Mattel Creates Barbie Modeled After Transgender Actress Laverne Cox

A new Barbie doll is being made in the likeness of transgender actress Laverne Cox.

Mattel said Wednesday it worked directly with Cox to create a Barbie that fit in closely with her style.

The limited-edition Tribute Barbie comes with a red gown, heeled boots, a metallic bodysuit and silver earrings, and will be available Tuesday at Amazon, Walmart, Target and MattelCreations.com for $39.99..

In a statement, Cox said it’s been a dream of hers for years to work with Barbie to create her own doll so that fans can have the opportunity to add a Barbie modeled after a transgender person to their collection.

“It’s been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll. I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection.”

Also included the Barbie Tribute Collection are bridal dress designer Vera Wang wearing a black one-piece outfit modeled after her Spring 2017 collection. Comedian and star of the 1950s television show I Love Lucy, Lucille Ball and Queen Elizabeth II.

In honor of Cox’s Barbie doll, Mattel will make a donation in her name to the nonprofit TransFamilySOS.

“We are proud to highlight the importance of inclusion and acceptance at every age and to recognize Laverne’s significant impact on culture with a Tribute Collection Barbie,” said Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, in a statement.

Trae Tha Truth Reveals He Declined The White House Visit Invitation

Rapper and philanthropist Trae Tha Truth would rather be in the trenches with the community than visit The White House. The “I’m On 2.0” rapper shared he declined an invitation to the White House this week. Revealed in a social media post he said he wanted to instead focus on helping the families of the victims of the mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo New York.

Trae said the invitation was “to meet with the President with the families of those who have wrongfully been murdered by police.” President Biden honored Trae last year with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.

Trae added that he would like to assist with some of the funeral costs for families of victims in the Texas school shooting and also announced a food giveaway for Buffalo residents. Last weekend 18-year-old white male, Payton Gendron open fired in a deadly mass shooting and injured three and killed ten people at the Tops Grocery store.

The Houston native known for his dedication to the community was there shortly after the tragedy. He arrived in Buffalo with an 18-wheeler full of food and toiletries at the site of Tops grocery store, which remains closed following the mass shooting.

Pete Rock Blasts Drill Rap: “That Kinda Hip-hop Is Doo Doo and It Disrupts the Soul”

Pete Rock blasted drill rap in a now-deleted social media post. After calling drill rap “doo doo and disrupts the soul,” Pete Rock removed his thoughts on the subgenre.

Pete Rock shared a video of New York City Mayor Eric Adams who has spoken against drill rap and connected it with the uptick of violent crime in the city. Seemingly in agreement with Adams, Rock blasted off on the subject:

“Good morning.Drill rap! That’s trash hop not hip-hop I been told y’all about this kinda shit. IDC call me what you want but that kinda hip-hop is doo doo and it disrupts the soul I told y’all that already man lol smh. Nobody speaks up on this trash lol. Drill rap not even for the birds or the streets its the result of greed, people with no talent, and the destruction of the culture. Y’all never see the play when it’s happening and everyone complains but does not speak up and say a word. Now this! … This how we going out. It’s on social media but who is really promoting this? Talk about that smh.”

ICYMI: Benzino Turns Himself Into Police After Warrant Issued for Arrest

Benzino turned himself in to police on Monday (May 23) on a warrant stemming from an incident with his son’s mother and her boyfriend. According to All Hip Hop, Benzino got into an incident with Althea Heart and her boyfriend, who state Benzino punched his truck.

Benzino revealed that he will be turning himself in. “I was kind of arguing with the guy she was with at the time,” Benzino said. “Long story short, the case was like two years ago and somebody put that old video up and it got me kind of arguing with him.”

Benzino was supposed to attend a court meeting via zoom and missed the appointment due to being sick with COVID. You can hear Benzino detail his current legal issue below.

ICYMI: Atlanta Area Man Arrested for Threatening to Blow Up Tyler Perry’s Studio

Tyler Perry’s Atlanta studio was the site of a bomb threat. Atlanta PD arrested a local man, Coles Arrasheed, for terroristic threats against the iconic location.

TMZ reports Coles called the mainline of the studio with a demand to speak with Perry. After being told that wasn’t possible, the man began to rant, leading to the receptionist hanging up and blocking the number.

The receptionist later discovered a voicemail that contained a bomb threat, which she then alerted the police.

Coles was arrested and booked for a felony charge at Fulton County Jail. He was released on a $5,000 bond.

Rick Ross dropped off Richer Than I Ever Been in December 2021, but is already ready to pop out two new releases. Speaking with Hot New Hip Hop, the Biggest Boss stated the two albums will be announced soon, but he is done with his Epic Records deal.

“I got huge offers on the table right now. Huge huge offers. Conversation with Def Jam. Everybody,” Ross shared. “Everybody wants to be in business with Ricky Rozay. They know when Ricky Rozay wants to make music, I make the best music. When I want huge collaborations it’s easy. I don’t even gotta text n****s. I can have my homies DM a n***a.”

In addition to the music moves, Rozay is also primed to take over your TV screens According to theJasmineBRAND reports Rozay is headed to BET for a new non-scripted show.

Ricky Rozay’s new series will reportedly follow his efforts at different outdoor and indoor activities. The forthcoming show’s name and release date are currently unannounced.

Ross previously teased a show, stating, ““I’ma go ahead and do me a show. The time is now. It’s going to be about wealth, based on success.”

He added, “We actually filming right now, but I hope y’all are ready for it ’cause I’ma talk some big numbers.”

ICYMI: Pepsi Decides to “Pass the Mic” on the Super Bowl Halftime Show

After ten years, Pepsi will no longer sponsor the Super Bowl Halftime show. This year Pepsi sponsored what is considered Hip-Hop’s first Super Bowl halftime show, which started Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. The NFL partners with JAY-Z’s Roc Nation to produce the halftime show.

“After 10 years of iconic Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show performances, we have decided it’s time to pass the mic,” Pepsi wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to the amazing artists and fans who helped us create some incredible moments along the way.”

Pepsi will continue its sponsorship rights with the NFL, despite dropping the halftime show. The renewed agreement will provide Pepsi pouring rights at top events and keep Gatorade on the sidelines. According to CNBC, the previous deal between Pepsi and the NFL was $2 billion over ten years. The terms of the new agreement were undisclosed.

The rights for the halftime show are believed to be net the NFL $50 million.

DJ Quik’s Son Arrested for Murder, Bail Set at $2M

According to a report from NBC LA, David Blake Jr., son of Hip Hop legend DJ Quik and City of Compton Council Liaison, has been arrested on Thursday(May 27) on suspicion of murder.

A press release stated that officers responded to a call Wednesday evening about a fight in progress before receiving a second call about shots being fired. When the cops arrive, they found Julio Cardoza, 33, suffering from a single gunshot wound. He died a short time later at the hospital.Blake was identified as a suspect and arrested the next morning.

According to City of Compton records, Quik’s son works as a “council liaison” to Councilman Isaac Galvan. Early reports speculate that the victim may have had ties to the mother of Galvan’s child, whose name is Michelle Cardoza.

Blake’s bail has been set at $2 million.

Neither Galvan nor DJ Quik has publicly commented on David Blake Jr.’s arrest. This is the second time a child of DJ Quik’s has faced similar charges as his daughter was charged with killing her son nearly ten years ago.

Pimp C’s Daughter Spoke On Her Father’s Legacy At The UGK & MJG VERZUZ Battle

UGK and MJG, two of the Hip-Hop groups that pioneered the integration of the southern culture in rap music, both took the stage in Atlanta (May 26)  and put on a show for their VERZUZ match.

Thanks to Thriller app, where fans watched the face-off, the two iconic groups performed some songs of the past that provided a sense of nostalgia. The late Pimp C couldn’t make the VERZUZ, but his daughter, Christian Butler, thanked fans for keeping his legacy alive.

The legendary Texas and Tennessee battle brought a ton of stars for the showdown. Special guests included Lil KeKe, 2 Chains, Bone Thugz N Harmony, Big Boi, Sleepy Brown, David Banner, Jazzy Phae, Twista, and former NBA player and champion, Stephen Jackson.

VERZUZ had the ALT going bonkers for Memorial Day weekend. Music fans got a chance to listen to songs that turned them up back then and on the 26. Bun B made sure he sent his condolences to the victims of the Uvalde, Robb Elementary School shooting.
