Cordae Takes A Tour Of LA In His Reflective ‘Dream In Color’ Video

Cordae’s comeback continues today with the reflective video for “Dream In Color” from his newly released EP, Just Until…. The video is shot in DIY style, following Cordae and his crew as they wander the streets of Los Angeles, stopping at city landmark Jim’s Burgers (hell yes, that’s a landmark, and any real Angeleno will tell you so) for a quick bite before continuing their explorations.

“Dream In Color” is Cordae’s second video from Just Until… after the sentimental “More Life,” as well as his second video of the year overall. Before releasing the EP, Cordae closed out 2020 with videos for “The Parables,” “Soda” with DJ Scheme and Ski Mask The Slump God, “Freeze Tag” with Dinner Party and Snoop Dogg, and “Gifted” with Roddy Ricch. The handful of releases followed a name change after he left the YBN crew and spent much of 2020 working on a follow-up to his Grammy-nominated debut, The Lost Boy. He also turned up at the US Open, where he cheered on his girlfriend, champion tennis star Naomi Osaka.

With two songs down from his four-song EP, the question now is whether the next video we see from him will be from Just Until… or the long-awaited Lost Boy follow-up.

Cordae Gives A Tour Of His Old Neighborhood In The Sentimental ‘More Life’ Video

It’s been nearly six months since Cordae last graced fans with new music, but that all changed Thursday with the release of his four-track EP Just Until, which is meant to hold fans over until his next album’s release. To celebrate the EP’s debut, Cordae went back to his hometown to go to some of the places that shaped his youth in a video to his Q-Tip-featuring track “More Life.”

Throughout the “More Life” visual, Cordae takes a tour of his old neighborhood. He revisits his former apartment and walks through the halls of his old middle school and college, which he dropped out of. All the while, Cordae runs into grateful fans, snaps a few photos, reminisces on the days of his youth, and offers words of advice for staying true to yourself and following your dreams.

The visual concluded with Cordae receiving some wise words from Q-Tip over the phone. “I get the light from you, you get the light from me, we give it to each other and we give it to the world. That’s what it’s supposed to be,” Q-Tip says, to which Cordae replies, “Yeah, that’s some bars.”

Cordae Trades Rhymes With Young Thug On His Appetizing ‘Just Until’ EP

Featuring appearances from Q-Tip and Young Thug, Cordae’s new four-song EP Just Until… gives fans a light listen as they await his full-length follow-up to 2019’s The Lost Boy. After teasing the project on social media Tuesday, he delivered as promised at midnight this morning, delivering the tape to the overjoyed reactions of fans on Twitter.

Within minutes, Cordae’s name was among the various trending topics as fans discussed the new project, with most of the attention lavished onto “Wassup,” the project’s collaboration with Young Thug. Over a rumbling beat produced by 18YOMAN, LEN 20, and Take a Daytrip, the two rappers employ a back-and-forth delivery which had fans comparing them to iconic duos like Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

Meanwhile, Cordae’s relationship with Naomi Osaka also takes center stage at multiple points throughout the project, as he references her tennis star status and even suggests she dropped out of a tournament to meet his grandmother.

On Tuesday, Cordae mentioned that the album — which he’s been working on since 2020, according to his interview with Lil Wayne last year — is nearly finished. Whether it’ll contain more material like these “throwaways” or his Roddy Ricch-featuring single “Gifted” remains to be seen. Listen to Just Until… below.

The Music World Reacts To Derek Chauvin’s Guilty Verdict

Nearly twelve months ago, the world saw another unarmed Black person die in the hands of police. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, an incident that was caught on camera by witnesses. It was yet another case of Black lives being slain by law enforcement and while Chauvin would eventually be arrested and charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, there was heavy doubt that the end result would be a guilty verdict. Well, that doubt was erased when a jury for the trial found him guilty on all charges.

A sigh of relief could be felt all around the world, from Twitter to the people who gathered outside the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Chauvin’s trial was being held. Similar sentiments could be felt within people in the music world, as they took to social media to share their thoughts about the guilty verdict. Some reactions were brief like Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion who said, “History,” and “Justice” in their respective posts. Other messages were a bit lengthier like Questlove’s who wrote, “We still have to fight for justice yall. Remember that “we voted Obama in yay racism is gone!” feeling? Yeah…let’s learn from that.” He added, “I’m happy for the Floyd family tho. Especially his daughter. But there is still a slew of mountain to climb.”

Cordae Announces A Four-Song EP Featuring Young Thug To Hold Fans Over For His Album

It has been nearly two years since the release of Cordae’s debut album The Lost Boy, and the 23-year-old Maryland native’s fans are getting antsy for a follow-up. They’ve had a few singles to old them over recently, including the Roddy Ricch-featuring “Gifted,” which made Cordae’s name change official, and “The Parables,” which put his songwriting prowess on display, but Wednesday night/Thursday morning, Cordae’s giving the world a few more appetizers ahead of his nearly-completed sophomore album.

Today, he announced the upcoming release of Just Until…, a four-song EP releasing at midnight “tomorrow” featuring guest appearances from two disparate entities that highlight the young rapper’s cross-generational appeal. On “More Life,” he’ll team up with Q-Tip, who represents the ’90s Golden Era that clearly influences much of Cordae’s work, while on “Wassup,” he’s recruited Young Thug, one of the top representatives of the modern generation of genre-bending rappers to which Cordae himself belongs.

While that tension has helped to make Cordae a favorite of both older rap fans and younger ones, as seen in his ability to convincingly collaborate with the jazzy Dinner Party crew on “Freeze Tag” and Stevie Wonder and Busta Rhymes on “Can’t Put It In The Hands Of Fate,” it’s also generated some behind-the-scenes friction. Royce Da 5’9″ recently told a podcast that Atlantic actually blocked Cordae from appearing on his Grammy-nominated The Allegory because higher-ups at the label allegedly “want to keep him young.”

However, the tracklist for Just Until… seems to suggest that the wise-beyond-his-years Cordae doesn’t care about all that — he just wants to work with the best of the best. Look out for that release on 4/21 at midnight and his full album later this year.
