Ryan Coogler Handcuffed At Bank Of America After Being Falsely Accused Of Trying To Rob Bank

RyanCooglertoWrite,Direct'BlackPanther'

Ryan Coogler was handcuffed and put in the back of a cop car after being falsely accused of trying to rob a Bank of America in Atlanta.

According to TMZ, the incident happened in January. Coogler went into the Bank of America branch with a mask, sunglasses, and a beanie and wrote a note to the bank teller, asking them to withdraw $12,000 from his account. Coogler also asked for the teller to be “discrete” and count the money away from the counter.

When the teller went to make the transaction, it triggered some sort of alert and she notified her boss that Coogler was attempting to rob the bank. When authorities arrived, they handcuffed Coogler and two men waiting on Coogler in an SUV.

After doing some investigating, authorities realized they made a mistake and let Coogler go.

In a statement made to Variety, Coogler said that the incident did occur and the issue has since been resolved. “This situation should never have happened,” he stated. “However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.”

Today In Hip Hop History: Cult Classic Film ‘New Jack City’ Premiered in Theaters 31 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 03 08 at 9.06.40 AM

On this day, 31 years ago, the cult-classic crime thriller New Jack City arrived in theaters across America. The story of the rise and fall of Nino Brown and the Cash Money Brothers has continued inspired Hip Hop culture for a quarter-century and continues to permeate the culture that made it a success.

New Jack City came about at a pivotal time. In 1991, Hip Hop was still a fledging music genre and culture, looking to legitimize itself in the eyes of mainstream America officially. In addition, the blaxploitation film genre had been defunct for over a decade, leaving a gaping hole in “Black Hollywood.” New Jack City was a harbinger of the resurgence of Black actors, writers, and filmmakers in Hollywood, as well as the crystallization of Hip Hop’s synergistic capabilities.

The film also catapulted actors like Wesley Snipes, who played the lead role as the morally barren kingpin Nino Brown and Chris Rock stick-up-kid-turned-crackhead-informant “Pookie,” into stardom. The film’s director Mario Van Peebles also made his directorial debut with the film, which he also starred in. Ice T, who also played a major role in New Jack City as NYPD detective “Scotty Appleton,” spoke with Rock on his “Final Level” podcast about some of the behind-the-scenes of the cult classic.

Chris Rock: At the time, you and I were the most popular people in the cast, really, just ’cause we’d done s**t.

Ice-T: We’d done things.

Chris Rock: Nobody knew Mario [Van Peebles]. Nobody knew Wesley [Snipes].

Ice-T: Wesley had done Major League.

Chris Rock: No one knew “G-Money,” you know, Allen Payne.

Ice-T: That was what got me confident enough to act.

Chris Rock: And you were actually making money. [Laughs] I was broke.

Ice-T: … You know, it was an interesting experience. New Jack City was a new-jack movie. The director was a new-jack.

Chris Rock: The producers were new-jacks, new-jack actors, new-jack soundtrack. Remember we kept runnin’ out of money? There was a couple of times, while we were filming, we were like, “This s**t is getting shut down.” Like, the chase on the bikes was [suppose to be] a car-chase. But it turned into a bike-chase; we had no money! [Laughs] Somebody had to think fast.

The film was shot on an $8 million budget and premiered at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival on January 17, 1991. The film would later release nationally on March 8, 1991, raking in $7,039,622 in opening weekend sales — and later became the highest-grossing indie film of 1991 with $47,624,253 domestically.

The film also had a longstanding effect on the music industry. Perhaps the most notable example is brother Bryan “Birdman” and Ronald “Slim” Williams‘ Cash Money Records label, a blatant reworking of Nino Brown’s “Cash Money Brothers” gang in the film. In addition, Lil Wayne‘s solo album series Tha Carter is not only his last name but an homage to “The Carter,” Nino’s crack house fortress in the film, as well as name drops Nino in his 2010 single “I’m Single.”

For decades, Nino Brown has become a regularly referenced movie character in rap lyrics. A simple search of “Nino Brown” on RapGenius shows over 4000 references to the surface by artists from all over the world. It’s safe to say Nino and New Jack City will continue to inspire generations to come, and if you disagree…

Will Smith Award Acceptance Speech 28th Annual SAG Awards TNT 0 12 screenshot

Will Smith won the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams in the film King Richard. In a tearful speech, Smith highlighted the win as “one of the greatest moments” of his career and touched on what it meant to portray Williams.

“Richard Williams is a dreamer like no one you’ve ever known,” said Smith. “He has a power of belief that borders on insanity and sometimes tips over the border, which is absolutely necessary to take something from impossible to possible.”

In the win, Smith won over Andrew Garfield, Benedict Cumberbatch, Javier Bardem, and Denzel Washington. Speaking with PEOPLE, Smith highlighted special words he received from Washington in the recent time they have spent together. “This is your year,” Smith said Washington, his mentor, told him.

“He just hugged me and he said, ‘I’m so happy for you. Just love who you’re becoming,’” Smith said. “He knew me years ago, I would go to Denzel for advice so he’s seen me through the years and he was just telling me how proud he is of who I’ve become and what I’ve become. He was saying that he felt like a weight was lifted off of his shoulders somehow.”

[WATCH] Laverne Cox Doubles Down On Awkward Mention Of Entanglement To The Smiths

Over the weekend while hosting the SAG Awards red carpet for E! Laverne Cox awkardly brought up Jada Pinkett-Smiths affair with August Alsina while speaking to Will and Jada.

Two years ago Jada Pinkett-Smith used the word entanglement to describe her relationship with R&B singer August Alsina despite being married to Will Smith. The world watched her show Red Table and witnessed a sullen Will watch as Jada exposed the dark side of their marriage.

During an interview at the SAG Awards, Laverne Cox awkwardly brings up the word entanglement while interviewing Will and Jada on the red carpet.
Laverne Cox recently went live on Instagram and told her followers that she understands that they’re upset, but that she’ll only apologize to Will and Jada if they personally request it, and it happens in private.

Samuel L. Jackson Says He Should Have Won Oscar For Pulp Fiction When Talking About Academy Awards

o

It is no doubt that Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most prolific actors ever. He has starred in over 150 films and his films have collectively grossed over $27 billion worldwide, making him the highest-grossing actor of all time. He has appeared in Academy Award-nominated films, multiple animated films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even Snakes On A Plane. With that said, by now you would have thought an actor of Sam Jackson’s status would have won at least one academy award by now.

In a recent interview with The Times, Jackson said that he should have won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s classic 1994 film, Pulp Fiction.

“I should have won,” Jackson said. He went on to cite that he should have at least gotten nominated for his role as Gator in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever. He was beaten out of a nomination by two actors from the film Bugsy.

“My wife and I went to see Bugsy,” he says. “Damn! They got nominated and I didn’t? I guess black folk usually win for doing despicable shit on screen. Like Denzel [Washington] for being a horrible cop in Training Day. All the great stuff he did in uplifting roles like Malcolm X? No — we’ll give it to this motherf***er. So maybe I should have won one. But Oscars don’t move the comma on your cheque — it’s about getting asses in seats and I’ve done a good job of doing that.”

Despite not winning an Academy Award, Jackson is receiving Honorary Oscar at the 2022 Governors Awards on March 25. He also believes that the metrics that determine who wins and who loses are screwed up as well. He thinks that there should be an award for the “most popular movie” and thinks that Spider-Man: No Way Home should win the award because it was definitely the most popular movie of 2021.

“They should! It did what movies did forever — it got people to a big dark room,” he said, adding later, “All movies are valid. Some go to the cinema to be moved dearly. Some like superheroes. If somebody has more butts on seats it just means your audience is not as broad. There are people who have had successful careers but nobody can recite one line of their parts. I’m the guy who says shit that’s on a T-shirt.”
