Boldy James Has Another AOTY Contender With Conductor Williams-Assisted “Across The Tracks”

The underground scene has a lot of standout voices, but Boldy James might be the guy at this moment in time. Atlanta born and Detroit raised, the Griselda affiliate seemingly winds up on every album of the year list. His consistency is probably his greatest attribute, as he rarely misses on a LP or EP. For example, Boldy and his co-star, Nicholas Craven, already have a critically praised tape out with Penalty of Leadership. Now, you might want to add Across The Tracks, the first collaboration between Boldy James and Conductor Williams, to those rankings.

The former loves to work alongside hip-hop’s best beat makers quite often. So, it was only a matter of time before him, and Conductor linked up. The latter is also on quite of run of his own. From his work with Drake to JID, the legendary boom-bap specialist is now going to get even more shine thanks to his efforts on Across The Tracks. His instrumentals range from downright blissful to dark and grungy. Some our favorite beats include “The Ol Switcharoo”, “Flying Trapeze Act”, “Lamp Shade”, and “Terms And Conditions”. Speaking of the latter, it was one of two promotional tracks, with “Offwhite Lumberjack” being the more recent one. As for Boldy’s performances, they are top notch again, mixing great rhymes, some humor, along with relentless flows. Both artists are in their bags from track 1-10.

Boldy James Is Nearing Project #3 With Conductor Williams-Produced Single “Offwhite Lumberjack”

Boldy James and Conductor Williams are cooking up something grandiose without the pretentiousness. Their collaborative record, Across the Tracks, is due in just one week. June 28 should be a special day for these two prolific and consistent artists, as the lead single, “Terms And Conditions”, is getting is receiving tons of adoration from listeners. These two are no strangers to each other, so you already know their chemistry will be off the charts once we get the full tape. For the gritty Detroit, Michigan rapper, this will be project number three. It will follow up his album of the year contender, Penalty of Leadership, as well as Trapper’s Alley: Pros & Cons. With just several days remaining, Boldy James and The Conductor are looking to give fans presumably one more taste of the record with “Offwhite Lumberjack”.

They way we have described the sound of Across the Tracks so far is tough yet elegant. There is a good chance that these two are going to carry that throughout the eight other songs as well. We say that because “Offwhite Lumberjack” provides those same qualities. The purposefully dirty guitar sample woven into the instrumental feels special but adds that blue-collar feel that you expect from Boldy. Additionally, the spaced-out drums add a nice hazy feel. Per usual, the bars are great too, as there are plenty of enjoyable one liners to be had. It might be crazy to say this early, but there is a chance that Boldy James has two potentials for the best rap album of 2024. We foresee Across the Tracks winding up on a lot of end-of-the-year lists and you will almost assuredly see it on ours.

Big Hit, Hit-Boy And The Alchemist Deliver On Gritty “Black & Whites”

Big Hit, Hit-Boy and The Alchemist represent three different phases of hip-hop. Big Hit brings the gritty appeal of an industry veteran despite being relatively new to the game. His son, Hit-Boy, has been one of the most versatile producers of the last decade. The Alchemist, meanwhile, has been lacing beats for the best rappers in the game for over thirty years. There was a risk that bunching them together would result in their strengths canceling out, resulting in a subpar album. Thankfully, that’s not what happened here.

Black & Whites, the debut album from this trio, is a triumph. In a very particular field, that is. The album is not going for summer playlists or radio play, it’s going for the grime and the soulfulness of the best street albums the genre has to offer. “Heartless” sees Big Hit weave cold-blooded bars over an Alchemist beat with a gorgeous vocal sample. There’s no drums, just Hit’s propulsive flow and Alc’s wizardy working in tandem. The soul chops on “Sly, Slick & Wicked” and the titular track are worth the price of admission. Hit-Boy and Alchemist have incredible chemistry behind the boards, and nearly steal the show from their emcee. Fortunately, Big Hit brings his A-game whenever he’s paired with guest features.

Big Hit And His Producers Attempt Different Styles

The rapper and Boldy James sound mean as hell on the the East Coast-centric “Godfather, Pt. 2.” Then the former turns around and trades verse space with HitgirlLENA on the effortlessly catchy, West Coast-bounce of “Gank Move.” “Gank Move” closes out Black & Whites on a deceptively warm note, but most of what’s here is chilly, efficient, and excellently made. If you liked the promo single “Drug Tzar,” you’re going to love the rest of what’s here.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album Black & Whites by Big Hit, Hit-Boy and The Alchemist? Do you think the two producers work well together? What is the best song? Mike Shabb Delivers A Moody Triumph With SEWASIDE III Album

Mike Shabb has been grinding. The Montreal rapper has dropped eight projects in the last four years, including the first two installments in the SEWASIDE series. These releases tucked flashes of brilliance into hazy and often unfinished song ideas. Shabb’s talent was undeniable, but it still felt a step or two away from completely smoothing out. Fortunately, Mike Shabb has made up ground on SEWASIDE III. The latest installment is a step up in every conceivable way.

The first song on the album, “Intro” sets an appropriately moody tone. There’s a quiet confidence in the rapper’s delivery reminiscent of mixtape-era Joey Bada$$. It helps, of course, that the instrumental is a jazzy, propulsive earworm. The instrumentals on SEWASIDE III are spectacular throughout, with more of an emphasis on off-kilter tempos and irregular vocal chops. They are the kind of musical beds that most rappers would have a hard time riding, and yet, they bring out the best in Mike Shabb. The most obvious example of his verbal dexterity is on the album cut “Free Jazz,” where he skates over a beat that sounds like its being improvised on the spot.

Mike Shabb Leans Into Jazzy Instrumentals

That’s not to say that Mike Shabb sidesteps boom-bap entirely. “We Live In Montreal” and “Free Cars” are grimy street tales punctuated by energetic backing vocals. The latter benefits from a scene-stealing guest verse by ANKHLEJOHN. All the features on SEWASIDE III are excellent, which is gives it a leg up over its predecessors. Da$h skates over the stuttering “Free YSL”, while Boldy James sounds right at home on the slow-burn “Big Piranhas.” Shabb’s ability to secure artists of this caliber is a testament to both his buzz and his lyrical talent. People like Da$h and Boldy wouldn’t bother if the kid didn’t have a ton of talent.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album SEWASIDE III by Mike Shabb? Does the Montreal rapper deliver with his latest installment? What is your favorite song and why? Which guest verse stole the show? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Benny The Butcher Announces “Everybody Can’t Go Tour” With Boldy James: Details

January was an action-packed month for hip-hop music. The lackluster year that was 2023, was seemingly wiped from everyone’s memory after all of the quality from last month. One of the reasons why was because of Benny The Butcher’s latest record, Everybody Can’t Go. He was talking it up throughout the entirety of last year and he mostly delivered. Tracks like “BRON,” “Big Dog,” and “Back Again,” with Snoop Dogg were some of its major highlights. Now that his fans have had some time to digest the album for about a month, Benny is ready to elevate the excitement by going on tour.

According to HipHopDX, Benny is taking flight for his Everybody Can’t Go Tour in about two months. He revealed this on his social media platforms earlier today. While a solo Benny tour is exciting on its own, the Buffalo, New Yorker is bringing a guest along with him across some of the major cities in the U.S. Fans will be able to see Griselda teammate Boldy James as well. It makes perfect sense, seeing as how he and producer Nicholas Craven also dropped their album in the same month.

Boldy James Raps Like A Gangster On Nicholas Craven-Produced Album “Penalty Of Leadership”

Boldy James is always willing to drop a new album at the drop of a hat. One of the best lyricists from the South, he is bringing it once again on his 18th overall project. The 41-year-old rapper likes to work with a partner in crime. This time, the person that is joining him on his gritty journey is Nicholas Craven.

The Canadian producer is no stranger to Boldy, though. These two ultra-talented and detail-oriented undergrounders first worked on a tape back in late September 2022. Together, they put the concise Fair Exchange No Robbery. So, it is nice to see them rekindle their work relationship on Penalty of Leadership.
