Kevin Gates Explains Toxic Masculinity: “You’re Overcompensating For A Lack Of Something”

Kevin Gates is an endless fountain of wisdom. Because he’s been doing press for his new album Khaza, we’ve been exposed to a lot of new takes from the Baton Rouge rapper.

In a recent interview with HipHopDX, Kevin Gates discussed toxic masculinity, explaining what he believed it’s rooted in and how men can avoid it. He also described how the trait impacted him personally through his relationship with his grandfather.

“You’re overcompensating for a lack of something, that’s when masculinity becomes toxic,” said Gates. He described the ideal masculinity as a masculinity which finds an equilibrium. “The holy divine feminine energy and the sacred masculinity together is balanced. That’s God,” he said. “Mother Earth, Father Sky, it has to be balanced.”

Gates talked about this balance in his grandfather. “My grandfather was very nurturing and he was a monster. He was a real monster, but he was very nurturing,” he recalled. “He taught me how to cook, he taught me how to fish, he taught me how to make my bed. He was nurturing. He didn’t fuss at me, ‘Get up you’re a man!’ Nah man you’re alright, s**t just do it again. That was his approach. ‘You’re alright, do it again.’ He was gentle with us, but when he was teaching us how to fight he taught us, you know, aggression. Controlled aggression.” According to Gates, most people nowadays have it wrong. “A lot of times I just be seeing this alpha male movement and this feminist movement. No, that’s not God,” he said.

On his recent “Super General” freestyle, Gates alluded to some of his own issues with the holy divine feminine energy, claiming that Dreka Gates had cheated on him. Check out our list of Kevin Gates’ freakiest songs, released in honor of his new record.

Rick Ross Would Rather Fly Commercial Than On A Private Jet: “That’s $50K I Could’ve Spent On My Garden”

Rick Ross makes it no secret that he’s richer than he’s ever been, but the 46-year-old didn’t get to where he is by lavishly spending his cash on all of life’s finest luxuries – rather, he got there by pinching his pennies where he could, including on expensive private jets, opting instead to fly commercial.

Earlier this week, the “Purple Lamborghini” artist hopped on Instagram to express his discontent at having to charter his own plane instead of taking a normal flight home from his performance at a festival.

“I’m disappointed,” Ross told his 15.3M followers. “I’m backstage at the Juneteenth celebration and just found out all the commercial flights being cancelled because of people quitting, and now I’m being forced to charter a private jet.”

According to Rozay, he would rather spend his precious dollar bills on his beautiful Atlanta estate, The Promise Land. “Man, that’s $50,000 I could’ve spent on my garden or buying some buffaloes. Come on, Delta,” he ranted.

If you’re not familiar, the Mississippi-born recording artist has spent the last few years curating an impressive collection of goods at his home, from a fire truck and a military tank (which he proudly showed off during his first-ever car show just a few weeks ago) to hinting at bringing some big cats to the property and opening a zoo to the general public.

In other news, Ross was recently spotted out and about with Lamar Odom’s ex-fiancée Sabrina Parr in Miami, sparking romance rumours – read more about that here, and let us know if you’re surprised by the rapper’s preference for flying commercially in the comments below.

Drake Dominates Apple Music, Broke Record for First-Day Dance Album Streams

honestly nevermind

Drake‘s Honestly, Nevermind became Apple Music’s most-streamed dance album, smashing the previous record for first-day streams worldwide.

Honestly, Nevermind adds to Drake’s Apple Music resume. Certified Lover Boy, Drake’s previous album, presently holds the record for the most first-day streams in Apple Music history. On Apple Music, Scorpion is the second most popular album in terms of first-day streams worldwide. With “Girls Want Girls,” Drake also holds the record for the most first-day streams worldwide on Apple Music.

Drake also released a statement letting fans in on his current life:

I let my humbleness turn to numbness at times letting time go by knowing I got the endurance to catch it another time

I work with every breath in my body cause it’s the work not air that makes me feel alive

That’s some real detrimental shit but that’s that shit my perfectionist mind doesn’t really mind because no one knows whats on my mind when I go to sleep at 9 & wake up at 5 – unless I say it in rhyme

I can’t remember the last time someone put they phone down, looked me in the eyes and asked my current insight on the times

But I remember every single time someone shined a light in my eyes

I purposely try to forget what went on between some ppl and I because I know I’m not a forgiving guy even when I try

My urge for revenge wins the game against my good guy inside every single fckn time

I got plans I can’t talk about with more than like 4 guys because the last time I shared em with someone on the outside…well that’s another story for another night

I was tryna get thru that statement to get to saying I’m not @ a time in my life where pats on the shoulder help get me by

I’ll take loyalty over an oh my & emoji fire

I know if it was a dark night where all the odds were against my side & my skill went to whoever took my life they’d done me off with a big smile & maybe evn post it for some likes

I know everyone that tells me they love me doesn’t love me all the time especially when im doing better than alright & they have to watch it from whatever point they at in their life

I got here being realistic

I didn’t get here being blind

I know whats what and especially what and who is by my side

Honestly…Nevermind.

ICYMI: Gunna Releases Open Letter to Fans and the Public: “I Am Being False Accused and Will Never Stop Fighting”

Gunna Gives Out His Number On Twitter: (470) 206-3380

Gunna has released his first statement since being jailed on a 56-count indictment in Georgia along with Young Thug and the rest of YSL Records.

Currently being held in Fulton County Jail, Gunna spoke about the opportunity that he provided for other professionals and his loved ones.

The statement, in part, reads:

“The picture that is being painted of me is ugly and untrue. My fans know I love to celebrate life, I love my family, I love travel, I love music, I love my fans. I have all faith that God will grant me justice for the purity in my heart and the innocence of my actions.”

Gunna also spoke to the constraints on his art as a freedom of expression:

“My art is now allowed to stand alone as entertainment, I’m not allowed that freedom as a Black Man in America. It is a sad reality that slavery is still alive in America today and still affecting my people. In 12 states more than half of the prison population is Black, one of those states is Georgia.”

Last week, Kevin Liles, the co-founder of 300 Entertainment, teamed up with Julie Greenwald, COO of Atlantic Records, for a petition to cease the use of rap lyrics in court. Liles also testified on behalf of Young Thug and YSL.

ICYMI: DJ Akademiks Offers Explanation After Video Surfaces of Him Discussing Underage Girls

djakademiks

DJ Akademiks trended online Wednesday after audio went viral of him saying that he would have sex with a 17-year-old. The Neighborhood Talk stated the audio is allegedly from 2013 when he was 20 years old.

“And to keep it real if you think about it in the bigger scheme of things, there’s not much difference between a 20 or a 17 or a 21 and a 17,” Akademiks said in the clip. “Just kinda means one’s a minor and one’s not a minor. But listen, I will say I adopted this rule which I think is fine. I said, listen, as long as a chick got a college ID she’s getting f*cked. I don’t care if she 17, I don’t care if she 17 and a half, I don’t care if she just turned 17, she gon’ get this d*ck.”

Ak would offer an explanation through a stream later but stood by his belief.

“What I was trying to say is that, either you’re 21 or 20, right? And someone’s like, 17, this Is only the college dynamic, right? Because they put four years of kids together, just like they do in high school. I said, usually there’s not much of a difference, like, when you’re in college, you don’t really see the difference and I still believe that.”
