Drake Joins The Beatles To Make Billboard Chart History

Drake has become the only act in music history besides The Beatles to chart on the Billboard 200 for at least 3,000 cumulative weeks. The report comes from Chart Data, which shared the news on social media, on Thursday. The Beatles are far from the only legendary artists Drake has been competing with for his place in Billboard history. Last year, he tied Michael Jackson in his journey to have the most No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart ever.

The historic feat comes as Drake has been feuding with Kendrick Lamar. He’s dropped both “Family Matters” and “The Heart Part 6” to diss the rapper since last week. In response, Lamar has released “Meet The Grahams” and “Not Like Us.” Upon release of the latter, Lamar broke the record for most streams ever in a single day on the US Spotify and Global Spotify charts for a rap song.

In other Drake news, a security guard was shot outside of his home in Toronto, earlier this week. In the days since, several more people have been caught trespassing near his property. Prior to the incidents, Lamar featured an ariel view of the home as the cover art for “Not Like Us.” It featured sexual sex offender icons edited over the property.

In the time since, neither Lamar nor Drake has released any new diss tracks. Be on the lookout for further updates on Drake as well as his ongoing feud on HotNewHipHop.

Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival Trial Delayed Right Before Scheduled Start Date

It’s already been a long time coming for the victims of the Astroworld festival tragedy and their victims seeking out justice. The dozens and dozens of lawsuits filed over the notoriously deadly music festival were collected into one major legal undertaking. But as you’d expect with so many defendants and so many cases the resulting trial has moved quite slowly. Back in March they were still settling who the actual defendants in the case would be. Drake, who made a surprise appearance at the festival, was released from the lawsuit. Travis Scott made a similar request but it was denied.

According to Billboard, the newest delay in the trial is yet another one of the defendants trying to get out of the case, Apple. The company livestreamed the festival on their Apple Music platform and were included in lawsuits alongside Scott and many others who worked on the festival. Apple is also attempting to be freed from the lawsuit making a free speech argument. They’re appealing a motion that was already struck down arguing that streaming the concert grants them the right to free speech as electronic media. While the appeal is being weighed the trial has to be delayed. It was about the reach the jury selection phase, but that’s now been pushed back.

Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival Trial Delayed Again

Prior to this delay the latest development in the Astroworld Festival trial dealt with the public’s ability to watch it. The victims filed a motion attempting to get the trial broadcast online. Their statement indicated they were seeking transparency and accountability with the move. They already scored a pretty significant win when the judge ruled that the trial will have a jury that Scott and the other defendants will have to face.

What do you think of Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival trial being delayed after Apple made a last second move to try and be released from the trial? If the court proceedings end up being livestreamed do you think you’ll tune in? Let us know in the comment section below.

Travis Scott Astroworld Trial: Victims Request That The Trial Be Livestreamed

The Astroworld Festival tragedy happened over two-and-a-half years ago and soon the civil trial will get under way. Hundreds of lawsuits filed against the organizers of the event were collected into one massive filing. The trial starts early next month and lawyers for the victims of the festival will attempt to argue that those who put the festival together failed to plan for and take into account the inherent risk of the crowd. They’ll aim to prove legal negligence on the part of the festival organizers and Scott himself. The rapper filed a motion attempting to get himself removed from the trial like Drake was just last month. But this time the judge ruled that Scott must remain on board, unsurprisingly given how important he is to the festival.

Now with the trial rapidly approaching, the victims are making a new request. They’re asking for the trial to be livestreamed so that the public will be able to watch along. Their statement explains that the move is an attempt to generate “transparency and accountability” both within the courtroom and for the parties they’re arguing are responsible. Whether or not the billion-dollar civil trial will be available to watch on line is up to the judges discretion.

Astroworld Victims Want The Travis Scott Trial To Be Livestreamed

Travis Scott was recently announced as a headliner for this year’s Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash. The Chicago festival also sports Playboi Carti. It’s announcement flexes that they’re the only festival this year where you can see both artists. The festival also features Chief Keef, who will make a return to his hometown for the first time in more than a decade. Fans were completely blown away by the lineup announcement, which appears to be in line for the biggest Summer Smash yet.

What do you think of the victims in Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival lawsuit requesting the trial be broadcast live? Would you tune into any of the court proceedings if it was available to watch online? Let us know in the comment section below.

Tay Keith Reveals He Faced Massive Backlash For Working With Sexyy Red

Sexyy Red had a massive burst in popularity in 2023 that saw her rising from a relative unknown to one of the biggest stars in all of hip-hop. One of her biggest collaborators is producer Tay Keith, who helped craft her breakthrough hit. They worked together on “Pound Town” which eventually broke through when Nicki Minaj joined on for the “Pound Town 2” remix. They also teamed up on the viral “Skee Yee” which became an irresistible summer hit and viral TikTok anthem last summer. But in a new interview with Billboard, the producer revealed his choice to collaborate with Red didn’t go over well with everyone.

“People were trolling the sh*t out of me. They were real-deal trolling me. It wasn’t much good feedback. It was coming from even people around me, ‘What you doing?’ I saw the potential. That’s as simple as it was, me believing in her,” Tay Keith explains in the interview. “I think people doubted me working with her because they didn’t see the reason to do it. I definitely seen the potential. I tell people all the time how long I was watching Sexyy Red’s music before she blew up,” he continues. The producer also reveals that he was watching her videos on YouTube for a while before the pair finally collaborated. Check out his full interview below.

DMX Receives Posthumous Honor Courtesy Of Five Finger Death Punch

DMX was a crossover star in the purest sense of the phrase. He didn’t compromise his sound or his unique approach to songwriting, but his charisma was so overwhelming that it allowed him to bridge the gap between hip-hop and heavy metal. It’s easy to forget, but DMX was one of the artists who was at Woodstock ’99, and the only rapper. DMX’s influence on heavy metal is significant, in fact, that he’s still impacting Billboard charts three years after his death.

Five Finger Death Punch recently put out a deluxe version of their 2022 album Afterlife. The album’s lead single was “This Is the Way,” a DMX collaboration that mashed up the band’s song “Judgement Day” and X’s “The Way It’s Gonna Be.” The collab really struck a chord with listeners, topping the Billboard Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart. Billboard reports that “This Is the Way” pulled in a staggering 1,546 sales, and gave Five Finger Death Punch its 17th number one. The song’s impressive performance on the Hard Rock charts, however, was a first for DMX.

DMX Landed His First Hard Rock Number One

The rapper born Earl Simmons may have been a favorite among heavy metal crowds, but he never had a charting single on the Hard Rock charts during his lifetime. The achievement is bittersweet, of course, as X is not here to enjoy it. Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Zoltan Bathory, told Loudwire that he’d wanted to reach out to DMX years ago. Unfortunately, the schedules of the two artists never seemed to line up. After X died in 2021, Bathory felt compelled to make the collaboration happen as a tribute to the rapper. The band was able to get their hands on isolated DMX vocals, and the rest, as they say, is history.

“We got an opportunity with some of [DMX’s] master recordings,” Bathory told the outlet. “We got a green light on that — we can use these verses, these lyrics. So we had the masters and we basically reverse-engineered it. There was music under it, we took off the music and wrote new music and then sort of melded it with our style.” The melding of styles obviously worked. DMX appears to be in higher demand than ever, as evidenced by this chart topper and recent comments made by Hitmaka. The producer revealed he’s sitting on multiple X collabs, and is waiting for the right time to drop them.

SZA Set To Receive A Special Award From The Songwriters Hall Of Fame

SZA had about as impressive of a 2023 as anybody. Following the release of SOS in late 2022, she took a year-long victory lap marked by some of the biggest hits of her career so far. It began with “Kill Bill” which hovered in the top 5 of the Hot 100 for months following the album’s release and eventually hit #1 when Doja Cat teamed up for a remix. As soon as the momentum from that song slowed down, “Snooze” took over and became her biggest chart hit ever. The track is still on the charts and next week will be its stunning 70th week on the Hot 100.

Now SZA is receiving yet another honor in the wake of her massive year. It was announced today that she’ll be this year’s recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award. She’ll be given the award at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards on June 13 in New York City. According to Billboard, the announcement describes the award as an honor presented to “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs.” The “Snooze” singer is just the second black woman to win the award following Alicia Keys being honored nearly two decades ago. Check out the announcement of her award below.

SZA Getting Special Songwriters Award

Late last year, SZA announced that she had a deluxe edition of SOS coming soon. The special new deluxe album was called LANA and fans were expecting it sooner rather than later. When she dropped the single “Saturn” back in February fans assumed that the full album would be dropping soon, but that hasn’t been the case. A big reason was revealed to fans last month.

The R&B darling went on a public rant against the person who leaked LANA and revealed that she’s writing and recording an entire new deluxe album instead of officially releasing the leaked songs. What do you think of SZA being honored at this year’s Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards? Are you looking forward to SZA eventually releasing her SOS deluxe version LANA? Let us know in the comment section below.

J Cole’s “Might Delete Later” Misses No. 1 Debut, Beyonce’s “COWBOY CARTER” Takes Top Spot

With his last six album releases, J Cole has confidently held onto the Billboard 200 album chart’s No. 1 spot. When it came time to drop his Might Delete Later project earlier this month, however, he had some serious competition from Beyonce, whose dive into country is continuing to do numbers even after its first week out. Upon arriving on DSPs, COWBOY CARTER became the best-selling record of 2024 so far, moving upwards of 400K units.

Though it was initially expected to come in at No. 2, it looks like Queen B has nabbed the top spot on the chart again this week, bumping Cole’s work down to second. As HipHopDX notes, the surprise mixtape brought in 115K album equivalent units over the past few days, which is still impressive, even if it ends his over 10-year streak. 2011’s Cole World: The Sideline Story was the first of the MC’s LP’s to go No. 1, and 2021’s The Off-Season marks the last time he achieved the accolade. Besides his solo efforts, the Dreamville compilation tape, Revenge of the Dreamers III became a chart-topper in 2019, making it the label head’s seventh overall.

J Cole Was Heading for Billboard’s No. 1, but Bey Ultimately Beat Him

The loss is likely tough for the father of two, but he and Bey have previously collaborated so we’re hoping there’s no bad blood. In 2011, Cole joined the Houston native to remix “Party,” which he revealed he was initially supposed to be on the original version of. “Just the fact to even be on the song with her and shoot the video with her and just be in her presence. She’s such a hard-working, incredible artist,” he said on the Rise & Grind Morning Show last year.

The men of hip-hop have been feuding non-stop in recent weeks, and though he’s usually a peaceful person, even J Cole found himself in the middle of Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s drama. However, after coming for K-Dot on “7 Minute Drill,” the North Carolina native ultimately left the diss track off his Might Delete Later project, though it still landed on the Billboard Hot 100. Read all about that at the link below, and check back later for more music/pop culture news updates.

Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar Threepeat on Top of Billboard Hot 100 with “Like That”

Future and Metro Boomin Announces Two New Albums in 'We Don't Trust You' Trailer

Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar have claimed the three-peat on top of the Billboard Hot 100 with “Like That.” The single that kicked off the rap Civil War continues to reign supreme.

According to Billboard, another beef record hit the top 10 as J. Cole’s shots to Kendrick Lamar, “7 Minute Drill,” came in at No. 6. It will likely have a sharp plummet after Cole apologized and pulled the single from streaming.

“Like That” saw 40 million streams (down 13%) and 14 million radio impressions (up 39%) and sold 3,000 copies (down 56%) in the week of April 5-11. It’s the first song to hit 40 million streams in its first three weeks since Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” in Jan-Feb 2023. Among hip-hop hits, it’s the first since Cardi B’s “WAP” in Aug-Sep 2020 to achieve this. J. Cole’s “7 Minute Drill” debuted at No. 6 on the Hot 100, powered by 23.4 million streams, marking his 13th top 10 entry and first since October 2023.

You can see the full top 10 list below.

Beyonce Makes Country Music History With Chart-Topping New Album

Last month, Beyonce unleashed her highly-anticipated new album COWBOY CARTER into the world. The record came on the back of two acclaimed singles “TEXAS HOLD EM” and “16 CARRIAGES” which predicted a shift into the sound and style of country music. The album that resulted dabbled in country music and so much more throughout its tracklist and was met with oceans of critical acclaim as a result. Now the album’s chart achievements are rolling in and they’re equally impressive.

Over the weekend COWBOY CARTER debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. But the album didn’t just grab the top spot on the charts, it took a commanding lead selling nearly 300k more units than any other album. With a grand total of 407k Bey broke the one-week-old record for biggest sales week of 2024 previously held by Future & Metro Boomin. Earlier today the top 10 of the Hot 100 was revealed featuring three songs from the record. “TEXAS HOLD EM” returned to the top 10 hitting number two. Her Miley Cyrus collaboration “II MOST WANTED” came in at number 6 while her cover of Dolly Parton’s “JOLENE” is right behind at number 7. But she may have made an even more impressive achievement on the country album charts.

Beyonce Breaks Down Country Music Barriers

It was also just announced that COWBOY CARTER debuted at the top of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. That means Beyonce is officially the first black woman to ever top the chart in its entire 60-year history. The accomplishment firmly cements the album in country music history. In the weeks following the release of the album’s lead single, many country music stations refused to play it. One in particular, was bombarded by the Bey Hive online until they finally caved and decided to put the song in rotation.

What do you think of Beyonce becoming the first black woman ever to top the Billboard Top Country Albums chart? Are you surprised there’s never been another black woman to hit number one on the chart? Let us know in the comment section below.
