Chloë Said Steve Lacy ‘Inspired Me To Be Fearless’ As He’s Named Among ‘Time’s ‘100 Most Influential People’

Time magazine unveiled its annual “100 Most Influential People” list today, April 13. The cover stars are Doja Cat, Michael B. Jordan, Jennifer Coolidge, and Bob Iger. But within the artists’ section of nominees is also Steve Lacy.

Chloë wrote Lacy’s entry, as found on Time‘s website:

“What I admire most about Steve Lacy is that he’s always himself — a good person who loves to make music. In a world where everything’s so contrived, he just wants to nerd out and be free, and that makes him a force to be reckoned with.

From his performances onstage to his clothes to his lyrics, he’s open to expressing what’s real. That’s why people gravitate toward him so much, because in a time when everybody’s trying to be what other people want them to be, he’s saying, ‘I’m gonna make music — and if you like it, that’s cool.’ He has inspired me to be fearless, to trust that whoever my music is meant for will find it.

He has the biggest, warmest smile. And he reminds me that you don’t need to have all the bells and whistles to make good music. What you need is yourself, your ideas, and your heart.”

Chlöe has adopted Lacy’s unbothered attitude during the rollout of her debut solo studio album, In Pieces, culminating in her displaying nasty comments people have tweeted about her as part of her set design on the first night of her In Pieces Tour.

Lacy’s 2022 breakout was fueled by “Bad Habit,” his first-ever No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was also nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2023 Grammys, where Lacy won Best Progressive R&B Album with Gemini Rights.

What Is Chlöe’s Setlist Of Songs For The ‘In Pieces Tour?’

Chloë‘s new album In Pieces is finally out, not without controversy or coveted advice from Beyoncé. She kicked off her highly anticipated tour for the LP last night (April 11) in Chicago at the Riviera Theatre.

The 25-year-old singer didn’t hesitate to address all of the recent drama at the show. The screen behind her displayed distasteful comments about her such as “Why is her ass always out?” and “She doesn’t know who she is,” and she performed in front of it unbothered. Toward the end, she confronted the hate head-on: “F*ck what the f*ck anybody wanna f*ckin’ say. They can kiss my Black ass.”

Her setlist was packed with new songs for fans, opening with the first track on the record, “Someone’s Calling (Chloë).” It even included a Missy Elliott cover on top of “Told Ya,” the In Pieces song featuring Missy, according to setlist.fm.

Chlöe Shares Video From “In Pieces” Tour

Much has been said about Chlöe’s debut solo album, In Pieces. The album has reportedly sold poorly and debuted at #119 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The ensuing social media debate sparked Chlöe to make a public statement about her critics. However, it is nothing new for the star, who has faced criticism on everything from her collaborations to her personality.

However, despite the cool reception to the album, Chlöe has no choice but to move forwards. April 11 marked the first night of her In Pieces tour, which spans the rest of the month. The tour began in Chicago and will make 10 more stops across the US and Canada. April 23 will see Chlöe perform at The Eastern in her home city of Atlanta. Chlöe will end the tour with a performance at The Novo in Los Angeles on May 3.

Chloe Shares Electric Video From Opening Night

Following the first night of the tour at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, Chlöe shared a video from the concert on Instagram. “first night of my headlining tour.. sold tf out!! thank you Chicago for ALL of your love. detroit see you tomorrow it’s going downnnn” read the caption to the video that showcased some of Chlöe’s choreography and performance. The post has since received over 150,000 likes and nearly 2000 comments. Her claim that her Chicago show sold out is a positive sign and evidence that album sales aren’t everything. While her album has only sold a reported 10,000 copies, it was also streamed 2 million times on Spotify on release day.

The atmosphere portrayed in the video is absolutely electric, indicating that Chlöe is determined to put on a show to remember in her first solo tour. She is set to perform two more shows this week alone. April 13 sees her at The Filmore Detroit in Detroit before she travels to Rebel in Toronto on April 14. Despite the overwhelming criticism the singer has faced for myriad reasons, Chlöe is clearly focused on giving fans a show to remember on her first tour. If the criticism is weighing on her at all, other than her remarks last night, she is refusing to let it be her undoing.

Chlöe Clapped Back At Her Critics And Performed In Front Of Their Words To Open The ‘In Pieces Tour’

It appears that starring in Swarm has perhaps given Chlöe some new insight into dealing with fan negativity online. Or maybe, now that her debut solo album <em>In Pieces is finally out, she’s just done playing nice. Whatever the reason, the 25-year-old singer has been much more vocal about calling out her haters lately and carried that defiant energy into the first night of her In Pieces Tour.

Fans shared their photos of the concert, capturing a background featuring a sampling of the critical comments that Chlöe has received over the past several months, including such missives as “Why is her ass always out?” and “She doesn’t know who she is.” In addition to performing in defiance of these criticisms, she apparently also returned to the stage after performing for an encore of sorts in which she shared her explicative-laden thoughts on the subject at hand.

“F*ck what the f*ck anybody wanna f*ckin’ say,” she snarled. “They can kiss my Black ass.”

Never forget: Chloe X Halle are from Atlanta, Georgia. They do not play that.

Despite a seemingly lukewarm fan reception for In Pieces, the album still reached the Billboard 200 and as the videos show, she’s still got plenty of support in her corner, regardless of the social media perception. After removing social media from her phone, it seems Chlöe isn’t just “clearer” as she put it, but freer to say exactly what she thinks, online backlash be damned.

Cardi B Clearly Loved A Gospel Version Of One Of Her Hits From Chlöe’s New Movie ‘Praise This’

As Chlöe’s debut solo album In Pieces finds its way onto the Billboard charts, the rising star’s new movie Praise This is now streaming on Peacock. The movie, which follows a gospel praise team as they enter a national competition, features a number of gospel covers of pop and R&B hits, including a cleaned-up version of Cardi B’s 2018 hit “Money” by contemporary Christian singer Koryn Hawthorne.

Where Cardi’s original version celebrates getting “Money,” Hawthorne adds religious messaging but keeps the spirited flow that took the original all the way to No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Hawthorne celebrated the film’s release with a tweet capturing Cardi’s reaction to hearing the remix in the studio. In the video, Cardi can be seen beaming from ear to ear as she throws her hands and sings along to the revamped lyrics.

Praise This is getting a more uniformly positive reception from fans than In Pieces did; it’s likely that the gospel-centric film resonates more strongly with the tastes of many of Chlöe’s earliest supporters. (Chlöe made her film debut in her mentor Beyoncé’s similarly gospel-inspired film Fighting Temptations, and that first impression has clearly stuck with fans who aren’t feeling the young singer’s shift to a more mainstream sound.)

Chlöe addressed that criticism recently on her hometown radio, positing that her loudest critics actually weren’t around for her and her sister Halle’s humble beginnings. The truth is, many artists often face harsh criticisms as they grow creatively, and if anything, it’s a sign that people are truly invested. That’s a good sign for Chlöe’s burgeoning career, as it means no matter what direction she decides to pursue, she’s at least guaranteed a captive audience.

Praise This is out now on Peacock. In Pieces is also out now via Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. Find more information here.

Chlöe’s ‘In Pieces’ Debuts On The ‘Billboard’ 200, Marking A First For Her As A Solo Artist

Chlöe released In Pieces, her debut solo album on March 31 after building anticipation with singles such as “Pray It Away” or “How Does It Feel” featuring Chris Brown.

After the album’s arrival, fans were treated to the video for “Cheatback” featuring Future. They’re also still waiting on an official video for “Told Ya” featuring Missy Elliott.

All of that culminated in In Pieces debuting at No. 119 on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated April 15. As noted by Chart Data, it marks Chlöe’s first time charting on the Billboard 200 as a solo artist.

Chloe X Halle peaked at No. 16 and No. 139 for Ungodly Hour and The Kids Are Alright, respectively.

Chlöe referenced her musical beginnings with her sister, Halle Bailey, while addressing the criticism she has endured in the wake of In Pieces.

“The thing is, the same people who say that weren’t fans of Halle and [me] when we had our Ungodly Hour album out, The Kids Are Alright, so, it’s a bunch of people who are just putting in their two cents now just to really say things,” she said during an appearance on Atlanta’s Majic 107.5 radio station. “Because Sis and I, we’ve been underground for a minute, and the same people who talk, they weren’t around then or giving us our props then. It’s like, now they want to talk trash for some reason.”

Chlöe Said She Is ‘Mentally So Much Clearer’ After Removing Social Media From Her Phone

Chlöe is still hot off the release of her solo debut album, In Pieces. On the album, she balances confident bops with harrowing accounts of heartbreak and insecurity. Chlöe is no stranger to the spotlight, so sharing these emotions wasn’t difficult for her.

But she’s chosen to make everyday life easier for herself in little ways. In an interview on The Tamron Hall Show, she revealed that she has opted not to have access to her own social media accounts.

“For a minute, I removed all socials off my phone and I just turned it over to my team,” she said. “Of course I’d make the content, I’d come up with the captions and I would just send it to them, but I got rid of my social media because I realized the things people were saying.”

She continued, saying, “The negative things people were saying about me were affecting me, and I noticed if I’d go out on stage or ‘if I do this people are gonna say this,’ and I realized that I was changing myself for other people and their opinions and what they were accusing me of originally, which was not being myself and being forced, that’s what I was tuning into because I was so occupied with what people thought about me, but the second I deleted the apps off my phone, I was mentally so much clearer because you’re doing what makes you happy.”

As a result, she admitted that she had not seen much of the backlash in relation to her controversial sex scene on Swarm.

Chlöe Dismissed Criticism Over Collaborating With Chris Brown On Her New Album ‘In Pieces’

Chlöe’s new album In Pieces mostly generated excitement among fans, but there was some backlash as well, over the Chris Brown-featuring song “How Does It Feel.” Now, Chlöe has spoken up about the collaboration.

She was asked about it in a recent interview with V-103 Atlanta’s The Big Tigger Morning Show (as Stereogum notes). She said:

“I always just wanna let the music speak for itself, and to be honest, no matter what I do, people always find things to say about it, so I’m used to it. I just choose to ignore it. People have every right to their opinions, freedom of speech, and it’s up to me to choose what I give my attention and energy to.”

In another recent interview, she also addressed negativity, saying, “The thing is, the same people who say that weren’t fans of Halle and [me] when we had our Ungodly Hour album out, The Kids Are Alright. So, it’s a bunch of people who are just putting in their two cents now just to really say things. Sis and I, we’ve been underground for a minute and the same people who talk weren’t around then or giving us our props then, and it’s like now they want to talk trash for some reason.”

Chlöe Said The People Who ‘Talk Trash’ About Her Solo Career Weren’t Fans Of Chloe X Halle In The First Place

Chloe Bailey has taken more than her fair share of trash talk from fans lately. People on Twitter have negatively compared her to her sister Halle, derided her creative choices, and criticized her choice of collaborators. In a new interview, she addressed those people, pointing out the fatal flaw in one of their favorite arguments.

Appearing on her hometown radio station, Atlanta’s Majic 107.5, Chlöe broke down the negative responses after being asked about the criticism by host Ryan Cameron. “I saw somebody that said, ‘Whatever happened to Chloe X Halle?’” the host said. “Because they felt like it was a space — after Beyoncé [signed the sister duo] and all that — there was just gonna be all these things. Then, all of a sudden, all these things really happen, then it’s like, ‘Whatever happened to Chloe X Halle?’ It’s like they almost felt like… they wanted you to stay a kid!”

“The thing is,” Chlöe replied, “The same people who say that weren’t fans of Halle and [me] when we had our Ungodly Hour album out, The Kids Are Alright. So, it’s a bunch of people who are just putting in their two cents now just to really say things. Sis and I, we’ve been underground for a minute and the same people who talk weren’t around then or giving us our props then, and it’s like now they want to talk trash for some reason.”

For sure, it’s appeared that the more success the sisters have seen, the more critical the peanut gallery has become — but those people sharing their opinions now don’t even seem to know much about the girls. Take the loud contingent of racist haters who lashed out at Halle’s casting in The Little Mermaid. It seems they’ve just become the latest targets of convenience for online cranks looking for something to hate.
