequence. Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that he pleaded guilty to the charges against him. Luckily for the rapper, he will not have to register as a sex offender. While some may disagree with this ruling, others believe it’s fair considering the artist’s mental health problems.

To the surprise of many, he was rocking a new haircut. Desiigner excitedly spoke about his new cut and how he felt like it was the time to change things up. Overall, he appears to be in a good place, which is really great to see. It can be hard to bounce back from something traumatic, but he seems to be doing just that.

Hopefully, Desiigner continues to get better while prioritizing his mental and physical health. Let us know what you think of his new look, in the comments section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for more news and updates from around the music world. We will always keep you informed.

Ne-Yo Seeking Gag Order For His Baby Mama And Wants Court Case Sealed

Screen Shot 2023 10 11 at 8.26.06 PM

Grammy Award winning singer / songwriter Ne-Yo is still in a bitter child support battle with the mother of his two youngest sons, Sade Bagnerise. After questioning if Sade’s second child belonged to him, it was revealed that it was his child. Now Ne-Yo wants a gag order on the case. He feels it would be in the best interest of his children to seal information about his finances, the location of his homes, the amount of child support he will be paying and the entire settlement agreement.

Radar Online reports:

Ne-Yo asked the court to order that his ex Sade Bagnerise not be allowed to speak about their court battle publicly — days before he was found to be the biological father of her 2 sons, RadarOnline.com has learned.

According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, Ne-Yo [real name: Shaffer Smith] pleaded for a confidentiality order and for certain filings to be sealed in his paternity lawsuit.

Last week, the court declared Ne-Yo was the legal father to the 2 children.

RadarOnline.com has obtained the motion that Ne-Yo filed days before the development. He said he is an “international recording artist” which led to the lawsuit being examined closely.

Ne-Yo argued it would be in the best interest of his children to seal information about his finances, the location of his homes, the amount of child support he will be paying and the entire settlement agreement.

Further, he asked that Sade be prohibited from, “discussing the proceedings and any aspect of the proceedings in the media to include but not limited to social media, print media, internet, radio, and or television media in further directives held under the Domestic Relations Standing Order.”

Motorist Arrested After Attacking Philadelphia Mom In Front Of Her Children

car

A 26-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a cell phone video taken Sunday which showed him smashing the back windshield of a woman’s car while her children sat in the car. The woman, Nikki Bullock, 23 and her girlfriend were working making Uber deliveries when they were hit from the back. The crazed motorist then pulled a gun on the woman and then assaulted her in front of her children in Philadelphia.

The motorist hit the woman with his helmet while her children screamed in the back. She knocked over the bike before grabbing one of her screaming children.

Cody Heron, 26, is charged with possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person and aggravated assault, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office said.

“A firearm can be seen falling from the defendant’s waistband before he retrieves the weapon and threatens the victim with it after she confronts him on the street,” the DA said. “Heron head butts her during the confrontation before returning to his vehicle and fleeing the scene.”

“I’m glad my kids are OK. I’m glad nobody got hurt,” Bullock said. “It could have gone way worse than it did. I’m just glad that video is not me dying on the internet.”

‘The Black Chris Hansen’ Boopac Shakur Fatally Shot While Confronting Pedophiles

lee

A Michigan hero was shot and killed when he posed as an underage girl to confront alleged child predators. Robert Lee, 40, of Pontiac, was known as a vigilante “pedophile hunter” who brought light to men who prey on underaged girls online. He often slashed the pedo’s tires to prevent them from fleeing the scene before cops arrive.

Lee, a.k.a. Boopac Shakur, was beloved by his tens of thousands of followers on Facebook. He would often pose as a 15-year-old girl online to catch predators after arranging to meet. His aggressive style was recorded and went viral on Facebook.

Police say he confronted 2 males — ages 22 and 17 — at the Universal Coney Island restaurant in Pontiac around 10:30 p.m. on Friday night.

Lee punched the 17-year-old who pulled a knife. The other male produced a gun and shot Lee multiple times. They fled the restaurant after the shooting, but were later captured by police.

Lee died at a local hospital, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

“There were 2 people at the table, One he was mostly focused on and talking to and became heated with was not the individual who shot him. It was the other person on the opposite side of the table,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard in a statement.

“His one-man crusade has led to the arrest and criminal charges being filed against several men,” Sheriff Bouchard said. “He has also mistakenly identified someone as a sexual predator who was not.”

He added: “While we certainly understand his desire to hold child predators accountable, many times well-intentioned individuals who engaged in this don’t know the standard of evidence required for convictions and often underestimate the potential for violence confronting a suspected predator.”

A GoFundMe for Robert Lee has raised over $7,000 toward his funeral expenses.

[WATCH] Lil Tay Finally Shows Her Face After Years And Addresses Death Hoax

tay2

Last night, Lil Tay popped back up on her Instagram Live and addressed the rumors surrounding her recent death hoax. The Canadian social media influencer hasn’t posted any photos of herself on social media since she hit the spotlight back in 2018. On Aug. 9, a false statement about Tay’s death was shared on her Instagram account. After the news went viral, Tay and her brother later came out and confirmed they were still alive, with Tay saying her IG was “compromised by a 3rd party and used to spread jarring misinformation and rumors regarding me.”

During her Instagram Live session, which can be seen below, Tay cleared the air about her fake death, saying that the misinformation was created so that her father, Christopher Hope, and manager could advertise a new form of currency.

“Chris Hope was the one who did the death hoax,” Lil Tay said. “Meanwhile, he was working with this other con artist that was claiming to be my manager and they had a crypto coin together. Their plan was to fake my death and then promote the crypto coin. Which, by the way, the manager admitted to. He said he’d been working on the crypto coin for months. These people are frauds.”

Lil Tay also went on her YouTube channel and uploaded the official music video for her song “Sucker 4 Green.” In the video, Tay is all grown up as she sits on the side of a pool, standing next to a luxurious car and fancy house. Tay is also seen with her mother and brother in the video,

On Sept. 27, the viral rapper was finally spotted at Los Angeles International Airport dispelling rumors of her death. She was completely covered by a mask, sunglasses and a hoodie.

Singer Lizzo Asks Judge to Dismiss Dancers ‘Ridiculous’ Lawsuit

Lizzo Christmas

Last month three former back-up dancers for pop star Lizzo filed lawsuits accusing her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.
Lizzo’s attorney, Marty Singer claims that newly surfaced photos show Lizzo’s accusers “happily carousing” and “gleefully reveling” backstage with the performers from a topless cabaret show in Paris during Lizzo’s tour. The photos are from March 5, which is about a month after the infamous February visit to Bananenbar in Amsterdam. Now Lizzo is filing to have the case dismissed, calling the claims ridiculous.

Page Six reports:

Lizzo has asked the Los Angeles Superior Court to dismiss the “ridiculous” harassment lawsuits her former employees filed against her this year, Page Six has exclusively learned.

According to court documents we exclusively obtained Thursday, attorneys for the “About Damn Time” singer, 35, list at least 31 lines of defense that explain why the suits should be tossed out.

However, the Grammy winner is also requesting a trial by jury in response to the complaints.

In the new docs, Lizzo denies “each and every allegation” made against her, citing as one of her defenses that her ex-dancers are “guilty of unclean hands,” which is a legal term that accuses the plaintiff of participating in anything “unethical in relation to the subject of the lawsuit.”

Lizzo’s lawyers also point out that the singer’s team had “anti-discrimination and anti- harassment policies and complaint procedures in place,” which they claim the dancers “failed” to make available to themselves so that they could follow proper internal procedures.

“Defendants’ conduct was justified,” the court papers also state.

Lizzo also argues that in her defense there is no proof that her dancers suffered damages or losses because of her conduct and not their own or those of other entities.
