Hannibal Buress Speaks on Performing as a Rapper: ‘This is a New Feeling For me’

Popular comedian-actor Hannibal Buress is adding another skill to his resume.  After comedian and actor, Buress can also add rapper.  Recently, he performed in Austin, Texas, at the SXSW festival.  The TAG actor goes by Eshu Tune when he is rapping.  During his set, he performed songs from his self-titled album, such as “Knee Brace”, “Donde Esta”, and “Veneers”.  Buress has a remix to “Veneers” that features rappers Paul Wall and Danny Brown.

Before he performed, Buress let fans know that being on stage is new to him-but not in the way you may think.

“This is a new feeling for me.  Not the rapping thing-it’s just usually when I play show is Austin, I get paid a lot of money.”

The Spiderman: No Way Home actor kicked off his set with a live band and entertained the audience with not only his songs but his commentary as well.  Buress told jokes throughout his set, and his songs were comical as well.  Since the Chicago native is known for being a comedian, the audience assumed he would perform a stand-up routine.  This was like when Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, performed at the SXSW festival in 2011.  Fans were ready for jokes but instead witnessed Gambino rapping.

Buress and Gambino are similar as music and comedy have gone hand in hand for them.  The Get Out actor has participated in battle rap, hosted open mic nights, and has been on rappers’ albums performing skits.  When the coronavirus pandemic called for a lockdown, Buress decided to step in the studio and give rapping an actual chance.  The 40-year-old specializes in making funny, witty music, which is right up his alley.  His debut album, Eshu Tune, was released in April of 2022.

“… My stage name is ‘Eshu Tune.’ I came up with the stage name a couple months ago,” said Hannibal on The WGCI Morning Show on 107.5 WGCI. “Eshu is from Nigerian mythology — he’s a Trickster God. So being able to compartmentalize it — I don’t wear red in my regular life. As Eshu, that’s the red, and that brings the energy. So I’m still learning how to perform, and how to do it…”

The new EP sees the comedian transition into music with an eight-song collection that showcases a different repertoire from the entertainer. The project’s subject matter showcases Eshu’s competitive nature on “1-3 Pocket,” a dollar and a dream chaser-tunred-landlord on “Donde Esta,” newfound love as a first-time father on “Kept About 3,” and a Chicago homecoming ready to spaz on “Back In The City.” For debut, Eshu Tune collaborators include talented musicians Haile Supreme, Eryn Allen Kane and Kiefer.

The word “Wiscansin” originates from T-Pain’s verse on the 2008 classic “Can’t Believe It” featuring Lil Wayne from his gold-selling third album, Three Ringz (Jive). T-Pain changed the pronunciation of the state, Wisconsin, to “Wiscansin” to make a rhyme with “mansion. The success of “Can’t Believe It” spawned a remix with Justin Timberlake. In 2018, T-Pain launched a collegiate-themed apparel line, Wiscansin University, inspired by the word.

Danny Brown Was Excited He ‘Didn’t Bomb’ His First Time Doing Standup Comedy Opening For Hannibal Buress

Rap and standup comedy are very similar performance arts rooted in timing, vocal precision, and crowd interaction. However, they are far from the same — only a handful of standup comics have ever proved adept at rap, including Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, and Zack Fox, while Chance The Rapper’s attempt to try comedy sorta stunk. But there remains an affinity between the two groups, who have an appreciation for each other’s crafts, which occasionally cross over — such as the time Hannibal Buress trolled fans at Adult Swim Festival as an imposter MF DOOM.

The latest rapper to attempt to make the leap to standup is Danny Brown, who is well-known for the goofball comedy of his raps and his fun-loving personality. Last week, he made his standup debut, opening for Hannibal Buress in Huntsville, Texas at a 4,000-attendance venue. Brown tweeted both before and after the show, revealing that it was his first night, asking followers to wish him good luck, then celebrating the fact that “I didn’t bomb!!!!!” In another pair of deleted tweets, Complex reports that the rapper said he was now “addicted” to comedy and dedicating himself to getting better.

“Definitely have a lot to work on but I can honestly say I’m addicted now and want to get better at this so I’m definitely gonna go hard when I get back home,” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone who sent me good luck wishes it definitely helped cause playing in front of 4K for my first stand up set definitely had me missing sleep last night.”
