Will Smith 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards Performance Would’ve Happened If Fat Joe Had His Way

Today (October 10), the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards will be airing after filming took place in Atlanta last week. We got a look at what some of our favourite stars wore on the red carpet already, but when it comes to what went down inside, there’s still much to be seen on the small screen this evening. Fat Joe was tapped to host the annual ceremony, and ahead of its premiere, he spoke with PEOPLE about the artist he desperately wanted to see perform, but unfortunately couldn’t secure.

“You know who I didn’t successfully get was Will Smith,” the Terror Squad lyricist confessed, revealing that his hope was to have the actor do a hip-hop 50 tribute. “I was really trying to get Will Smith to come out and do ‘Summer Time’. He’s filming ‘Bad Boys,’ but we tried. We try to pull off a miracle if we can. We try to pull a cloud out of the sky,” Joe additionally noted.

Fat Joe Wanted to See Will Smith Perform “Summertime”

As for what viewers can expect to see, increased confidence from the 53-year-old is on the list. This marks his second year MCing the event, which he’s long been preparing for. “I always think back to being in junior high and doing the talent shows and then Apollo Theater Amateur Night and it all leads to this. And so it’s an honour for me,” Joe revealed. He also shared that we’ll see a total of eight outfit changes throughout the evening in an attempt to keep up with the notoriously stylish women of rap.

He may not have been able to come through for the annual BET Hip Hop Awards, but that doesn’t mean Will Smith isn’t still bringing new contributions to the genre. Just last month he announced that his Class of ’88 podcast will be coming soon to examine the world of rap during his younger years. Read more about that project at the link below, and let us know if you’ll be watching Fat Joe on hosting duty later this evening in the comments.

Fat Joe, Rick Ross, Chuck D and More team with Power to the Patients for PSA on Honest & Transparent Healthcare System

A powerhouse lineup of hip-hop legends, including Fat Joe, Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, French Montana, and Chuck D, has teamed up with Power to the Patients to release a compelling public service announcement (PSA). Their collective voices demand transparency in the healthcare system, urging elected officials to create an equitable, affordable, and honest healthcare framework nationwide.

As Congress prepares to vote on healthcare transparency bills in Washington, D.C., these iconic artists advocate for more robust price transparency laws. They call for hospitals and insurance companies to publish actual prices for their services and procedures, a move that aims to rectify these institutions’ disregard for existing federal transparency rules.

The PSA highlights the prevalent practice of hospitals and insurers providing only “estimates” or “average prices,” which the hip-hop icons argue stifles competition and results in overcharges, debt, fear, and devastation for countless Americans. Chuck D, frontman of Public Enemy, describes the situation as “an American humanitarian crisis.”

This collective advocacy follows the persistent efforts of Power to the Patients and Grammy-nominated artist and philanthropist Fat Joe, who have engaged with lawmakers, visited The White House, and rallied on Capitol Hill. They aim to express frustration with the healthcare system and champion the rights of patients, families, communities, employees, employers, and unions nationwide.

Earlier this year, Fat Joe and Power To The Patients joined forces with New York City Council Members and various union groups, leading to Mayor Eric Adams signing the Healthcare Accountability and Consumer Protection Act in June 2023. This groundbreaking legislation established the nation’s first Office of Health Care Accountability, enabling New Yorkers to compare hospital costs for identical services.

As hip-hop celebrates its 50th anniversary, these artists confront a rigged healthcare system. They emphasize that hospitals often coerce patients into signing service contracts without revealing actual prices, resulting in widespread fear that deters millions from seeking necessary medical care, jeopardizing their health and lives.

Medical debt remains the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in America, and a recent study by Patient Rights Advocate revealed that only 36% of U.S. hospitals comply with the current Federal Price Transparency Rule.

[WATCH] Fat Joe Says Suge Knight Robbed A Room Full Of Rappers Except Cool & Dre

Screen Shot 2023 09 05 at 1.30.18 PM

In an exclusive interview with Cam Capone News, Terror Squad general Fat Joe spoke about one of the most infamous, yet unbelievable stories about Death Row CEO Marion “Suge” Knight.

After giving Suge his flowers for his tremendous contributions to Hip Hop culture, Joey Crack went on to explain why Knight was also such a problem in the game. Joe began, “At the end of the day, he did a lot of good things for Hip Hop, the man made $300 million legitly and got it taken from him…he lost his eyesight and eventually went to jail.” He continued about Knight, stating, ” Suge Knight is no different than O.J. Simpson. O.J. Simpson got away with some shit, but then went to get his own shit and went to jail. Some motherf*****s walking the earth know that if you slip on the wrong banana peel, they’re gonna give you 10,000 years. They got a bed waiting for you. it’s just what mistake are you going to make to get in that bed.”

Joe merged into a story about Terror Squad producers Cool and Dre at the BMI Awards in Los Angeles, where they both had their first run-in with the general of “the world’s most dangerous record label”. Both Cool and Dre noticed as they entered whatthey thought was the VIP entrance, that all of the attendees, including some famous, yet unnamed people, were being relieved of their jewelry at the door. At the door’s threshold was Suge Knight, who Joe says was “professionally” taking everyone’s shines. Because of their association with Joe, they were allowed to keep their jewels, but the Terror Squad producers felt guilty for being allowed to keep their ice.

See the interview below.

Fat Joe Recounts A Horrific Story With A Man In A Santa Costume

Rappers who have been in the hip-hop space for decades will always have a plethora of thought-provoking and legendary stories to talk about for hours on end. One icon that can gather people around for a good anecdote is New Yorker through and through, Fat Joe. The 53-year-old from the South Bronx has done a great service to the East Coast providing classics such as “Lean Back,” “All The Way Up,” “What’s Luv?” and countless others. On top of his decorated music career, Fat Joe has countless memories from his past that are incredibly fascinating.

Just yesterday on September 3, the rapper retold a frightening encounter with a random man in public. Fat Joe went on his Instagram Live to take a trip in the time machine when he was approached and called out by a man in a Santa Claus suit. Joe appears to remember it like it was yesterday as he explains in detail what happened to him. Obviously, he is still here to share it, but this man really threatened him and could have done something terrible.

Fat Joe Lives To Tell The Tale

Joe gives us the scenario to start, “I came out of the jewelers and this guy sees me. The guy is wearing a Santa Claus outfit, but it’s the summer… He’s got money in his hand — a bunch of singles, dirty singles — he looked like he went to the strip club with oil. He continues, “He sees me and he goes, ‘You! You muthafucka!’ So I’m looking at him because nobody does that to me. But obviously, you know, the guy was mentally disturbed. Mental illness, schizophrenia?” The man also shouts at Joe, “‘Oooh, you rich muthaf****! I have nothing! No one loves me!’” Joe says in the Live, “The man got a knife or something. He was in a horrible state of mind. But… I was impressed that I exercised patience.” The rapper told the man “God bless you,” because he felt he could not do anything for the guy. Thankfully Joe is still here to talk about it, and if the man is suffering from some illness, we hope he is getting the treatment he needs.

What are your initial thoughts on this story from Fat Joe and the man in the Santa Claus suit? Is this one of the most odd stories you have ever heard? What do you think the man was dealing with mentally or emotionally? We want to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Today In Hip Hop History: Fat Joe’s Third LP ‘Don Cartagena’ Turns 25 Years Old!

On this date in 1998, Terror Squad general Fat Joe released his third full length album Don Cartagena on the Atlantic/Big Beat/Terror Squad imprint.

On his first “official” release of Terror Squad as a crew and label, Fat Joe garnered the support from his then TS crew Armageddon, Triple Seis, Cuban Link and new recruit standout Big Punisher to pull together a superstar-laden album that would catapult TS to an equal level of success. With Pun’s almost overnight stardom from the smash single “Still Not A Player”, it gave Joe the leeway to bring in the rest of the crew sans Remy Ma, who was in Bedford Hill Correctional Facility. Singles such as “Bet Ya Man Can’t (Triz)” and “The Hidden Hand” left fans looking for that Terror Squad album with the original cast members, but internal strife only allowed those tracks to bring those thoughts into fruition. The real album feature was of course the Ski-produced “John Blaze”, which featured Nas, Jadakiss, Raekwon and Pun, is still considered one of the greatest joint tracks ever laid.

The album’s commercial success reflected the response from the fans, being Joe’s first top ten Billboard 200 release, grabbing a A- from EW and selling 100,000 in its first week was right in line of the thinking of The Don. Within a month, Don Cartagena was certified gold by the RIAA.

Salute to Joe, Pun(RIP), the entire original Terror Squad, Just Blaze, Dame Grease, Preemo and everyone else involved in the making of this Hip Hop classic!
