Coi Leray

Throughout her career, Coi Leray has faced negative comments and criticism about her slender body type. Coi Leray Opens Up About The Anxiety That Comes With Success On The Introspective ‘Medicine’

As she gears up for the release of her debut album in 2022, Coi Leray has been stacking up the singles in a very busy 2021. The New Jersey rapper has been living up to the “next up” moniker with cuts like the TikTok hit “No More Parties” remix with Lil Durk, “At The Top” with Kodak Black and Mustard, and even a holiday remix of “Twinnem.”

Now she’s dropped her final single of the year in “Medicine” and the accompanying video. Produced by Emrld, LeRay uses the quick-hitting 80-second song to open up about the anxiety and depression that she’s felt despite becoming incredibly successful in a short time. She slides into the frenetic beat and bares her emotions. Leray shared a personal statement with fans on her Instagram stories about the song:

“Kind of been a rough year, even though I made millions, it came with a lot of depression. “Medicine” is the last song ima drop this year. This song is strictly for my fans. When I go in the booth and vent, just know I’m speaking from the heart and I meant every word in the song. Hope everyone has a great holiday and gets everything they ever dreamed of. This new year is going to be one of the biggest years of my life. I feel it. My album is going to be one of the biggest female artist albums in the world, I can promise you that. Xoxo -Coi”

Megan Thee Stallion And Lil Nas X Are TikTok’s Top Artists Of 2021 In Different Ways

Who was the top musical artist of 2021 on TikTok? Well, it depends how you look at it.

Today, the platform shared a bunch of year-end data, which reveals that Megan Thee Stallion was the top artist in the US by “catalogue creations,” meaning in terms of how many times users included her songs in their videos. This is Meg’s second year in a row securing that title. Following her in the top 10 are, in order, Doja Cat, PoppHunna, Olivia Rodrigo, Cardi B, YungManny, Soulja Boy, Drake, Kevin Gates, and Coi Leray.

When it comes to artists actually using TikTok themselves, though, Lil Nas X had the most-viewed music account in the US. After him on the list are Lizzo, iHeartMemphis, Jason Derulo, Oliver Tree, Leray, Selena Gomez, Charlie Puth, Billie Eilish, and Benny Blanco.

The post also includes a list of the year’s top emerging artists and it includes up-and-comer favorites like Baby Tate, Coi Leray, Magdalena Bay, PinkPantheress, and Shygirl. TikTok also compiled a list of the top “comeback tracks” in the US, meaning “trending songs released between 5 and 25 years ago.” Leading that list is Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills,” and also included are Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘n’ Nite,” Britney Spears’ “Gimme More,” and Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” featuring Timbaland.

TikTok shared a lot more year-end data than was covered here, so check out their post here.

Coi Leray Gets Into The Spirit With A Soulful Holiday Remix Of ‘Twinnem’

Coi Leray’s “Twinnem” has become a bonafide hit, surpassing her breakout “No More Parties” and proving that she’s no mere one-hit-wonder. In addition to its TikTok takeover, the song also spawned a remix featuring DaBaby and landed on Uproxx’s Best Songs Of 2021. But the story doesn’t stop there; Coi’s released another new remix of the track, this one in time for the upcoming holiday for Amazon Music. Adding a gospel choir to reflect the churchy organs already present in the song, Coi’s Amazon Music Exclusive displays a new dimension that might just extend its run into the new year.

Coi’s 2021 has come after an extended grind, during which she dropped a string of mixtapes and viral singles that established her rap credentials but didn’t take her to the next level. She was so discouraged that she contemplated quitting music until Lil Durk convinced her to stick it out with his belief in “No More Parties” — he appears on the remix. Since then, Coi’s future has been pretty bright, including a selection to XXL‘s 2021 Freshman Class, a bunch of successful singles and features including “Big Purr,” “Bout Me,” and Earthgang’s “Options” remix, and receiving a confident co-sign from NLE Choppa, who counted her among the female artists who “got next” alongside Flo Milli, Lakeyah, Rico Nasty, and Rubi Rose.

NLE Choppa Shouts Out The Female Artists He Thinks ‘Got Next,’ Including Coi Leray And Flo Milli

It’s no secret that hip-hop music is going through a nearly unprecedented boom in female artists dominating the charts. There are more female rappers charting on the Hot 100 than ever, and more women in hip-hop are receiving more attention. The 2021 XXL Freshman class included no fewer than three new women on it, including Coi Leray, Lakeyah, and Rubi Rose, and the days of label or fan-imposed, Highlander-style rap beef (“there can only be one!”) among them appear to be over.

While there are obviously some men in the game unhappy about this shift in the status quo, there are others who are ready and willing to champion the next generation. Among the latter is Memphis rising star NLE Choppa, who used his Twitter to highlight some of those who are currently taking over or poised to blow up in the near future. He even went out of his way to tag them all in the thread to ensure they got maximum exposure, listing the above-mentioned Coi, Lakeyah, and Rubi, as well as BIA, DreamDoll, Dreezy, Erica Banks, and Renni Rucci. Later on, he added a couple of names he forgot, Flo Milli and Rico Nasty, noting he’s got a song with the latter.

Of course, because it’s Twitter, fans were quick to chime in and insist that he forgot other rising stars like Armani Caesar, KenTheMan, and Latto, but there’s no pleasing everybody — and, to be fair, there are a lot more female rappers getting attention these days. If a few get missed in one or two Twitter threads, they’ll likely still receive big love from fans, which should be the goal at the end of the day, right?
