Mike Shabb Confirms Earl Sweatshirt Collab, Talks Nicholas Craven Partnership & “Sewaside III”

Quebec’s rap scene is as niche as it gets but don’t get it twisted: the talent shouldn’t be overlooked, and Mike Shabb is at the forefront. His French-centric bars fused Caribbean cadences with spacey, psychedelic post-Soundcloud rap production that captured the youthful essence of growing up in Montreal’s Hochelaga neighborhood. And while much of that laid the foundation for his Quebec-centric base, it’s actually his production that garnered significant attention from South of the border.

After landing production credits on Westside Gunn’s “Switches On Everything” (and apparently, Michelle Records), Mike Shabb’s stock went all the way up. He became a proponent of the drumless sample sound, which his close friend and collaborator, Nicholas Craven, specializes in. Shadow Moses, their 2023 collaborative project, captures the essence of their chemistry. However, it’s hard not to deny how their working relationship and friendship extended to Mike Shabb’s latest project, Sewaside III, which boasts a few Craven beats as well as some of his close collaborators, such as Boldy James.

“[Nicholas Craven and I] probably spent $1,000 every time we go up in this shit, trying to find the best sh*t we can. That’s hip-hop, bro. Like, that’s what we grew up on and shit,” Shabb told HotNewHipHop ahead of his performance at Festival D’Été De Quebec. “That’s why I feel like we’re special because we keeping the original recipe, we rocking it up a little bit.”

Just hours before Nas was set to take the stage (weather concerns forced the festival to cancel the Queensbridge legend’s performance), Mike Shabb delivered a high-energy performance alongside Nicholas Craven on the ones and twos and Trapmat as his hypeman. Before his performance, Mike Shabb chopped it up with HNHH to discuss his latest project, Sewaside III, his relationship with Earl Sweatshirt, and so much more.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

HotNewHipHop: How are you feeling before the show?

Mike Shabb: It’s an amazing opportunity, I ain’t gon’ hold you. This is my first time here. Not my first time in Quebec but my first time at FEQ and sh*t so it’s big, bro. It’s a huge opportunity. It’s probably going to be my biggest show.

And, you’re basically opening ahead of Nas.

That’s a blessing, bro. I grew up on Nas and sh*t. That’s one of my favorite rappers of all time. It’s an honor, bro. It’s crazy.

It’s dope because I see you as someone at the forefront of Quebecois rap.

Especially in English, but like, yeah, and I mean, I feel like the music is kind of – not the same, but like, same essence and all that so yeah, that should that should definitely gon’ work. It gon’ work, for sure. It’s gon’ be fire.

You’re bilingual, too, right? Like, you also rap in French?

I try to slip a couple of lines here and there but it’s like, bro, the thing with me is I grew up like fully French, bro. I had to learn English like with the music and shit. And then, I grew up with so many like English music type sh*t. I was like, “Yo, if I make music, it gotta be in English,” you feel me? At first, I started rapping [when] I was like 15. My English wasn’t even that good at this time. I was still doing it because I was like, “Yo, this is what I want to do” and shit, then I just got used to it. I made a whole lot of English friends in my city so that helped me a lot, also. But yeah, well I was born – I’m a lil’ French Canadian boy, man.

You’re from the East Side too, right?

I’m from the East Side of Montreal.

And that’s usually the more French side.

It’s all French. All French and Haitian. [I’m] half Haitian, half French Canadian.

Yeah, I’m closer West so it’s a lot more English.

For real, Montreal is so weird because it’s basically like two cities in one, you feel me? You got the whole English side then you got the French side but it’s like all in the same. And everybody understands each other so it’s like – it’s a blessing. Montreal is crazy. It’s an amazing city.

Sewaside III just dropped and it feels like a triumphant release for you after such a prolific run these past few years. Can you tell me a bit about the process behind this album including the features and how this project reflects your growth as an artist?

Damn, that’s a good-ass question, bro. I guess I was just trying to make the music I felt like doing at that moment. And then it was like – everything fell in place perfectly, bro. Since I linked up with Craven and sh*t, I’ve been going on trips with him. I’ve been going to Detroit with him, New York. So I met a lot of people through him. That’s how I met Boldy [James], Navy [Blue] and all that.  It just came naturally, bro, like the features and all that. N***as is just genuinely fucking with me, bro. So I was like let’s do it. Then, as far as the concept for the album – I don’t know, bro. It’s what I’ve been going through for the past years and shit. What I’ve seen, what I’ve heard. Bro, this shit is like – this is my life my whole life in one album, basically. Like all my pains, all that shit. So that’s what I worked like maybe like a year on that sh*t. I made, maybe, 30 songs in a year and I kept 17, and that’s the album. I ain’t even make that much music. Every song I made, I was like “yeah, this got to be the one.” So yeah, that’s how it came about, bro. Sewaside III, that’s just like… I think that’s my best album. My most complete album and sh*t. That’s not even the end. I’m about to drop Sewaside 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Did you do the features in person?

Most of them I did in person. The Boldy James one, Craven was there. He recorded it for me because he was in Detroit with Boldy. I couldn’t be there so I was like “Yo, get my shit!” And he did, though. Everything went smooth, though. Like, I ain’t felt like I had to rush n***as or anything like that. Sh*t just came naturally and now it’s out. And, it’s a beautiful project. I’m proud of it.

Even working with Nicholas Craven on Shadow Moses, the sound itself is boom-bap –

It’s sample-based music, bro! Everything got to be sampled. Like, me and [Nicholas Craven], we go to the record store shit, we probably spent $1,000 every time we go up in this shit, trying to find the best sh*t we can. That’s hip-hop, bro. Like, that’s what we grew up on and shit. And I feel like producers nowadays don’t even do that anymore because everything is digital. That’s why I feel like we’re special because we keeping the original recipe, we rocking it up a little bit. So it sounds actually actual.

You guys have amazing chemistry together. Like, you never miss a beat but I read that Complex interview where you said that you guys don’t even really work on music together.

That’s what I’m saying. Like, man, me and Craven, we basically really good friends, bro. It’s not even about music at this point. But I mean, he got a name, I got a name, so why wouldn’t we? [laughs]

As a producer yourself, I wanted to know how the creative flow for you differs from being behind the board to working with Craven where he’s kind of – I’m not sure if your process is always him taking the lead in that sense or if it’s more collaborative.

I’m so picky with beats, bro.  Exactly, because I make my own beats most of the time. So it’s like, I’d be trying to pick stuff that resonates with me, but like sometimes I gotta go to 1000 beats before I find like five. So basically, that’s how Shadow Moses came about, bro. That n***a played me like to 200-300 beats. I picked six, I said “yeah, that’s gonna be the album,” and we did it. But like as far as me [and] the way I do my music, basically bro, I’ll start making a beat and shit, and then I’ll know it. I’ll know exactly when. I’ll be like, “Yo, yeah, this the one right there. I got to rap on this sh*t right now.” So that’s how I work. I basically make the beat first. Like, my little ideas and sh*t. And then I’ll just go and write, write, write some stuff, or punch in on the mic or whatever. And then I’ll play around with the beat afterward and shit. I feel like that’s how you make like complete songs and shit. You do your first step, it’s like you got to make the beat, and then you got to rap all that shit. And then you can add little details and shit around the beat to make that shit, you know what I’m sayin’?

I have to ask about the Earl Sweatshirt co-sign. How’s that relationship developed? And have there been any discussions of collaborations in the future?

Bro, I don’t even remember how it came about, for real. I feel like I had posted a snippet one day on Instagram. And that n***a like, straight up – bro, he straight up DM’d me or some “Yo, you hard as f*ck. I keep running that.” He was talking about the “Buckshot Flow 93’” song and then he was talking about the “‘83 Beatstreet,” those two songs he was like, “Yo, I keep running this sh*t.” And I was like, “Yo, bro it’s 100,” because obviously, I grew up on Earl, bro, like, the whole Odd Future shit bro…  That sh*t had me in a headlock! Bro, I used to walk around with them long-ass socks and sh*t, bucket hats, all that because of them. Ophelia like I bro I used to walk fucking long as such fucking has all that because of them.

Basically, when he hit me up and shit, I was like, “oh, that’s big, man.” And he gave me his phone number and shit. I talked to him on the phone. We text sometimes and sh*t.  He’s a real good dude, for real. And then he went on the fucking the interview, the podcast and sh*t, and then, bro, I seen him. You seen it, right? He was going through his phone. And he was like, “Oh, Mike Shabb, I f*ck with Shabb.” I was like, that’s crazy. Yeah, he just blessed me right there. I earned like 1000 followers on Instagram in the hour, bro.

I f*ck with Earl, bro. And definitely we got some sh*t coming. I can’t tell you when but it’s coming. It’s coming, for sure. Me and Earl got some some sh*t coming, for sure.

Kevin Durant, Earl, Joe Budden – all these people checking you out. What do you think this means for Montreal’s music scene at large?

To be honest, bro, I feel like it’s a wonderful thing. I don’t know if Montreal people realize it, like how big that shit is. But like, it’s gonna come naturally. And then, it’s a blessing for me before anything else, so I just got to keep on doing what I do. If it’s good for me, then it’s good for the city, you feel me? That’s basically it.

Final question: you mentioned that Sewaside 4, 5, and 6 are on the way but is there anything else you’re working on that we could expect from you before the end of the year?

I’m working on some more trap shit right now, I ain’t gon’ hold you, you know I’m saying? Like I did my part in the drumless scene, now I’m trying to get back to my old sh*t. But yeah, definitely gonna drop another tape and shit. Maybe, by the end of the summer. [I] already got like 20 songs stacked up. We ain’t stoppin’, bro. This sh*t never stops. I’m just gonna keep applying pressure and do what I do. Some real shit. Yeah, we definitely dropping some more sh*t in 2024.

DJ Akademiks & Joe Budden Lead The Pack In Complex’s Hip-Hop Media Power Ranking

Every year, Complex publishes its editorial list of the biggest figures in hip-hop media for that timespan, and 2024 saw the return of last year’s titans… in reverse order. Moreover, DJ Akademiks got the top spot over Joe Budden, who had topped the list last year with Ak at number two. This year, Budden came in second, and other names on the ranking include Anthony Fantano, Sway Calloway, Angela Yee, Trap Lore Ross, Charlamagne Tha God, Van Lathan, Big Boy, Bootleg Kev, and even artists like Lil Yachty and Rory. Regardless of what your personal ranking might look like, you can’t deny that all these folks are worthy of the accolade to some degree.

“The unofficial birth of CNN and the 24-hour news cycle came with the Gulf War. The unofficial birth of DJ Akademiks as the No. 1 figure in hip-hop media came with the Kendrick Lamar and Drake rap war,” Complex‘s Dimas Sanfiorenzo wrote of the streamer and podcaster. “If Budden was there (a couple of days later) to help fans deconstruct the latest diss songs between Dot and Drake, Ak was the figure you celebrated with at the moment. It’s the benefit, of course, to always being on, a tactic Ak has mastered over the years.”

Complex‘s 2024 Hip-Hop Media Ranking

“Nearly 10 years after he started his podcast, Joe Budden’s role as an elder statesman of new rap media is indisputable,” Complex‘s Kia Turner wrote of the Slaughterhouse MC. “The Joe Budden Podcast… has become appointment listening (and viewing) for millennials seeking their weekly dosage of sophisticated ignorance, industry insider talk, diabolical cultural opinions, and passionate rants. Joe Budden has the gall, larger-than-life persona, industry connections, and humor to tackle a wide spectrum of topics in diverse ways, from vitriolic intensity to light-hearted bemusement.”

Meanwhile, we’re sure that all of these media figures will have plenty more great content and coverage to share in rap music for the rest of the year. After all, DJ Akademiks got back on a Kendrick Lamar and Drake rant to claim that the pgLang camp is “milking” this feud too far. We’re sure that Joe Budden and company have their own views on the matter, and that discourse extends to every other corner of hip-hop. We’ll see whether 2024 holds other hot names, new challengers, and legendary returns for the culture’s media, and you can check out Complex‘s full list and their write-ups by clicking the “Via” link down below.

Joe Budden Delivers Controversial Hot Take On Drake Fans

Joe Budden is someone who has consistently been critical of Drake. However, he has also been extremely complimentary of the artist whenever it has been deserved. Overall, the two aren’t exactly on the best of terms. There have been plenty of instances in which Drake has gone after Joe and vice versa. Throughout the Kendrick Lamar beef, that has been especially true. Budden has been immensely critical of Drizzy, especially due to his recent features and social media antics.

In a recent interview, Joe was asked about his thoughts on Drake and the rapper’s fanbase. This subsequently led to an interesting response that some may not appreciate all that much. “If you’re talking to a Drake fan, that don’t mean you’re talking to a Hip Hop fan,” Budden said. Of course, the point here is obvious. Joe is saying that Drake has a lot of crossover fans. These fans aren’t always into hip-hop but love Drake for his pop records.

Joe Budden Offers Some Perspective

Budden haters may misinterpret his words and claim that Drake fans as a whole don’t like hip-hop. That would be a ridiculous misread. Instead, Joe is simply pointing out the reality that some Drake fans don’t even care about rap beef. In fact, they may have never heard a Kendrick Lamar song before. Regardless, because it is Joe saying this, some may act defensively. Although when you think about it, this is not a new analysis of the legendary Canadian megastar.

Let us know what you think about this take from Joe Budden, in the comments section down below. Do you agree that a lot of Drake fans don’t care about hip-hop as a whole? How do you feel about Joe’s consistent takes on Drizzy? Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. Joe Budden Draws Backlash For His Domestic Violence Comments & His Past Accusations

Joe Budden doesn’t just give out hot takes on hip-hop: he also speaks on wider societal issues, for better or worse. Moreover, he recently sat down with the BagFuel podcast to speak on his perspective on domestic violence and abusive relationships, particularly when it relates to a man suffering from them. However, many folks online pointed out that the rapper and media personality has his own history when it comes to allegations of perpetrating these crimes. Nevertheless, he spoke from his own perspective and viewpoint when it comes to his struggles with toxic partnerships, addressing the dangers of gender standards regardless of how folks will respond to his point of view.

I was in a domestic violence relationship, but we men, so we don’t know that,” Joe Budden posited. “We don’t know that if somebody just gets up and starts [saying], ‘Hey, you got a text I didn’t like. I’m burning all your clothes.’ That’s domestic violence… I had an incident one time where me and a lady broke up, and I took the phone back that I bought and was actively paying the bill for. Charges. Charges brought up. I didn’t know that [was stealing] so that was a lesson like, ‘Oh, okay. If there’s a dispute, you can’t tough the phone, even if you bought or got it.’”

Joe Budden Speaks On Domestic Violence In Abusive Relationships

Regarding Joe Budden’s accusations, his ex-partner Esther Baxter claimed that he caused her to have a miscarriage by allegedly sitting on her stomach during an altercation. Also, his ex Tahiry Jose called him out for supposed hypocrisy when he condemned the video of Diddy assaulting Cassie. “FOH, who??? The irony. This is so triggering!!!” she expressed on social media. “I remember joey throwing me down a flight of stairs dragging me back into the house & me having to talk him into letting me go. FOR HOURS!!!!

“This whole s**t took me out,” Jose continued. “So hard to watch. So sorry for Cassie and every other woman who is currently going through it or has ever gone through it. It’s tough.” “Tahiry you are a lying, failed gold digger that has abused, targeted and manipulated many men,” Joe Budden responded. “Outside of me you lack an identity which is why you’ve tried desperately to attach yourself to me for over 15 years. The last time i saw you i purchased a mattress from you and you were happy you made the sale, you were fine then.”

Joe Budden Can’t Help But Vibe Out To Drake’s Collab With Camila Cabello

As much as Joe Budden might have a problem with Drake on many levels, he’s also often conceded that he likes a lot of his material, that he respects him as a rapper, and that it’s a pretty complicated relationship. If you want proof of that, look no further than his latest podcast episode reaction to the 6ix God’s new collaboration with Camila Cabello on her album C,XOXO. Moreover, maybe folks mostly remember Joe’s thoughts on Drizzy through the lens of the recent Kendrick Lamar beef. While he might not always like Aubrey when he acts tough, he does like him with the melodies pretty often.

Furthermore, you can see from The Joe Budden Podcast‘s general reaction to “HOT UPTOWN” that not everyone was as impressed and into it as the titular host. “That’s enough, that’s enough,” Budden said of the Drake collaboration about a minute into it. “We don’t need to hear no more of that. Who don’t know that that’s a hit? Who don’t know that that’s going to take the game where it needs to be? Come on, for the summertime? Coming off of the beef? Perfect thing to do.”

The Joe Budden Podcast Reacts To Drake’s Camila Cabello Collabs

Elsewhere during The Joe Budden Podcast‘s discussion, they spoke on how Drake took things back to a lot of his earlier breezy hits and catchiness. Some folks were “thrown off” by this approach, but the consensus was mostly positive, especially when considering it in a summer context. It’s similar to how folks responded to this and the “Uugly” interlude online: some appreciate the melodic approach, others praise it in a back-handed manner, and some people are just haters. The way the cookie crumbles.

Meanwhile, we wonder if these new Drake tracks will impact folks’ current discussion around who is the better rapper between him and Kendrick Lamar. We definitely know that Joe Budden feels pretty confident in the latter, but rap artists don’t always have to be lyrical masterminds to get praise. No matter how much we play this song in the summer, it’s exciting to move forward for both of these artists. Despite their decade-plus-long run, platforms like The Joe Budden Podcast show that folks are still very excited about what they have to offer in any capacity.

Queenzflip Returns to The JBP, Reveals Heated Argument with Joe Budden Led to Hiatus

After being missing for nearly a month, Queenzflip returned to The Joe Budden Podcast. In the middle of episode 736, Flip revealed he was on hiatus after an argument with Budden.

“We had a big argument, I mean 90 minutes of it. But he was the aggressor in this one. I ain’t gonna lie. People can agree. He was saying some crazy things to me,” Queenzflip said.

Budden responded with, “Which I apologized for. That was wrong of me.”

He would go on to reveal he got a call from Budden’s business partner, Ian, alerting him he had audio of the conversation. Ian asked Flip to “sit down for a little bit.” Flip stated he was unsure if he was still going to be paid during his break, but Budden revealed he did remain on payroll.

The two revealed they made amends, and everything was great, leading to his return. But with Budden’s shaky cohost history, fans were understandably concerned. You can hear all the details below.

DJ Akademiks Claps Back At Joe Budden For Telling Him To Stop Covering Drake & Kendrick Lamar

DJ Akademiks says he refuses to stop covering Drake and his feud with Kendrick Lamar after Joe Budden and others in hip-hop media suggested he do so. Discussing Ak’s bias towards the Toronto rapper on a recent episode of his podcast, Budden argued that no one is buying what he’s been selling. “Ak is the one on stream during the NBA finals,” he said. “Good journalistic sh*t you was doing, but you gotta know that any Drake news coming from you is viewed through a different type of eye.”

Akademiks began his rant by arguing that there’s an ecosystem promoting the idea that Drake is washed up and Lamar is now the “king” of hip-hop. “I’m sorry, I listen to Kendrick like once a month. I listen to Drake everyday,” he remarked.

When Ak shared the livestream clip on X (formerly Twitter), fans had mixed responses to his take. One Drake fan brought up Kanye West’s attempt at joining in on the feud to defend the rapper. “So this what Kanye was talking about.. the elimination of Drake..,” they remarked. “So the industry all together came up with a plan to try to end drakes career.. No wonder they got people working for social media trying to convince people to hate Drake.. as well as 5 rappers plus Kendrick dissing.” Another countered: “Ak you letting ya own bias get in the way just shut up and people and say and speak on what they want and feel take the L.”

Joe Budden Tells DJ Akademiks To Stop Reporting About Drake

Joe Budden is a polarizing figure in hip-hop media. He’s been called a hypocrite, especially with regards to his personal life. He’s also been called a hater, as seen in his infamous Lil Yachty interview. The former rapper does make some good points, however. He reflected on the Drake coverage that DJ Akademiks has been doing in recent weeks, and he sees a problem. In Budden’s estimation, Ak’s bias towards the 6 God has made him an unreliable source for fans.

Budden broke it down on an episode of the Joe Budden Podcast. He applauded DJ Akademiks for his journalism skills, but criticized the way Ak has shared it. He pointed to the recent bot allegations that were made against Kendrick Lamar during the NBA finals as a prime example. “Ak is the one on stream during the NBA finals,” Budden asserted. “Good journalistic sh*t you was doing, but you gotta know that any Drake news coming from you is viewed through a different type of eye.” The former Slaughterhouse member pointed to Ak’s relationship with Drake as the problem.

Joe Budden Tried To Give His Former Co-Host Advice

DJ Akademiks shared messages he got from Drake during the Kendrick Lamar battle. Drake even used a sample of Ak on the diss song “Push Ups.” Joe Budden correctly noted that whenever Ak tries to defend Drake, it will look like he’s being given orders by the rapper. “It comes off as a mission sent from Drake,” he explained. His advice to both DJ Akademiks and Drake is to take a couple plays off. Especially in the wake of Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” concert, which was an overwhelming success. “It’s too much to fight,” he added. “You’re gonna look away.”

Joe Budden ultimately urged DJ Akademiks to stop proselytizing on Drake’s behalf. “Ak is the mouth piece,” he complained. “As a Drake fan, I want Ak to stop announcing things about Drake… The Drake releases are much better as a surprise. Anything with Ak reporting it, it just looked a way.” Joe Budden wrapped up his statement by assuring fans that he has respect for DJ Akademiks. He did throw him a bit of a dig, however, when he said that Ak doesn’t care about criticisms because Drake is a “brand builder.” He’s not wrong.

Drake Fans Go After Joe Budden For Not Caring About Kendrick Lamar’s Alleged Bot Usage

Drake and Joe Budden have beefed in the past, and even now, they aren’t on the best of terms. Although Drake will text Joe from time to time, there is no doubt that Budden has had his fair share of criticisms for the boy. Furthermore, during the Kendrick Lamar and Drizzy beef, Budden has been on the side of Kendrick. He has championed every single diss song and has told Drake that it is all over as far as him winning goes. That said, Budden is now finding himself in the crosshairs of the OVO fandom.

This is all because of comments he recently made on his podcast in regards to allegations that Kendrick was using bots. As Joe explains, he always assumed Kendrick was using bots, and even said that he firmly believes Kendrick is, indeed, employing them. Although Budden meant bots in the context of YouTube dislikes, Drake fans felt like Budden was also confirming the allegations of Spotify stream bots. Not to mention, Budden made it clear that he does not care that Kendrick used bots. Consequently, this sent Drake fans into a tailspin.

Joe Budden Gets Drake Fans Heated

“Joe Budden just showed us what the pinnacle of being bias is. Wow, it’s ok to use bots now?!?! That’s how you win a beef?!?? What are we really talking about here,” one person wrote. “joe budden admitting kendrick needed bots to beat drake is PEAK comedy,” said another. Throughout Twitter, Drake fans are noting that this just goes to show that the beef was lost from the very beginning. They see it has hypocrisy from not just Joe, but the broader hip-hop community at large. Needless to say, this whole beef has taken its toll on the fans.

Fans Come After Joe

Let us know what you think of Joe’s comments, down below. Do you believe that what Joe is saying here is that bad? Joe Budden Asserts That Kendrick Lamar Did Use Bots During Drake Beef & He Couldn’t Care Less

It seems clear that Drake fans are hanging onto this Kendrick Lamar debate by a thread. Over the last day or so, there has been some speculation surrounding the use of bots, particularly on the latter’s side. Of course, one of those Drizzy supporters who has been leading the charge has been DJ Akademiks. To try and make his case for how the Canadian artist technically won the battle, he brought on an alleged stream botter who was supposedly paid off by Lamar’s manager, Anthony Saleh. He had a screenshot of the Zelle transfer, equating to a $2500 payout. However, not a lot of people online are buying this, as it could very well be a hoax. But Joe Budden is one of those who actually believes that Kendrick Lamar did utilize bots.

A clip from today’s podcast, which is 734 deep, was shared on X moments ago debating this very topic. In the 40-second breakdown, Joe Budden goes as far as to claim that he knew Lamar was boosting his numbers to outpace Drake. While this is still all up in the air right now, it could leave a bit of a stain on how dominant Kung Fu Kenny was during the beef. However, if this true, Joe could not care less even if he really tried.

Joe Budden Believes Kendrick Did & Isn’t Shocked At All

In a completely flat and passionless delivery, the podcast host says, “Y’all didn’t know that Kendrick used bots?
