For the second year in a row, Made In America festival will not return to Philadelphia this summer.

Last year’s Made In America festival, during which, SZA and Lizzo were set to headline, was canceled as a result of “severe circumstances outside of production control.” Once again, Made In America announced the news today (April 3) via social media and the festival’s official website that it would not return for 2024.

The announcement came before a 2024 lineup or iteration was even announced. Though the reasoning was rather vague, Made In America says that festival will make a return at some point in the future.

“As purveyors of change, the Made In America executive production team is reimagining a live music experience that affirms our love and dedication to music and the work we do,” read the statement.

You can read the full statement below.

“Made In America will not take place in 2024.

Since its inception, this groundbreaking festival has celebrated music & community – from creating a space for fans to connect, to uplifting local small businesses & shining a light on important causes. It has strived for accessibility, eliminating barriers through affordable tickets and location.

As purveyors of change, the Made In America executive production team is reimagining a live music experience that affirms our love and dedication to music and the work we do.

We promise an exciting return to the festival.”

Jay-Z’s 2023 Made In America Festival Has Been Canceled And Some Have Begun To Speculate About The Reason

The summer music festival season is typically complete without Made In America. Unfortunately, this year the Philadelphia area will have to find a way to manage as the coveted multiday event has been canceled. The festival was set to occur across Labor Day weekend (September 2 and 3) with headliners Lizzo, SZA, Latto, and more.

The organizer took to the festival’s official Instagram page to break the news in a statement that reads, “Due to severe circumstances outside of production control, the 2023 Made In America festival will no longer occur. This decision has been difficult and has not been made lightly nor without immense deliberation. Made in America has a legacy of delivering exceptional experiences for music fans and concertgoers, and it is our commitment to always deliver a top-tier festival experience.”

Despite the lengthy statement, users online have begun to speculate about their perceived reasoning behind the call. “We already know about the circumstances in question,” wrote one user, subtly referencing Lizzo’s hostile workplace environment lawsuit.

“I think we know what happened. :/. Sadly,” chimed in another.

Award-winning Philadelphia-based journalist Ernest Owens was much more direct with his thoughts, writing, “I’m willing to bet that the Made In America cancellation is probably connected to Lizzo. She was their headline draw this year.”

Others began to call for the festival to continue with Lizzo. “Why couldn’t they just get rid of Lizzo? Because we all know what the circumstances are… replace her if they really have to but keep SZA,” wrote a user.

Another echoed the sentiment: “They should have replaced Lizzo and moved full steam ahead. So many people depend on that festival for a large amount of their income for the year because of the timing and where it is positioned.”

Organizers of the festival have not paid the speculation any attention. Instead, in their note, they promised to return next year bigger than ever. “We look forward to returning to Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the great city of Philadelphia in 2024,” read the note.

The organizer did, however, confirm that refunds would be issued to all ticket holders.

The special set won’t be Cam’ron and Mase’s first time on the stage together in recent years after the two made amends last summer. In January, they took to the stage in New York City to perform their hit “Horse & Carriage” for the very first time live nearly 25 years after its release.

They have also been hosting the show, It Is What It Is, for several months now. On the program, they discuss a wide range of topics relating to the major sports. Cam’ron recently explained the decision to bring Mase in for the show during an interview with Good Day New York.

The Made In America Lineup

“Mase got me my first record deal, ever,” he recalled. “So doing this show and creating this show and having him be a part of it, it felt like I’m giving back to him for helping me even be an entertainer. I may not have been where I’m at if [Ma$e] didn’t take me to Biggie Smalls [The Notorious B.I.G.] and get me my first record deal… I wanted to pay him back, and hopefully, this show will do that.” Cam’ron and Mase infamously had a falling out in the 2000s and went on to trade multiple diss tracks about each other. They eventually made amends in 2022.

SZA And Lizzo Set To Headline Made In America Fest

Made In American Festival has officially confirmed the lineup for its 2023 rendition. The beloved Philly festival will return in September and is headlined by a pair of good friends. R&B stars SZA and Lizzo will serve as the festival’s joint headliners in a move that has fans buzzing with anticipation. Both artists are coming off hit 2022 albums. Lizzo dropped Special her long-awaited follow-up to 2019’s Cuz I Love You in July of last year. SZA arguably returned with even more anticipation when she dropped her first new album in 5 years SOS in December. Both artists have also had major hit songs with Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” and SZA’s “Kill Bill” each reaching the top of the charts.

The two artists have long been both friends and musical collaborators. Earlier this year SZA joined a remix of Lizzo’s song “Special” off her new album. In fact, just yesterday SZA came to Lizzo’s defense online against those who critique her body image. “I be wondering where all the virtue signaling ,well spoken sh*t talking , internet warriors are when someone genuine needs defending . Where the f*ck do y’all be at for lizzo ? Do y’all actually know how to support others or only tear them down,” her tweet read.

The two R&B darlings are far from the only highlights in the festival’s lineup. Alongside SZA and LIzzo are Miguel, Tems, Metro Boomin, Ice Spice, Coi Leray, Latto, Lil Yachty, Doechii, and more. In addition to the regular lineup, the festival will also feature a special performance from Mase and Cam’Ron. Former Made In America headliners include Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Bad Bunny, and Tyler, The Creator.

For SZA, it’s another stop in a busy year she’s having following her return to the spotlight. After releasing a remix with Doja Cat, she scored her first number-one hit with “Kill Bill.” While that’s the only official new material she’s released so far this year rumors about a SOS deluxe album have been swirling for months. What do you think of Made In America’s lineup? Let us know in the comment section below.

Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” Lawsuit Dismissed

A judge just dismissed a lawsuit concerning Childish Gambino’s acclaimed 2018 track, “This Is America.” Moreover, rapper Kidd Wes (real name Emelike Wesley Nwosuocha) filed suit in 2021. He claimed that the song infringed on his 2016 cut “Made In America.” According to documents obtained by Pitchfork, a judge in New York federal court dismissed the motion on Friday (March 24) with prejudice to leave to amend. Furthermore, Kidd Wes’ attorneys stated that he is considering an appeal. In addition, this news on Donald Glover’s previous hit comes after he made a musical return with the EP for his new series “Swarm.”

“Mr. Nwosuocha is understandably disappointed, and is considering an appeal of the decision,” attorneys Imran H. Ansari and La’Shawn N. Thomas stated to the music-based publication. “He stands by his music, creativity, and the independence of grassroots artists to create their own music, and receive credit where credit is due, without the fear of it being apportioned by another.” However, Judge Victor Marrero pointed out that Wes failed to register a compositional copyright in addition to that of his sound recording.

Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”

“Even if Nwosuocha had a copyright registration for the composition of Plaintiff’s Composition, however, dismissal would be warranted here because the elements of Plaintiff’s Composition purportedly infringed upon are insufficiently original to warrant protection, or because they are not substantially similar to the Challenged Composition,” the dismissal read. “More could be said on the ways these songs differ, but no more airtime is needed to resolve this case.” Regarding that last part, the judge referred to differences in lyrics and each song’s themes.

Also, many of Glover’s collaborators on the track also faced repercussions for their role in “This Is America.” In addition to the “Atlanta” series creator, the suit named co-writer Young Thug and producer Lüdwig Goransson. Various record and publishing companies were also codefendants in this lawsuit. Moreover, Pitchfork sought comment from Gambino’s camp, but no such statements have come as of writing this article. Regardless, return to HNHH for the latest on Donald Glover and his musical alter-ego, which is apparently coming back soon.
