Smoke DZA And Flying Lotus Might Have An EP Of The Year Contender With “Flying Objects”

Smoke DZA and Flying Lotus are truly a match made in heaven. The duo has just released their first collaborative project together with their brand new EP. Flying Objects is one of the best, if not the best EPs of 2023 and we are about to break down why. Firstly though, let us give you the basic information and some background on it. Flying Objects is five tracks that equal a runtime of 14 minutes and 14 seconds. DZA brings on features from some heavy hitters in this quick effort. Conway the Machine, Black Thought, and Estelle appear in songs two, four, and five.

Furthermore, all of the production is handled by legendary Los Angeles producer, Flying Lotus. He brings elements of trap, cloud rap, boom-bap, and R&B. Finally, there were two singles for the promotion of this EP. “Drug Trade” with Black Thought and “Harlem World 97” with Estelle were both released in the past two months. Now, why is this EP so good? Well, both DZA and Lotus complement each other’s styles so well. The hazy, laid-back, and euphoric production along with the lyrics about dope, money, and being the man, is the perfect unison.

Perhaps the best song on the EP, “Drug Trade” featuring Black Thought, has it all. The woozy flow from DZA, the drums and whimsical synths from Lotus, and the lyrical talent from Thought form a truly special song. It is really sad that the duo does not have a full album together. But, we can continue to dream that will happen one day.

What are your initial thoughts on this brand new EP, Flying Objects, from Smoke DZA and Flying Lotus? Is this one of the best EPs of 2023? Should Smoke DZA and Flying Lotus make a full-length project in the near future? Flying Lotus’s Film ‘Ash’ Will Star Tessa Thompson And Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Earlier this year, Grammy Award-winning producer Flying Lotus, whose real name is Steven Ellison, signed a multi-picture deal via his company Brainfeeder Films with French company Logical Pictures and XYZ Films to direct and produce a slew of upcoming movies. One of them is Ash, about which he said, “I’ve a strong desire to innovate in the sci-fi space and I really want to show the world something they’ve never seen before.”

More information about Ash has finally arrived today. The cast will include Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with Thompson taking on the role of a woman who wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station murdered. She meets a man, played by Gordon-Levitt, and is unsure whether or not she should trust him and let him save her. While they investigate the murders, he wonders if she is innocent. Ellison is set to start shooting the film next year in New Zealand.

About the multi-picture deal, Logical Pictures Group President Frédéric Fiore expressed his enthusiasm and appreciation for Ellison and his future in the film industry, saying in March, “FlyLo is a highly talented and respected musician with such a unique creative universe.”

Musicians React To Comedian Jak Knight’s Untimely Death

Jak Knight, a comedian known for co-creating and acting on Peacock original series, Bust Down, has died at 28. In addition to Bust Down, Knight was a writer on shows like Blackish and Big Mouth, on the latter of which, he voiced DeVon. Although he proved to be a promising comedian, Knight was very much known and loved within the realm of music.

In 2018, Knight appeared in a live version of Zach Fox’s Bruh podcast, alongside rapper Amine. In one of his most iconic stand-ups, he hilariously detailed Chance The Rapper‘s career evolution and recounts a time when he saw the rapper perform at a music festival while on shrooms.

“I thought I was in The DaVinci Code, directed by Jordan Peele. This sh*t was crazy as hell,” he said in a Comedy Central special.

Following the news of his death, several musicians have taken to social media to mourn the loss of Knight.

“RIP to Jak Knight,” said Flying Lotus, “honestly was my fav comedian these days. Unapologetically bold and hilarious.”

Producer Kenny Beats also expressed sadness over Knight’s death, tweeting “Rip Jak I’m heartbroken.”

Television personality and rapper Steelo Brim, who once had Knight as a guest on his Wine And Weed podcast, said “Truly don’t know what to say but Jak Knight was & is the man. He will be forever missed and loved, lit up every room and was as pure as they come. F*ck this one hurts.

A cause of death has not yet been confirmed for Knight.

Flying Lotus Drops The Singles ‘The Room’ And ‘You Don’t Know’ With Vocalist Devin Tracy

While Flying Lotus is no stranger to vocal collaborations on his albums, the producer is best known for the prolific canvases he creates on his own. Sure, the Kendrick Lamar-featured “Never Catch Me” is considered by some as FlyLo’s magnum opus, but for some diehards, we’d love to hear more tunes like 2014’s “Your Potential//The Beyond,” where vocalist Niki Randa adds thick vocal textures to the tune. It seems as though FlyLo is indeed entering the point in his career where he’s leaning further into vocalists to help him bring new depths to his music. Look at his last album Flamagra, which featured notable collabs with vocalists in Anderson .Paak, George Clinton, Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano, Thundercat, and others. But those are all known commodities, which don’t have the same allure that someone like say, Randa, brought in the past, as perhaps his muse.

Enter Devin Tracy, a classically-trained future R&B vocalist, who released an EP in Soulection’s Black Label series in 2018 and last year’s Don’t Take It Personal EP, but is a relative unknown. Lotus discovered Tracy at a recent session and it seems as though a creative connection quickly blossomed between the pair. Now, FlyLo’s new singles, “The Room” and “You Don’t Know,” feature Tracy on vocals and the diehards will be pleased.

“The Room” kicks off the two movement release with those familiar FlyLo layered strings intertwined with snares, as Tracy ranges all over the map with his evocative delivery. “You Don’t Know” is definitely more drums focused, but Tracy is a revelation on both, going from high registers on down and back.

Flying Lotus will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl on August 21st, backed by the Bowl Orchestra, and this new release effectively whets the palate for more new tunes this year from the Grammy-winning producer.
