DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s “Code Red” Turns 30

It’s hard to believe that DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s Code Red album has turned 30. Very few duos in hip-hop’s history have been able to make their mark and impact on the hip-hop culture like DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. 2023 marks 30 years since the duo released their final album, Code Red. We’re looking back at the album’s success and the evolution of their working relationship up to that point.

The Grammy Award-Winning Sound

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince found early success with light-hearted, humorous, and profanity-free songs in the mid-80s. One of the highlights of their careers included their groundbreaking victory at the 1989 Grammy Awards. They clinched the first-ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance with their hit single “Parents Just Don’t Understand” (1988). This incredible win put hip-hop on the mainstream map and soon other acts would follow. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s most iconic and successful track became “Summertime” (1991). The track serves as an anthem for warm, carefree months. The song not only peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 but it secured them their second Grammy.

Code Red: The End Of An Epic Era

Marking the end of an era, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince released Code Red on October 12, 1993. This album followed the triumph of 1991’s Homebase but it was perceived as a commercial disappointment in comparison. As their fifth and final album, it received mixed reviews from critics and fans. Some argue that it waters down their signature style on tracks like “Twinkle Twinkle (I’m Not a Star).”

The album reached its highest position at #64 on the Billboard 200 chart and climbed to #39 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. On January 14, 1994, the Recording Industry Association of America awarded the album with a gold certification. Four singles supported the project, beginning with “Boom! Shake the Room.” This was followed by “I’m Looking for the One (To Be With Me),” “I Wanna Rock,” and “Can’t Wait To Be With You.”

Code Red‘s Critical Reception

Despite his longstanding reluctance to delve into gangsta rap, The Fresh Prince ultimately embraced a grittier style on Code Red. While the album owes much of its success to the skillful production, The Fresh Prince’s undeniable charm is still apparent. However, the album fell short of leaving a lasting impression on many fans. One of the album’s less convincing moments occurs in “Twinkle Twinkle (I’m Not A Star),” where Will Smith attempts to present himself as an everyday civilian and not a celebrity. He recounts an incident at a movie theater, where he’s watching Jurassic Park. He finds himself approached by an overly enthusiastic fan seeking an autograph, much to the dismay of her date.

Smith’s attempt to appear as a down-to-earth guy, despite his celebrity status, ultimately feels contrived. His effort on this track underscores the challenge of shedding his larger-than-life image. In hindsight, Code Red remains an overlooked chapter in the evolving careers of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. While it may not earn the status of a classic, the album offers valuable insights into the duo’s artistic development and foreshadows Smith’s aspirations for future success. As listeners revisit this record, they can uncover the nuanced journey of a legendary artist and actor who was on the cusp of reaching superstardom.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince: Influence And Legacy

Code Red stands as a pivotal moment in the career of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. It not only showcased their willingness to evolve and experiment with their music but also marked the end of an era as a group. Following this release, both artists embarked on their individual journeys, with Will Smith ascending to superstardom as both an actor and a solo artist. Code Red remains a significant milestone in their legacy, capturing the essence of their music and setting the stage for the remarkable solo careers that were to follow.

Cam’ron Does Hilarious OJ Simpson Impression While Dressed As Him For Halloween

Cam’ron and Mase have been experiencing a whirlwind of success thanks to their new show, It Is What It Is. The show has been active for months at this point, and it has proven to be a massive success. Although some people have criticized them for their lack of statistical analysis, others prefer it that way. Overall, they approach it from a fan perspective. Furthermore, they are completely independent which means they do not have to censor themselves. Instead, they can do as they please.

For instance, they have been able to get away with having OJ Simpson on the show, every single Monday. OJ is a very controversial figure and for good reason. However, Cam and Mase have welcomed him onto the show with open arms. He is a mainstay whenever they discuss football, and that won’t change anytime soon. The guys are grateful for OG, and it seems like Cam decided to pay it forward by going as the former NFL star for Halloween.

Cam’ron Reveals His Costume

In the clip above, you can see that Cam does a very good impersonation of Simpson. Furthermore, he had on a vintage Buffalo Bills jersey and even had a vintage helmet. As Cam’ron explains in the clip, the jersey was gifted to him by OJ himself. Even the helmet was a gift and it is all authentic retro gear. So much so that the Bills logo was peeling off of the side of the helmet. It made for a pretty cool costume, and the It Is What It Is fans thought it was pretty cool, as well.

We’re sure there are going to be a few people going as OJ Simpson for Halloween. However, we doubt those costumes will be as flattering as Cam’s. Let us know what you think of this costume, in the comments section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will always be sure to keep you informed on your favorites artists.

King Isis’ ‘Make It Up’ Video Is A Spooky Look At The Singer’s Idea Of A Halloween-Themed Lover’s Quarrel

Halloween 2023 is here. While most recording artists — including Ice Spice, Megan Thee Stallion, and Uproxx cover star Chlöe — are focused on their over-the-top costumes, King Isis is interested solely in providing the soundtrack for the evening. The artist’s spooky spirit is at the center of their latest single, “Make It Up.”

For the official video, the musician fully embraced the ghoulish theme associated with the holiday as they finds themselves caught in a battle for the heart of a vampire.

“Waves we undo / Crash and renew / What’s it take for you / Shades of your blue / Sink in my shoes / Drowning in your hues / Still see you in my rear view no I can’t keep running from / Release you I still bleed you hold me like another crutch / I don’t wanna know or let it go how hard it was,” sings King Isis.

In a statement shared with Clash Magazine, they shared the inspiration behind the track. “I wrote the first version of this song at home in Oakland, going through lows in love and life,” King Isis said. “I was experimenting with darker production and more droney melodies, which I felt encompassed the monotonous feeling of just getting through the motions that were my life at the time.”

Khia Reads Sexyy Red For Filth After “Hater” Diss, Pregnant Star Claps Back

It’s been a notably tense few weeks in the world of hip-hop, and as Scorpio season wages on, it doesn’t seem as though that’s going to be changing. Currently, Khia and Sexyy Red’s beef is taking centre stage, following a new video from the former that reads the latter to filth. “We the people vs. fugly, non-Sexyy knocked-up a** Red,” her lengthy rant aimed at the St. Louis native begins. “Your a** is being charged with not being ashamed of your God d**n self. Doing h*e s**t then being mad about it. Being a deadbeat mama, a deadbeat daddy, a deadbeat daughter, and a deadbeat Young Thug lookalike,” Khia went on.

The “My Neck, My Back” hitmaker then compared Red to a “wrinkled bedsheet” while labelling herself a queen. “Suckin’ on toes and balls at the same d**n time. Getting pissed and shi**ed on and tryna come for a real Queen,” Khia continued to list her opp’s various charges. “Tryna clap back with the Clap,” and “looking like some crust in a ni**as drawers” also made the list, along with the Philly native’s theories about Sexyy being unable to deliver her baby vaginally due to a history of STIs.

Of course, it didn’t long for Red to see the diss video herself. As per usual, she didn’t let it get under her skin. Instead, she called Khia “jealous and miserable” for throwing so much shade before posting an unflattering throwback image of the mother of two on her own IG feed.

To add insult to injury, the “Pound Town” hitmaker also included an unattractive meme for users to compare to Khia’s look. Currently, the internet seems divided as to who really won the women’s latest bout of beef.

Hood Hottest Princess Claps Back

Now that Khia has said all that’s running through her mind about Sexyy Red, some are suggesting that Sukihana may be her next target. The L&HH cast member threatened to “knock Khia tf out” earlier this month, as we’re curious to see how the elder rap diva will respond. Read everything Suki had to say on the matter at the link below and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Blueface Lists Off The Signees On His MILF Music Label

From rapper to label head? “Yeah aight.” That is the career path that Blueface is seemingly taking right now after a recent tweet saying that he was going to retire. “I don’t rap I retired I’m the label now.” It comes as a surprise considering the fact that he has been putting out some material and guest verses as of late. However, if this is the case, there might be a path to success for him. While he might not have any top-flight lyricists, he certainly has some interesting characters on his roster.

According to XXL, Blueface’s record label, MILF Music, became official back during the middle of summer this year. The first artist to come on board with him is his now fiancée, Jaidyn Alexis. He confirmed this in a reply to someone who asked why she was first on the list. “She the First Lady duhh.” The original criteria to be a part of this entertainment group was to be a woman with kids.

Blueface Has Five Artists On MILF Music

“Milf Music is officially the label. I’m only signing women with children. Your BD [baby daddy] is your only reference that I can use. If he don’t vouch for you, I ain’t f***ing with you. You don’t have to be a rapper. I just need to see star quality in you.” However, after his recent calling out of Lil Mabu, it seems that he has gone against his own requirements. On top of that, Chrisean Rock is also on the roster, including another Cali native, Jay Cinco, as well as X.o Rico.

What are your initial thoughts on Blueface showing off the roster for his MILF Music label? Do you think this will become one of the biggest recording names in the industry? Will he be able to sign more names, or will some bigger fish join him? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that on mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest breaking news around Blueface, as well as everything else going on around the music world.
