Hip-Hop Icon Just Blaze Is Teaming With Howard’s Marching Band To Blow Out Their 100th Homecoming

With Howard University celebrating its 100th Homecoming celebration in 2024, Director of Bands Chancellor Mills was searching for the perfect opportunity to impact the program in his first year on the job.

College bands are equal parts technical exhibition and pageantry and HBCUs like Howard are well known for consistently raising the bar with their “Showtime” Marching Band playing everything from Thanksgiving Day Parades to NFL games to Presidential inaugurations. But how high could they go for the 100th? Enter legendary hip-hop producer Just Blaze and UPROXX, who teamed with Mills to find out in a new series made possible by State Farm.

As you can see in the first episode which kicks off the series, Mills is feeling the pressure at the start of this mission. “You only get one chance to do the 100th,” he tells our cameras. But with Just Blaze supplying a brilliant blend of bombastic beats, the big band horns and chattering tenor drum sets ease any nervousness.

Even a seasoned icon like Just Blaze – who has worked with everyone from JAY Z to to Eminem to Beyonce – is pumped to see his hits reimagined in such a unique way, telling us that this collab was something his music was made for. See for yourself and keep an eye out for further installments in this series as Mills, Just Blaze, and the Howard band amaze and astonish.

Diddy Has Been Stripped Of His Honorary Howard University Degree Amid Ongoing Abuse And Sexual Assault Allegations

Another organization has decided to publicly cut ties with Diddy. Yesterday (June 7), Howard University has officially denounced its former student.

By way of The Dig (the school’s campus news hub), the university announced its decision to strip Diddy of his honorary degree while expressing disgust over his physical assault on Cassie (seen in the video footage obtained by CNN).

Although Diddy never formally graduated from the prestigious historically Black institution, in 2014 he was bestowed with the honorary degree for his career’s work and philanthropic efforts at the university, which included a scholarship fund.

Read Howard University’s full statement below.

The Howard University Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to accept the return by Mr. Sean Combs of the honorary degree conferred upon him in 2014. This acceptance revokes all honors and privileges associated with the degree. Accordingly, the Board has directed that his name be removed from all documents listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University.

Mr. Combs’ behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.

The University is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence.

The Board has also directed the University administration to immediately take the following actions: terminate a 2016 gift agreement with Mr. Combs, disband the scholarship program in his name, return his $1 million contribution, and terminate a 2023 pledge agreement with the Sean Combs Foundation.

No payments toward the $1 million pledge have been due or made by the Sean Combs Foundation as of this date, therefore no funds are due to be returned under the 2023 pledge agreement.

Diddy hasn’t issued a statement regarding the board’s decision. But this wasn’t the only commemorative honor up for review.

Last month, the Hollywood Walk Of Fame committee revealed that Diddy’s star would not be removed due to the body’s “lack of control” in the process. On the other hand, New York City’s Eric Adams revealed that officials are considering revoking Diddy’s Key To The City.

Howard University Revokes Diddy’s Honorary Doctorate Degree

The Diddy fallout continues. The mogul’s legacy has been thoroughly dismantled over the last eight months. The footage of him attacking his ex-girlfriend, Cassie, the multiple lawsuits, and the harrowing recollections of those who worked under him have made it virtually impossible to view him in the light that fans once did. Howard University feels the same. Diddy’s alma mater decided to strip the mogul of the honorary doctorate degree they awarded him back in 2014.

Howard University’s Board of Trustees announced their decision on June 7. The board made it clear that they do not condone the crimes that Diddy has been accused of caught doing, and therefore strip him of his honorary doctorate credentials. “Mr. Combs’ behavior, as captured in a recently released video, is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs,” the statement read. “He is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.” The statement further stated that the man born Sean Combs will not be invited to special occasions and events held on Howard’s campus.

Diddy Is No Longer Welcome On Howard’s Campus

The board’s decision comes on the heels of a Rolling Stone expose on Diddy. It detailed some of the mogul’s previously documented allegations, but it also shed light on a violent incident that allegedly took place on Howard’s campus. Several students claimed they saw Diddy remove his belt and beat a woman he was dating at the time. The woman in question refused to answer questions, but the students recalled fearing for her life. “She would tense up [when Combs appeared],” one of them explained. “He just had a weird control thing. I felt like she was fearful.”

Diddy’s Howard pride remained throughout his career. The mogul announced plans to donate $1 million to the university after winning the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2022 BET Awards. He made good on his promise in 2023. “As someone who attended Howard University and values the transformative experience of historically Black colleges,” he noted in a statement. “It remains crucial that we strive to protect and uphold their legacy. The board praised his generosity, and cited him as a role model for students. What a difference a year makes.
