Doja Cat Reaches Chart Milestone After Her Coachella Performance

Doja Cat has had a unique career path. She broke through with a viral song and exploded into pop stardom in the span of just a few years. She’s one of the most consistent hitmakers of the last half decade, and yet, she had never topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Charts. For all her success on the Billboard Hot 100, Doja has struggled to crossover with genre audiences. Until now, that is. Doja Cat bodied the Coachella stage with her recent performance, and it gave her latest single an unexpected boost.

The performance in question took place on April 14, and the single in question is “Agora Hills.” Doja’s eccentric slow jam performed well on the Hot 100, peaking at number seven, but it was R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay that proved tougher. It peaked higher than any of Doja Cat’s previous entries, at number three, but it wasn’t until her Coachella performance that it finally claimed the number one spot. According to Billboard, “Agora Hills” increased in weekly plays by a staggering 19%. It’s fitting that “Agora Hills” be Doja’s first R&B/Hip-Hop chart topper, given that it samples the classic R&B song “All I Do Is Think of You” by Troop.

“Agora Hills” Is Doja Cat’s First R&B/Hip-Hop Number One

It’s also appropriate that Doja’s R&B/Hip-Hop breakthrough came on the album Scarlet. The artist made it very clear that she wanted to ditch her radio-friendly aesthetic for a darker hip-hop sound. The singles “Attention” and “Paint the Town Red” reflect this darker sound, while “Agora Hills” and “Go Off” split the difference between pop and R&B. Finding the right balance was the trick, according to an interview Doja gave to Harper’s Bazaar.

The artist told the outlet that her goal with Scarlet was to mix stories and bops. “It’s a nice mixture of both,” she explained. “I think this project is a really fun canvas for me to play with my rap skills and talk about what’s going on in my life. But I’m not abandoning who I was and what I know about pop and singing and that aspect of music.” Doja’s creative shift proved fruitful, as Scarlet has already been certified platinum and spawned number one singles on multiple charts.

YNW Melly Has Melodies For Days On New Album “Young New Wave”

YNW Melly has a gift for melody. The Florida rapper broke onto the scene with the earworm 2018 single “Murder On My Mind,” and since then, he’s proven he can be an intriguing artist. Melly’s career has been derailed by murder charges, but whenever he focuses on the music, he’s good. Case in point, his latest album, Young New Wave. At 11 songs and 37 minutes, Melly avoids the bloated tracklists of so many of his hip-hop peers. It proves to be a smart call.

Young New Wave is heavy on guest features, but YNW Melly sets the tone by himself on the opener, “Fix That.” The bouncy production is undercut by mournful guitars that compliment the rapper’s vocals. Melly spends most of the album in this pocket. It makes for a good listen, but one that’s aware of what could happen when one lives dangerously. Melly is, after all, looking at a possible life sentence in prison. “In the Benzy” is a fun posse cut with piano stabs and guest verses from Lil 50 and BreezyLYN. “Unannounced” is another strong album track, as Melly SCY Jimm trade aggressive verses over a watery vocal sample. The former is really in his element whenever he softens up the edges of hard-hitting beats.

YNW Melly’s Latest Offering Is Brief And Catchy

Not every song goes over perfectly. “The “772 Love Pt. 3 (Your Love)” is an excellent showcase for YNW BSlime and YNW4L, but Melly lays the Autotune on thick and winds up sounding like a poor man’s Young Thug on the hook. “Top Off” and “Ville” are much better examples of Melly in crooner mode. The former might feature the catchiest chorus on the entire album. It’s difficult to say Young New Wave will generate momentum for YNW Melly, given that he’s currently behind bars, but the album does serve as a reminder of his prodigious talent.

What are your thoughts on this new album, Young New Wave, by YNW Melly? Do Melly’s hooks still grab you? Do you feel like he’s getting better as a rapper? Which of the album’s tracks was your favorite? We want to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Lucky Daye Is Ready To Shake Up Our World On His New Single, ‘HERicane’

It’s our lucky night. R&B hitmaker Lucky Daye is kicking of the era to his upcoming third album. Tonight (April 19), he has shared his new single, “HERicane.”

Full of metaphors pertaining to natural phenomena, “HERicane” features Lucky ready to get au natural with a special lady.

“I’ll take you to the top floor, baby / If you want it, don’t let me go, hold on, just ride / What you wanna do? I’ll drive you through midnight / Let it rain, baby, rain / Till we slide into the heart of hurricane,” he sings on the songs chorus.

The song features production by D’Mile, who gives the song a rocky, electric guitar-drive groove, paired with sexy, soulful vocals. Late last year, Lucky Daye shared the Bruno Mars-produced single, “That’s You.” In a recent interview on 105.3 R&B, Lucky detailed his upcoming album, saying that his upcoming project will be more happy in tone, after his previous two album were comprised of love songs and break-up ballads.

“It’s about being grounded in chaos,” Lucky said. “Whether it’s a relationship, or whether it’s the industry it’s all about not being afraid to be yourself, not being afraid to spread your wings.”

Logic Name Drops Kendrick Lamar On New Single “44ever”

Logic never stops working. The rapper announced his retirement in 2020, but he’s dropped two albums and several mixtapes since then. He loves rapping too much to give it up, and his latest single, “44ever,” is a testament to that love. Logic and 6ix co-produce a moody instrumental over which Logic raps about his unbeatable talent on the mic. The rapper even compares himself to Kendrick Lamar, who’s currently engrossed in hip-hop’s “civil war.”

“44ever” is the latest installment in Logic’s “44” series. It’s similar to Drake’s timestamp records, in that it prepares the listeners to expect sharp bars and minimal hooks. “44 Bars” kicked off the series in 2016, followed by “44 More” in 2018. It’s been a while since Bobby Tarantino got in the booth to give us 44, but he mostly delivers here. He says right upfront that the song is for “day one” fans, before delving into bars about drinking with Zac Efron and feeling like Mick Jagger. The name drops are frequent, but the K. Dot reference is going to get most of the attention. Logic alludes to Lamar’s tendency to bomb on rappers (“Like That” anyone?) to illuminate his own competitive tendencies. “Bobby Boy bringin’ that kick like Kung Fu Kenny,” he raps. “Not many can f**k with me.”

Logic Keeps His “44” Series Going Strong

“44ever” was previewed back in March 2023. Logic teased a snippet of the song on TikTok, and stated that it will be on his upcoming album, Ultra 85. There did appear to be some confusion with the rollout, however. “44ever” was posted to Logic’s YouTube channel three hours before its official release on April 19, but it was subsequently taken down. It did not resurface until midnight ET. It’s currently available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new song, “44ever” by Logic? Does Logic’s relentless flow live up to the promise of the snippet? Is this the best song in the “44” series? Are you eager to hear Logic’s new album? We want to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Wishin’ they could get in but they can’t
Soon as they see me, they faint

Nas & DJ Premier Still Got It On New Single “Define My Name”

It doesn’t get more legendary than Nas and DJ Premier. The rapper and producer symbolize the purest form of hip-hop, and they’ve both been doing it for three decades. Nas and Preemo have classic work on their own, of course, but there’s something undeniably special about when these two collaborate. Songs like “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Nas Is Like,” and “I Gave You Power” are essential listens for any aspiring hip-hop fan. Their latest single, “Define My Name,” proves that they haven’t lost a step.

Nas has been teasing fans with a Premier collaboration all week. The rapper hopped on Instagram to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Illmatic, and thanked Preemo for his work on the album. Fans flocked to the comment section to ask for another collab, and Nas obliged. He posted the artwork and title of the new track hours before its release. “Define My Name” is exactly what you expect it to be, in the best way possible. DJ Premier’s production is both slick and dusty, while Nas’ rhymes are sharp as ever. We’ve all gotten used to hearing Nas over Hit-Boy production in the 2020s, but “Define My Name” is a reminder that nobody anchors his voice better than Preemo.

Nas And DJ Premier’s Chemistry Shines Through

A great song is one thing, but it remains to be seen in “Define My Name” is the teaser for an entire collab album. Nas and DJ Premier have been circling the notion of a collab album for decades. The former even referenced it on the 2022 song “30” off King’s Disease III. “Superhero material, rap star status,” he spit. “Premier album still might happen.” Information is still scarce, but if nothing else comes of the reunion, “Define My Name” was worth the hype.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new song, “Define My Name” by Nas and DJ Premier? Does the song live up to the hype? Does Preemo’s beat bring out the best in Nas? Polygamous-minded, seven wives on ridiculous timin’

At twenty, I said I’d better quit by thirty
Then by thirty, I thought by forty rapping is corny

Nicki Minaj’s Star-Studded “FTCU (Sleeze Mix)” Laps The Original

Nicki Minaj is on a high at the moment. The rapper’s Pink Friday 2 album was a success, and the accompanying tour has been even bigger. Minaj is currently on the highest-grossing tour ever by a female rapper, and to celebrate she’s dropped off a remix to “FTCU.” The original version of the song was a standout on Pink Friday 2, with its bass-heavy instrumental and Minaj’s ferocious delivery. The remix, however, takes it to a whole new level. “FTCU (Sleeze Mix)” is an upgrade from the original.

“FTCU (Sleeze Mix)” works so well because the simple production allows room for Minaj to share the spotlight with her superstar guests. She really brought the heavy hitters on this one, as the remix has verses from Chris Brown, Travis Scott and Sexxy Red. Minaj and Brown have collaborated many times over the years, but Scott is an unexpected inclusion. Scott and Minaj had beef back in 2018, when the latter accused Scott of using bundle deals to outsell her Queen album. It appears things are cool now, which is a plus for fans. Both Brown and Scott deliver here, yet it’s Sexxy Red who steals the show.

Sexxy Red Shines on Nicki Minaj’s Remix

Minaj is returning the favor after Sexxy Red enlisted her for the remix of “Pound Town 2.” Their styles work well in tandem, and Red’s singular flow adds a different splash of color to the “FTCU” instrumental. “Pound Town 2” peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and given the star power involved here, its easy to envision a world where “FTCU (Sleeze Mix)” does just as well.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new song, “FTCU (Sleeze Mix)” by Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Travis Scott and Sexxy Red? Does Minaj’s beefed up version of the song top the original? Will this be a song of the summer candidate? Who do you think had the best verse? We want to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section.
