Halle Bailey Added to Pharrell-Inspired Musical

Halle Bailey is pulling the curtain back on her decision to keep her pregnancy quiet as long as she could.

Here’s some Hip-Hop in Hollywood news: A Pharrell Williams-inspired musical film in the works at Universal just added another star name. Halle Bailey, the star of The Little Mermaid, will lead opposite Kelvin Harrison Jr. and 2024 Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Pretty much all the industry trades confirmed Bailey’s involvement in the project, but her character and the other character details are tightly under wraps. However, if you know much about Pharrell’s story, you can imagine a whole lot.  

Michael Gondry (Be Kind Rewind) is directing, and Williams, of course, is producing.

So Shadow and Act say the film is a “coming-of-age musical set in 1977 Virginia Beach,” and the story will draw inspiration from Williams’ childhood experiences “growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.” See, there’s a lot of intel there, but they say the project is “under wraps.” How is that guarding a secret? Anyway, Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson are penning the script.

Williams will produce with Mimi Valdés via I am OTHER. Gil Netter produces under his self-titled production company, Gil Netter Productions.

Bailey was last seen in a significant role in The Color Purple and was the titular character in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

DDG says he was being “petty” when he DM’d Rubi Rose back in 2023 amid a fight with Halle Bailey. Speaking about the incident with VladTV for a new interview, he explained that he knew Rose would post the messages and wanted Halle to see them because he was upset.

“I did it in front of her. I had no intention of actually linking with Rubi Rose,” he said. “She seen it. Imagine you’re arguing with your girl and you get mad at her for something. ‘I’m finna do this. Watch this,” type sh*t. I feel like people thought that I was like sneakily like ‘Oh what you doing?’ and that’s when she posted it. I know what type of girl she is.”

Elsewhere in the interview, DDG discussed convincing Rubi Rose to create an OnlyFans account. He also argued that he wouldn’t have a problem if Halle had a profile either. “She wouldn’t because her brand is completely different… But as an average female, or a female that don’t have that type of image, or that type of sh*t going for you, the OnlyFans sh*t, especially if you already lit, all you gotta do is– Bhad Bhabie made $50 million. $50 million the moment she turned 18. She ain’t on there f*cking nobody. She just on their posting what she would post on Instagram. It was smart.” He also described 2023 as a “set-back,” as far as the music side of his career. For the first time in her life, Halle Bailey is celebrating her birthday as a mother, and she’s making it look totally effortless. On Thursday (March 28), the Atlanta-born entertainer posted a photo dump on Instagram revealing how she spent her big day with her beau, DDG, and their baby boy, Halo. It’s unclear exactly where Bailey and her family are soaking up so much sunshine, but the smiles on their faces prove their making unforgettable memories there.

“This is 24 🥰🎉💘🎂,” the birthday girl wrote in her caption, selecting a mud-covered picture of her and her infant to begin. Though we can see his full head of hair, Halo’s face remains a mystery as his parents protect his privacy. For someone who only gave birth a few months ago, Bailey’s body looks banging in her purple bikini, and she appears more confident than ever before. “My Halle and Halo 😍😍😍,” the “Angel” singer’s big sister, Chloe, wrote in the comments.

One of the worst parts about big awards like the Oscars and the Grammys is seeing how so many talented and deserving individuals don’t get the recognition they deserve based on there only being one winner or only so many nominations. However, there’s nothing like the love and support of family, or of a partner, to make up for this. Moreover, fans expressed a lot of heart-warmed emotions around a video that DDG uploaded on Snapchat of him hosting a personal awards show for his boo, Halle Bailey. He gave her multiple statues for “Best Woman,” “Best Artist,” “Best Partner,” “Best Mother,” and more along with their baby boy Halo, and she actually got quite emotional during this.

Overall, it was quite the wholesome sight to see, and a fitting and deserving celebration of the “In Your Hands” singer. Of course, DDG and Halle Bailey turn this into a two-way street, as they always support and celebrate each other in whatever endeavor they engage in. It’s nice to see them enjoy social media and fan interaction in a more open and fun way these days. Before Halo’s birth, constant nagging and speculation around her pregnancy made it very difficult for them to do pretty much anything else without getting an avalanche of newborn attention.

Regardless, we’re sure that the couple has many more great things to come, whether individually or together. DDG is still working hard to keep his rap career going and expand his portfolio of interests and ventures, whereas Halle will reunite with her sister Chlöe for some new music soon. Halle Reaches New Heights Of Love With Her Ballad, ‘In Your Hands’

Halle is back and stronger than ever. Earlier this year, the remarkably talented multihyphenate revealed she gave birth to a baby son with her longtime partner, rapper DDG. She’s also been teasing new solo music, as she and her sister, Chlöe, have been working on new material — both as a duo and as solo acts. Tonight (March 15), Halle shared her new single, “In Your Hands.”

On “In Your Hands,” Halle waxes romantic, as she feels empowered when her love holds her. Fully aware of the power she possesses, Halle warns him not to fumble her, as this type of love only comes once in a lifetime.

“In your hands, in your hands / The world is yours when I’m in it / In your hands, in your hands / You can’t let go or you’ll lose your chance / ‘Cause after me, you’ll never fall in love again,” she sings on the song’s chorus.

In the song’s accompanying video, Halle is seen in the ocean, moving effortlessly through the water.

In a follow-up scene, Halle is in the mountains and flawlessly nails a guitar riff. As Halle is the only person in the video, she offers a simple reminder that she, alone, is enough to change her lover’s life.

While Chloe X Halle fans clamor for a comeback from their favorite duo, the Bailey sisters themselves have been advancing their individual careers. While 2023 appeared to be Chlöe’s chance to shine as a solo artist while Halle enjoyed the Hollywood spotlight, it looks like the younger sister is ready to start rolling out her own solo album. Now that the release of The Color Purple is over and her new baby Halo is a few months old, Halle has begun to tease her next move: a solo single called “In Your Hands.”

She revealed the release date for the single on Twitter in a post suggesting what fans might be able to expect. In apparent cover photo for the single, Halle kneels in the desert, playing a guitar and whipping her hair across her face. The image, paired with a reply from her sister that reads, “My rockstar,” has fans expecting some Lenny Kravitz-esque rock’n’roll on Halle’s single, which would certainly help set her music apart from Chlöe’s hip-hop-flavored R&B approach.

Chlöe, meanwhile, has also continued her solo career, dropping the single “FYS” to start the year. So, while we might not be getting a new Chloe X Halle project right away, we could be getting projects from both Chlöe AND Halle, which is almost just as good.

At the 2024 ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards Ceremony, Halle revealed she was enjoying her “gift.”

“There was no way in hell I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that,” Bailey said. “With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for damn sure, no one on the planet was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world.”

The sentiment echoes that of the child’s father, DDG. Speaking with Hollywood Unlocked, DDG revealed the decision was to push away “negative vibes.”

“I think it was more so people was already giving us negative vibes, so it’s like why let ‘em know then make her pregnancy stressful?”

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards featured several notable moments. From Barbra Streisand’s Life Achievement Award speech to Pedro Pascal being swept up in Ciara’s beauty and even Billie Eilish signing superfan Melissa McCarthy’s face, the ceremony had something for all to enjoy.

But the most sincere moment occurred during the event’s preshow when Sterling K. Brown and his wife (fellow actor) Ryan Michelle Bathe paused their interview to praise Halle Bailey. As the couple spoke with Entertainment Tonight, Brown unabashedly fanned out over Bailey, specifically, her performance in 2023’s The Little Mermaid (directed by Rob Marshall). Brown displayed his inner thespian with an impromptu reenactment of Bailey’s recreating the mermaid’s infamous water hair flip. Although Bailey was there as a cast nominee for The Color Purple, she didn’t mind chatting about her box office smash as the fictional Princess Ariel. As Bailey relived the moment, Brown’s kind words began to sink in; she was nearly moving to tears.

She reposted the clip sharing a sweet note to the power couple.

Bailey didn’t leave with a trophy but still enjoyed herself, according to her post on X (formerly Twitter). “I was so honored to be nominated with my beautiful ‘Color Purple’ cast and family,” she wrote. “Such a fun night.”
