Omar Apollo Is Still Hooked On A Past Relationship On “Spite”

Omar Apollo is one of the more unsung talents in the alternative space. He has plenty of high-prolife features for artists such as Kali Uchis, Daniel Caesar, Joji, and more. Apollo also dabbles in Latin music, which can be credited to his Mexican parents. All in all, he is an extremely versatile talent that deserves more recognition for his work. Omar Apollo is back to prove his skillset again with “Spite.”

This is his first offering of 2024 as a whole so far. He did come through in October with a four-track EP called Live For Me. It featured the lead single “Ice Slippin,” and most of the songs were moodier in tone and production. With “Spite” though, Omar brings some more lively and upbeat production courtesy of a guitar and light drums. On this record, he is singing about a relationship that has him strangled.

He has split up with this girl, but he is always thinking about her and the times they spent together. “Why you gotta ruin every night? / Fifty K, I spend it out of spite / Every time I see you on my phone / Hate that I still need you in my life.” Hopefully, we get a new full-length project from him soon. Montell Fish’s Alter Ego DJ Gummy Bear Delivers Meditative Cuts On “Intercession Before Charlotte”

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania genre-bending artist Montell Fish received our first coverage last week for his single with dj gummy bear “Irrational.” However, the latter is not another artist. In fact, it is an alter ego, if you will. The single was to promote Montell Fish’s/gummy’s EP Intercession Before Charlotte. Well, today the “duo” is here to deliver that project and it features six tracks with zero features. Essentially, think of gummy bear as a producer and Montell is the performer.

After listening to the tape, this may be the most relaxing thing we have heard this year. The production takes center stage with elements of lo-fi and alternative. Montell’s lyrics are little bit of an afterthought, but not in a bad way. It just seems that this was clearly more of a dj gummy bear project compared to a Fish album.

Additionally, this will not be the last we hear from Montell. At some point, he will be dropping the follow-up Charlotte, which is going to be an LP. The meaning for this EP, according to a Hypebeast interview, was for dj gummy bear to keep Montell away from the distractions of fame. That will be talked about on Charlotte. He explains it further in the chat with the publication, but the other meaning behind Intercession is a distraction from the LP itself, meaning he needs more time to get it done.

Prolific Georgia rapper and singer Russ is already back with a new single for his fans. You may not find another artist who is willing to drop this much material so frequently anywhere else. Still just 31, the multi-hyphenate could go down with one of the largest catalogs of all time at this rate. Russ’ newest venture sees him take more of a singer-songwriter approach with “Drives.”

This track follows up on his December 22 single “Said It Freestyle” which saw him go the more traditional rapping route. All in all, it was a solid effort, but nothing too different creatively. Russ is known to crossover at times and break away from the mold he has put himself in. That is what he does here.

This cut is about a relationship that is severely on the mend with both of them dealing with their own problems. Russ brings some high-pitch vocals to the chorus. However, they just do not hit the right way. On the other hand, the lyrics are pretty decent and the production, also handled by Russ is pretty plain jane. For the past month or so, Kevin Abstract has been on a torrent run dropping singles left and right. When this happens, you know a new album is in the works. Those assumptions were correct in this case as well, with the BROCKHAMPTON leader making a full return to his solo career. The news broke the day he released the lead single, “Blanket.”

In fact, that also was the title track. Blanket is Kevin’s first album since 2019’s ARIZONA BABY. He was still a part of the alternative hip-hop group during that time. However, when they announced their disbandment in 2022, that sort of opened the floodgates for the leader to focus on his own material. Hence we have this LP before us today.

If you heard the title track, you know that Kevin decided to make a total 180 genre-wise. This 13-track tape is an exploration across the indie rock space.
