Jim Jones Says He’ll Charge Dr. Dre $2M If He Drops Unreleased Dipset Records

Not everyone gets to be a fly on the wall during a Dr. Dre session but even fewer get the opportunity to actually work with him directly. We could imagine that there are hard drives upon hard drives of unreleased music throughout his career, whether from the Death Row era or the mythical Detox, which will likely never see the light of day. But, somewhere in the vault contains an EP of unreleased Dipset records produced by Dr. Dre.

Jim Jones recently sat down with All Hip Hop where he detailed some of the work he did with Dr. Dre alongside the rest of Dipset. He explained that there’s unreleased music sitting in the vault, though he also reflected on the level of perfection that Dr. Dre aspired towards. Jones said that Dre brought Dipset into the studio to “recreate his sound” at the height of the Harlem group’s dominance. At the time, Dre was working on a new album and evidently, he wanted some of their swag to compliment his sound.

Jim Jones Reveals Dr. Dre-Produced Dipset Records

If you’ve heard any story about working with Dr. Dre, the general consensus is that he has an incredible ear for sound. So good, in fact, that even the most seasoned of MCs will find themselves under a microscope for each bar, inflection, and ad-lib. Jones learned that first-hand as he explained that it was the first time anyone made him re-record a verse several times. “It was the first time had somebody really make me do my verse over like twenty times,” the rapper said. “It had made me think about Tupac and Snoop and all the others that had to get the beats from Dre.”

Jones revealed that they recorded about four to five songs in total when working with Dr. Dre. Unfortunately, the producer kept those records on his hard drive without Jim Jones, Cam’ron or Juelz receiving a copy of their work. Though it’s unlikely if they’ll ever see the light of day, Jones explained that he’s anticipating a huge check if any of the music drops. “He better not put it out because I am charging him $2 million for my verse.”

Today In Hip Hop History: The Diplomats’ Debut Album ‘Diplomatic Immunity’ Turns 20 Years Old!

Screen Shot 2023 03 25 at 12.04.18 PM

On this date two decades ago, Cam’ron’s crew from Harlem, The Diplomats, dropped their debut album Diplomatic Immunity on the Roc A Fella Records/Def Jam imprint during the pivotal time when Dame Dash appointed Cam’ron as the President of Roc-A-Fella Records.

Coming on the heels of the release of Cam’s Come Home With Me LP, Diplomatic Immunity introduced the entire Dipset squad, including Juelz Santana, Jim Jones, Freekey Zeekey, Un Kasa, and Hell Rell. With production from the likes of Heatmakerz, DR Period, and a then virtually unknown Kanye West, the trailblazing sound of old soul samples pushed Dipset to the forefront of the creative curve of Hip Hop, which offered the Blood-affiliated crew from Uptown an almost cult-like following. Rell was incarcerated by the time the album was available for purchase.

The album was saturated with longstanding hits such as “I Really Mean It,” the infectious “Dipset Anthem,” the female-friendly “Hey Ma,” and the Master P assisted “Bout It Bout It…Part I “. Commercially, the album was considered average, debuting at #8 on the Billboard 200 and selling 92,000 copies in its first week, but the album was certified Gold by the RIAA in 2005.

Salute to Cam, Juelz on the inside, Jim Jones, Freekey, and Hell Rell for this 20 year old classic piece of Hip Hop history!

Jim Jones Wants A ‘Verzuz’ Rematch After Dipset Got Smoked By The Lox

The status of Verzuz, the brainchild of powerhouse producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, is currently up in the air. However, that hasn’t stopped legacy acts and fans alike from creating their fantasy onstage battles online or in interviews. In fact, Wiz Khalifa, 21 Savage, and Jermaine Dupri are just a few of the musicians that are open to the idea of putting up their discography to compete against another musical opponent. However, there’s a former participant that is looking to redeem themselves in a second face-off.

Rapper Jim Jones, a proud member of the rap collective Dipset (comprised of Juelz Santana, Cam’Ron, and himself), wants a Verzuz rematch against rap titans The Lox (which is comprised of Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Jadakiss). Back in August 2021, the groups took the stage of Madison Square Garden, where The Lox was declared the evening’s victors unanimously. The landslide victory even birthed several memes and GIFs, which still flood around Black Twitter to this day.

Now that the pain of defeat stings a little less, Capo admitted to AllHipHop TV that, as a group, they could’ve done better. The “Back In My Prime” rapper was honest with the host revealing that they did not practice but if offered the chance to do it again, things would be different.

“I think we need proper respect of doing it in the Garden, the big Garden, with proper security, set up right so everybody have breathing room. Not using it as no excuse, but we need a rematch for the city. I’m puttin’ it out there. I’m puttin’ it out there like Rocky after he lost to Apollo Creed — And we gonna be ready like hot spaghetti,” said Jones.

The entertainer also had suggestions on how the rematch should be scored, saying, “Let’s score it like a boxing match. Let’s get the judges. Let’s make it live. Let the people vote live. Let’s do it right. Let’s really go for it.”

Cam’ron Confirms “Killa Season 2” Will Drop Before The End Of 2023

Cam’ron isn’t necessarily active in music as much as we’d like him to be. Though he blessed fans with the release of U Wasn’t There with DJ A-Trak in 2022, his efforts seem focused on his numerous businesses under the Flee Farm umbrella. He has his own line of cannabis products, natural male supplements, and most recently, a sports talk show alongside Ma$e, who he patched things up with in 2021 after years of feuding. The two even released new music together but their plans for a joint project and a tour seemingly fell through.

More than music, many fans have hoped for Cam’ron’s return to the big screen. Though his acting resume is quite short, his acting chops have won fans over in films like Paid In Full and his own self-directed effort, Killa Season. The latter accompanied the release of his 2006 album of the same name. Despite its low budget quality, it gained a cult following and became a hood classic that remains a celebrated piece of Dipset’s incredible history throughout the years.

Cam’ron Teases “Killa Season 2”

It looks like a sequel could be on the way, according to Cam’ron’s Instagram page. The rapper previously began hinting at the album’s release in 2021, though much like Camdemic and The Program 2, there have been no updates in recent times. Still, fans have hounded the Harlem legend to share a sequel to his 2006 movie. “We still waiting on part 2,” a fan wrote on their Instagram story while tagging the “Oh Boy” MC. The comment evidently caught his attention and he confirmed that he would be seeing the project before the end of the year. He wrote in response, “Fine I’ll do it Ks2 this Christmas. You’re welcome!!!”

Killa Season is a semi-autobiographical film that follows Cam’ron (as Flee) from his early beginnings as a high school basketball star who transforms into a full-time heroin dealer. Though it could be described as a crime drama, Killa Season did an incredible show of showcasing Cam’s unmatched humor, like the moment where he spits on a little girl’s face. It’s unclear what the plot of Killa Season 2 will consist of but we’re certainly excited to see what Cam has up his sleeve.

Jim Jones Says He & Cam’ron Don’t See “Eye To Eye”

Jim Jones and Cam’ron haven’t necessarily been spotted together in recent times, though it seemed like it was largely due to their busy schedules. Cam’ron’s expanding the Flee Farm brand with endeavors in cannabis and his all-natural male supplement, Pink Horse Power. Meanwhile, Jim Jones has been delivering some of the best music in his career over the past few years with projects like El Chapo, Wasted Talent, and Back In My Prime with Hitmaka which he released over this weekend.

Back In My Prime not only showcases Jim Jones’ versatility, especially when it comes to crafting hits, but he also dives into some personal matters. On “Status Update,” for example, he sheds light on some issues weighing on him including his friendship with Cam’ron. Though the two recently appeared together at Drake’s Apollo Theatre show with the rest of Dipset, Jones admitted that they aren’t seeing “eye to eye” lately. “And it’s hard for me & Cam to see eye-to-eye/ I love him, I still love him but when I see him it’s like hi & bye,” he raps. “It’s kinda crazy, I thought it was ride or die.”

Jim Jones & Cam’ron’s Fractured Relationship

Though Jim Jones and Cam’ron’s relationship hasn’t deteriorated completely, as it once was, he said during an interview in Feb. 2022 that he and Cam’ron hadn’t talked or seen each other since Verzuz in August 2021. He didn’t say that there were any issues. However, he explained that he had to offer Cam his own earnings from Verzuz to get him to agree to appear at the face-off against The Lox. “Cam don’t care about too much, he makes money and that’s what he cares about,” Jones admitted.

However, years prior, Cam’ron said that Dipset was officially over in the midst of his feud with Jim Jones. The “We Fly High” rapper appeared on Funk Flex where he shed tears when asked about the sacrifices he made for Cam’ron and Dipset. Cam later addressed his comments and downplayed Jim’s overall feelings. Eventually, they buried the hatchet to reunite as Dipset before unveiling their 2018 EP, Diplomatic Ties. Still, the two recently worked together on Cam’ron’s U Wasn’t There EP on the single, “Think Boy” alongside Styles P

Jadakiss Reflects On Positive Opportunities & Outcomes From Iconic “Verzuz” Battle

The Verzuz battle between The Lox and Dipset might go down as the series’ best, and Jadakiss recently spoke on the positive opportunities it brought to his veteran career. Of course, the battle captivated so many, and a large part of that audience had Jada to thank. The Lox MC gave a stellar performance that secured his group’s win, and he recently spoke on the I Am Athlete podcast on how it brought him much success. Even though he mentioned things like increased booking prices and press opportunities, he seemed most touched by the respect from the game’s youngest.

“We did the Verzuz,” the Yonkers native began. “The very next morning, Ye called, sent a jet. He sent a jet, we flew to Atlanta to the arena, did a song for his last album. Then it was just like a trickle down of opportunities coming left and right. Magazines, Rolling Stone, this and that. Shoutout to Fat Joe for ‘Yesterday’s price is not today’s price!’ The numbers on my featurings, performances, hostings, everything automatically shot up. My whole albums shot up on Apple and all of them platforms. A lot of the young artists called me that next day. That’s- more than any money that I received or any of that, the next day, a lot of them reached out to me.”

Jadakiss Speaks On The Positive Effects Of His “Verzuz” Battle

Granted, respect for the 47-year-old lyricist was long overdue from the younger generation and casual hip-hop fans alike. Since that event, The Lox’s legacy and Jadakiss’ reputation as an MC saw newfound public appreciation. For example, he recently praised a new mural of the rap collective in the Bronx. “This s**t mean!” he said of the artwork in an Instagram video.

Meanwhile, Jada is just as rooted in his career’s history as he is appreciative and cognizant of its newfound glory. After Kanye West’s series of bigoted and scrutinized public remarks during the fall of last year, the New York rapper emphasized empathy. As many hip-hop heads know, their mutual respect for one another is longstanding. “Prayer,” he responded to a TMZ reporter’s question on what Ye needs to move forward. “Everybody needs to pray for Kanye and let the lord work it out. It’ll be alright.” He went on to say that he supports artists no matter what and that Kanye should apologize “whoever he offended.” Regardless of your take on his perspective, stick around on HNHH for the latest on Jadakiss.
